"Carrie, you're welcome to stay here if you want," Kelly said gently as Carrie pulled in front of the apartment complex. She hadn't said a word the whole ride there.
"Really?" she asked, sounding relieved.
"Absolutely," Kelly nodded. "Come on."
Carrie got out of her car, following her to her apartment and in to her room where she sat down heavily on the bed.
"Are you ok?" Kelly asked worriedly.
"I'm so sorry," she shook her head, looking up at her. "I don't understand what's gotten into her lately, but I swear, she's not normally like this."
"It's ok," Kelly assured her. "Thanks for standing up for me. That really means a lot."
"I just wish she'd listen."
"Hey, you still hungry? We have some ravioli if you want."
"Yea, thanks," Carrie nodded.
"Alright. Be right back," Kelly smiled.

Kelly walked back into the room with a bowl of ravioli and two spoons. She froze at the sight of Carrie, laying on her stomach, her shoulders shaking as she cried softly into Kelly's pillow. She put the bowl down on her dresser before climbing onto the foot of her bed, in between Carrie and the wall, crawling her way up before laying down beside her.
"Carrie?"
The taller blonde, turned her head to face her.
"What's wrong?" Kelly whispered, bringing a hand up to gently brush away the tears on the other girl's cheeks.
"I don't know how things got so screwed up," she replied.
"They're not that bad," Kelly countered.
"Yea...they are."
"Is there anything I can do to fix them?"
Carrie shook her head.
"You want to take a nap?"
Carrie nodded, "You'll stay with me?"
"Sure."
"You'll actually sleep?"
Kelly smiled softly, "If it'll make you feel better, then yes."
"Ok," Carrie nodded, sitting up as Kelly pulled the blankets out from beneath them.
"You're comfortable?" Kelly asked, pulling the sheets around them.
"Yea."
"Good," Kelly nodded, placing a curl behind her ear. "It'll get better. I promise."
"Thanks," Carrie smiled.

Jeanne walked into the apartment, surprised by the silence. Kelly was anything but a quiet child. She made her way to Kelly's room, opening the door carefully. Her heart melted at the sight of the two girls completely passed out in bed, their backs facing each other. She had to remember to thank Carrie when they woke up for being able to actually get Kelly to sleep.

Kelly stretched, groaning softly as the feeling of fingernails softly scratching her back.
"Something smells good," she mumbled, curling back up, allowing Carrie to continue to run her nails over her shirt.
"Yea, I heard someone moving around your kitchen," Carrie replied.
"Probably my mom," she sighed in content.
"You have goosebumps," Carrie laughed, rubbing a hand up and down her arm.
"That's ok, go back to doing what you were doing--it felt good."
"Come on," she smiled, sitting up. "I know you're starving, cause I'm starving."
"Alright, alright, but we'll continue this later."
Carrie smiled, as Kelly crawled over her, "And when's my turn?"
"Hmm," Kelly said thoughtfully, offering her a hand up with a smile. She pulled her into a hug, her smile faltering at the feeling of Carrie holding her tightly. "You ok?"
"Yea, thanks for this."
"Anything you need," Kelly replied, rubbing her back as she pulled away.
"You're something else, kid. You know that?" Carrie grinned, reaching up to ruffle her hair.
Kelly scrunched her nose, "Kid? You're only a month older than me."
"Would you rather I call you baby?" Carrie asked, pinching her cheek teasingly.
"Ugh," Kelly rolled her eyes, walking away.
"You know what? I like that," Carrie nodded, following her. "That's what I'm gonna call you from now on."
"No you're not," Kelly warned over her shoulder.
"You're no fun," Carrie laughed as they walked into the kitchen.
"Hey Mom," Kelly smiled as her mom hugged her.
"Hey Mrs. Taylor," Carrie greeted, accepting a hug as well.
"You girls hungry? I thought I'd make up for missing lunch," Jeanne explained.
"Mom, you didn't have to do that," Kelly replied, trying to sneak a taste from one of the pans.
"Don't you dare," Jeanne swatted her hand away with the spoon, making Carrie laugh. "Now go set the table. It's almost ready."
"Yes ma'am," Kelly sighed.

Carrie stretched out on the short Texan's bed as Kelly moved around her, trying to get all her school stuff ready for the next morning, "Your mom is an amazing cook."
"Yea, she's pretty good," Kelly agreed.
"I wish I had your family."
"No, you don't. Your family is great. Y'all are just going through a tough time."
"Kelly, I can't remember the last meal we've had with all three of us when there wasn't any kind of tension."
"Well, that was the first time that my mom, dad, and I have actually been home at the same time for a meal in God knows how long. I'll take the tension."
Carrie turned onto her side, curling up as she watched her busy about.
"You know you're welcome to stay here tonight if you need," Kelly commented, her gaze gentle.
Carrie smiled appreciatively, "Thanks, but I shouldn't. I've already pushed my luck enough for one day,"
Kelly sighed, sitting in front of Carrie's stomach on the bed.
"Tired?"
"If I'm being honest, I don't remember the last time I wasn't, it's almost become more of a second thought, you know? Always there, but I keep pushing it aside."
Carrie placed a hand on her arm.
Kelly smiled, patting her hand.
"Lay down," she urged as she turned onto her back, tugging on her arm.
Kelly nodded, climbing over her to lay in between her and the wall. "I really am glad that you opened up to me about your dad," she yawned, gazing up at the ceiling "The fact that you trust me that much, really means a lot to me."
"I needed to tell someone, and I knew you wouldn't judge me or anything."
Kelly tilted her head to the side, resting it against the taller girl's shoulder. Carrie did the same, placing her cheek atop of Kelly's head.
"How many songs have you written?" Carrie asked curiously, noticing the keyboard resting against the side of the bed.
"A few," she replied, nonchalantly.
"When did you start?"
"I always wrote a lot, like a journal, you know? It was the only way for me to really get my anger and confusion out after the divorce. And then when I got my keyboard, my writing just naturally evolved into songs. It's funny, because I was writing songs before I even knew I could sing."
"Do you remember the first actual song you wrote?"
"Yea," Kelly laughed softly.
"Would you sing it?"
"Um, alright," she nodded before singing softly. "If you could see inside my head, then you would understand..."
Carrie smiled at how soothing her voice sounded, "You wrote that in the fourth grade?"
"Yep."
"That's pretty deep for a fourth grader."
"Whatever," Kelly rolled her eyes.
"I heard you got a full ride to Berkley and a couple other places."
"Where you heard that?"
"In choir class, some kids were talking."
"Yea, I did."
"That's pretty amazing," Carrie commented.
"Thanks."
"I also heard that you're not going to accept any of them."
"Where'd you hear that?"
"Choir class."
Kelly shook her head, "I think I might ask Mrs. Glenn to reassign your chair or something. The people sitting next to you talk too much."
"So it's true?"
"Yea, I plan on saving enough money to move out to L.A. as soon as I can after we graduate."
"What about school?"
"Did my mother put you up to this?"
"No," Carrie laughed softly.
"I don't know," she shrugged. "College just really doesn't seem like the place for me. Besides, this way the scholarships can go to someone who really deserves it."
"So, your mom isn't too happy about it?"
"Not really, but I think she understands."
"My mom would freak if I told her I wasn't going to college," Carrie replied as Kelly slid their hands together.
"No offense, but I'm sure your mom would freak about a lot of things."
"True," she nodded, earning a laugh from Kelly. "Are you nervous about moving out to L.A.?"
"Not really. I know this is what I'm meant to do. I'm supposed to be a singer."
Carrie turned, kissing the top of her head, "When you become a huge star and need a back up singer, call me up, ok?"
Kelly laughed, "Please, you're gonna be the one I'll be competing against for a number one song."
"So tell me about this play," she smiled, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. "Brigadoon? What the heck is that?"
+++++++++++
Carrie laughed, reaching out to ruffle Kelly's hair as they walked down the hall.
Kelly merely grumbled in response.
Carrie had managed to get her to talk herself to sleep the night before, and after finally getting her to let go of her hand, she left to go back to her house. When she had gone to pick up the short Texan that morning for school, she found her still out cold on her bed, not moved from where she had left her.
"I think I might skip English," Kelly frowned, digging through her locker.
"You can't. You've got to work to make up for the stuff you got zeros on when you were suspended," Carrie reminded.
"I just want to go back to bed."
"You can sleep in class like you always do."
"I do not," she replied indignantly.
"Yea, you do," Carrie smiled.
"Well, it's not my fault they aren't teaching me anything I want to know."
"You can't have just choir classes."
"Says who?"
"The government."
"We need to work on overthrowing them," Kelly nodded, walking with her to her locker.
"I'll come visit you in jail."
"Bring a shank while you're at it. I'm not becoming someone's bitch."
Carrie laughed loudly, "I really didn't think it was possible for you to become any more entertaining, but I was wrong. This half-awake thing is great."
Kelly shrugged, giving a half smile to someone who waved in passing, "You want to come to Chili's with us this Friday?"
"Us?"
"You know, me, Ashley, Jebbie, Lyndsey, Mary...us."
"Yea, sure, what's the occasion?"
"None of us have work, and I've been craving it."
"You've been craving Chili's?"
"It's like the best place ever."
"Sure..." Carrie nodded, disbelievingly.
"Seriously, it's better than Disney Land."
