Chapter 24 What Goes Around, Comes Around
It was almost 3:30 when Vin finally woke. He turned over reaching for Raven but her place was empty. Listening carefully now he could hear her downstairs, the smell of coffee and the sound of dishes clattering confirmed that she was in the kitchen. He rolled over onto his back and allowed his thoughts to drift back to this morning. They’d come very close today, close to not making it back to each other, and even though they’d made up he couldn’t help but wonder about the effect this man was having on her.
“There’s more to this story than just dating,” he thought to himself, and wondered why in the three years that they had been together she’d never really talked about him. Oh she’d mentioned him, back when they first met…that she ‘had someone’, but she never really went into the details. It wasn’t like her to keep secrets, and yet he knew nothing about this man. He pushed back the comforter and made his way to the bathroom, turning on the shower and stepping in he told himself that this was something they definitely needed to talk about…”Yes” he thought, “it would be a big mistake not to get to the bottom of this…”
Raven poured herself a cup of coffee and sat at the table while she waited for the dishwasher to finish its cycle. Being with Vin again was everything she’d hoped it would be. Still, her thoughts drifted back to Eric.
She sat there thinking about the day he left for Chicago, the things they’d said and the promises they’d made. They knew it would be difficult maintaining a long distance relationship, but they were determined. She made him swear that he would not go away and forget her, it was the only way that she could handle his leaving. And he kept his word, remained true to his promise…in the end it was Raven who faltered in her strength of purpose. She’d gone out to California to visit some friends from college, and it was then that she met Vin.
She told him right off the bat that she “had someone,” but he was persistent, and a boyfriend a thousand miles away was not something that he intended to concern himself with. He wined her and dined her, introduced her to all the places and people she’d only dreamed or read about. When she returned to N.D. he pursued her still, calling every few days and sending her little gifts; and even though she spoke to Eric almost every night she failed to tell him what was happening with her life. She told herself that there was really no harm in it as long as she didn’t let it go too far. It was just a harmless flirtation, after all Vin was in California. It really hadn’t occurred to her that this was a man who had the means to be on your doorstep within hours if he chose to, and he chose to.
By the time she realized just how deep she was into this new “relationship” the damage was done. Vin had shown up for his first visit to her home unannounced, he’d taken a taxi from the airport and as you can imagine, small town…big mouths. The fact that he was in town and “who” he went to see was circulating on the grapevine before he stepped over her threshold. The rest? The rest as they say is history.
Aaron Andrews found out about her visitor from his friend Anita who worked the reservations desk. He called Raven that night and confronted her about her ‘guest’ warning her that if she didn’t tell Eric what was going on…he would, stating emphatically that "He deserves better than this from you.” When she finally worked up enough nerve to come clean Eric was devastated, and it didn’t take long for that devastation to turn into anger.
“So what has all this been for?” “Why am I here working my ass off if there’s nothing left to come home to.” he screamed at her over the phone.
She tried to soften her tear filled admission with the fact that they hadn’t “done” anything, they were just ‘talking’, ‘seeing’ each other occasionally, and that she was still in love with him, but Eric would have none of it…
“You shouldn’t even be doing that much!” “Do you know how many women have hit on me since I’ve been here?” “Oh wait…I forgot…of course you do, cause I tell you everything…I’m the only one who’s in the dark here!”
“They come at me and I let ‘em know up front…I’m not interested, I have a woman…at least I thought I did!” “Damn Raven! I cannot believe this shit!” “I’ll tell you this though…If you think that I’m going to sit here every night wondering about what you’re doing or not doing back home…you-are-mis-ta-ken!”
“So, since you’re already seeing ‘Mr. Wonderful’…you keep right on seein’ him, just don’t expect me to be standing in the wings like some monk waiting for you to make up your mind who you want.” And with that he hung up the phone.
His phone calls stopped after that, and he wouldn’t answer any of her letters. And she wrote, boy did she write…she wrote letters like she owned the post office, but Eric had always been stubborn—especially if he’d been hurt. And he was hurt. His older brothers were particularly protective, Aaron who normally would have tried to make peace between the two of them told her that he couldn’t help her with this… that he still loved her like a little sister, but it was her mess—he hoped that she could fix it for everyone’s sake, but she had to fix this on her own. Brandon was less diplomatic. He’d watched these two coming together since they were in grammar school, watched them fight each other’s battles, learn together and teach each other.
He knew things about them that no one else did--he didn’t want to choose sides, but if he had to then he’d stand with Eric, and it pissed him off that she’d put him in that position. So much so, that almost two months went by before he would even speak to her. In the end it was Standing Elk who finally put a stop to it all. He called Eric and had a long heartfelt talk about ‘relationships’, the ones that work and the ones that don’t. He reminded Ric that he and Raven had had been friends for 22 years…he knew of marriages that hadn’t lasted that long. Seemed, to him, a shame to throw away that kind of friendship. Then he just sat and spoke of the things he remembered about them…everything, from the day they first met. He likened this situation to that one saying,
“I wonder how different your life would be today if you hadn’t gotten that black eye?” “It didn’t keep you from being friends then…it shouldn’t keep you from being friends now.” “This is only a black eye—it doesn’t look to me like the fight is over yet.” “But you think about it...”
And he did, he thought about it continuously for the next two days; on the third day he called her. When she picked up the phone Raven was thrilled to hear his voice. They talked for hours, well into the early morning. She explained that she wasn’t really ‘involved’ with Vin yet, just talking right now, nothing serious. In the end they agreed that maybe for now it was best that they just keep things “loose,” make it easy on both of them and then see what happens.
Now he was back, and this time she was on the other end of the stick, struggling to come to terms with a man who had cheated on her…the irony of it all did not escape her; but the question that plagued her now was “Is Eric still in love with me?” or is he just giving me a little tit for tat? A little payback? “Don’t guess I could really blame him if he was, he was totally blindsided by me and Vin.” “Guess it really is true, ‘What goes around comes around’, and sometimes it comes around a lot faster than you expect.”
Seeing him again had been…unsettling, after all this time he still had the same effect on her, and she couldn’t quite come to grips with that. She knew Vin loved her, she knew that, but Eric…. God! Eric was like a part of her, a piece that had been missing and had now returned. She thought back to that moment last night when she opened the door and first saw his face, that sweet face that she knew so well. At that moment, “Lord help me,” she thought…at that moment Vin had been the furthest thing from her mind. Was it just nostalgia? Things between her and Vin had been so chaotic…was it just wanting things to be ‘normal’ again? Stable? Dependable? Heaven knows, Eric represented all those things for her.
“It can’t be more than that” she murmured to herself, “It can’t be….”
