"So tell me,
What's the price to pay for glory?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Kelly!"
Carrie smiled as the Texan was immediately swarmed by kids half their size...well, maybe not half Kelly's size.
"Hey y'all," the Texan drawled with a wide grin. The tiredness immediately fading as soon as she saw their adorable faces greeting her. "Miss me?"
"Duh," Luke rolled his eyes.
"Sarcasm?" Kelly laughed. "And where would you learn a thing like that?"
"I can think of a few places," the young blonde smiled pointedly at her.
"Kelly," a soft voice fussed.
Carrie looked to see Alex trying to push her way through the crowd. She giggled, holding her hand out for the small girl to take as she pulled her forward.
Kelly's smile grew at the sight of her. She knelt down to where she was eye level, glancing up at Carrie who was still holding the child's hand. Carrie smiled back softly.
"How you been munchkin?" Kelly asked, poking Alex's side playfully.
"You know, it's about time you came visit," Alex replied, putting her free hand on her hip.
"Oh really?" she said, struggling to keep a straight face.
"Yea," Alex nodded.
"And why's that?" Kelly asked curiously.
"Because," she said, matter-of-factly. "Carrie sucks at poker, and she's made me lose all my cookies."
"Carrie," Kelly looked up at her, the corners of her mouth tugging upwards. "Is this true? Did you make this poor girl lose all of her cookies in a poker match?"
Carrie's jaw dropped, "No."
"Yes," Alex frowned.
"You ate half of them," Carrie accused.
"Did not."
"Did to."
"Children," Kelly reprimanded. "There are enough cookies to go around."
Alex pulled her hand out of Carrie's crossing her arms over her chest as the country singer did the same.
"What are we gonna do with you?" Kelly asked.
"Guitar hero duel!" Luke cheered.
"Y'all have guitar hero now?" Kelly's eyes lit up.
Carrie wasn't aware of the smile that had formed on her face as she watched the Texan battling one of the younger kids. Kelly's tongue was sticking out, and she was wearing a look of utter concentration as her fingers moved quickly over the colored buttons, not missing a single note.
The song ended, and Kelly lifted her arms victoriously.
"Not fair," the boy protested. "Your fingers are longer than mine."
"Whatever," Kelly replied, holding her hand up. The boy raised his, frowning to find that they were nearly the same size. "Ha. I win. Fair and square."
She locked eyes with Carrie who was shaking her head, laughing, and she handed the plastic guitar over to another child.
"Don't be jealous of my mad skills," Kelly said, walking to Carrie.
"Hey now," she raised her hands in surrender. "I'm merely an admirer. I mean, how many people can say they beat a seven year old?"
"He's eight and a half, easy," Kelly defended, eyeing the small boy.
Carrie chuckled, "You are one of a kind, Kelly Clarkson. Has anyone ever told you that?"
Kelly smiled, bumping their shoulders playfully as they stood side by side, watching the children playing. Alex now had one of the guitars, and Luke was kneeling on the side of her, moving her fingers along with the song.
"She's looking good," Carrie commented.
"Yea," Kelly nodded, taking a deep breath.
"So what's his story?" Carrie asked, nodding toward Luke.
"Oh, Luke? I've talked to his parents a couple times. He was diagnosed when he was three. He's been in and out of here for the past seven years."
"He's really good with Alex."
"Yea, he's an only child," Kelly explained. "But he's always wanted a little brother or sister, but his parents just really can't afford it. Not just the money, but most of their time and energy go to him, they don't think it would be fair. So, Alex is kinda his adopted little sister."
Carrie smiled as she watched Kelly watching the kids fondly.
"What about you?" she asked.
"What about me?"
"Do you want to have kids someday?" Carrie questioned.
Kelly shook her head, "I'd be a horrible mother. I'm way too selfish with my career and my music."
"That's not what I asked," Carrie pointed out. "I asked if you wanted to have kids."
"Yea," she admitted softly. "I do."
Carrie nodded, turning back to the children as well. Kelly smiled as Alex jumped, excited about finally getting through an entire song.
"You're wrong," Carrie said, her eyes remaining to the front as Kelly turned to look at her curiously. "You'd be a great mother."
"What's up?" Carrie asked on the ride to the studio. She could see the lack of sleep catching up with the Texan as she looked down at her cell phone, reading something, sadness gracing her features.
"Nothing," she shook her head, coming out of her daze. "I was just thinking about whether or not I should call one of the guys over there to remind them that I'm coming."
"I doubt they'd forget," Carrie smiled, squeezing her shoulder playfully. "So, after this, you're done, right?"
"Um..." Kelly began guiltily.
"Kelly," Carrie sighed.
"Michael called. We've got a meeting at five."
"Kelly..."
"Then after that, I've got a meeting with my management team. We're trying to decide on concepts for the album cover."
"The album's not even finished yet," Carrie pointed out.
"So?"
"So, do y'all even have a title?"
"No."
"Then how can you have a cover?" she asked.
"I know, but I just thought cause with all the stuff coming up for the charity, that we should just get a head start on this, in case we're too busy later," she justified.
Carrie shook her head as they pulled into the parking lot for the recording studio, "You're crazy."
"Finally," Kelly smiled, walking back into the sound booth, finally satisfied of the song they had been working on. The guy working the soundboard nodded in agreement as she gave him a thumbs up.
Carrie hung up her phone.
"Who's that?"
"Business," she shrugged.
"Do you need to go?" Kelly asked, trying to rub the sleep out of her eyes. "Cause I can catch a cab, no big."
Carrie shook her head, "I told you I'd drive you, so you're stuck with me."
"You sure? Cause I know you're busy right now."
"It's fine. I got a lot of stuff done this past week when you were in Texas," Carrie assured her.
"Maybe I should go there more often," Kelly teased as she pressed the playback button, listening to the song one last time.
