Chapter 23
The next morning, Ann was ready to hop on a plane and go get Gerry. Not even Lisa got get him on the phone. She had tried him several times to no avail and resorted to calling his mother. Not even she could get him to answer. As far as flying out there, Ann was in luck because Brendan had to be in LA for an audition. He was flying out that afternoon but the audition was not until the next day. “I promise I will check on him and let you know how he is,” Brendan said as he packed a few things. Lynn wanted to go with Brendan, but she knew that even if she stayed with Ann, she would end up in LA later that night. Something told her that Ann was going to have to go out there to talk to him.
“Maybe he didn’t see the picture,” Lynn said handing a cup of tea. “Maybe he’s just busy.”
“But he isn’t,” Ann said worriedly. “Lisa told me he had the day off.”
“I don’t know what to tell you. I mean I hate to say I told you so, but I did. You had to know something bad was going to happen.”
“I did though. I knew when Adam gave me those flowers and when he gave me his coat that something wasn’t right.”

When Brendan arrived at the hotel, he realized it was the same one Gerry was at. In truth, he did that on purpose. After he had gotten to his room and put his stuff down, he called Gerry's room.
When Gerry picked up the phone, it was obvious he was drunk. “Hello?” he managed to slur.
“Ger, it’s Brendan. Have you been drinking?”
“No.”
“Don’t lie to me, you suck at it. I thought you didn’t drink anymore.”
“Yeah? Well that’s been thrown out the fuck window.”
“So how are you doing? I mean other than that.”
“How do you think? My girlfriend is all over the papers kissing another guy. An not just any guy, no it had to be her ex! Because of that, my 10 years of sobriety is gone. I think I am on my second bottle of scotch!”
“She has been trying to call you to-”
Gerry cut him off. “I know and I don’t want to hear it.”
“Listen, she is just as upset about the whole thing as you are.”
“Probably because she got caught.”
“That is not why,” Brendan yelled into the phone.
“Then why? I want to know why she did it, why she went out with him.”
“I can't tell you that. I didn’t even know she went out with him until this morning and I can't even begin to understand why she did.”
Gerry began to cry. “Does she not know how much I love her?
“I am sure she does, but you need to give her a chance to tell you what happened.”
“I gotta go. My whiskey is here.”
“I will see you in a few.”
After Brendan finally got Gerry to open the door, he walked into what he could only assume what used to be a nice room. There were clothes everywhere along with a huge pile of dirty dishes. On the bed side table were two empty bottles of scotch. Gerry was holding an only slightly over half full bottle of Jack Daniels.
Brendan went to grab the bottle of whiskey, but Gerry pulled back. “Give me that. I don’t think you need anymore.”
“Stop acting like my mother,” Gerry said as he took a drunken swing at Brendan.
“Gerry you are drunk. You can't let this get to you that much. You don’t even know what happened.”
“I don’t understand.” There was a long pause as Gerry looked for his words and searched for his ballence. “I know,” he said finally as he walked into the bedroom, “I am going to fly back there and kick his ass!”
Brendan followed him and as Gerry was standing over the bed, he said, “Don’t hate me, but this is for your own good. Before Gerry could say anything, Brendan punched him square in the jaw. Gerry, already quite drunk, imeditally passed out, falling on the bed. Brendan, careful not to wake him, pulled Gerry all the way on the bed, put a pillow under his head and covered him with the blanket.
He stood there for a moment, just to make sure he was still breathing. Once he was sure Gerry was alive, Brendan went into the other room and began to pick it up. About an hour later, he had finished, so he called Lynn.
“Hey baby,” he said. “How is he?”
“You know how he is a recovering alcoholic?”
“No. He didn’t?”
“Two bottles of scotch and half a bottle of Jack.”
“Do you think we should come out there?”
“Yes. I didn’t think I should be the one who told him what happened. I think she needs to. I think he needs her here.”
“So what is he doing now?”
“He’s passed out in bed. He stared to get a little angry, so I punched him.”
“Great idea.”
“So I will see you soon?”
“Yep. I think there is a flight out to LA that leaves two hours. We should be there around midnight.”
“Well just call me when you know when your flight will get in. I’ll have a car ick you two up, so you don’t have to hail a cab.”
“Thanks. And…” There was a long pause.
“And what?”
“I love you.”
“See. Now that wasn’t so hard to say was it?”
“Brendan, stop it. You know it took a lot for me to say that.”
“I so know and I love you too. See you soon.”
“Bye.” When Lynn got off the phone she turned to Ann. “Get your shit together. We’re leaving in five minuets. When Ann returned to the living room and saw that Lynn already had a bag packed, she made a face. “I knew this would happen. I still don’t understand why the three of us didn’t fly out there together.”
“I didn’t know if I should. I don’t want to know what you were talking about with Brendan,, but obviously I should be there to let Gerry know that I still love him.” Ann began to cry. “Do you think he still loves me?”
Lynn took Ann into her arms and held her as she cried. “I know he still does.” They got to the airport only 20 minuets before the flight was supposed to leave. It was a long flight and Ann slept through most of it with her head on Lynn’s shoulder.
When they got to the hotel Brendan was waiting for them. While he was cleaning up Gerry's room, he grabbed the other room key. He handed it to Ann who hugged him tight and thanked him for thinking of it. When she walked into the room, she began to cry. Even though it had been tidied, it still smelled like a bar. There was at least a pack of cigarette butts in the ashtray, and the smell of liquor filled the air. Ann wanted nothing more than to climb into bed with Gerry and just hold him, but she decided to sleep alone on the couch in the next room.

When Gerry woke in the morning, he had a terrible headache. He walked out to the living room and saw Ann, curled up on the couch with his favorite sweater on. He was still angry with her, but he couldn’t deny how much he loved her. No matter what happened he would always love her.
As Gerry began to walk away, Ann woke up. She shot up and cam to her feet. “Gerry?” she said with worry in her voice and tears forming. As he turned around, she ran to him. He opened his arms and held her as she cried and told him what happened. “He, he came to my show,” she stammered tears in her voice. “He asked me to dinner because he wanted to talk. I didn’t think that would happen. If I knew he was going to kiss me I wouldn’t have gone.”
“Why did you go?”
“He wanted to talk to me.”
“Yes you said that, but why did you go?”
“I don’t know, I guess somewhere deep inside I still love him. I don’t know what is wrong with me.” Her crying became more intence.
“Ann just breathe.”
“I don’t know why I did it. I don’t know why I can't let him go. I have you. I love you more than I can even put into words and I am pretty sure that you love me too, but I can't let him go. He hurt me so much and I can let him go.
“Shhhh. Everything is going to be okay.”
“How can you be so cool about all of this?”
“I know you love me.”
“But I kissed him. You have to believe I didn’t want that.”
“I do,” Gerry said as he stroked her head. “You could have avoided this if you had just told me before I found out from the press.”
“I know and I am sorrier than you will ever know. I love you so much and I don’t want to loose you.”
“I don’t want to loose you either. Come to bed with me.” As he laid down, Ann curled up next to him and cried for a few minuets before she drifted off. He just laid there thinking about things. He was upset with himself for drinking, but glad that he did, because it showed him how much he loved Ann. He was glad that Brendan didn’t tell her that it was because of her that his sobriety had been ruined. He also realized how hard this relationship with Ann could get. He didn’t care. After this problem, there wasn’t a lot that could tear them apart.
