I know it's been a while, but it's hard to update when you move, lol. Hopefully, you guys are still interested in the story.
Canadiangurl, I'm sorry if the part about Kelly and Kellie was confusing in the last update. Stephanie knows that Kelly and Carrie are friends. It wasn't until after they started to date that Carrie stopped talking to her family as much, so she knows there's a Kellie and a Kelly.
Ch 21
Carrie let out a frustrated sigh as she found the kitchen empty. She had no idea where Kelly was, or when Kelly had left. The only thing she was sure of was that she and Kelly had decided to take a nap together; a nap she woke up from alone. Carrie ran back upstairs to Kelly’s room to get her phone. She wasn’t worried exactly since she had only been up for fifteen minutes, however she had been asleep for probably two hours. Kelly could be anywhere. Carrie took a deep breath and called Jason. She didn’t know what else to do.
Jason casually checked his phone; glad for the respite from the show his mother was making him watch. He was looking forward to having his mother’s attention off of him, dinner couldn’t come soon enough, it seemed like at least once a day his mother had asked him when he was going to ‘settle down’. He loved Kelly, but she was so going to owe for the next year. “Mom, I’ll be back in a sec.”
Jeanne watched Jason get up to leave the room. She had to smile at her son’s manners. “Okay, sweetie. I’ll pause the show so you don’t miss anything.” She had tried to stay out of Jason’s way all week, but she did enjoy getting to watch her favorite shows with her kids when she had the time. It didn’t matter to her that she had already watched the shows, she just liked sharing something with her children since they were away so much.
Jason answered his phone once he was out of the living room. He absently wondered if Carrie was calling because she needed the number for the fire department. “Sup, Care? I thought we weren’t going to be hearing from you guys until dinner tonight?” Jason took a seat on the edge of his dining room table and grabbed one of the cookies from the stack his mother had made the day before. At least there were a few perks to spending his vacation with his mother.
Carrie held in her disappointed sigh at Jason’s question. There went the hope that Kelly had gone over to Jason’s to spend some time with family. “I wouldn’t normally call, but I didn’t know what else to do.” Carrie walked out of the room and started her search for Kelly again. “This is gonna sound silly, but I can’t find Kelly. We took a nap, and when I woke up, she was gone. I’m sure it’s nothing, and I’m missing the note she left, or she’s just out riding or something, but I thought-”
Jason stood up as he interrupted Carrie. “It’s fine. I’m glad you called. Stop and take a deep breath, okay?” He was already halfway to the front door, although he stopped when he remembered that he couldn’t leave without telling his mom what was going on. “Were all of the horses in their stalls?” He had an idea of where Kelly was, but he wanted to be sure before he mentioned anything to Carrie.
“Uh…” Carrie shut her eyes as she tried to remember. “Yes. They were all there. All the vehicles are still here, I think.” She opened her eyes and headed towards the stairs so that she could check again. “I got up and didn’t think anything of it when she wasn’t in bed. It wasn’t until I got downstairs though that I realized the house was too quiet and started to look for her. I checked everywhere. Then I called her, just thinking she was out, and the phone was right next to me-”
Jason let Carrie ramble to him until she confirmed to him that Kelly hadn’t taken off in any of the vehicles. “Good. Head back inside, Care. How long were you asleep?” He returned to the dining room and sat down on the table. He knew exactly where Kelly was, and if their mom wasn’t with him, he would have headed over and gotten Kelly himself. He couldn’t believe Kelly sometimes.
“A couple hours? Not any longer than that. We had gone out riding, and then we ended up running around, so we came back for a nap. I don’t know why I thought that she would actually stay asleep though.” Carrie shook her head; she felt much calmer now that she was on the phone with Jason. “I’m gonna get a lowjack on her. I swear. She left me in a movie yesterday and came back with a bunch of candy ten minutes later. The only thing that kept me from looking for her was that she had already teased me about being over protective.”
Jason chuckled even though he knew that Carrie was still concerned about Kelly. “I know what I’m getting you for Christmas.” He glanced around to make sure that his mom hadn’t snuck up on him, and then he got serious. He could help Carrie out without letting her know anything that Kelly hadn’t told her. He wasn’t going to let her worry. “Are you still downstairs? Okay. Go towards the stairs, but go down the right hallway when you get to them. There’s like five doors if you went down the right hallway. You’re looking for the door that’s closed. I’m telling you now, it’s locked.”
Carrie followed Jason’s directions quickly, though she was a little thrown when she found most of the doors to the rooms were closed. She remembered Kelly showing her two of the rooms, but not the others. “Which one is supposed to be the locked one? Think. I’m not gonna try all of them.” Carrie stopped and stared at the doors as Jason laughed at her. She would have been annoyed with him, but she suddenly realized why she didn’t know what the rooms were. “She’s writing isn’t she?”
“Yes, she is. She’ll come out soon enough. The time probably just got away from her. She wouldn’t leave you alone for too long.” Jason grabbed another cookie and munched on it as Carrie thanked him. “No problem. And don’t feel bad about calling, she wanders off all the time. I’m just glad she was at home because we could have been looking until dinner if she wasn’t.”
Carrie chuckled at Jason’s joke while she eyed the locked doors. She was tempted to try them, to find out which one Kelly was in, but she wouldn’t interrupt Kelly. “You’re gonna have to tell me some stories tonight. It sounds like she’s got a habit of disappearing on people.”
“That she does.” Jason laughed with Carrie. He had plenty of stories that would embarrass Kelly, though he had a feeling that Carrie didn’t want to hear any of them now that she had found Kelly. “All right, well, I’ll let you get back to telling Kelly about your joint Christmas present. See you in a bit, Care.”
“Okay. Thanks again, Jase.” Carrie ended the call, and then pocketed the phone without looking away from the closed doors. She had noticed that Kelly hadn’t shown her the writing room. She wasn’t upset though; it wasn’t like Kelly had tried to hide the existence of the room from her. Carrie considered her options for a moment before she turned and walked to the kitchen.
There was a part of her that wanted to find out what Kelly was working on; after all, she had invited Kelly to come to the studio while she recorded a song, so she was all about sharing that side of their lives. She had also accepted her friends and Kelly’s help with her own writing room. Carrie knew it wasn’t the same though; Kelly was writing. She walked into the kitchen and looked through the cupboards to see what kind of supplies Kelly had in the house. She had thought about making a dish for the dinner with Jeanne and Jason, but she had thought she wouldn’t have the time to make something.
“There’s got to be something in here I can make that all three of them will eat.” Carrie snickered at the things she found in the cupboard. Jason and Kelly would be easy enough to please; Jeanne would be harder though since she had no idea what the older woman liked to eat. She started to pull common ingredients as she checked the clock to see how much time she had. If she hurried, she could make something from scratch, depending on whether Kelly came out of the room anytime soon and if Kelly had enough in the pantry. “I’m so getting a lowjack on her, and then I’m taking her grocery shopping.”
****
Kelly quietly closed the door with a smile on her face. She had tried her best to fall asleep with Carrie; she just hadn’t been able to stop thinking long enough to relax. She walked down the hallway towards the stairs, oblivious to everything except her thoughts, ready to her finish her nap with Carrie. Kelly hummed the simple guitar melody to the song she had finished, an email already in her music director’s email with notes, but an intriguing smell made her divert her course towards the kitchen. She could go for a snack, and hopefully she could get her mom out of the house before Carrie woke up and realized they had company.
Kelly came to a halt when she saw that it was Carrie in her kitchen. A quick glance at the clock on the microwave showed her that she had been lost in her own little world for much longer than she had thought. “Crap.” Kelly walked forward, glad that her mumbled curse hadn’t attracted Carrie’s attention. She silently debated over whether she should apologize or act nonchalant, but a small growl from her stomach announced her presence before she could decide.
Carrie struggled to hold in her laughter. She knew Kelly was behind her. She had heard when Kelly left the writing room, and the curse, she just thought that she would try not to attract Kelly’s attention. She didn’t want to make it so that Kelly felt as if the other girl had to share whatever song Kelly had worked on. However, she thought her actions were ridiculous now that she couldn’t ignore that Kelly was in the kitchen. “Kelly, that better be you, cuz I swear if it’s your brother I’m seriously gonna take him to the doctor. It’s ridiculous how the two of you show up whenever someone finishes cooking something.”
Kelly blushed as Carrie faced her. “You’re just mad that you don’t have the same sixth sense.” She crossed her arms over her chest at the sound of Carrie’s laughter. She guessed that it was a good sign that Carrie was joking and not angry that she had disturbed their nap.
“Baby, it’s not a sixth sense.” Carrie reached out for Kelly and brought the smaller girl in for a loose embrace. “It’s the Clarkson genes.” As Kelly’s blush reddened, Carrie leaned down and sweetly kissed Kelly. “And before you ask, no, this food is for the dinner with your family.”
Kelly happily pouted and wrapped her arms around Carrie’s waist. “I can’t even get a little taste? I mean, we are going to eat it tonight, so what’s it matter if I eat a bite or two early?”
Carrie bit her lip when she noticed Kelly’s attention turn to the dish she had resting on the counter. “If you want to burn your tongue, go ahead. It’s the only time you’ll get to try it before dinner tonight because I plan on wrapping it up as soon as it is cool enough.”
Kelly really didn’t want to burn her tongue, although she didn’t want to stop their teasing either since it was the best way to divert Carrie so she could be sneaky. “You make me food and tell me I can’t have any? That’s just mean.” She wished that her lips would quit smiling; it was hard to fake being upset when Carrie was so cute.
“No, it would be mean of me if I didn’t distract you from the food I made.” Carrie kissed Kelly to cut the other girl off from returning a retort. She knew their flirting could go on for a while, and she wanted a kiss or two since Kelly had skipped out on their nap, even if it had been to write a song.
Kelly chuckled into the kiss, the last of her earlier thoughts vanishing with each soft touch of Carrie’s lips. She pulled back, so that she could try to get at the food Carrie had made, but Kelly couldn’t force herself to look away from the content expression on Carrie’s face. She wrapped her arms tighter around Carrie and mentally reminded herself of how much she loved the younger girl.
“Really? One kiss is all it takes?” Carrie grinned in an attempt to get Kelly’s attention. She didn’t know what to think of the way Kelly was staring at her. If she let her imagination run away, Carrie would speculate that Kelly was staring at her, trying to decide something, and Carrie wasn’t very sure that she could handle one more hurdle after the emotional few days they’d had. “Hey, I know I’m good, but you owe me a couple more kisses that I didn’t get after our nap.”
The mention of the nap brought Kelly out of her thoughts, and she speedily pushed up on her toes and kissed Carrie again. The best way to keep her mind on Carrie was to kiss her girlfriend, and just maybe she could get Carrie to hand over the dish so she wouldn’t have to be sneaky. Kelly carefully directed Carrie back until the blonde’s back was against the nearby counter, all the while she sweetly kissed Carrie, even though she knew Carrie wouldn’t be satisfied.
Carrie waited for a joke or a move to try to grab a spoon, or something, on Kelly’s part, but there wasn’t any change in Kelly’s actions, just short kisses that she thought were teases. She brought her hands up to Kelly’s neck and gently held the other girl in place, and then she deepened their kiss since Kelly had decided to tease her for not giving in on the dish she had made. Carrie was sure that she wasn’t being presumptuous because Kelly had backed her up against the counter… “Kel.”
Kelly didn’t want to hear about how Carrie thought she was messing around, which she had been at first, though she wasn’t any longer. “Hush, I’m not teasing you.” There was no way she could play around for too long when it came to kissing Carrie. Kelly stepped into Carrie’s space a bit more to bring their bodies into full contact. She held in a groan and moved her hands farther up Carrie’s back as the blonde kissed her harder in response; Kelly forgot all about the original reason behind her kisses and caressed Carrie’s shoulders while Carrie’s hands drifted into her hair. There was definitely no way she could screw around when it came to the amazing girl in her arms.
Carrie forgot about any lingering doubts about Kelly’s candor the moment the older girl pinned her against the counter despite the fact that Kelly still fervently touched her shoulders. She let her hands fall to edge of Kelly’s shirt and swiftly started to pull it up, intent on feeling even more of Kelly against her, but the timer on the stove rang out shrilly. Carrie would have cursed the stupid appliance, though she couldn’t because Kelly hadn’t broken their kiss. With a frustrated groan, Carrie tilted her head back as she disappointedly brushed her hand down Kelly’s back during her reluctant release of the brunette’s shirt. “I have to put the food away now.”
Kelly stopped herself before she asked what food Carrie was talking about, however she couldn’t keep the pout off her face at her realization that their making out was over because Carrie had let her go. Kelly cleared her throat and took a step back; she refused to let go of Carrie though, so she wrapped her arms around Carrie’s waist and stared at her girlfriend. “I swear, I’m not out to try to sneak an early bite any more!”
Carrie chuckled at the exasperated complaint, even though she was just as frustrated as Kelly. “I know, and if this wasn’t for the dinner with your mom, I would say screw it.” Carrie bent forward and briefly kissed Kelly before she slid away and turned off the timer. “It is dinner with your mom though,”
Kelly really wanted to go with the idea that Carrie had brought up, however she knew she couldn’t. She was happy that Carrie wanted to impress her mom, not as happy as she would be though if they had been able to continue. Kelly hugged Carrie from behind while she listened to the halfhearted words being offered as compensation. “You know I was kidding all those times before about you trying to impress Jason, but right now, I think I’m right.” Kelly smiled brightly when Carrie turned around in her arms and arched an eyebrow at her. “And since I’m the Clarkson that you’re dating-”
Carrie brought her hand up and placed a finger over Kelly’s lips so that the brunette would know not to finish the sentence. She really didn’t want to test just how much she was committed to impressing Jeanne with her cooking skills, not after she had managed to make something from scratch; a feat with the lack of cooking supplies Kelly had in the house. “We’re going swimming. I’m going to wrap this up for dinner tonight, and you go grab my suit and change. Okay?”
It very much wasn’t okay with Kelly, at least not until she remembered that swimming meant seeing Carrie in a bathing suit. Of course, then she remembered how Carrie had packed for the trip, and she pouted even harder. “You couldn’t forget to pack a bathing suit, but forgot to bring enough tees and tank tops?” Kelly kissed Carrie’s finger and pulled away before Carrie could get a word out. “What if I go get mine and-”
“Nuh uh.” Carrie interrupted and moved farther away so that she couldn’t be tempted by any cute looks Kelly might be giving her. If she didn’t look, then she didn’t have to think about how much they both wanted to go back to making out. “I brought two, and if you let me finish up this dish for dinner, then you can pick which one I wear during our swim.”
Kelly went over her options for a moment in her head. “Deal. Though you should probably hurry up.” Kelly quietly giggled and began to leave the kitchen. “I mean, you might have just thought that you packed them. You know you can be absent minded sometimes, Care.”
“Do you want to go swimming or not?” Carrie didn’t bother to look in Kelly’s direction. She knew that her words would do the trick and get Kelly to go with the plan. Instead, Carrie went about wrapping up the dish as quickly as she could. She laughed softly when she heard Kelly grumble quietly out of the room.
****
Kelly took one last look at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. She wouldn’t normally wear a two piece suit to go swimming unless she was at the beach; she just wanted to make sure that her girlfriend knew exactly what she was missing out on though, so she was in the suit that Ashley assured her was sexy. Kelly flipped off the lights in the bathroom and subconsciously fixed her briefs as she walked over to Carrie’s suitcase. “Crazy girl, already packed.”
She wouldn’t have bothered to pack until she absolutely had to, but Carrie had done so after breakfast. Kelly actually thought the eccentricity was a little cute, she really enjoyed how Carrie could be so put together and still know how to have fun, however at the moment, she didn’t like that she had to go through Carrie’s things to find the bathing suits. With a headshake, Kelly picked the suitcase up and dragged it over to the bed. In a few moments, she hesitantly poked around in a try not to disturb Carrie’s tidy packing job. She had watched Carrie pack for a bit; the girl had been very specific about where everything went.
Kelly had felt awkward then too, watching Carrie pack, so she had distracted herself with a book. Now, she wished she had paid attention since it looked like she might have to repack the damn case. “We couldn’t just be making out in the kitchen, could we? No.” Kelly rolled her eyes and finally just started to pull out Carrie’s clothes and keep them in their neat, little groupings as best as she could. “This is mom’s fault somehow, I just don’t know how yet.” Kelly took a deep breath and reminded herself that it had only been two days. The rest of their vacation had been spent alone, just like how she and Carrie had both wanted.
As Kelly pulled out the last of the clothes, she realized that she would have to go through Carrie’s more intimate clothes since she hadn’t found the suits yet. “Crap.” She wondered what the hell was taking Carrie so long. How long did it take to wrap a dish anyway? Kelly stalled for a few moments and straightened up the pile of clothes she had created on the bed before she just unzipped the bag that she had tried to avoid. She reasoned to herself that it wasn’t like she hadn’t ever seen the undergarments, usually though, Carrie was wearing them. Kelly frowned when she found a package of gloves.
“She forgets to pack enough cool shirts, but she brings gloves?” Kelly shook her head and tried not to think about why Carrie would have brought gloves. She knew Carrie was a natural blonde, but she also knew that Carrie lightened her hair. “It would be Carrie that wouldn’t trust her hair to anyone new, even if it was just for a week.” Kelly tossed the package of gloves onto the growing stack of Carrie’s belongings and went back to her search.
She had just added a number of colorful bras to the pile when she stopped and blinked a few times to make sure that she wasn’t imagining things. Kelly stifled a giggle, but she couldn’t make her cheeks go back to their normal color. She glanced back at the pile of belongings that she had tossed the gloves onto, and then she looked back at roll of saran wrap. It took her a second, but when Kelly got over her initial amusement, she blushed even harder and took a step away from the bed.
Kelly swallowed twice and tried to slow her thoughts down. She couldn’t think with all the different directions her mind wanted to go in; how was she supposed to know what to think after finding what she had found? Carrie had told her to look for the suits, so had Carrie meant for her to find the items? The swimming suggestion had come seemingly from out of nowhere. Kelly wondered if Carrie had been trying to let her know that the younger girl was ready to be together. She knew Carrie had trouble expressing feelings when it came to new aspects of their relationship.
On the other hand, Kelly wondered if maybe Carrie had a few ocd’s like herself. For all she knew, Carrie might actually think that she wouldn’t have had saran wrap. The other girl had teased her enough times about the grocery situation she had going on in her kitchen. With her luck, it was the second option. She shuddered at the thought of bringing up the subject of sex only to find out that she was wrong. Kelly pushed aside her thoughts and went back to looking for the swimsuits. Carrie had asked her to get the suits, so that’s what she would do… even if she had to ignore every single errant thought that crossed her mind.
It only took a minute to find the suits that Carrie had mentioned now that she was looking in the right spot, but Kelly still couldn’t forget about her thoughts. She really wanted to know why Carrie had stuff for them to have safe sex with. How did Carrie even know what the things were used for anyway? Carrie had to know; otherwise the blonde wouldn’t have had them. No one just carried around gloves and saran wrap. Kelly began to repack the suitcase. She didn’t know what she was supposed to say. If Carrie could think to bring protection for them, then sex had to be on Carrie’s mind too. Kelly knew she wasn’t the only one who got frustrated when they were interrupted, even if sometimes it was her or Carrie that stopped things from going too far.
Carrie jogged up the last few steps of the staircase; glad to be on her way and that much closer to swimming with Kelly. She had thought that she was taking too long, and had half expected Kelly to pop out of nowhere and tease her for taking so long, but she assumed that the brunette had needed time to find a swimsuit. Carrie eagerly strolled into the bedroom, although she stopped when she saw Kelly. She took in the sight of her girlfriend in a light print bikini and tried to think about anything to get her brain to cooperate and look away from Kelly. She guessed that she was wrong about Kelly still changing. Carrie stared at Kelly’s form for another few seconds until her mind decided to work with her.
Of course, she couldn’t help it when her eyes wandered over Kelly’s curves, or when Kelly absently pushed up the thin strap of the bikini top. After she had watched Kelly fidget with the bikini top a few times while handling her clothes, Carrie sneaked up behind Kelly quietly. She couldn’t stand around watching Kelly all day. Besides, swimming with Kelly meant that she could be that much closer to the older girl instead of just watching.
Carrie wrapped her arms around Kelly and pressed a quick kiss to the side of Kelly’s neck. “You look…” Carrie let her words trail to a soft end; her brain wasn’t on her side, and neither were her arms and lips apparently. As she tried to think of something to say that wouldn’t sound like a line, she noticed that Kelly had gone through her entire suitcase. Carrie froze when she realized that Kelly had to have searched through everything to find her suits.
Kelly hadn’t heard Carrie come into the room, but once she had felt Carrie’s arms around her, she had decided that Carrie knew what she had found, and had probably meant for her to do so. “So I think you forgot something that you needed downstairs.” Kelly tossed the wrap in the suitcase and turned around without dislodging Carrie’s arms. “Are you going to clean my kitchen with all this too?” She smiled playfully while she hugged Carrie around the waist. She could be lighthearted about the subject, joking around always worked with Carrie.
Carrie was sure that her brain just needed enough time to begin to work again; and that it was impossible to die of embarrassment. Carrie coughed lightly and untangled herself from Kelly, so that she could move away. She did not want Kelly to see how red her cheeks were. “I, uh, no, I wasn’t planning on cleaning the kitchen. I was just,” Carrie frowned and looked over at her suitcase; she wanted to throw the thing out the window. “What I meant was that I had those so that, um…” She still couldn’t think of the right thing to say. It was one thing for her to pack stuff just in case they decided to take things to the next level during the trip; it was something completely different for Kelly to find those things. “I just wanted to be prepared?”
The slightly hopeful, though thoroughly confused, tone of Carrie’s voice was sweet enough to make Kelly smile; it was the fire engine red cheeks and wide eyes that made the image less endearing, and more worrying. Kelly was sure that she could safely say now that Carrie hadn’t meant for her to find anything, but Carrie wasn’t denying anything, so she was going to see the topic through. “You’re so having a teenage boy moment. What with all the stuttering and the nervous looks between me and the suitcase.”
Carrie really wished that her brain would get with the program. She needed to fall back on their familiar banter, however, so far her brain was still caught between being turned on and mortified that Kelly had seen what she had packed. “I am not a teenage boy. I just wanted to be prepared.” She managed to look at Kelly’s face this time when she looked away from the bed, almost immediately though she looked back at the bed. It didn’t help to see that Kelly wasn’t having the same issues that she had. “I’m not! I just wanted to be prepared!”
Kelly would have raised an eyebrow at the vehemence of Carrie’s tone, if she hadn’t begun to realize that Carrie wasn’t joking with her. Kelly quickly tried to go back over what she knew in her head, as fast as she could, because she had a feeling she had just made a big mistake. A good, long look at Carrie’s flaming cheeks were all that she needed to convince herself that no amount of joking would make the subject go away. Kelly tried to walk over casually to Carrie. “You’re right, I was just trying to keep things light.” She stopped a foot away from Carrie and tried to make eye contact with the blonde. “I think it’s sweet. I didn’t even know that you were thinking about…”
Carrie felt better when Kelly didn’t finish the sentence; like she wasn’t the only one who was embarrassed. It wasn’t even that she felt weird talking about sex with Kelly, it was that the topic had come up unexpectedly. Carrie stuffed her hands in her pockets and looked in Kelly’s general direction. “I don’t know if it was sweet. I just wanted to be ready.”
Kelly had to bite the inside of her cheek so that she didn’t smile hugely when Carrie stopped for second and looked at her. The look on Carrie’s face could only be described as a puppy dog expression. Kelly wanted to reach out to hug and kiss Carrie, but she restrained herself. “You’re sweet.” So, she had been wrong about Carrie wanting her to find the stuff, but she wasn’t wrong about the fact that Carrie had thought about them. Kelly reached out and pulled one of Carrie’s hands out of the pockets so that she could hold it with one of her fingers.
“I wanted to be prepared in case we decided that we were going to be together. We never got around to talking about it though, so I,” Carrie ducked her head to look down at her feet. Kelly’s expression made her less nervous; unfortunately, the brunette’s smile made her think about the sight she had walked in on when she had first entered the room. “I didn’t know what you were thinking though, so I wasn’t going to bring it up unless you did.”
Kelly thought over Carrie’s explanation, still aware enough to realize the moment Carrie held her hand properly. She hadn’t really thought about what it would be like when they got around to the sex talk, it kind of made her feel off kilter that Carrie was coming around so quickly. She had been kidding when she had made the teenage boy crack. “We can talk about it now. I’m sure that you’ve got questions.” Kelly couldn’t even begin to process her thoughts when Carrie quickly looked her in the eyes. “I know it’s your first time. We can talk about it as much as you want.”
Carrie knew she didn’t have to worry about the shade of her cheeks any longer. If anything, she thought that her cheeks might be white. “No. No. I totally have had sex.” She held onto Kelly’s hand with a tighter grip; the idea that Kelly thought she didn’t know anything vaguely terrified her. “Lots of really good- what I mean is that I would know what I’m doing. I know how girls work.” Carrie stopped just short of nodding her head, although she would nod if it would convince Kelly.
Kelly wanted to laugh at the nervous babble that she had just been party to; glad that for once, it wasn’t her that couldn’t control her mouth. Carrie started to go on again though, so she couldn’t get a word in to reassure the other girl. It didn’t help that she loved it when Carrie acted all dorky and so fact conscious.
“So I mean, it’s not like all girls are different, I just think that I would know since I know what I like.” Carrie had more reasons to tell Kelly, but she stopped when Kelly giggled. She really didn’t know what was so funny. Did it really matter if most of her knowledge was based off herself?
Before Carrie could start up again, Kelly interrupted. “I know it’s not your first time ever, Carrie. I meant with a girl. I kinda assumed that you weren’t a virgin when you got so pissed about Mr. Quarterback.” Kelly would have patted herself on the back for mentioning Tony without mentioning him by name. Actually, she wouldn’t have patted herself on the back, but if her friends had been around, she knew they would have been impressed with her smooth move.
Carrie felt marginally mollified by Kelly’s explanation, and slightly relieved that her girlfriend hadn’t been making fun of her lack of experience with girls. “I’d totally be good. I know stuff.” Carrie managed to smile as she slipped her arm around Kelly’s waist. The amused look on Kelly’s face made her want to grin, however she refrained from smirking. She knew she was the one in their relationship who lacked the practical applications, but that didn’t mean that she couldn’t feel confident. “I walked in on two girls, several times.”
Kelly stared at Carrie blankly, confused by the reference. She failed to see how that actually gave Carrie any actual knowledge, maybe some images, but not really… “Why do I have a feeling this has to do with one of your softball teammates? It always has to do with you seeing girls going at it when you talk about softball.” Kelly recovered quickly and just smiled for Carrie’s benefit. Hopefully, Carrie would take her words as a joke. She was not about to upset whatever confidence she had managed to give back after surprising Carrie with their current topic.
“That’s not-” Carrie shut her mouth before one of Kelly’s inexplicable thoughts could distract her. “One of my friends had a habit of forgetting about plans with people if her girlfriend walked into the room. I saw them going at it more times than I’d like to admit.” Carrie had to chuckle at the memories. She hadn’t been the only team member that it had happened to, so her friend had been teased by the entire team whenever the girlfriend would show up to their games, not that she was about to tell Kelly that during their conversation. They would end up talking about some song Kelly had heard, or something else completely unrelated. “I looked stuff up, too.” Carrie glanced back at the bed. “Obviously.”
Kelly would have bet that she could get through the conversation without laughing, just because she knew how important it was, but she laughed hard imagining some poor girl who forgot about everything the minute her girlfriend showed up. It also hadn’t helped any that Carrie had spoken so matter of factly again. “Obviously.” Kelly turned away since she couldn’t stop giggling.
Carrie was irked that Kelly had pulled away to giggle at her, mostly because she had just noticed what Kelly was wearing again. “Hey.” Carrie sighed when she realized that Kelly was going to laugh for a while, which would only put off their swimming even longer. She couldn’t even enjoy staring at Kelly in the swimsuit. Carrie walked to the bed and grabbed her bikini; determined that she was not going to let either of the situations get to her. “It’s not like I had a ton of notice for this trip anyway. I worked with what I had. I can’t drop by places that sell dental dams without any notice.”
Kelly took quick, deep breaths so that she could hold her laughter in until Carrie had walked into the bathroom, but she couldn’t. “I’m sorry.” She tried to apologize again, although she couldn’t get the words out. She giggled every time she pictured Carrie trying to go into an adult store to buy dental dams. Only the fact that she was laughing so hard kept her from asking why Carrie hadn’t made Matt go for her. Kelly pressed her lips together when she noticed Carrie pause in the doorway of the bathroom. “I’m sorry, Care. You know I would never laugh about-”
Carrie wasn’t upset, she was only irritated, she’d be over the conversation in a few minutes. “I know, and it’s fine. It was kind of funny. You know what’s even funnier?” Carrie snickered when Kelly asked what, so she held up bikini so Kelly could see. “It’s going to be funny watching you trying to control yourself when we’re swimming.” Kelly had the experience with girls, but Carrie knew how to flirt. She didn’t have to have a degree in girls to work flirting to her advantage.
Kelly pouted at the announcement, though she knew Carrie was just teasing her. “I make no such promise. I don’t care if anyone comes up to us or not.” She glanced at the bikini, and then back up at Carrie. “Hell, I’ll call Jason now and tell him to lock mom up so she can’t interrupt us, cuz there’s no way that’s happening if you’re wearing that.”
Carrie walked back over to her pouting girlfriend and gave Kelly a quick kiss. She smiled to herself because it didn’t matter what might have happened in the past, she was the one who made Kelly smile so brightly. “I love your suit too.” Carrie stared into Kelly’s eyes for a moment longer and brushed her hand over Kelly’s hip before she turned to walk away.
“Was that a yes to me calling?” Kelly grinned as Carrie shut the door to the bathroom, only because she could hear Carrie laughing. She felt a little bad for being unable to control her laughter, but she loved that they could laugh while talking about something serious. Kelly went back to Carrie’s suitcase, to make sure that she had put everything away, and promised herself that after the dinner she would bring the topic up again so they could have a longer conversation.
