Life Goes On(Pt22)
Hours later after taking care of paperwork for the hospital and making arrangements for Vivian’s body. The exhausted group returned to the house. The younger ones went to bed to try and rest. Kelsey curled up in the overstuffed chair, hugging herself. Her face was drawn and the tears started to fall again. Rick saw her crying again. He went over and made her scoot over so he could sit in the chair with her. Kelsey went willingly into his arm.
“Shhh….it’s going to be alright. You may not think that now, but it will.”
Phil tucked a blanket around her, leaning down, he kiss the top of her head. “If you need anything Kelsey…” then sat on the sofa.
Kelsey wiped her face. “I know…just ask.” She settled against Rick’s warm body. “Rick how…it’ll get easier wont it?”
”Yes it does.”
”Was it hard at first?”
”We expected Brenda to past on. Don’t get me wrong, it was hard in the beginning. I missed her terribly. I still do. The first few months will be the hardest. But keep in mind the support group you have around you.”
“I know. All I have to do is scream help and you guys will come out of the wood work.”
“Or the sky.” Joe joked.
“That too.” She said glancing at Joe, a small smile touched her lips.
“Kelsey take these.” Nick came over. “They’re a mild sedative and will help you sleep.”
Kelsey looked up at him. As much as she hated Nick right now, she could see that he was hurting just like the rest of them. Even his eyes were slightly puffy and red. Taking the small pills and glass of water from him, she tossed them in her mouth followed by water. She settled back into Rick. The silence in the room stretched out, everyone in their own thoughts.
“He was sick and didn’t want to tell any of you.” She finally said.
“I kind have picked up on that when he got here. I wanted to question him about it, but never did.” Joe told them.
“What was wrong with him Kelsey? That he couldn’t come to us.”
“Not sure really. The doctor’s ran all kinds of tests after his mild stroke last year.
“Mild stroke. He didn’t tell us anything about that.” Mal looked around.
“He wouldn’t. Didn’t want any of you to worry. It was only recently that they found the blood clot in his heart. Medication, diet and restricted activities came next.”
“How long ago was this?” Phil asked.
“Few months maybe.” Kelsey yawned and closed her eyes.
“I was hoping that he had changed his mind about coming across.” Joe told them. “I couldn’t help but ask.”
“I wanted him to say yes.” Mal putting his thoughts out.
“But we all knew he was against it, over the years. He didn’t want that kind of lifestyle.”
“But still….”
Nick’s angry voice filtered into the room.
“What the hell is he pissed about now?” Mal grumbled.
“He’s making the rest of the arrangements to have Vivian’s body flown to Ireland for burial. Mechanical problems with one of the planes.”
”Even in a time like this, he has to be in control.” Kelsey mumbled.
Sav got up and went over to her. “Kels lets go to bed.”
“Ok.”
Sav scooped her up in his arms and effortlessly carried her upstairs to the room she had shared with Vivian.
“No…not in there.”
Sav changed direction and went to his room. He sat her on the bed and went back to pick out a nightgown for her. Sav turned his head, staring at the floor as she changed and slid under the blankets.
“Stay with me until I go to sleep.”
Sav eased down on the edge of the bed, stroking her hair. “I’m sorry Kels.”
“Just remember what he said to you. It was not your fault.” She said that with as much force as she could in her sleepy state. To help Sav get over the guilt she knew he had. Sav remained with her until she was sleeping peacefully. He didn’t want to go back and join the others. Spying his guitar in the corner he picked it up and left out the back of the house.
The others finally wondered upstairs to try and get some sleep. Nick had slammed the study door, locking himself in. Nobody seemed to care and didn’t bother him. Joe kissed Evelyn goodnight, then went to look for Sav. It was early morning and the sun would be coming up soon and he wasn’t in the house.
Walking around the grounds, Joe saw his silhouette on the beach. Joe heard him crying softly before he even got to him. Sitting on the sand behind him, Joe spread his legs out on either side of him. Then drawing him closer with his arms around his waist. Joe rocked gently back and forth until he had calmed down. Sav leaned his head back on Joe’s shoulder and stared out over the ocean. Joe brushed his hair back, kissing his cheek.
Sav broke the silence. “He knew.”
“He knew what?”
“Nick he knew about…” Sav was hoping that he would never have to tell Joe how he felt about Amber. Thinking once again that this could be the one thing that Joe couldn’t forgive him for. Therefore ending their relationship. Bracing himself for Joe’s anger he plunged ahead. “How I feel about Amber.”
“Of course he did. Everybody knows you love Amber like your own daughter. Cared for her…hell you practically helped Rebecca and I raise her. That’s why you are her favorite uncle.”
“It was more…still is more than that.”
Joe waited for him to continue. ”And.”
“Do you remember last week when I said….shit…” Sav wanted to get up and Joe pulled him back against him, tightening is hold.
“You said you were leaving. That you couldn’t stay here. Why?”
Sav nervously twisted the matching ring on his finger. “I’m able to hide things from you. This is one that I have hidden for awhile.” He stopped again knowing his next words could end everything.
“Go on.” Joe prompted.
“I’m in love with Amber.” Sav waited for the emptiness behind him, waited for it in his mind. Waited for Joe’s anger from his confession. It never came.
“This woman you spoke of. The one that was already taken. It was Amber you were talking about. The one you want to be with, settled down with.”
“Yes.”
Joe shifted behind him, withdrew his arms to rest his hands on Sav’s hips. He was quiet for the longest time. Taking in what Sav meant. He scooted away from him, staring off in the distance. “How long.”
“I don’t know…six, seven years maybe.”
”That’s a long time to keep something like this from me. What has happened to our no keeping secrets from each other?”
“This was never meant to come out. Nick knew of my feelings some time ago.”
”How is it that he knew and I didn’t?”
“I don’t know. I didn’t tell or show him anything when he. …that’s why he reacted the way he did tonight. He saw us, just like everybody else. We were leaving the ball to be….together.”
“You have never slept with her?”
Sav spun around to face Joe. “Never. Just the blood kiss and…and last week.”
“Last week.” Joe asked with concern.
“We…we met over there…” he pointed to the underbrush. “…we…I came so close to…to making love to her Joe.”
“You mean you didn’t?”
”No…I couldn’t…. wanted to very badly….I pushed her away before it went to far. I thought about you and how our feelings for one another, how you would react. I told Amber that I loved her very much, but couldn’t risk losing you if we let it go any further.”
“That’s why you were going to leave. Hoping that it would just fade away. Sav, Amber is my daughter….sleeping with her would be just like sleeping with your own daughter.”
Sav could hear the touch of anger in Joe’s voice. “I know.” He looked at Joe and reached out to touch his cheek. Joe pulled away. This is what he had feared. What he knew would happen. He could take anything that life threw at him, but not Joe’s rejection.
Joe felt the impact from Sav as he pulled away from his touch. Without another word Joe stood up and walked back to the house.
Sav stayed on the beach, his whole world falling down around him and there was nothing he could do to stop it. ‘I should have left. Vivian would still be here and I would still have Joe….he hates me this time.’ Sav fell back to lie in the cool sand. He brought his knee up and covered his eyes with his arm.
