Chapter 22
As much as she didn’t want to, deep in her heart Ann felt as though she should give Adam chance. Give him a chance to explain himself. After all he did, she still loved him. He was he high school sweetheart and she thought they would be together forever. As she sat on the couch in her pj’s watching TV, Ann thought to herself. ‘Should I tell Lynn? If I do, she’ll just yell at me.’
Just as she looked deep in thought, Lynn snuck up on her. “Hey there, whatcha doing?”
Ann jumped. “What the hell?” Ann turned and saw that it was Lynn. “Could you not do that? You scared the shit out of me!”
“So, what are you doing?”
“Thinking.”
“’Bout what?”
“Nothing.”
“You’re lieing. I know when you lie.”
“It isn’t important.”
“Lier.”
“It isn’t. Jesus! Let it go.”
“If it isn’t important, then why are you getting so defensive?”
“If I tell you, you have to promise not to get mad.”
“I can't do that.”
“Try.”
“Okay.”
“Adam showed up at my gig last night. I’m going to dinner with him tonight.”
“No you’re not.”
“When did you become my mother?”
“When you stopped being able to think on your own and make responsible choices.”
“How is this irresponsible?”
“You know something will go wrong and you will get hurt. You are finally happy with your life and I don’t want anything to foul that up.”
“I promise everything will be fine. I am not going to get hurt.”
“If you say so.”
There was a part of Ann that agreed with Lynn in thinking that something was going to go wrong. Another part told she could use this dinner as a means of revenge. ‘Oh well,’ she thought, ‘I guess I will just have to see what happens.’

When Ann got out of the cab to meat Adam, she half expected him to not be there. Much you her surprise, he had been there since 7:45, just like he said. “Well this is a first,” she said walking towards him, “you’re actually on time.”
He smiled meekly at her, knowing what she meant. “These are for you,” he said as he handed her a bouquet of bright pink gerbera dasies. “I hope I remembered your favorite.”
“You did. Thank you.”
“So where are we going?”
“Just down the street. I hope you still like Italian.”
“You know it,” he said with a smile.
As they walked to the restaurant, Ann finally began to relax. There was a slight chill in the air and with out a word, Adam draped his coat around her shoulders. “You never did this while we dated,” Ann said with amazment. “I had to ask.” Ann watched as Adam said nothing but had a look of total shame on his face.
The whole night he was a total gentleman. He opened the door and pulled out her chair, two things he rarely did when they were together. Around the time that their main courses came, Adam looked to Ann as thought he wanted to say something. “Adam what is it?” she asked.
“Where do you begin to explain treating someone like I treated you?” He was so ashamed of what he had done that he couldn’t eve look at her. “We dated for two years and for a great part of that, I was sleeping with another girl. There is nothing I can say to make up for that, no excuse good enough.” Adam began to get teary eyed. “I don’t even know why I did it. I loved you.” Now Ann was crying. “Please don’t ever think I didn’t. When she told me I was the father, I was scared shitless. There are no words for how horribly I treated you. In the end I got what I deserved. I was being cheated on, the baby wasn’t mine, and I had lost the best thing that had ever happened to me.”
Adam still wasn’t looking at her. When she had composed herself, Ann spoke. “I don’t know if I will ever fully forgive you, but by this talk and that letter, I have begun the process of forgiving you. You hurt me so bad that I cryed for weeks. I don’t have words for how much I hated you. But I realized that I needed to move on. Plus, you are the reason I am a recording artist, so I can't hate you too much now.”
“Really?”
“That night I told you to leave, I wrote that song, “Wreak of the Day.” I performed it in the pub right across the street.”
“I wondered if that was about me.”
“Well it is.”
For the rest of the night, the mood was light. Ann and Adam sat there and talked about the happy times, about all the crazy shit they did. “Do you remember that time we almost killed Maria’s sister in the bouncy thing that had monkeys on it?” Adam said as Ann almost spit out her drink she was laughing so hard.
“Oh but do you remember the time we had to clean plastic plants because we skipped school.”
“Was that the ‘MIA’ incident?”
“Yep and then I offered you some ‘Buddy Toffer!’”
“God, that was a good year.
As they were getting ready to leave, Ann insisted on paying her part of the check, but Adam would hear nothing of it. When they got outside, they realized that they were going in different directions. Ann went to hug Adam. They embraced for a while and then released. Just as Ann was turning to leave, Adam grabbed her by the arm, swung her around, and kissed her. Ann was so stunned that it took her a while to realize what was going on. Just when she broke the kiss, a flash went off. They had been photographed. “Ann! Ann!” the man shouted. “Who is this and where is Gerry?”
“Gerry?” Adam asked “Who is that?”
“Just get in!” Ann yelled as she shoved him into a cab. When they were in and the driver had been giving her address, she turned to Adam with anger in her eyes. It wasn’t until the man had said his name, that Ann had realized she had not mentioned Gerry to Adam. “What the hell did you do that for?”
“I don’t know. What the hell is going on?”
“I am involved with someone. I know I didn’t tell you. I don’t know why I did that. but why did you kiss me?”
“I thought you wanted me to.”
“When did you get that impression? Just because we had a good evening and you were nicer than I can remember, does not mean that I want to get back together with you.”
“Why can't you just let it go?”
“Because you almost killed me. I thought you loved me. I thought you cared about me. I thought we were going to get married and be together for ever.”
“I did too. I didn’t plan on ending it that way.” They pulled up to Ann’s apartment.
“I bet you didn’t,” she said as she got out. “No man would tell a girl he loved her for two years while for a year and a half be sleeping with another girl and plan on getting the second one pregnant.” When she said that, she slammed the door and ran up the steeps. Adam just sat in the cab and wondered what he had done.
When Ann got upstairs, she was bawling and Lynn was sitting on the couch, waiting for her. “I knew it,” she said. “I knew he would make you cry. What happened?”
Ann preceded to tell Lynn all that had happened. “And then he kissed me. I am not so much angry at him for kissing me, I am more mad that I didn’t say anything about Gerry the entire night. Does that make me a bad person?” she asked as she laid her head in Lynn’s lap.
“I don’t think so honey. Don’t worry about it. I am sure everything will be fine.”

When Gerry woke in the morning, he felt as though he hadn’t slept at all. He kept waking up in the night thinking something was wrong. On the way back from the Starbucks down the street from his hotel, he passed a news stand. As he looked at all the magazines, he saw one and almost dropped his Grande Americano. On the front of several of the tabloids, was Ann, deep in a lip lock with her ex Adam. The headline read “Ann Nevin gets rid of her scott for her ex!” Gerry was so furious, he could hardly speak.

When Ann saw the tabloids the next day, she tried Gerry’s phone. He didn’t answer. She called him every half hour for the next 4 hours and he never picked up. The last time, Lynn and Brendan walked in from their trip to the gym. Ann was on the couch crying her eyes out, repeating, “He won't pick up. He won't pick up.” She was rocking back and forth with a phone in her hand as Lynn pulled her into a hug. She just laied there and cried on Lynn’s shoulder. What had she done. She had thought that meating Adam would turn out bad, but she had never thought that it would have been this bad. Obviously Gerry had seen the pictures. Did he really believe them? Was he going to break up with her?”

Thankfully he had a break in shooting for the day, otherwise who knows what would have happened. As soon as he got back to his room, he collapsed on the bed. he had been able to hold the tears long enough to get through the press outside the hotel asking him about it and into his room. He just laid there for hours watching his phone ring and Ann’s number come up. He wasn’t going to answer it. He didn’t want to talk to her. He picked up his room phone and dialed room service. “Hi, could you send up a bottle of your best scotch and a bucket of ice? Thanks.” When he opened the door to let the guy in, he was red eye and blotchy.
In the next hour he had consumed more than half the bottle and he had no intension of slowing down. He had been hurt, and hurt bad.
