Three weeks of persuasion can do a lot. Worthington had found this to his advantage. He knew Georgiana’s craving for calm and relief would overwhelm her common sense. She was tired, desperate, lonely and her only human contact was him. Her demeanour had changed towards him, she cried quite often, asking to go home, begging at points and that’s when he played his ace card. He had a way to get her home, an idea.
“Anything!” Georgiana pleaded, swallowing down her tablets.
“I can take you home.” He said, that was all. She sobbed into her hands and nodded, with Colin abandoning her and having nothing but four walls to stare at, she could see no other way out.
“What do I have to do? “
“Well, here’s the plan. Do tell me if you are not happy with any of it. We tell the headmaster that we are to be married. He will release you, as long as you leave with me and I can take you back home to your uncle and we will say nothing more of what has happened.”
“Really?” But what if the headmaster doesn’t believe us, he might realise what we are doing.”
“That is why, my sweet lady that we need to have our sham wedding here. As soon as it is over I can get your uncle to arrange having it all annulled. After all, we will not be consummating the marriage so I am quite sure there will be no problems in that. “Worthington assured her, noticing the look of relief that came over her face at the ‘not consummating’ part.
Georgiana’s mind wandered, it sounded so farfetched and she couldn’t concentrate on the finer points of any of it. A fake wedding, a quick escape, it all sounded too easy. The part about not consummating pleased her, the thought of getting that close to Worthington still repulsed her more than she could put into words. But anything would be worth a try, especially if it bought her home, home to her uncle. She took a deep breath and gave her answer.
Colin looked up in an annoyed fashion as his door burst open and Worthington sauntered through with a large grin across his face.
“What? I’m very busy!” He snapped as Worthington slid an envelope across the desk.
“Read it!” He smiled, standing back to watch the response. Colin sighed and closed his laptop, opening the envelope he pulled out a small lilac piece of paper decorated with bells and champagne glasses.
“Is this some sort of joke?” He frowned.
“No, completely real, so can I take your rsvp now or later?” Worthington grinned. Colin reread it in case he was going mad, a feeling that he encountered quite often lately.
“A wedding invitation...between you and Georgiana....what the hell is this about?”
“Quite simply. Lady Alderley Grant has kindly accepted my hand in marriage and what other venue than the academy for our happy occasion, as we wanted it to be as soon as possible.” Worthington grinned. His joy was short lived as Colin leapt up from his seat, the laptop flying across the desk as he pinned Worthington to the floor.
“She would never marry you, what have you done to her?”
“Nothing, maybe it’s what you have done to her, you should go think on that! “ He gasped, Colin’s grip tightening around his neck. It was quickly released as Colin’s common sense returned. Murdering Worthington wouldn’t make any of this go away, however satisfying it may feel. He screwed the paper up tight in annoyance and threw it to the corner of the room. Worthington jumped up, taking a few moments to get his breath back.
“Watch yourself; I wouldn’t advise standing in my way this time!” He warned, croakily, holding his throat. Colin opened the door in an indication that he wanted him to leave. Worthington sauntered through, still rubbing his throat. Slamming the door behind him Colin stood against it, his head back, how had this all got this far. He had been trying to pay off his debts by getting this job and that was all it had been, a job, until she had come along. How ridiculous that he had gone so far for her and she did not even know it. The only chance left was to make her see what was happening and take her home himself, at least then this nightmare could end.
Four weeks later he stood outside the door, composing himself. He had not seen her for weeks and now under these circumstances what on earth would be the right way to approach her. After a few moments of deliberating he gave in and knocked the door before pushing it slowly open. A Thin, pale white girl turned to glance at him from her seat at the mirror. She wore a beautiful shimmering pearlescent gown of silver and green with a bodice that laced her up perfectly yet showed how painfully thin she had become. She wore a sparkling tiara and small veil that trailed down the back of her head over her cropped hair. It had been cut short, giving her an elven look. Her eyes were dull and half closed as she hummed to herself and nodded every so often as if falling asleep. She did not say anything but turned back to the mirror, lost in her own world.“Georgiana!”
She turned back to focus on him as much as she could.
“Hello.”
“Georgiana, it’s me, please listen we don’t have much time. You have to come with me; I have people waiting at the docks to take us back to the mainland, back home to your uncle.” He urged, stepping forwards to stand beside her at the mirror.
“I can’t, I’m getting married. Nice day for it too...” She slurred in a giggly fashion before going back to humming. Colin sighed, realising she wasn’t even recognising him.
“Georgiana, please, you can’t marry him!”
“Why not? It’s not real, I’m going home. I just want to....go home.” She replied, her head nodding again. Colin sighed, wondering how to get through to her in this state. There was something terribly wrong with her; this was not the same girl he had left in the tower. He had one last option that might get through to her and put his arm gently on her shoulder.
“I’m going to leave you alone Georgiana. I understand you have made your choice.” He said softly in her ear. “But I have a wedding gift for you, so may I give that to you before I leave?”
“Yes” She croaked, blinking to keep her eyes focussed.
He moved around behind her and took a small box from his pocket. Removing something from it he moved round to hang a chain around her neck. She sat still as he fastened it at the back. She looked down.
“That’s pretty!”She gasped as if seeing it for the first time. Her fingers moved across the cool metal, the feel of it triggering a memory. She ran a finger up round to the catch, the hairs rising on the back of her neck. . A single tear ran down her cheek. “Oh my god....” The necklace he had given her, which she had angrily returned when she thought he had left her forever. Now she had thought exactly the same thing he had bought it back to her.
She turned to look at him, standing up, wobbling unsteadily on her feet. Her eyes brimmed with tears as she moved closer to him so that they were almost touching, and swiftly slapped him across the face. He recoiled and stood back, holding his hand to his cheek.
“What was that for?”
“For leaving me and not coming back, for promising you were going to take me home, for not coming back and leaving him to....to...”
He pulled her close, even though she was punching out at him and she sobbed hard into his chest. He held her so close that her tears were soaking through; he kept her close until she calmed down and stopped fighting against him.
“What did he do to you?” He said finally, not wanting to know but yet knowing he had to hear the words. She sat back in the chair, wiping the mascara stains from her eyes, shaking her head.
“I don’t want to talk about it.” She looked away, her hand nervously at her lips.
“Well I do, I need to know what he has done to you, you were so headstrong, positive, a completely different person. Now you are a nervous wreck under the influence of something, god knows what....was it the headmaster, what has he done? Did he force you into this marriage?” He put a hand gently on her knee and she jumped at the sudden contact.
“No!” She sighed, her hands fiddling with her necklace again; she was becoming anxious, as she always did when her medication needed topping up. Her brain started thinking about things, her mind began to wander.
“What happened, the morning when I woke up and you were not beside me, was that him, what did he do to you. I know something has changed!”
Georgiana took a deep breath, shaking and sobbing fat black mascara tears streamed down into inky stains on her dress.
“He... he raped me the day after. He dragged me back to my room by my neck and just did it, and he hurt me and he wouldn’t stop....and I couldn’t stop him and you weren’t there to save me.” She continued, crying. “I thought he was going to kill me, he had a pair of scissors at my throat. That was when he enjoyed terrifying me and cut off all my hair.” She stopped; gasping for breath at the fast pace the words had flown from her mouth.
Colin closed his eyes for a moment; those were the words he had been hoping not to hear. That was why she flinched at his touch and had closed herself away into this fearful, hurt little girl.
“Georgiana, please listen to me, he knew what was going on, he made me leave. I have tried so hard to get back up to that tower but I couldn’t.”
“Well you didn’t try hard enough; at least Worthington is actually getting me out.” She hissed through her teeth angrily.
“So you trust the word of a man who has already played mind games with you. He was the reason you ended up in the tower in the first place!”
“He helped me, bought me pills to make it go away, it all went away!” She shouted.
“Pills, pills that numb your mind and let him get away with brainwashing you!” Colin shouted back, just as loudly. His infuriation seeping through.
“I loved you so much, you made me think that you meant every word you said, and then I saw you with her!” She cried the hurt showing through with her anger.
“Who?” He looked confused; wondering if this was another delirious moment.
“The girl at the fountain.”
“Fountain? What are you on about?”
“I looked out of my window in that tower and you were both sat there on the edge of the fountain, you had your arm around her. Looking all cosy while I was up there all alone and waiting for you to come back! I sat up there waiting and believing you were going to come back and you never did.” She shouted her voice crackling at the end.
“The only girl you may have seen me with was a student I was lending support to after her father died. For god’s sake Georgiana, I love you, why the hell would I do something like that to you?” He explained, holding onto her hands tightly.
Georgiana pulled away from him, she felt so confused.
“So you tried?”
“Yes I tried, I tried with every part of me to get back in to see you but I couldn’t. Now please just come with me, we haven’t got much time. If we can get to the docks your m...” He was abruptly interrupted at that point as Worthington burst into the room.
“What are you doing here?” He roared at Colin.
“I don’t want to marry you anymore. I’ve changed my mind.” Georgiana said defiantly, staring him straight in the face. “Colin is going to take me back home so I don’t need to marry you.” She held onto Colin’s hand for reassurance and he held an arm protectively around her back.
“You clearly need your medication for the day. You sound delirious!” He snorted, shoving two pills in her mouth and holding his hand over her mouth until she swallowed. His movement was so swift that Colin had not time to stop the whole process. She wobbled on her heels and he found himself supporting her whole weight as she fell backwards. Colin looked on in despair as she sank into the chair with a dazed contented look on her face.In a moment her eyes were closed, her eyelashes flickered gently and she gave a low sigh as she fell into sleep.
“Get out, now! And try not to think too much about how i will be hurting this little lady on our wedding night!” Worthington threatened. He shoved Colin back though the door and followed on, locking it behind him. “Shall I let you in on a little secret, after the wedding when we get back to Alderley house, I shall await the sad passing of my master. Then I shall be locking that stupid little witch away, so I can enjoy the perks of being lord of my own manor while she can just service me for my own desires when needed. After that, well I shall just deal with her the same way I dealt with her mother, there is only one thing that girl is good for as I am sure you know!”
It was more than Colin could take, he launched himself onto Worthington as they rolled around on the floor, he had the upper hand of being quicker than the stout Worthington and rained down punches on his chest until he was pulled backwards by two security guards. Worthington stood himself up, straightening his shirt and wiping the blood from his nose with a tissue.
“Please leave quietly, I have a wedding to attend and I do not want you disturbing my future wife any longer!” He said as he turned to walk away.
“Future wife? Only because you drugged her up so much she doesn’t even know what day it is!” Colin shouted after him.”You’re not her fiancé just her bloody dealer! “He added as Worthington disappeared from view.
Colin calmed himself down and the guards released their grip before escorting him to the main doors of the academy. With only a few hours before the ceremony began, he did not have much time to work on a plan B for the situation.
