Chapter 24
Tia sank underneath the water when she heard his voice. She came up spurting water from her mouth. She pushed her hair out of her face and looked at him. He was smiling. What the hell was he doing here? She thought he had left.
“I thought you left.” She said quietly.
“Not a chance.” He watched as her eyes quickly darted to where her clothes used to be. Damnit she thought, those were the only clothes she had brought with her. And she didn’t bring a towel or blanket.
“Where are my clothes Orlando?” she asked, not moving from where she was.
“I moved them.”
“Give them back.” She demanded. Orlando smiled at her again. She was getting frazzled.
“Nope.”
“I figured if I left the house, you’d come back and get your things and leave.”
“I’m not leaving.”
“Why? You don’t want anything to do with me. I could see it in your eyes Orlando. So just leave and get on with your life. Be happy and forget about me.” She turned and swam towards the other side of the pond.
Orlando began to remove his clothes. She wasn’t going to get away from him that easily. Tia didn’t want to turn around and watch him walking away. It would break her heart once again. She yelped in surprise when she heard the splash and felt the ripples in the water. She tried to swim away as he neared her, but he was the faster swimmer. He caught her in his arms.
“You’re naked.” She said with a shriek.
“Isn’t that what you are when you go skinny dipping?” he asked, raising an eyebrow at her.
“Let me go. Get out of my life Orlando!” She struggled in his arms, which only tightened his hold on her.
“We are going to talk Tia. Whether you like it or not. Come on.” He took her hand and began to pull her towards shore. She struggled until he gave her his determined look..
“Fine.” Why couldn’t he have just gone away and left her in her heartache? Why did he have to come back and make her feel everything that she didn’t want to feel? Everything that she wanted to put out of her mind. And here he was with her. Naked on top of that. He strode out of the water and held out his hand to her. She couldn’t tear her eyes from his body. He sure knew how to distract her. Damn him.
“Come on Tia.” She didn’t take his hand. She wrapped her arms over her breasts and sat down next to him on the blanket that he had laid out. She wouldn’t look at him.
He watched her. Watched her not looking at him. He moved so that he was sitting directly in front of her.
“Orlando, my clothes please?” she pleaded with him.
“Not on your life. Then you’ll run away and not listen to what I have to say to you.” She looked away from him. He suddenly felt bad. “Am I making you uncomfortable love?”
“Yes. And stop calling me that.” Orlando reached over and picked up his t-shirt. He held it out to her and she quickly put it on. As she brought it over her head, she inhaled as it had his scent on it. It wasn’t much, but at least she felt a little more decent. Sensing her apprehension, he put his jeans on.
“Better?” he asked.
“Yes.”
“Will you please look at me? Don’t make this harder than it needs to be.” Tia slowly turned her head back to him. She could feel the tears welling up in her eyes once again. Damnit, stop crying she told herself, but her tears were uncontrollable. She brushed them away with the back of her hand.
“I’m a fool.” He said. “I’m a fool that didn’t listen when you talked to me.”
“You’re not a fool Orlando.”
“May I finish?” he asked with a lopsided grin. She nodded. “I’m sorry for the angry words I said to you. I’m sorry for not giving you the benefit of the doubt. I’m sorry being a total ass.”
“You shouldn’t be the one apologizing.”
“Yes I should Tia. I talked to Lisa.” Tia’s eyes widened.
“What did she say?”
“She said that your heart has been broken since you walked out of my life and that I need to fix that broken heart.” He scooted closer to her and took her hands in his. He kissed her knuckles and reached up and placed a hand on the back of her neck, drawing her closer to him. She reached up and tried to pull his arm away, but he only tightened his hold.
“Orlando…” she breathed as she looked deep into his eyes.
“Orli bear love. Always your Orli bear. I love you Tia Alexander. More than I’ve ever loved anyone in my life. And if you don’t give us a second chance, I swear I don’t know what I’m likely to do.” Tia felt sick to her stomach. He continued to keep his hand behind her neck, forcing her to look at him. “I love you to the very depths of my soul. And I am not going to let you out of my life.”
“Orli, I can’t.” She cried.
“Why can’t you? Does your heart ache when I’m not around?”
“Yes.”
“Does your body crave my touch?” He asked, sliding his other hand to caress her breast through his shirt. Her nipple hardened immediately. “You don’t need to answer that, your body is answering for you.” She didn’t try to pull away and he didn’t move his hand away.
”Do you trust me Tia? Do you trust me enough to know that things between us can be even better the second time around? That there isn’t anything that can stand in our way of our happiness.”
“I trust you Orli, I just don’t know. I couldn’t bear hurting you.”
“Is there anything else in your past that you haven’t told me about?”
“No.”
“Then what are you afraid of? Why can’t you let me in?”
“I don’t want to lose you again. I’m so afraid.”
“Don’t be afraid. Just love me.”
“I do love you. What about your management? They won’t like this.”
“You let me worry about them. Does that mean you’re willing to try?” Tia slowly nodded her head. Still frightened of what could happen with his management. She only wanted the best for him. She didn’t want to hurt him any more. Orlando let go of her neck and stood up. He reached into his pocket and pulled something out.
“What are you doing?” she asked. He knelt down on one knee in front of her and took her left hand in his.
“You’ve given us a second chance Tia, and I’m not going to ever let you go. Marry me?” Orlando held up a princess cut diamond ring. Tia felt as if her entire body was on fire. She hadn’t expected this. “I love you Tia. I want to spend forever with you.” Tia’s eyes moved from the ring back to him. She could see the tears in his eyes.
“I don’t know what to say Orli.”
“Say yes Tia.”
“Orli, I….”
“Let me tell you a story.” He said, “The time that we spent together in New Zealand was magical. You know that as well as I. The things that we did. The places that we explored. The places that we made love. You have stuck by me through thick and thin, You helped to nurse me back to health after my fall. You helped me with everything that I’ve worked for. We have a special connection. I felt it the moment I saw you in Harrod’s. Do you remember Tia?” She nodded her head. Remembering back to the first time they had met. She was in the lingerie department with her sister and she just happened to glance up to see the most beautiful face looking at her.
“I remember.”
“We are meant to be together. I was going to propose to you the day that you left.” He heard her intake of breath. “I was coming home from the jewelers with this very ring. I’ve always kept it in hope that maybe someday I would see it on your hand. Bound to each other forever.”
“Oh Orli bear!” she let her tears flow freely. As did his. She reached up and wiped his away.
“I’m sorry Orli bear.” She gently pulled his face to hers and her lips grazed his. “Yes, my answer is yes.” She whispered against his lips.
