Chapter 23: Mischievous Minds
∞♥♥♥♥∞
The twins were five now, and their own little personalities were developing clearer now. Bliss loved anything girly, and loved to play with makeup. Chris and I wouldn’t let her wear it outside of the house, of course, but she loved to play pretend. She was good friends with a few of the neighbor kids, and one kid in particular, Jenny, was two years older than her, and would always bring her makeup kit over when coming to visit Bliss. They would then do each other’s makeup. It was just kid’s make up that one could find in the toy section, and it wiped off easier than regular makeup does. Even so, I didn’t like her wearing makeup. She was growing up fast as it was (as was Colin obviously), and I didn’t want to add to it by letting her wear makeup all the time. Besides, what does a five-year-old need makeup for? Nothing. I didn’t want to be one of those over protective, grouchy fathers though, so I let her play. Chris felt the same way. There was no way she was going out in public with that makeup on no matter how much she begged though.
As for Colin, he and his neighborhood friends were real boys; that’s for sure. They liked to go out and play in the mud. At least, that’s what it seemed like they did. Colin was always coming home dirty. Chris and I had to wash Colin’s clothes more times than I can count. Colin and his best friend, Max, would make forts in the backyard, and play endless games of tag with the other neighborhood kids. I had to wonder where they got all the energy.
One day, the twins came home from playing, and they both had a request.
“Dada, can I have a sleep over? Jenny said she would come, and Gemma, Angel, and Carley said they would come too!” Bliss asked me.
I looked at Chris, who was smiling at her. “It would be her first sleep over. Do you think we can handle it?” he asked me.
I thought about it for a moment. It was hard enough taking care of two kids, let alone six. I looked at Bliss. Her big, pleading, green eyes did me in. I couldn’t say no to our little princess. “If it’s all right with your daddy.” What was one night if it made her happy?
Bliss looked over at Chris. “Please, Daddy? We’ll be good. I promise.”
Chris smiled at her, and gently stroked her hair. “You’re pretty smart for your age, you know that?” he asked her.
She grinned.
“Sure. You may have your sleep over,” he told her.
Bliss clapped her hands and laughed gleefully, then she hugged him. “Thank you, Daddy.”
Chris hugged her back, and kissed the top of her head. “You’re welcome.”
“Hey, remember, I said yes too!” I teased her.
She giggled again, and ran over to me. She hugged me. “Thank you, Dada.”
I stroked her hair then kissed the top of her head. “You’re welcome, princess.”
“I’ll call everyone’s mom and set up a day. Maybe this Friday you can have it,” Chris said to her
Bliss smiled. “Okay.”
I didn’t regret telling Bliss yes. I just hoped that Chris and I hadn’t bitten off more than we could chew. I mean, six kids total? Aye-yi-yi…

After Bliss’ question, Colin had a question of his own. “Daddy, Dad, will you teach me how to ride a bike? I don’ like training wheels. Max doesn’t have training wheels, and neither do Jake, Ryan, Kyle, or Matt. I’m the only one who still needs them.”
“I still have training wheels,” Bliss reminded him.
Colin glanced at her, and then quickly back to me. He gripped my shirt. “Please, Daddy! Teach me how to ride a bike!”
I sighed as I looked down at him, and gently stroked his hair. “You sound a lot older than five. When did you and your sister get so smart?”
Colin didn’t respond.
I sighed. “Yes, of course I’ll teach you how to ride a bike. Dad will too.” Colin had recently started calling Blake Dad instead of Dada. I knew Blake had been a little hurt, but since Bliss still called him Dada, he quickly got over it.
Blake nodded. “Yeah! It will be fun. I’m gonna warn you though. You might fall down a couple times.”
Colin smiled up at Blake. “It’s okay, Dad. I got a helmet and pads.” He touched his elbows and knees when referring to the pads.
“Well, if you’re sure you want to learn even though you might fall…” Blake trailed off.
“I’m sure,” Colin said with a big smile.
“Well, then, okay. We’ll teach you,” Blake told him.
“Yes!” Colin punched a fist I the air and jumped, then he gave me a quick hug, followed by Blake. “Thank you Daddy. Thank you, Dad.”
Blake and I both hugged him, and each took a cheek to kiss. “You’re welcome,” we said in unison.
“I want to learn too!” Bliss said.
I smiled at her. I had a feeling she would once she found out her brother was going to learn. She always had to have everything her brother had. Since they were twins, and Blake and I didn’t play favorites, she usually got her way. Now was no exception. “All right, baby girl. You can learn.”
She squealed, then ran over to Blake and I and hugged us.
Blake and I each took a cheek of hers and kissed her.
“I want to lean now,” Colin said, looking up at us.
“Me too!” Bliss said, grinning brightly.
Blake and I looked at each other, and then down at the twins’ expectant faces.
Blake sighed. “I’ll go get the wrench to take the training wheels off.”
I nodded. “I’ll bring them outside and get them geared up.”
So it was settled. Blake headed to the basement for the toolbox, and I headed to the garage to get the kids in their protective gear. I just hoped the kids found learning as fun as they thought it would be.

“Helmet?” I asked.
“Check!” the twins said.
“Knee and elbow pads?” I asked.
“Check!” they said again.
I sighed. "Well, you’re already to learn then.” I had taken the training wheels off Colin’s bike, and Chris had taken them off Bliss’ bike.
“Yay!” Bliss said, clapping her hands.
Colin grinned, and clapped as well.
“Now, when you ride a bike, you need to kick the kick stand out of the way, then get on the bike with one foot always on the ground as you slide the other one over the bike. You keep it on the ground until you’re ready to pedal,” I explained.
“Let me try,” Bliss said. She got onto her bike, doing just as I instructed her to do. She did pretty good. Of course, Chris held the back of her bike so that it wouldn’t topple down on her. She didn’t pedal, but just put her feet on the pedals for the time being.
“I can do that,” Colin said, getting on his bike the same way.
I held the back of his bike, as Chris had done for Bliss, and Colin got on successfully.
“All right. Are you guys ready to try pedaling now?” Chris asked.
Bliss and Colin both nodded. “Yes!” they said excitedly.
“All right. Dad and I are going to hold on to the back of your bikes as you pedal, but at one point we’re going to let go. We won’t tell you when,” Chris explained.
“Won’t we fall?” Bliss asked, now sounding worried.
“Maybe, maybe not,” I told her.
“If you keep pedaling, and don’t let yourself get scared, you should be fine,” Chris assured her.
“I’m ready!” Colin said. He was always the one more willing to be dangerous, whereas Bliss was the twin who was always a little more cautious.
“Are you ready, Bliss?” Chris asked.
Bliss nodded. “Yes.”
She didn’t sound so sure to me, but her answer seemed to satisfy Chris.
“All right. On the count of three, start pedaling. One… Two… Three!” I said.
Both twins started pedaling down the street then, and Chris and I followed behind them.
We looked over at each other when the twins were halfway down the road, and gave each other a slight nod. It was time to let go.
We did, and the twins, not realizing yet that we had let go, kept pedaling away. However, once Bliss sensed that Chris wasn’t holding on anymore, she looked back. Once her fears were confirmed, she got scared, and toppled over.
Colin looked over to see hat the ruckus was, and lost his balance. He too toppled over; just on the opposite side.
Both wins started bawling.
Chris and I looked at each other and shook our heads. This was so not going to be easy, we both knew.
We sighed, and then ran over to comfort our twins.

“You’re okay, see? No scrapes or bruises.” I kissed Bliss’ forearm. “Aren’t you glad you have your helmet and pads now?”
She sniffled, but nodded her head.
I kissed her cheek. “Do you want to stop for the day?”
She shook her head. “No. I wan to learn.”
I hugged her, and kissed the top of her head. “I won’t let go this time until you say so, okay?”
She nodded, and rested her head on my chest. “Okay, Daddy,”
“Don’t tell anyone I fell, please,” Colin said to Blake.
Blake laughed. “I won’t tell anyone. You have my word. Are you all right?”
Colin nodded. “I think so.”
“Here. Let me help you up.” Blake held out a hand to Colin, and stood up.
Colin took Blake’s hand, and allowed Blake to help him up.
Blake checked Colin over. “Looks like you got away scrape and bruise free too. I’m really glad Daddy and I got you two those pads and helmets.”
“Well, it’s a law you have to wear helmets, but we would have gotten them anyway,” I stated.
He nodded. “Very true.” He tuned his attention back to Colin. “Are you ready to try again?”
Colin sighed. He nodded towards Bliss. “If she can, I can.”
Blake grinned. “That’s the spirit! Never let a girl beat you at anything.”
“Blake!” I scolded.
He blushed. “But if one beats you, it doesn’t make you any less of a man,” he quickly added.
Colin grinned and winked at him. Colin was definitely Blake’s son; that was for sure.
“I won’t let go until you’re ready either,” he assured Colin as Colin and Bliss got back on their bikes.
Colin nodded. “Okay.”
Blake cleared his throat. “Now. On the count of three, start pedaling again. One, two, three!”
The twins took off again, and this time, both Blake and I held onto the seats. We weren’t going to let go until we got the okay to do so.
The twins rode for a while, and right after we turned the corner to head onto the other side of the block (the block was a circle), Colin spoke. “Let go.”
Blake did as told right away, and Colin pedaled down the street.
Bliss took a moment more, but finally, she gave her permission. “Let go, Daddy.”
Chris did as told, and she pedaled after her brother.
They were doing so good! I was so proud of them. However, things soon got bad again.
“Dad, Daddy, how do I stop?” Colin asked.
“I can’t stop either!” Bliss cried out.
I panicked for a split second, and couldn’t think.
Luckily, Blake took over for me. “Press backwards on one of the pedals, and then put your other foot on the ground!”
Colin was able to stop successfully, but Bliss fell. She started crying again.
I snapped out of it, and rushed over to her. “I’m sorry, baby. Your Dad and I were so careful at teaching you how to ride, but we forgot the most important thing—telling you how to stop.” I was so ashamed.
“It’s okay, Daddy. I still love you,” Bliss said, hugging me.
I had tears in my eyes. I truly had the sweetest daughter I could ever have asked for.
“I love you too, baby cake,” I told her, kissing her cheek.
“That was cool! I want to ride again!” Colin said, getting back on his bike.
“I’m proud of you. You did well,” Blake told him. He made to hold the back of Colin’s bike, but Colin wouldn’t have it.
“No, Dad. I want to do this on my own.”
Blake stepped back, looking a little hurt.
“Can I ride my bike to Max’s?” Colin asked.
“I don’t know...” Blake looked at me for backup.
I sighed. Max’s house was just down the end of the street and around the corner. I supposed it wouldn’t hurt. “All right, but watch out for cars. Only ride on the side of the road. Do you remember how to stop?” I asked Colin.
“Push back on the pedal with one foot, and put my other foot on the ground. I’l be careful, Daddy. I promise.”
I sighed. “Well, go ahead then, if it’s all right with your dad.”
Colin looked up at Blake.
Blake smiled. “Go ahead. Just be careful!”
Colin grinned. “I will, Dad! I promise! Thank you!” He then sped off down the block again.
Blake knelt down beside me. He sighed. “They grow up so fast.”
I placed an arm around him, and let him rest his head on my shoulder. “I know.”
Blake looked at Bliss. “You okay, baby cake?”
She nodded.
“I’m proud of you too for tying. Do you want to try again, or do you just want to go back inside?” Blake asked her,
“I wan to go inside. Can I have a snack?” Bliss asked.
Blake and I both laughed.
Blake smiled, and stood up. “Of course you can.” He picked her up, and then we went back into the house.
At least she wasn’t too upset about not learning right away. She was getting there, and I knew it was only a matter of time before our baby girl would know how to ride a bike as well. Until then, I was kind of enjoying her still being our little girl who didn’t know how to ride a bike, even if it was selfish to think that way.

The night of the sleep over came. Colin wanted to have Max spend the night, so we now had eight kids in the house. I wasn’t ready for the responsibility, but I was doing it for Bliss. I supposed it wouldn’t be that bad.
The girls had lain their sleeping bags around Bliss’ bed. To mine and Chris’ surprise, they wanted to stay in her room all night, and just watch a DVD and play.
So, Chris and I got them a new fairy tale DVD that was out, and supplied them with pizza, sodas, and snacks. We left them alone basically, but we did check in on them once in a while.
Colin and Max were in Colin’s room, a little too quiet for my taste. I sensed they were up to something, but whenever I peered into the room, they appeared to just be talking.
I walked into the kitchen, where Chris was standing by the sink, drinking a root beer. “I think they’re up to something. They’re whispering in there, and far too quiet.”
Chris smirked, and set his root beer down on the counter. He pulled me close, and kissed my cheek. “I’m sure they’re just being boys. Let them have a little fun.”
“Well, I’m a boy. Where’s my fun?” I asked, smiling slyly at him.
Chris smirked. “Right here.” He put his hands around my waist, and pulled me in for a kiss.
I hungrily kissed him back.
Suddenly, we heard giggling.
We broke the kiss, and saw Bliss and her friends standing there, watching us.
“We’re out of soda. May we have some more, please?” Bliss asked.
“Uh, sure,” Chris said. He was blushing, and I could tell he was embarrassed by being caught. I would think he'd be used to it by now.
“I’ve never seen two men kiss before,” Angel said as Chris went into the fridge for more soda.
“I have. My uncle’s gay and has a boyfriend,” Gemma said.
The girls, except for Bliss, giggled.
They sure make five-year-olds a lot smarter nowadays,” I muttered.
“I’m seven,” Gemma corrected me.
“Yeah. Jenny and Gemma are seven, Angel is six, and me and Carley are five,” Bliss told me.
I nodded in understanding. “Ah.”
“All right, you guys. You can each have one more soda, but then that’s it. I don’t want you guys bouncing off the walls,” Chris said, handing each girl a 12 ounce bottle of Coke.
“Thank you!” the girls said.
They headed back to Bliss’ room, but Angel stayed back for a moment. She handed me a picture. It had a heart on it along with what looked like a person holding something long in it’s hand. I wasn’t sure what the long thing could be, or if it was even a person holding it.
“I drew this for you. It’s you singing on stage,” she said to me.
I grinned. “Thank you! That was really sweet of you.” I guessed the long thing was a microphone. I leaned down and kissed her cheek.
Angel blushed and grinned. Then, she ran off to Bliss’ room, giggling the whole way there.
“It looks like someone’s got a crush on you,” Chris said, wrapping his arms around me from behind and kissing my neck.
I smirked. “I think you have more than a crush on me. At least, I would hope so.”
Chris rolled his eyes. “Of course I do, baby, but I was talking about Angel.”
I grinned. “Really? I don’t know. I think she was just being nice.”
“She didn’t give me a picture,” Chris commented.
I smirked. “Are you jealous?”
He laughed. “Of a five-year-old? No way. But if she tries to steal my man, I’m gonna have to kick her butt—five-year-old girl or not!"
I laughed, and playfully swatted him.
He laughed too, then we kissed.
Chris was definitely the only one for me. Even so, I enjoyed the picture very much. I was touched. It was also nice that she chose me to have the crush on instead of Chris. Hah Hah….

Blake and I were watching TV and cuddling in our room on the bed, when suddenly, we heard the girls screaming.
We looked at each other, and then quickly jumped out of bed.
We ran over to Bliss’ room, only to find Colin and Max spraying the girls with two giant water guns. Those guns sure could spray! It almost looked like they were using a hose!
“Hey, hey, hey! Knock it off!” Blake said, taking Colin’s gun from him.
I took Max’s. “Where did you boys get these?” I asked. I knew Blake and I certainly hadn’t bought Colin one.
“They were a birthday present,” Max explained. “I brought them over for Colin and I to play with.”
“Why hadn’t we noticed those when he came in?” Blake asked me.
I shrugged.
“Well, spraying the girls is a no, no. You can’t have these back until you go home tomorrow,” I told Max.
Max pouted, but didn’t protest.
“You don’t spray your sister and her friends. They didn’t go over to your room and be mean to you! You apologize right now,” Blake ordered Colin. “You too, Max.”
“I’m sorry, Bliss. I’m sorry Angel, Carley, Jenny, and Gemma,” Colin said.
“I’m sorry girls,” Max said with a defeated sigh.
“It’s all right. I forgive you,” Bliss said.
Her friends all voiced their agreement.
“Now, go to your room and stay there for the rest of the night. You have the DVDs we got you. Watch them,” I told Colin.
“All right, Daddy,” Colin said, his head hung low.
He and Max went into Colin’s room and shut the door without another word.
“Don’t worry; it will dry. They won’t bother you girls again. We promise,” I said to the girls.
They all nodded.
“Bedtime is in an hour and a half, so enjoy the time you have while you have it,” Blake told them.
The girls nodded again, and then Blake and I left the room.
Once we were in the privacy of our own bedroom again, we both burst into laughter.
“Boys will be boys,” I said.
Blake nodded. “Indeed they will be. I think Colin learned his lesson though.”
I nodded. “I think so too.”
Blake got a wicked glint in his eyes. “Now, show me how men can be men.” He pulled off his shirt, and placed one of my hands over one of his well-tones abs (we had been working out together in the gym).
I was already in the mood for him, and this only aided to the fact. My eyes lowered with lust, and I gently backed him down onto the bed.
We grinned at each other, then kissed. I knew we couldn’t have sex with eight kids in the house, but there was no law against making out. And that, I planned on doing a lot of, thank you very much!
