‘Hey tiny girl, I’m mom and this is auntie Jen. I’ve been looking forward to finally getting to see you so much’ said Jade tearfully as she held her less than a minute old daughter in her arms, absolutely exhausted from the fifteen hour labour she had just gone through, Jen by her side all the way through. The last few months of her pregnancy had flown past in a blur of getting their album finished and keeping busy right up until Jade had called Jen at 6.30am one Tuesday morning to inform her that her waters had just broken. Jen had untangled herself from Chris (who was spending a little time with her before going back out to finish their tour of the far east since the Ozzfest had ended) got out of bed and dressed in about 30 seconds flat, trying to wash and brush her teeth at the same time before running out of the front door of her Brentwood residence and driving at 80mph most of the way up over the hills to get to her friend.
‘Look at her, she’s so perfect’ said Jen as she stroked little Jamie’s cheek, recognising straight away from the volume of her cries she had definitely inherited her mother’s lungs if nothing else. She also noticed what a striking resemblance she bore to Stefan, but chose to keep that to herself for the time being. Excusing herself to go and telephone Chris and everyone else that needed to know Jen gave both Jade and Jamie a kiss and left the room to let Steven and Jules in. She hugged and kissed the proud grandparents before walking off down the hallway of the maternity suite at the Cedars Sinai medical centre, elevator bound.
Once the elevator had landed on the ground floor Jen stepped out and strode across the foyer to the main doors, hearing the electric sensor click above her head as they sprang open and let her out into the hospital grounds. Finding a secluded spot Jen lit a cigarette and phoned Chris.
‘6lbs 8oz, mother and baby are doing great’ she said through her laughter as Chris shrieked ‘Has she had it yet?’ down the phone upon answer.
‘Wow, I’m so fucking happy for her, and well done you for staying up for fifteen hours straight with a screaming woman deafening you’ said Chris warmly.
‘Yeah my eardrums are kinda perforated now, and my hand has been used as a biting device too, that kinda hurts’ said Jen, looking down and seeing Jade’s teeth marks in the side of her palm.
‘Well as you as you come home I’ll kiss it all better, and other places too. You know I’m not happy when I go without my morning sex’ said Chris with a laugh.
‘Typical man’ laughed Jen before talking to him for only a few minutes longer as she had many other people to phone. The next were the baby’s godparents, Dime and his partner Rita who were both over the moon to hear some news at last. Rita had called Jules for news earlier that morning and had been told Jade was still in labour, so she and Dime were very relieved to hear all was well.
After phoning Phil but not being able to get him she left a message with his girlfriend Kate and hung up, her thumb hovering over the contacts list button on her cell. There was one more person she thought should know, but didn’t know if it really was her place to tell him.
‘Okay Jennifer, think’ said Jen out loud, crossing the small pathway of the ambulance route outside the ER entrance and heading over to sit on a small grassy verge. If she told him she would risk Jade throwing the mother of all hissy fits at her, but if she didn’t tell him would Jade ever actually speak up? And in telling him she also removed the problem of what Jade still selflessly held her own head in a noose over; the feelings of Hilde. If it wasn’t Jade who said anything to Stefan, then she wouldn’t be responsible Jen thought to herself. It got it out of the way and at least Stefan would know, and be able to decide for himself. Working out the time difference she counted on her fingers and realized it would be 8pm in Norway, she would be okay to call him without waking him.
‘Here goes nothing’ she said, finding his number and pressing call, then suddenly panicking in case Hilde answered the phone. The call had connected and begun to ring in a continental dialling tone before she could back out and hang up.
‘Hello’ he answered on the tenth ring.
‘Stefan, its Jen’ she replied, hearing his lighter click.
‘Jen! Nice to hear from you angel, how’s things? You let that new boyfriend of yours out of bed yet?’ said Stefan, a wry smile curling his lips.
‘Nope not yet, but listen, the reason I’ve called you is quite a serious one, are you sitting down?’ said Jen, her heart thundering in her chest with nerves.
‘Yes, very comfy thank you’ said Stefan as he sat back in his large leather computer chair where he had been reading emails up until the phone had rang.
‘Good, because the reason I called is to tell you Jade just gave birth to your daughter. 6lbs 8oz and called Jamie Kay’ said Jen, her heart leaping against her ribcage so much she felt sick. The line was silent for a few moments.
‘You know I always thought she’d tell me that herself, I kinda put two and two together when I heard she was pregnant, and I know Jade is no slut so it just had to be mine since Jim’s out of the picture’ said Stefan, finally his suspicions over the baby’s parentage confirmed.
‘She knew what kind of a mess that would make for you though, and your marriage, so that’s why she didn’t, and that’s why she will probably punch me out for telling you this too, but I thought you should know. Balls in your court now Stefan, I hope you do the right thing’ said Jen before hanging up. She let out a long breath and flung her body back onto the grass, feeling like a huge traitor. But now, the wheels had been put into motion for Stefan to possibly return to the woman Jen felt he truly belonged with, not the one he was married to.
Over in Norway Stefan put the receiver back into the cradle and drew hard on his cigarette. The love of his life had just given birth to their daughter and where was he? Trapped, that’s where he was. Although he loved Jade more than he had ever loved anyone else, he had meant it when he had recited his vows to Hilde at their wedding; they were no empty words at all. For better or for worse he had pledged to be there for her, forever. He took his vows very seriously, and although he did love Hilde, he was in love with Jade, and now she had his child too. Whatever was he to do? Five months passed, and still with no word from Jade he suddenly found one day his question was answered for him, with disastrous results.
As she lay in bed next to her husband one morning Hilde looked over at him and, like so many other mornings wondered what had caused the change in her husband. For the last five months he had been so quiet and withdrawn, so preoccupied Hilde was by now convinced that he was having an affair. The classic signs were there, he had lost interest in their sex life and was secretive and withdrawn from their marriage, and also something else niggled at Hilde too. The tattoo Jan had etched onto his wrist recently had surprised her, two red Chinese symbols that sat out in stark contrast to the black and white ink of his sleeve, and their meanings too.
When he had arrived home from having it done and she had asked him their meaning he had floundered before answering ‘Pride and strength’. Immediately Hilde didn’t believe that was what they said and had looked up the symbols online and had her suspicions confirmed; they were not the symbols for what he said they were. Reaching down into her bag Hilde removed her camera and gently took Stefan’s arm so as not to wake him, and then took a picture of the tattoo. She then got out of bed and used the remaining five exposures to take pictures of their dog Zeus and their African grey parrot Buddy, then washed and dressed and set out to do some investigation. Firstly she drove to the 1 hour film developers and dropped in the film, then did a quick food shop and stopped off at the vets to get Zeus his worming pills.
Once she was done at the vets and found herself ending up paying a small fortune in toys for her animals whilst she was there Hilde drove back and collected her photographs and then headed to their local Chinese restaurant, glad to find it just opening up to prepare for the many businessmen who vacated the establishment for lunch to arrive.
‘Hello Mrs Hober! So nice to see you but I am afraid we are not taking orders yet’ said the young hostess at the front desk as Hilde walked into the lavishly decorated red and gold restaurant.
‘Oh no I don’t want to order anything, but I want to know if you could help me with a translation please? If I show you two Cantonese symbols can you tell me what they mean? Asked Hilde as she rummaged in her bag for the photographs.
‘Sure I can’ said the girl politely, tossing her bum length black hair over her shoulder and leaning over the desk as Hilde sorted through the photographs and presented her with the one of Stefan’s wrist. The girl studied it for a few moments before answering.
‘That one there says Jamie, and the other says Jade’ said the girl with a smile as Hilde felt the pit of her stomach grow icily cold. She was just about to ask the girl if she was sure when suddenly she felt light headed, and then opened her eyes to see she was on the floor, the girl from the desk looking down on her with concern as well as a few other people too.
‘You fainted Mrs Hober, are you okay?’ said the girl in a worried tone.
‘I need a glass of water if I could trouble you for one’ said Hilde, the cold feeling still swelling in her stomach.
‘No trouble at all’ said the girl who rushed over to where the bottled drinks were kept behind the small bar and fetched out a bottle of mineral water and a glass. Hilde was helped to her feet by two of the waiters and seated in a big comfy red velvet chair while her water was brought back to her.
She took a few grateful gulps and sat quietly until she was feeling okay again and thanked the staff for their kindness as she left. All the way home she cried her eyes out, a feeling of pure rage and also pure heartbreak flood her body. He was having an affair with his ex, and by the looks of things had also fathered her illegitimate child too, why else would he have had the name Jamie etched onto his wrist for all eternity?
Pulling up the handbrake in her Escort Cosworth 4x4 sharply as she entered its parking space at their apartment block Hilde got out and stormed up the stairs, nearly ripping the front door from its hinges as she entered her home and marched across the laminate floor until she got into the living room, where Stefan stood flicking through a magazine.
‘Hey gorgeous’ he said, and then suddenly wondered why his wife looked thunderous. He found out when her fist swung out and made contact full force with his eye.
‘YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE! YOU COMPLETE FUCKING ASSHOLE!’ she roared, both fists punching him over and over in the face.
‘HILDE CALM DOWN! WHAT THE FUCK HAS GOTTEN INTO YOU?’ He shouted back, grabbing his wife’s wrist to prevent his face from any further beating.
‘WHAT’S GOTTEN INTO ME? I THINK I SHOULD BE ASKING WHAT YOU HAVE GOTTEN INTO! OR RATHER WHO!’ She screamed as she was restrained. She pulled away from him and turned her back, finally succumbing to the grief inside and crying her eyes out into her hands.
‘I know Stefan, I know you and Jade are having an affair, and I know Jamie is your daughter’ said Hilde from behind her hands, this time in a much calmer, albeit still grief stricken voice. Stefan felt the bottom fall out of his world; this was the last way he had wanted her to find out, obviously from someone else. Especially since he had finally decided he had to end his marriage himself and confess the truth, he owned her that much but now, now she knew by some other means.
‘Who told you?’ he asked quietly, wanting to go to her and comfort her in some way but realizing that was the last thing she would want.
‘I worked it out for myself, no one told me. That tattoo on your wrist gave it away’ sobbed Hilde, sitting down on the couch and continuing to cry.
‘It happened one time Hilde, no affair, just that one time. And if you will believe me which I’m sure you won’t, I wasn’t far from telling you the whole truth. I didn’t want you to find out like this, I didn’t want this at all but it’s all my fault. I take full responsibility for this and I don’t blame you for hating me’ he said as he sat next to her. Immediately she recoiled from his presence and got up, sitting on the couch opposite.
‘So that’s supposed to make me feel better then? To learn my husband has been planning to leave me for god knows how long for his whore of an ex who couldn’t keep her fucking legs shut?’ screamed Hilde, reaching for tissues to dry her tear sodden eyes.
‘Please don’t call her that’ said Stefan, a deep frown creasing his brow as he rubbed his fingers across it.
‘Well maybe I shouldn’t! Maybe I should send her a present for making me see what a vile cheating sack of shit my husband is! She’s welcome to you Stefan, our marriage is over’ said Hilde firmly as she sobbed.
‘It’s been over since the day Jamie was born, I was just too gutless to tell you that and I’m sorry’ said Stefan, getting up and leaving the house. He needed time to think, and that’s just what he got. Spending six hours just walking through the snow at the bottom of the mountains that surrounded the lake he lived by he lost himself in his thoughts, and then he returned he found all traces of Hilde had gone from their home, with just a note on the coffee table.
‘I’m filing for divorce tomorrow. Go to your family, I never want to see you again’ was all it read. And with that Stefan Hober was free; he just had to see if the two girls he loved most actually wanted him in their lives, or if he would be cast aside by them too. And if he was, he knew he had only himself to blame. Looking down at his tattoo he rubbed his thumb over the Chinese symbols affectionately before sitting down with a glass and a bottle of single malt, managing to finish it by the time the dawn broke on a new day.
