“Take good care of her, will you?” Julia fought against her tears as she hugged Jason. Saying goodbye was harder than she thought now she finally had her best friend back. When she had agreed to join Robbie in LA, she hadn’t thought about the fact that it was pretty far away and that she knew nobody over there. But she needed to go, she couldn’t let Rob go alone, she had to save their relationship.
“Of course I will, you take care of yourself. And Rob.” Jason handed her handbag and walked her to the check in desk, where Rob was already checking them in.
“Jay,” Julia turned around one more time before passing through customs, “Tell Howard I’m sorry.”
Jason nodded. Howard would be livid when he’d find out that Julia had gone to LA for an unknown time without telling him and saying goodbye and that Jason had brought them both to the airport.
Robbie and Julia left through VIP customs and Jason headed towards the car park. He was nervous and felt very conscious of himself, once again, everywhere he went heads turned and people stared and pointed. A flushed looking girl with ginger hair and bright grey eyes asked him for a picture, he told her he really wasn’t up for it. She apologized three times and he felt bad turning her down. He started walking faster to his car and tried to ignore more excited whispers around him.
He thought of how relaxed he had felt when Charlotte was with him that night the documentary premiered, how he had sort of enjoyed the attention. How he had enjoyed showing Charlotte off to the world.
And now, he felt like a hunted dear again. Afraid of the people because they might hurt him or worse, Charlotte.
He hated his insecurity and started getting angry with himself as he reached his car, he remembered how he’d forgotten his Credit Card so he needed to pay at the machines, walking back he aggressively started shoving coins in the machine.
A woman with two small kids stood at the machine next to his, searching her pockets and looking frustrated. The two girls both were nagging to their mum trying to get her attention, sighing she finally found the last coin, put it in the machine and then turned around.
“Come on girls,” she took both her kids by the hand and started to walk away.
Jason smiled at one of the girls who cheekily looked at Jason. Her mother looked at her daughter smiling at Jason and said, “She’s got her mother’s taste in men then.” Jason looked at her in shock, but the woman burst into laughter and continued, “So sorry love, but ten years ago I looked at your pictures on my wall like my little one is looking at you right now. I have to say, it is great to see how well you four are doing, you’re looking great and the concerts were fab last spring. Well done.”
She turned around and headed of to her car with her daughters.
Jason stood there, nailed to ground, mumbling “thank you”, but she was already gone. Suddenly, he felt a lot better.

“It’s beautiful. Honestly!” Dawn nodded her head to put even more proof to her words.
“It’s just a first draft.” Gary nervously tapped his pen on the paper.
“Honey, it’s perfect.” Dawn planted a kiss in his hair, “You should record it.”
“With whom?”
“With whom?! With you guys, with Take That of course!”
Gary looked at her as if she had just suggested setting their house on fire.
“We don’t even have a record deal.”
“Well, get one. Gary, have you forgotten how many gigs you’ve just done? Take That is still alive! This is a Take That song, it’s perfect. I think you’re mad not to record it.”
“We could always record it here, and see where we end up. The lads might not be up for it.”
Dawn made a sound and waved Gary’s half hearted protests away. She got him some more tea and they both looked up as they heard Jason come home, he was still living partly with them.
“You can discuss it now,” Dawn smiled.
One of the kids had heard Jason too and came staggering down the stairs.
“Uncle Jay!” Daniel’s bright voice filled the hallway and a minute later Jason came walking in the kitchen with Daniel hanging from his arms.
“Look what the cat dragged in,” he jokingly said lifting his arm so Daniel floated a few inches above the floor.
“We don’t even have a cat, silly,” replied Daniel which had them all ripple with laughter.

“She has gone where?” Howard looked at Mark in total shock.
“She’s gone to LA with Rob. Today.”
“Today?! But how come…why…I just…” Howard stammered as he tried to understand what he was actually feeling. He was silent.
Emma looked at Mark as she cooed little sounds to baby Elwood that lay pleased looking in her lap, blowing bubbles with nothing.
“Well, as long as she’s happy,” Howard managed to say, but his face told a different story.
Mark looked at Howard, feeling a little sorry for him.
“Don’t look at me like that, I feel like I’m in a bloody episode of Eastenders.”
“Well, Phil Mitchell, don’t worry, you’ll be fine without her too.” Mark patted his friend on his back and stood up to get him a beer.
“Yeah, whatever.” Howard grumbled and blew a little kiss to the only woman in his life, his daughter Grace.

“You like?” Robbie opened the patio doors from the master bedroom and the warm sun filled the light, spacious bedroom, the balcony hovering above the idyllic swimming pool and a free view towards the Hollywood hills.
“I don’t like it at all,” Julia said, pulling Robbie towards her, “I love it!” she ruffled his hair and kissed his lips while silently enjoying the last sun before it set at the horizon.
“D’you know what I like best?” Robbie said, walking out onto the balcony.
“Dunno,”
“See the garden with the big rose bushes?”
“Yeah,”
“They come without the photographers here.”
Julia laughed, inside she felt a little sad though. True, the climate in LA was a very big improvement, but Julia didn’t like the Americans. They had arrived and already four people had made comments about their British accent, two men had called her “honey” instead of “love”, and at the supermarket where they had stopped before arriving at their new “home”, she hadn’t found any tinned beans and was struggling with the Dollar bills.
She swallowed away her tears and cuddled up to Robbie.
“I love you,” he whispered and in return she removed his sunglasses and looked into his green cheeky eyes. She smiled.

“When can I go home?” Charlotte secretly crossed her fingers underneath her sheets.
“That might take a while young lady,” the nurse looked at her earnestly, “you’ve still got to gain a few pounds, you’re still very weak Charlotte. And besides, who would take care of you?”
Charlotte sulked a little. She was fed up with the hospital, the first weeks it had been a blur, she was heavily medicated and hardly knew where she was. But since a few days they had slowly taken her of the meds, they had stopped feeding her specialised hospital food and she was able to hold down normal food. Jason sneaked some of her favourite indulgence food in the hospital sometimes; chocolate and fresh strawberries. With her eating pretty normally, doing her exercises every day to ease her muscles into being used again, she’d felt the energy flow back into her body and she felt like hopping out of the hospital bed and running across the green grass in front of her room.
She wanted to start her life again.
“Hey,” a soft shy voice broke her day dreams.
“Hey, Justin,” Charlotte sat up, “my life saver.”
“ Not exactly.” Justin shook his head and pulled up a chair towards her bed.
“ Don’t keep beating yourself up over this, if you hadn’t been there, things would’ve been totally different today.”
Justin said nothing. He suddenly looked a lot like Jason, his eyes set in worry modus, his one day beard and his strong jaw.
“How are you?” He asked.
“Actually, pretty good. I feel like I can take on the world again. But then I go to the loo, put on some clothes and need to catch my breath for 20 minutes. So I guess my body isn’t that ready yet.”
“It will be, in time. Is Jay coming anytime soon?
“ Normally he’s here just after dinner, so I guess he should be here any minute, why?”
“ Because, I have a surprise for you two.”
Charlotte clapped her hands in excitement, “I love surprises!”

“Surprise!” Jonathan peaked his head around the living room door where Gary and Emily sat behind the piano, singing the star song.
“Hiya,” waved Emily with a knowing smile.
“Hello gorgeous,” Jonathan walked over to her and picked her up, planting a big kiss on her red cheek.
“Me and daddy are singing the star song.”
“Great, let me hear!” Jonathan sat in one of Gary’s white loveseats near the piano.
“Let’s sing then love,” Gary put his daughter on his lap and wrapped his arms around her, as she lay her little hands on top of his it seemed like they were playing the piano at the same time.
“You light, the skies up above me
A star, so bright you blind me
Don't close your eyes
Don't fade away
Don't fade away
Yeah you and me we can ride on a star
If you stay with me girl, we can rule the world
Yeah you and me we can light up the sky
If you stay by my side, we can rule the world”
“The Star Song is great Ems,” Jonathan looked at the strawberry blonde curls that bounced up and down as she nodded in agreement.
“I think the fans might love it too.”
“What?” Gary looked at him in surprise.
“Gary, I’ve had 20 offers from 20 different Record Companies, they want to make an album with you guys. I know you’ve been writing stuff. And this,” he pointed at the piano meaning the song he’d just heard, “Is fabulous.”
“Good Gosh, 20 offers?”
“Yeah well, 15 crap offers, and 5 worth considering. Personally, I think going with Universal would be the right thing to do. They’ve offered to let you do an album with their money, and if neither of you four like it, they won’t release it. They are very confident, I spoke with them today, it all really makes sense. They get the Take That drift, you know, step by step.”
“Wow, I dunno Jon, albums means promotion, it means travelling, it means…more concerts.”
“It doesn’t have to be, like I said, take it step by step. But honestly Gary, have you forgotten how much you enjoyed the tour?”
“Yeah but…that was a one off..wasn’t it?”
“Gary, you’ve written at least five songs during the tour with the other lads. What does that mean?”
“I dunno. Really, I do not know.”
“Think about it Gaz, and talk about it with the other lads.”

“Oh Justin…It’s too much!” Charlotte held the photo’s in her trembling hands.
“No it isn’t, I wanted to. Finally I could do something for me brother and my dearest sister in law.”
“Justin, you’re mad, you shouldn’t have.” Jason held the keys that had fallen from the envelope when he’d opened it.
“You have been so busy, you would’ve never found the time to get yourself a new home. Well, here it is.”
Justin had just given them the keys and photo’s of a totally decorated, finished house for them to move in.
“It’s gorgeous,” Charlotte whispered as she looked at the big white, detached house. It had green trees standing around it, lots of flowery bushes and hedges, a big garden facing south with a huge pond in it which Charlotte had called a “lake” rather than a pond, it had a covered terrace at the back of the house, facing the pond. The photo’s from the inside showed that Justin had complete sense of style and knew his brother and Charlotte pretty well. A huge light grey couch filled the living room, and different colours pillows lay on top of it, mostly white, soft pinkish colours and some chocolate brown nuances and she loved it. The most beautiful piece in the house was the fireplace that was in the living room, cottage style tiles were put around it and soft pink and white candles stood on the mantelpiece. Above it, there was a huge enlarged photo that Charlotte remembered suddenly.
“Jay, look the photo!”
It was the photo of the magnificent nature scene that Jason had took on the Queen Charlotte Islands.
Jason really didn’t want to accept a gift like this from his brother but he knew he couldn’t refuse it. When he had started making money with Take That he had made sure that all his family was well taken care of. This was Justin’s way of saying thank you and refusing this would mean that he’d refuse his gratitude.
“It’s amazing bro.”
“I know, that’s why I also made sure there was a guest room, two actually, there’s a big Orange family for sleepovers.
Now more than ever, Charlotte wanted to get out of that hospital, to go home with Jason. Her new home.

Howard and Gary looked through the paperwork that Jonathan had faxed to Gary, it was the complete offer of Universal Music. The contract seemed almost too good to believe, when they had first signed their record company contracts, it had all been arranged by Nigel and they knew little of the huge things to come at the time. Not that they all hadn’t made enough money, but Nigel had made sure that most of it had gone to him. And now, this company was offering them full creative final editing, no strings attached cd recording and a minimum of two single releases. Almost nothing, but the amount mentioned when the cd would go for sale were amounts even they had never seen before.
“Are they really willing to pay that much?” Howard looked at Gary.
“Times have changed obviously,” Gary muttered.
***
“We oughta do it,” Mark said under his breath, flipping through the pages of the contract and trying not to make eye contact with Jason.
“I dunno,” was his only reply.
Howard nodded, he looked at his friends and felt all of their eagerness to do this and the hesitance to show it.
“I’m in,” Gary finally broke the silence. “I want to record that song we wrote, we can just record it and see from there?”
“Ok, I’m in too.” Howard quickly said and looked at Mark and Jason.
“Alright, me too.” Mark folded his hands, a sign he’d made up his mind.
They all looked at Jason.
He lifted his eyes, as shimmer of fear glanced through it, but his rational feelings took over.
“Okay,” he nodded and smiled.
A sigh went through them, Take That was back.
