ILY :D
Chapter 23
Alyn felt nice next to Wil’s sore body. He still felt cold inside, but she kept him thoroughly warm on the outside. He wanted to tell her exactly what had been happening. He wanted to spill his guts – not literally, of course – to her and get help and put this whole thing in the past. But right now, all he could think about was the pain he was in and the craving he had for cocaine. He knew he had some in his jeans, but they were over on the chair and Alyn was sleeping next to him. He couldn’t move. He pressed the button on the remote-style control next to him and the morphine being pumped into him increased. He felt relaxed instantly and his cravings slightly withdrew.
Alyn moved next to him slightly and he tried to smile, but he couldn’t. She made him happy but he was beyond her repair now. Jake had made it clear that Wil was at rock bottom as the drug dealer cut the drug taker’s stomach and said, “The cross means you’re fucking banned, Wil. I won’t deal to you anymore and if you come back here your stomach won’t be the only thing I’ll slash.”
He honestly nearly pissed his pants. He couldn’t remember a time when he’d been so scared.
Wil shifted slightly in the bed and rubbed his eyes. He felt terrible, and he felt itchy and hot, like he needed to get out of his own skin. He scratched at his arm, just below his elbow, like it was going to relieve this feeling in someway.
Every sound in the room sounded magnified, and everything seemed clearer, like all of a sudden he was alert to everything going on around him. He noticed that the bed squeaked if you leant too hard on the right side. He noticed that every third breath Alyn took in made a weird noise. Stupid shit that you wouldn’t notice even if you were trying. He thought he could hear birds tweeting outside the window, but he couldn’t be sure. It was still dark out, and all he could really see was the lights from the buildings around the hospital.
Doctors and nurses bustled around outside his room. He was glad that he didn’t have to share his room with anyone, because he hated hospitals enough as it was, without having people around you 24-7 who just want to complain about the hospital food or the television shows they had on. He kept scratching at his arm, but carefully, as to not wake Alyn. She looked peaceful.
Wil saw a doctor outside his door and wondered if he should pretend to be asleep. He didn’t want to talk to anyone, especially not a doctor, about what had happened. He wasn’t smart enough to create a convincing cover story off the top of his head.
Before he could really think of what to do, the doctor had pushed opened the door and smiled at Wil.
“I’m glad to see you up and awake, William. I’m Doctor Juarez.”
Wil nodded in greeting, and said, “Call me Wil.”
“Okay, Wil,” Doctor Juarez picked up the flip chart at the end of Wil’s bed and checked it. Then he came to Wil’s side and started to check his stats.
The Doctor was taking Wil’s blood pressure when Wil asked, “Do you not have nurses to do this kind of thing for you?”
“Well, yeah,” he laughed. “But I thought I’d take care of you this morning. Is that okay?”
“Sure, but you’re not really as attractive as a nurse …”
“Sorry to disappoint,” Juarez laughed again. “I can get a nurse to check you later, if you like. Although I don’t think your girlfriend would be too pleased with you.”
Wil looked down at the top of Alyn’s head and smiled. But inside he still didn’t feel much. He wanted to, he just couldn’t. He didn’t even know why he started banter with the Doctor about nurses – he’s not attracted to nurses. He’s not really feeling attracted to anyone right now.
“That’s true,” Wil conceded. “Never mind then. You’ll do, doc. Am I going to live?”
“Definitely are.” Juarez frowned at the chart he was holding and then put it down, “It looks like you reacted unexpectedly to a certain drug we gave you. Nothing to worry about, we just need to do a blood test.”
“Oh. Um. What, right now?”
“We can wait if you’re tired.”
“Could we?” he asked, scratching at his arm. “I think I need to get my head down for an hour or two.”
“Yeah, sure. We’ll do that later on this morning. I’m sure you’ll be pleased to hear that a nurse will see to you.”
Wil nodded, his fingers still scratching away. Juarez noticed, and said, “Is your arm okay? It looks sore.”
“Oh, I’m just hot and itchy and whatever. It’s okay. I’ll leave it alone.”
“Okay,” he said and carried on towards the door, not looking entirely convinced.
Wil leant his head on the pillow and closed his eyes until he heard the door click shut behind the doctor. And then he opened them again; he couldn’t sleep, his mind was racing. If he has a drug test, then Alyn will know – and maybe more importantly, so will the Doctor, who will have to tell the police – that he’s a user.
The only thing that came to his mind was – escape. Get out, before they do the test. He can’t risk her finding out this way. He can’t risk being caught by the police.
He’s going to do what he does best, and run away like a coward.
