“I just love your new haircut!” Roxi exclaimed, again, as she fussed with Natalie’s makeup. “I can’t believe you got it cut so short but it looks fabulous!”
“Thanks,” Natalie smiled, trying to maintain a perfect front while her stomach churned in sick anticipation. Any minute Hayden would be here waiting for his turn. She had arrived early so she could avoid him until it was no longer possible to hide but still her body trembled with barely repressed excitement at the thought of seeing him. Three weeks had not dampened her embarrassment at her lack of control that evening in Los Angeles. Lost in her misery, she hadn’t expected to have her limo door wrenched open and a determined, fierce Hayden rage in and yank her onto his lap. Her brain had refused to function and she’d reacted on pure, animal instinct. Her body had wanted his as much as her soul craved a completion it only seemed to find in him. Even now, the memory made her dig her nails into her palm to inflict a physical pain that masked the inner, raw sting no one else could see. Could he?
I love you. Natalie’s face flamed at the remembrance. They’d just had sex, not made love! She screamed at herself. How could I have been so pathetic!? The moment her mind replayed it she moved to squelch it, keep it from reminding her of what it had really been.
“Yes, I decided it was time for a change,” Natalie interjected, answering whatever the woman’s comment had been.
“Well, it’s very sexy!” Roxi enthused as she rimmed Natalie’s brown eyes with a seductive, dark kohl liner. “This whole look just exudes sex!”
“It…does?” Natalie blinked, her heart lurching.
“Oh, yes!” Roxi turned the make up chair towards the mirror. “Look at you!”
Natalie stared in horror at the sexy, sensual, tempting woman staring back at her. The new shorter bob hair style curled under, the sides curving towards her cheeks, the bangs wisping above her brows and drawing attention to the deep brown eyes sparkling with eager promise. Lips, brushed with berry color, pursed in what was a grimace, looked more like a come hither pout.
“Annie is going to love this!” Roxi examined her handiwork of turning Natalie into a desirable temptress. “All I can say is whoever prompted this transformation in you must really be one sexy devil!!”
A sound from the doorway choked Natalie’s heart to her throat and darted her eyes to the reflection in the mirror. A groan of utter wretchedness couldn’t squeeze past the huge lump as her eyes met the hooded, blue gaze.
“Well, well, it’s about time you showed up!” Roxi missed the whole undercurrent and playfully teased Hayden. “I was beginning to get worried! I’m ready to send Natalie to wardrobe and I’m all ready for you. How have you been?”
“Fine, Roxi,” Hayden’s eyes remained fixed on Natalie, the electric energy coursing through him flowing ofm inm in dark, kinetic waves. “Sorry I’m late. Hello, Natalie, how are you?”
As the low, mumbling words grated from him he leaned over and gave her a tiny, perfunctory peck on the cheek so he wouldn’t ruin her make up. Natalie’s heart plummeted as she felt the cold, but mannerly greeting and breathed in his unmistakable scent. Science said the sense of smell heightened memory. Natalie was a true believer. A thousand memories assaulted her mind and heart in speed of light succession, each and every one slicing through her uncaring façade, threatening to reveal the hunger in her eyes, the quivering of her lips.
“Doesn’t she look fabulous?” Roxi broke the spell with her enthusiasm as Natalie stood on shaky, coltish legs. “Who could believe that a simple haircut could make her look so adult and sexy? Say goodbye to childhood, Natalie. You’re all grown up!”
The enthusiasm of the make up artist was wea pap paper-thin, the words nicking and stinging cuts over her heart. Natalie squirmed under Hayden’s narrow-eyed appraisal. “Well,” she heaved what she hoped was a light hearted sigh, “I’d better find out what Annie wants me to wear. I…I’ll see you after bit, Hayden.” All he did was nod curtly, and Natalie escaped with as much dignity as she could muster while images of their last meeting melted the center of her equilibrium. In response to the graphic pictures in her head, a liquid, tingling buzz started between her thighs. Frantic, she searched for Annie.
Hayden sat stoically through Roxi’s incessant chatter. Normally, he would’ve joked and laughed with her, but seeing Natalie again, and being completely blown away by the sexy transformation wiped out any pretence of normalcy. It was only his upbringing that kept him from going after her and locking them into a closet where he could strip her and force her to come to grips with what she’d done…and said. The more he thought on everything, the deeper he fell into the dark recesses of his psyche. Something sinister strained against a cage hidden in the shadowed corners of his soul locked since birth. Maybe, he mused, it had always been there, lingering just beneath the surface of his happy-go-lucky self. Frowning, he cast blame in Natalie’s direction. How dare she act like he was just another human being to her!
Forty-five minutes later, Hayden strode into the studio clothed in an Armani tuxedo, bowtie hanging around his neck, most of the pristine white shirt undone, hair mussed to look as if he’d just had a passionate rendezvous with a lover. Natalie’s heart thumped in agitation and try as she might, she couldn’t wrench her eyes away from his devastating form. Her own outfit had given her a temporary respite of cool, but it floated away like mist at the slight glance from him.
Hayden took in the long Asian-inspired gown caressing Natalie’s form as if it loved her soft, creamy flesh. He snorted to himself. Yea, why wouldn’t it? Ignoring the accelerated heartbeat he examined her, immediately spotting the outlines of her nipples through the sheer material of the dress. Irritated, his brows drew together as he noticed one of Annie’s crew staring unabashedly at the sight. Without a word Hayden glared at the young man until the icy gaze burned a hole in his head. Startled, the crewmember turned and flushed at the threats issuing from Hayden’s stare. Clearing his throat, the man turned his back, leaving Hayden to return to his perusal. Sullen, his eyes fastened on her breasts. And when did she mature into those? He wondered. Don’t you remember, his mind taunted. Three weeks ago? You adored them, worshipped them, shaped them. Remember how they felt? Tasted?
“Good morning, Hayden!” Annie greeted, startling him and venturing close to give him a hug. “It is so good to see you again! And you look just as I imagined! This is going to be so great! So hot!”
“Hot?”
“I saw the fashion shoots of you in GQ and Vogue and I just knew I had to do this little set up with you and Natalie! I wanted readers to see you two all grown up and sexy and ready to move on into mature roles. But, mostly,” she grinned, conspiratorially, “I wanted the chance to create. I’ve had these great ideas and you two were the only two who kept coming to mind. Thank you so much for doing this!”
“No problem,” he smiled as he realized where she wanted the shoot to go. Close together. Lots of touching. Looking. Nat had to be squirmingne lne look at her confirmed his suspicions. She’d thought this would be something to do with Star Wars. He wanted to tip back his head and laugh. Inwardly, he did just that, the evil and disturbing sound ricocheting through his brain.
“Ok, crew, let’s get this first shot set up and then I want all of you out of here,” Annie instructed, bustling aroundr chr cheeks flushed with creative excitement. “I want NO disturbances! Out of sight. No peeking in for any reason. Understood? Roxie, you stay in make up and I’ll send them down as I need to. Wardrobe, the same. All right, people, let’s move!”
For the next fifteen minutes the set was a blur of activity as last minute preparations were taken care of; lights adjusted, cameras readied, mood music thumping an exotic, erotic beat… Annie placed Hayden and Natalie close together in front of an evening garden backdrop, complete with a full moon in the sky, as everyone else filed out. Longingly, Roxie took one glance over her shoulder at the couple and sighed at the look in Hayden’s eye as he focused on Natalie but listened intently to Annie’s instructions. Natalie seemed to be nervous and insecure. Roxie shook her head. Some girls had all the luck!
“Natalie, lean back against the railing, holding onto it. That’s it. Curve your fingers around it. Hayden, step closer. Straddle your legs on each side of her so she looks trapped. Oh, beautiful!”
“Are you sure about this?” Natalie tilted her chin, frowning at Annie. “I don’t want to start a whole new set of rumors. They drive me crazy! I don’t think what you’re going for will…”
“Trust me, it will be perfect!” Annie moved around with the light meter, checking everything. “This is more a study in black and white. Next weekend is the Vogue shoot on the island of Majorca. ”
“There’s more?” Natalie gasped, bowing her body a fraction farther from Hayden.
A low chuckle vibrated in Hayden’s chest startling Natalie’s eyes to h “Oh “Oh, yes, Natalie,” he murmured, leaning his body into hers, holding her gaze, the corner of his mouth crooked in wicked amusement. The press of his body received an automatic shift closer of hers. Horrified her eyes fastened onto his lips, unable to look away from the contours as he formed two words that loosed shivers along her spine. “Much more.”
“Yes! Yes, that’s it!” Annie encouraged as the shutter of her camera whirred, catching every nuance, exposing every emotion. “Look scared, Natalie…like he’s trying to control you and his eyes are pulling you in, forcing you to obey. He’s mesmerizing…”
The words spilling from Annie fell into incoherence, the static revving between Hayden and Natalie overriding any other sound to Natalie’s ears. She didn’t need Annie’s direction. Hayden had her, refused to let her look away and a corner of his lips quirked in slumberous satisfaction. Tiny pants of ragged emotion puffed between her lips as he bent his head closer, his face filling her line of vision. A thousand electrical butterflies fluttered, stinging her belly with beating wings of excited apprehension. The lips, so good at what they did, hovered above hers, moist and inviting and full of dark promise. They drew closer and Natalie tipped her head to receive the wicked, tempting caress he dangled invitingly over her.
Right before their lips touched, Hayden’s head moved to the side, his cheek slowly sliding along hers. The tantalizing friction tilted Natalie’s head to receive the caress, her eyes drifting shut in blissful languor savoring the contact; completely unaware of Annie directing Hayden’s movement and telling her to close her eyes and pretend she craved the touch. In the crook of her neck, Hayden smiled to himself. As he lifted his head, he paused beside her ear, lips so close his breath shivered into the perfect shell.
“You’ve been a very naughty girl, haven’t you, Natalie?”
His head eclipsed the light, conjuring an evil silhouette. In the shadows his eyes sparkled with intense purpose.
Panic pinched Natalie’s lips, cleaving her tongue to the roof of her mouth and rendering speech impossible. The defiant sparkle in her tawny eyes flickered in hesitation at his intimidating stare.
At his twisted smile, Natalie blinked in alarm. On any other person the smile would have distorted the face, marring the handsome features. Natalie choked down the lump in her throat. But this was Hayden and she hazily thought he was never more seductively fascinating. Dark. Intimidation suited him. Suited him way too much. An eyebrow climbed as he registered the erratic flutter pulsing beneath the smooth skin of her throat. All her bravado faltered beneath the weight of his barely concealed temper.
“Tsk, tsk,” he chided softly, a long finger lightly touching the pulse, testing the frantic thump. “I never figured you to be a liar, Natalie.”
“I d…don’t lie,” she breathlessly denied.
“No? This says differently.” Emphasizing his point, he pressed more firmly over the incriminating spot that betrayed her.
Natalie nervously glanced at Annie, wondering if she heard them, but Annie kept clicking away, calling out instructions from time to time but content with letting them do their own thing.
“You’re heart’s racing,” His lips pursed as he felt the proof of her response beneath the pad of his finger. A speculative gleam bore into her. “I think you like being pressed this close to me.”
The accusation stung. She wilted under the biting words, cursing herself for being aroused.
“Move your finger a little to the left!” Annie called above the heavy beat of the mood music. Hayden slid his finger over. “Perfect! Hold still. I’m almost out of film.” The shutter buzzed like an angry wasp then suddenly ceased. “There! While I change film and setting go freshen your make up and change outfits.”
Natalie sprang away from Hayden the moment Annie turned her back. But he was quicker, his fingers shackling her wrist, thwarting any escape. Drawing her slight form as tall as she could, she prepared to rebuke him. Hayden’s taunting interfered.
“You can run, but you can’t hide,” he murmured, the smile vanishing, eyelids lowering over steely blue eyes. “Time is running out for you. Tick. Tick. Tick.”
Aghast, Natalie broke free from his loosening grasp and scurried away as if her life depended on it. She escaped to the safety of Roxie’s make up chair, missing the fierce, determined fire in Hayden’s eyes.
Hayden watched her retreating form in silence. The past few weeks were catching up to him. The only time he’d ever lost his cool had been the night he’d barged into her apartment months earlier when she’d played with him and kept him dangling for days. He’d turned the tables on her with a vengeance, the knowledge they would soon be parted driving him to desperate lengths. Afterwards, she’d gazed up at him with large, damp eyes and whispered her promise to never twist him in knots like that again. But he was in knots once more. Where was her promise? Aggression was not in his personality. Well, not until Natalie. She wanted games then he would play…to win.
“Look angry!”
It was no act. The hours of close proximity to him were wearing on her tattered emotions. Hard fingers cupped Natalie’s chin and she lifted her eyes, fuming. In answer, Hayden gripped her chin harder.
“I’m the one who has the right to be angry, not you,” he growled under his breath, the weeks of attemptio reo reach her tearing at him, adding a tinge of menace to his words. They had mussed her hair, slid her into a black slip dress, sheer lace teasingly exposing the rounded curves of her breasts, and reddened her already pouty lips. He had seen her in less, but did the rest of the world have to see her like this, too?
Guilt clouded Natalie’s eyes. No response spilled from her lips, the anger fizzling, his words dousing the flames of her ire. Why was he looking at her like that? Confused she lowered her eyes and turned her back to him, much to Annie’s delight.
“Excellent, now Hayden let your eyelids droop over your eyes,” Annie called out, circling the pair. “Natalie, let your eyes glaze over like you can’t get a bearing on your surroundings.”
“Do you see that chair over there, Nat?'” Natalie’s eyes strayed to the upholstered chair on the far side of the room, a forgotten prop from some long ago shoot. “It’s the perfect height.” Natalie blinked, puzzlement shading her eyes. She didn’t have to wait long for the answer. “The perfect height to bend you over it and take you from behind.”
The heart stopping visual Hayden forced upon her made her knees buckle and if Hayden hadn'thtenhtened his grip she was sure she would have sunk to the floor.
Wouldn’t he just love that, she thought darkly. A taunt whirled up from a hidden spring in her soul. Wouldn’t I? Stop it! She scolded herself. Giving into the spell being cast by Hayden wasn't going to solve anything! Her body began to liquefy in a place inside her that he knew all too well.
“Shut up!” She hissed frantically working to free her mind of the imagery, furious at both herself for her ulingling reaction and him for putting the image there in the first place. In angry embarrassment her brows lowered.
"Don't look angry, Natalie!" Annie called out, still roving around them, the camera whirring with activity. "Turn back around and look at him passionately, like all you want to do is spend the night exploring every inch of him, heart, body and soul.”
The images conjured up left Natalie weak-kneed but she obeyed and moved closer, her fingers touching the hot, dry, smooth skin of his chest where his shirt fell open. A wave of electricity sparked between them, the current sizzling along her fingers and up her arm, speeding through all the channels it could find to bathe her body in fire. A sharp tingle in her nipple spread through her. Shock forced her eyes up again, the predatory gleam in his almost her undoing. Again it tingled. Only this time she felt the reason as his finger lightly skimmed over the silk covering her pebbled nipp She She gasped at the overwhelming rush and her fingers jerked away from him instinctively as if they'd been burned, but returned to graze his skin like he’d grazed hers, mesmerized like a moth to a flame. In response, his hand cupped her cheek, the thumb sliding over the satin of her skin. Gentle pressure against the back of her head guided her close, her face coming to rest against that deliciously warm flesh. Lids, heavy and weighted, drifted down over the golden brown irises.
"Great! Now look right at the camera, you two, and don't smile!" The camera buzzed off a few more frames then Annie moved, still looking through the camera's eye. "Ok, Natalie turn and lean against Hayden. Right. Hayden, wrap your arms around her waist and both of you lift your heads and close your eyes. Perfect! Oh! I wish I'd gotten that with your shirts off!" Natalie's eyes popped open in time with the dropping of her jaw. She felt rather than heard Hayden's amused chuckle and looked over but Annie was too far into feeling the flow of her creative juices to notice anything amiss. “Ok, turn and lean against Hayden’s back again. Hayden pull her back against you.”
“Are you wet, Natalie? Should I check?” His hand began to slink downwards, honing in on the guilty spot. The pressure of his hand pressed her backside into contact with his own hard arousal. She jerked away almost toppling over. Annie lowered the camera.
“Are you all right, Natalie?” Annie hurried over, scanning the pale face, the trembling form.
“You’re shaking, Natalie,” Hayden leaned down, his face and voice full of concern. “Are you ill?”
“I’m…fine,” Natalie answered breathlessly, her cheeks draining of all color. “I was in a hurry and didn’t eat breakfast. I think my blood sugar is low.”
Behind Annie, Hayden smirked at the bold faced lie. The little vixen was lying out of her behind! Admiringly, he gave her silent marks for thinking fast on her feet.
Annie clucked sympathetically. “You shouldn’t miss the morning meal,” she admonished gently. Hurrying over to her satchel, she pulled out a granola bar and tossed it to Natalie. “ Take five, you two. I’m going to get some more film.”
Natalie eyed the granola bar with distaste. Hunger wasn’t the problem. Not for food, anyway. The thought of eating churned her stomach, and a wave of dizziness washed over her. Hayden grasped her upper arm to steady her when she swayed.
A twinge of guilt pricked Hayden’s conscious as he scrutinized her pale face and panic stricken eyes. But it only lasted a moment. Remembering the chase Natalie had been leading him on, he pressed his advantage and crowded her personal space. Astounded, Natalie attempted to back up a step. Hayden advanced. Natalie retreated. Hayden advanced. Natalie retreated, her back colliding abruptly with the wall. Before she could dart to the side, Hayden blocked her escape placing a hand on each side of her and lowered his lips to her ear.
"You're wet, aren't you, Natalie?" the deep voice slithered the words again into her ear releasing shockwaves of need through her in ever increasing ripples. "Wet, and hot, and completely all mine.” Hayden's tongue dipped into the shell of Natalie's ear. In spite of her rolling insides, Natalie bit her lip to stifle the imminent groan swelling in her throat.
Brushing his cheek against hers, Hayden lifted his head, the blue eyes stabbing her with sensual intent. Horrified at her immediate and willing surrender she cursed herself silently and tried to rally her defenses.
Hard fingers grasped her wrists before she could open her mouth and brought them high above her head. The air around her depleted and she struggled for breath, gasping as she felt his hardness grind against her. A thousand responses and alarms clanged and whistled in her head and she loosed a weak moan. Broken and defeated she couldn’t halt her hips from seeking out the evidence of his need. A mirthless smile cracked his stern features.
“Hayden,” Natalie pleaded hoarsely through dry lips, lifting stricken, glazed eyes to his. “Please…d…don’t dos!” s!”
Without warning, his hand freed one of her wrists. His hips lifted away from hers. Open mouthed she stared at him, her heart galloping away with her common sense. Time drew away from her, slowed to a crawl, snatching her awareness of the world around her. Dreamlike, she lost herself in the hypnotic blue fire of his eyes. Of its own accord, the hand that had been granted its freedom slid slowly down his neck, over the heated skin of his chest, down over the buckle of his pants to the ridged flesh straining for release. Slow, steady strokes brushed over the bulge.
A harsh breath rushed from Hayden, stirring the fringe of hair along her forehead. The unexpected caress closed his tortured eyes and dropped his head that was suddenly too heavy to hold up. "Yes, sweetheart, explore me, it’s been a while," Hayden muttered, his lips barely moving. Commanded she complied, pressing harder, fingers forming the shape of him.
“I said in a few minutes!” Annie’s exasperated, muffled voice infiltrated Hayden’s consciousness.
Acting fast, Hayden cursed and pulled away, grabbed a glassy-eyed Natalie and shoved her into a nearby chair. Flinging himself into the next one he slumped over, resting his elbowshis his knees to hide the painful erection. Seconds later, Annie burst into the studio.
“Phew! It’s always something,” She grinned walking across the floor. “How are we doing? Any better?” Natalie’s now ashen face lifted, startling Annie. “No, I guess not. That’s it. Natalie, you’re done for the day. Get yourself out of here and go soak in a relaxing, hot tub. I can finish up here with some of just Hayden.”
Hayden bit his tongue, masking the disappointment. He had been so close to breaking her! Damn it! Completely false sympathetic drivel fell from his lips. Forced to act the part, he resigned himself to having victory torn from him. She had won the battle. She wouldn’t win the war.
Natalie stood on shaky legs, relief coursing through her. Escape! Already, her spirits were lifting as she murmured a reply and headed away from the object of her demise. She had a head start on him and he didn’t know where she was staying! Color flowed back into her cheeks and sparkles to her eyes. A reprieve! By the time she reached the wardrobe area she was practically giddy and had to remind herself to act as ill as she’d felt minutes earlier.
It took every ounce of acting in her, but she pulled it off. Soon, she was sitting in the back of a limo weak with relief.
Thank heavens Ewan had invited her to stay at his house!
