Winds of Destiny(Pt22)
Thanks for reading.
Sav wiggled in his sleep, stretching his arm across the bed to feel the emptiness. He raised his up head to look around the room for Joe. He was sitting on the bench seat beside the oblong porthole, arms wrapped around his knees.
“What are you thinking about?” Sav asked rolling to his side.
“A lot of things.” Joe softly replied.
Sav watched him a few minutes then sat up, pulling the sheet from the bed he wrapped it around his shoulder and made his way over to him. He sat in front of him, studying his face in the dim light. “I can’t help you if you don’t let me in Joe.” He finally asked after probing his mind and getting stopped by a barrier.
“I have to sort out a few things first, get them straight.”
“Ok, I’ll wait until you are ready to talk about it.”
Joe smiled and looked out the port hole.
Sav did the same and frowned. “Hey, we’re moving.”
“Yeah, have been for a couple of hours.” Joe stated. “Guess we have Nick to thank for leaving sooner.”
“Why do you say that?”
“It’s his way of helping…us.”
“Oh.”
“You don’t sound to enthusiastic about it or is it because I’m still here?”
“No…I do want you here.”
Leaning over, Joe kissed him softly on the lips. “I can’t think of a better place to be.”
Sav peered out the porthole again, looking forward then back. The greenish hue of water looked relatively calm, the sun glistening on the gentle swells. “Looks to be mid-day.” Leaning back against the seat, his eyes remained transfixed out the window. “It doesn’t change the distance between us, what...what happened last night...I felt alive again...I missed that...I miss us.”
A small smile touched Joe’s lips thinking of how they had spent the last ten hours, his body also felt every minute. Sav was right in one aspect, he also felt alive again, first time in over a year. However brief it will be for him, remains to be seen. Sav’s soft voice broke through his troubled thoughts.
“You look tired. Want to talk about your dreams now?”
A shake of his head was the reply.
“OK, I know you will tell me about them when you are ready.”
“Can I ask you something?”
“Sure.”
“You always say you would, but would you really die for Thomas or Amber?”
“Why would you ask me something like that?” Sav replied in an even tone.
“I never have before and I was just wondering.” Joe watched the play of anger sweep across his face.
Sav stared at him in disbelief, then bolted to his feet. “I can’t believe you fucking ask me that.” Leaving him sitting there to make his way to the bathroom, tripping on the sheet that got wrapped around his feet.
Joe turned his gaze back to the porthole waiting for him to come back out. When he did, Sav was zipping up his jeans.
“Why are you getting mad about that question? I often wonder if you really would and just want to know.”
“I’m not going to answer it, because you already know. I don’t understand what happened to you Joe. You’ve turned into a bitter, hateful person. You’re the cream de la cream of ultimate asshole and I don’t like you right now.” Heading to the door he yanked it open. “Get out.”
Taking a deep breath, Joe swung his legs to the floor and stood up to walk toward him. “Where should I go?”
“I don’t care where you go, just get away from me.”
Taking another step forward, Joe grabbed the door to pull it from Sav’s tight grip so he could close it. “That will be kinda hard on this boat since we are moving, and we’re miles out to sea.”
“Then you can fly or swim. Swimming would work, that way the sharks will eat you, but that wouldn’t work either, because you would leave a bitter taste in their mouth.”
“You’re funny when you are mad.” Joe chuckled. “And extremely sexy.”
Sav rolled his eyes. “I’m too pissed to be funny or sexy.”
“I love your mood swings too. What are you mad about?”
Sav threw his hands up. “Would I really die for Amber and Thomas? Of course I would!! I came close..very close with both of them. I wouldn’t hesitate to die for you..Nick..or anybody in this family. What the hell do you think I’ve been doing all the…” Sav suddenly stopped his triad to glare at Joe. Jabbing his hands on his hips, he humph under his breath. “You did that on purpose.”
“Did what?”
“Asking me that stupid question, knowing it would get that kind of reaction.”
“oooh…it got a reaction all right in more ways then one.” Joe smiled mischievously. “Your mad…standing there in just your je…unbuttoned jeans, hair all wild from earlier, the tiniest glint of yellow in your eyes…I almost came in my boxer’s.”
Dropping his hands, Sav again rolled his eyes. “You’re incorrigible Joe.”
“No, just madly in love.” Joe crocked his finger, motioning for Sav to come closer.
“No.”
“Pleeease.” Joe whined.
“No.” Sav crossed his arms, standing his ground.
“Come on baby…please.”
“Why can’t you come over here?”
“I like to watch you walk.”
“Oh geez Joe, its three fucking steps!”
“I’m afraid to move, so you have to come over here.”
Crossing his arms again Sav said. “No, not until you apologize for asking me that.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Not good enough.”
“I’m sorry for that question.”
Sav shifted on his feet, quickly thinking of a way to get back at Joe for what he did. “Still not good enough.”
“I’m truly sorry for that question.”
“Better.” Sav replied nodding his head. “But you still have to convince me you mean it.”
“Anything…I’ll do anything.”
“Anything?”
“Yes.” Joe quickly shot back.
“Come over here.”
Without hesitation Joe did as he was told. “I know you would die for any of us, Rick. I’ve always known that.”
Sav gripped his chin. “Don’t ever forget that.”
“I never have.” Joe replied softly.
Releasing him, Sav dropped his hand to his jeans to slowly pull the zipper down, noticing that Joe’s breathing had picked up when he heard the metal against metal.
Joe dropped to his knees, running his hands over Sav’s jean clad butt and softly kissing his stomach in several places. Hooking his fingers in the waist band he pulled the jeans down his legs. Moaning softly in his throat, Joe ran his tongue over Sav’s protruding hip bone, then moving inward to the hair line, only to meet with air. Opening his eyes he watched him pulling his jeans back up.
“I’m taking shower…alone.”
“But…now…I thought you wanted me…”
“That was payback.” Sav replied and closed the door.
“You could have fucked my brains out for payback.” Joe stood up moving to the closed door.
“You would have enjoyed that to much.” Sav yelled.
“I would enjoy sucking you off too.” Joe called back and tried to go in, but the door was locked. “Can I come in?”
“No.” Came Sav’s muffled reply as the sound of water reached his ears.
“Oh you’re mean.” Joe frowned. Backing away from the door he went to the bed and flopped down on his stomach.
Sav came out a short time later, freshly showered, drying his hair. “That looks inviting.” He commented on Joe’s position on the bed.
“You’re invited.” Joe wiggling his butt.
Sav slowly crawled on the bed over him, leaning down he began to kiss his back, then trailing his tongue down his spine. Feeling him shiver, he went back up, lightly nipping across his shoulder.
“Enough of that.” Sav bounced over him to lay on his side of the bed.
Joe rose up to his elbows, golden eyes bright with desire. “And just what am I supposed to do about this?” He twisted so that Sav could see him.
“Hum….hump the bed.” Sav scooted down and pulled the sheet around his shoulders. “Goodnight Joe.”
“OK fine, I’ll jack off.” Joe flipped to his back and started stroking himself, moaning loudly. “Hey, let me suck your big toe while I do this.”
“Oh yuck…that’s gross!” Sav exclaimed, giving him a hardy shove.
Joe chuckled, rolling to his hand and knees he crawled the short distance to be over Sav. “It’s gross…what about when I fuck you in the ass or suck your dick?” He gently tugged on the sheet.
“um…well yeah, but...” Sav replied yanking the sheet away from him.
“Then why do we do it?” Joe pulled the sheet harder.
“…because it feels good.” Sav smiled up at him, pulling the sheet back over his chest, then shoved Joe to his side of the bed. “Now let me alone, I’m tired and want to sleep.”
Joe groaned as he started yanking and jerking the sheet to get under. Rolling to his side, he scooted closer to Sav and kissed him. “I’m really sorry about that stupid question.”
Sav pinched him in the side and got comfortable beside him. “Love you too.”

Thomas’ office at the Foundation Building.
His heart leaped to his throat as dread settle heavily in his stomach. Joe knew this was a dream, a dream he didn’t want to stay in. Closing his eyes tightly and shutting out the noises, he tried to claw his way out, feeling the smoke entwine around his body, holding him in this dream. Joe realized the smoke was not going to release him this time, it’s vise like grip was going to keep him until the end.
Willing his limps to move and his eyes open, Joe slowly moved around the room, until his gaze landed on Thomas’ legs sticking out from under the debris that had fallen on him, sending Joe to another jolting stop. He could barely make out the dark stains of blood dotting his pants and one shoe.
“Please don’t make me do this…” Joe started mumbling. “I have to wake up…why can’t I wake up from this horror?” Heartache once again constricted is chest, making it difficult to breath, even in his dream, a dream that felt so real. That all too familiar intense churning in his stomach gripped him, just as the sweat broke out on his forehead.
“I don’t want to do this..I have to wake up…”
“Thomas!”
Joe heard Sav yelling, turned toward his voice to see him struggling through the debris. His face marred by bruising, bleeding cuts contorted his face in pain as he tripped over electrical wires. He landed heavily on his stomach, jarring the piece of wood that was buried deep in his thigh. Joe could clearly see the blood saturation on the jeans, soaking into the material all the way to his foot. His eyes traveled upward to the small holes in his shirt, those too were bloody. He so badly wanted to help, but knew the dream wouldn’t let him.
With great effort, fighting his bodies natural vampire instincts to rest from the many wounds and blood loss. Sav got to his feet again. His voice strained, on the verge of breaking as he yelled again.
“Thomas Richard!…”
Thick smoke continued to billow around them, briefly obscuring his view of Sav making his way through the room, his movements quickened when he found him. Tossing the large pieces of ceiling and metal aside to reveal Thomas’ upper torso, a quick glimpse of his blood soaked shirt front.
Joe reeled away, stumbling over something behind him.“I don’t want to see this…!” He screamed to the room.
“But you must.” A soft voice rang in his mind. “You couldn’t stop my death, nor could Uncle Sav. My heart was scarcely beating, my life spilling to the floor, it was too late; the bullet did too much damage. I lost too much blood by the time he… He did try, just like he told you.”
“NO!…” Joe yelled, slapping his hands over his ears, but still heard his voice and saw everything unfold in front of him.
“You couldn’t always be there to pick me up and brush the dirt off or sooth the pain. That was all right with me, because I understood. In later years, when I found out about you and Uncle Sav…well, I’m sure you remember that.”
“Wake up…wake up…” Joe kept repeating. “I don’t want to do this!”
“Thomas…Tommy ….” Sav’s voice cut through Joe’s pleas of not wanting to be there. “…you have to…Tommy…please take it…”
“He was so focused on bringing me across, he didn’t realize I wouldn’t be able to swallow the life saving blood he was trying to give me. I was already de…”
“Shut up!” Joe sank to his knees beside them. Knowing he was trapped in this dream till the end, and tried to prepare himself for what he would see, he forced his eyes open. Thomas was tightly cradled in his arms, but the only blood that he saw was dripping from Sav’s arm.
“…please don’t go…Thomas….”
“He did try again, to bring me across. He took more then he lead you to believe.”
“We can’t take the blood of the dead.” Joe choked out.
“If he succeeded, given the amount that I had already lost. Uncle Sav would not have enough, his blood lose was...he didn’t have enough to bring me back...It wasn’t easy, but mom stopped him before he took more, going deeper in the vein of my arm. Uncle Sav would have died here.”
“Just as he almost did for your sister.”
“Yes.” Thomas gently stroked his father hair. “This is what he refused to share with you, didn’t want you to see in his blood. He knew you would try to find it and always stopped you before you could.”
“I lashed out at him because he wouldn’t, all the hateful things I said to him…and did.” Joe whispered. He stood up to watch Sav hobble from the smoke filled room.
“Uncle Sav did that to protect you.”
“W-Why?” Joe dropped his eyes back to the floor, staring at Thomas’ prone body.
“You were never suppose to learn of what happened in my office that day. After watching you falling deeper in despair, pushing everyone away, most importantly, pushing Sav away. We all decide too intervene, it was against the rules here, but we didn’t anyway. As you saw for yourself, you blamed him for something he didn’t do and had no control over.”
The air in the room suddenly shifted, causing the gray smoke to billow around them and obscuring his view of Thomas’ body. When it cleared, they were standing in the secret chamber of the Foundations building.
Sav stumbled to the sink, turning on the water, he was thankful the blast didn’t take out the pipes. Washing his shaking hands free of Thomas’ blood, then splashed cold water on his face. Gripping the edges of the vanity, his body began to shake.
“Why?”
Momentarily letting grief over take him and forgetting his own strength.
“Why?!”
Sav ripped the sink from the wall.
“WHY?!!”
With ease born of ten men, he threw it across the room. It shattered on the concrete wall, leaving a deep indention from the impact. Water from the broken pipes showered down on him as he sank to the floor.
“So why show this to me now?” Joe asked swallowing around the growing lump in his throat.
“It was time and to help you put my death in the past.”
“I..I never knew he…he never showed me this either...how badly he took your death.”
“Uncle Sav thought he failed me…failed you, but he didn’t.”
“I hurt him too much this time and it’s too late to try to get him back.”
“It’s never too late…destiny always finds a way.” Thomas replied.
Joe spun around to face him, his son, his youthful face and unmarred skin met his gaze, only now he wished his would never wake from his dream, knowing that Thomas would not be there when he did. Joe reached out to touch him and his fingers landed on his check, softly caressing it the same way he did when Thomas was a baby.
“I should have been…I’m sorry that I couldn’t be..” Joe’s voice broke, tears streamed down his face. “I miss you so much Tommy.”
“Don’t be sorry Dad, I know you couldn’t be there for me this time, Uncle Sav was.” Thomas mirrored his father’s soft touch to his face to wipe the tears away. “I wasn’t alone when the time came for me. I brought your love and strength with me.”
“Rick, he uh, he wouldn’t tell…”
“What were my last dying thoughts?” Thomas finished, Joe nodded his head. “Of how much I love you and Amber…my wife, children. How I knew you would take care of my family in the future.”
“And I will take care of them.” Joe tried to smile. “If only I..I could hold you o..one more time…”
Thomas smiled through his own tears. “I think I can manage that.” Wrapping his arms around his father, Thomas basked in the warmth he felt within his embrace, warmth he would cherish for a very long time in his world.
“Let him see, feel the peace within you now, as I do.” Thomas whispered in his ear, pulling back slightly, he kissed his cheek. “I love you dad.”
Joe tightened his arms around him, it felt so real to hold him and he never wanted to let go, but managed to talk around his sobs. “I love..you more…Tommy.”
Thomas pulled strength from the small group standing so close to them in the room and held on for a few more minutes. “I have to go now.”
“No…please not yet…” Joe begged.
Feeling more of his strength slowly draining, Thomas opened his eyes and stepped back from him. “I must go.”
“Wait…don’t go…” Joe called out as he faded into the mist before him, then sucked in his breath as Thomas’ love touched his heart.
Eyes fluttered open, slowly taking in the dim light from the porthole. Drawing in a deep breath, Joe could still feel Thomas’s arms around him, giving him comfort, letting the peace wash over his battered soul. In just those few moments of waking, Joe could feel the burden of anguish, numbing pain...anger leave him, as if washed out on the cool ocean breeze. Closing his eyes again, tears pricked again in as many days. Feeling the man beside him stir, Joe tightened his arms around him.
“I understand now, it wasn’t your fault. We are going to be OK now.” He whispered into the dark.

As sunrise approached on a new day, Obsession plowed through the deep waters of the Atlantic under full sail. Nick stood at the helm, humming softly to himself, thinking of the two men that slept below him. He felt the peacefulness hum through their bond from Joe. Nick pulled in a shaking breath as he looked out at the orange, blue hue of sunrise against the dark water line.
Now that they were heading on right path to a full reconciliation within their relationship, Nick could concentrate on other matters, but he knew there were a few more rough spots that needed to be taken care of, before they can put the past years behind them.
Travis came from below holding a steaming cup of coffee in his hand. “Good morning Nick.”
The smile still on his lips, he replied. “Good morning Travis. Did you sleep well?”
“Yes I did, thank you.” Travis frowned. “You’re in a cheerful mood this morning.”
“Yes I am.” Nick beamed. “It’s going to be a beautiful day for sailing.”
“How would you know, you will be a sleep.”
“Yes…yes…I know.” Nick stepped from behind the wheel and took a deep breath of the ocean air. “A glorious day indeed.”
Travis chuckled and glanced at the controls, making sure they were still on course. “Hum…Joe’s bag is still in the passageway. Getting an idea of what was going on behind the door…I didn’t want to disturb him last night to get it.”
Nick watched the gentle swells in the water. “He probably wouldn’t have answered the door if you knocked anyway. They are both sleeping, so I’ll take care of it.” He turned back to Travis, still smiling. “Well, I will see you this evening then.” Nick bounded down the steps.
Travis shook his head. “He is so weird.”
Nick grabbed a few bottles on his way and stopped in front of the door to the master cabin. Tucking one bottle under his arm, he picked up Joe’s back and quietly went in, closing the door softly behind him. He sat the bag in a chair, then stepped over the bed, staring down at the two men that lay there sleeping.
Joe lay on his side, one arm flung out across the bed, the other draped over Sav’s shoulder, who was also on his side facing Joe, his arms curled in front of him and his head tucked under Joe’s chin. Sav had once told him it was his favorite sleeping position with Joe, because he felt safe the way he would wrap himself around his body like that. Nick smiled again and leaned over to place a soft kiss on both of them.
“Peaceful dreams Joseph.” He whispered tucking Joe’s hair behind his ear.
Pulling a change of clothes from his drawer, Nick left them and went to the sail room to sleep for the day.
