Chapter 24: I’m Just a Fool; a Fool in Love with You
∞♥♥∞
The next morning, I woke up before Chris did. I was glad, for I wanted to slip out of the house before he noticed. I had one thing to do before I would accept his proposal, and that was going to the mall to pick up something special for the occasion. I looked over at him. He was even more beautiful when he slept. He looked to peaceful and serene. I was tempted to kiss him, but didn’t want to wake him, so I didn’t. I slipped on some clean clothes, and then left the room, shutting the door as quietly as I could behind me. I did what I had to do in the bathroom, and then I went downstairs, hoping to make my exit without anyone noticing. Of course, both sets of parents were already up. Was is it with parents getting up at ungodly hours of the morning?
“Good morning, Blake. Is Chris up yet?” Phyllis asked.
I shook my head. “Na. He’s still sleeping.”
“Well sit down and make yourself comfortable. Phyllis made pancakes. We know how much you love her pancakes,” Danny said.
I smiled, but shook my head. “Thanks, I’ll have some in a bit. Right now I have a quick errand to run first.”
“Where do you have to go at ten in the morning?” my mother asked.
“The mall,” I said. I put my weight on my other foot. I was just itching to get out of there before Chris woke up.
“What do you need to go tot he mall for? It’s the day after Christmas. It’s going to be backed with people returning gifts, you know,” my father stated. He took a sip of his coffee.
“Look, I just have to go, all right?” I hadn’t meant to snap, but this was getting ridiculous. “I’m sorry,” I said as I saw the warning look on both my parents’ faces. “I didn’t mean to snap. I just want to get one last surprise for Chris
before he wakes up.”
Thankfully, this shut them up.
“You’ll probably be back after he’s already up,” Danny sipped her coffee as well.
“That’s fine. I just need to get out of here before he wakes up and drills me on where I’m going.” I shot everyone a look as if to say, like you guys are.
“I’ll have the pancakes warmed and ready for you when you get back,” Phyllis said as I headed to the door to put my shoes and jacket on.
“Thank you. I’ll be looking forward to them,” I said. I was finally ready. I headed out the door, and to Chris’ car that he kept at this home. He had given me a spare key so that I could use his car when needed.
I got in the car, locked my seat belt into place, started the car, and then finally got the hell out of there. It was about time!

When I woke up, I instinctively felt around for Blake. I frowned when I felt an empty space beside me. I opened my eyes to confirm, and sure enough, Blake was gone.
I rubbed my eyes, and then climbed out of bed. It wasn’t like him to get up without me—especially at my parents’ place. I headed out of my room and down the stairs, where I found both sets of parents sitting at the table and having breakfast. Blake was nowhere to be found. It kind of reminded me of a dream I had a little while back when I was sick. I had woken up to find Blake gone. When I finally found him, he was making out with Jordin in the pool house. He ended up dying at the end. It was such a horrible dream…
My mother smiled at me when she saw me in the dining room doorway. “Good morning, honey. Did you sleep well?”
I nodded. “Yes, thank you. Have you seen Blake anywhere?”
“He had an errand to run. He said he’d be back shortly. Sit down and have some breakfast with us,” my father said.
I shook my head. “I want to take a shower. I’ll wait to eat until Blake gets back. Did he say where he was going?”
“He went to the mall,” Dinah answered.
“Did he say why?” I asked. I had to wonder what on earth he had to go to the mall so early for.
Dallas smiled, a mug of coffee at his lips. “You’ll find out when he gets back, I’m sure.”
“I’m going to go take that shower now,” I said, extremely puzzled. They were all acting weird.
I headed to take my shower and get ready for the day, hoping that Blake would be back by the time I got out.
When I got out of the shower, I headed to my room, hoping to find Blake waiting for me. Instead, my mother was sitting on my made bed with Blake’s turtle in her hands.
I stopped short in the doorway. I wondered if she had squeezed it.
She squeezed it right before my eyes, and my voice filled the room. From the look on her face, it wasn’t the first time she had heard the message. “Did you give this to Blake yet?”
“Mom, what are you doing in here?” I asked nervously. I walked into the room, even though I wanted to walk away from it.
“I came in to make your bed for you before Dinah and I leave for the spa. I found this. So, did you give it to him yet or not?”
I was trying to judge her tone of voice, but it was hard to. “Um, yes, I did.”
“What did he say?”
I looked down to the floor, hating the memory. “He said he’d let me know his answer today. I doubt he’s going to say yes. He would have said yes right away if he was. Then he’s gone when I wake up. He is probably avoiding me because he’s not ready to tell me know yet. He doesn’t want to hurt me.”
“Come here.”
I looked up at my mother, and she motioned me over to sit down next to her on the bed. I did, and she began to rub my back with one hand. Her other hand continued to hold the turtle. “I’m sure he’s not going to say no. I’ve seen the way he looks at you, honey. Trust me. There’s no one else he’d rather be with.”
“Who said anything about there being anyone else?” I asked. I felt my stomach tighten. “Do you think there is someone else? Do you think that’s why he didn’t say yes right away?”
“Honey, I only meant that, judging by the way he looks at you, you’re the only one he sees. He’s in love with you. He’s not going to say no.” She winked.
“Well then why is he making me wait?” I asked, resting my head against her shoulder.
She smiled. “You know Blake. I’m sure he has something up his sleeve.” She glanced at the clock. “I have to go. Don’t worry though.” She kissed the top of my head. “Everything will work out the way it should.” She set the turtle down on Blake’s pillow, and then stood up and headed to my bedroom door. “I’ll see you in a few hours. The pancakes are on the counter. You and Blake can just heat them back up in the microwave for thirty-seconds when you decide to eat them.”
“Thank you,” I said with a nod.
She smiled at me, and then left.
I sighed, and lay down on my back on my bed. I stared up at the ceiling, and tossed the turtle up, catching it every time it fell back down to me. I really hoped my mother was right. If she wasn’t, I didn’t know what I’d do.
B∞C
I smiled as I entered the house. I was happy to have gotten exactly what I needed. I was now ready to accept Chris’ proposal. No one was downstairs, so I headed upstairs to the bedroom. There was Chris, lying on the bed, holding my turtle, and staring up at the ceiling.
I knocked on the open door. “Knock, knock. Hey you. Did you miss me?” I smiled, and shut the door behind me. I locked it for good measure.
Chris looked over at me. “Hey. You left without telling me where you were going.”
I walked over to the bed and sat down next to him. I leaned down and kissed his lips. “I’m sorry. I was just getting something at the mall for you.”
He smiled at the mention of me buying something for him. “Really?” He sat up. “What is it?”
I laughed. “You’re starting to sound like me. Open it up. I think you can tell where it came from.” I laughed.
He grinned. “Um… Build-A-Bear?”
“How did you ever guess?” I teased as he opened the house-shaped box.
“Lucky guess.” He smiled when he took out the moose. He looked up at me. “Aw, you got me a moose to think of you since I got you the turtle to think of me?”
I grinned, and nodded towards the moose. “Why don’t you give him a squeeze? He has something important to tell you.”
Chris gave me a look of realization. “Is this your answer?”
I nodded.
He hesitated for just a moment, and then squeezed it. It spoke my message that I had recorded in my own voice. “Yes, Richie, I will marry you.”
He looked up at me with tears in his eyes. “Really?”
“Of course! Was there any doubt? I only made you wait for an answer because I thought it would be cute to answer you via a moose since you proposed to me via a turtle. The mall wasn’t open yesterday, so I couldn’t get the moose until now.”
“I was worried you had found someone else, and were going to say no to me, but were avoiding me because you didn’t know how to tell me.”
“What? Chris, who else would there be?” I was surprised to say the least.
He shrugged. “I don’t know.
“Baby, I love you. There is no one else but you for me, and there never will be. I love you and only you, and there is nothing I want more than to marry you. How could you ever doubt that? Come here.” I took him into my arms, and kissed him. I thumbed away his tears. “Don’t cry. This is supposed to be a happy day,” I said.
He nuzzled his cheek against my hand. “It is. I’m crying because I’m happy.”
I smiled, and pulled him down on top of me, kissing him deeply. “Where is everyone else?”
“Our moms are at the spa, and our dads went out somewhere or other. Who knows with those two.”
I grinned. “Well then how about you make love to me to consummate our engagement? Hm?” I kissed down the side of his neck, and he closed his eyes and smiled.
He then opened them again, and looked me in the eyes. “There's nothing I want more.” He kissed me, and I moaned into the kiss, hungrily kissing him back.
There was no doubt in my mind, that he was the only one I would ever want to marry. I could hardly wait to marry him…
B∞C
I was so happy he had said yes! I guess I had no reason to worry. I should have trusted in our love, I knew. I guess I just had self-confidence issues. I promised my self that from then of, I would be more confident in myself, and in Blake’s and my relationship—especially in Blake’s and my relationship.
I loved making love to him. It was even more special now that we were engaged.
“I love you,” he said, holding me as we lie in bed post-orgasmic bliss. He had me in his arms, and was kissing my neck and jaw before finally finding my lips.
I looked down at him with half-closed eyes. “I love you too. You have no idea how much I love you.”
“I think you just gave me a pretty good idea.”
We grinned at each other.
“Well, we had better get dressed, as much as I hate to say it. I have no idea when our fathers will be back.” I slowly sat up.
He groaned. “You seriously need to get your own place for when you’re in Virginia.”
I smiled at him. “You mean we need to get our own place. We’re going to be married now. There is no more just my place or just your place.”
He smiled too, and sat up. He kissed me. “Very true.”
We grabbed our clothes and headed to the bathroom to wash up before dressing.
“So, should we tell our parents when they get back tonight?” Blake asked.
I nodded. “We might as well. My mom already knows, I think. She found the turtle when she was making the bed earlier.”
Blake looked up at me. “What did she say?”
“She said to trust that you love me, and I’m the only one you want to marry. I had told her before that that I was worried you’d say no.”
He smiled. “See? She was right.”
I grinned. “Come here, you.” I pulled him in for another deep kiss.
He moaned. “Mm, keep that up and our fathers might just find us in a compromising position.”
I grinned, and backed him into the shower. “It wouldn’t be the first time someone caught us.”
He grinned. “True.”
I laughed, and turned the water on. So I had already taken a shower. So what? I’d take one fifty times in a row if it meant getting to have sex with Blake again.
B∞C
That evening, we all sat in the family room, drinking hot chocolate and eating cookies. We had finished dinner a short while before, and were all content to just sit around with our dessert and relax.
“Should we tell them now?” Blake murmured in my ear when our parents were laughing at some joke Dallas had just told.
I nodded. “We might as well. We leave tomorrow. We won’t really have a chance then.”
“You go first,” he said.
I gave him a look, but smiled. I then looked at our parents, and cleared my throat. “Blake and I have something we want to tell you guys.”
Our parents grew instantly quiet, as if someone had pressed a mute button. All eyes were on Blake and I.
I looked nervously at Blake, who was looking back at me, looking just as nervous.
I looked back at our parents. “Well, yesterday, I asked Blake to marry me.” There was no use in dragging it out.
Blake smiled. “And today, I said yes. It only took me so long to answer because… Well, when he proposed, he gave me a turtle from Build-A-Bear with a voice chip in it. He had recorded himself asking me to marry him. When I squeezed the turtle, I got to hear it. I wanted to get a moose to give him with me saying yes, but the mall was closed, and I couldn’t get it until this morning, so I had to wait. That is where I went today. I was getting the moose at Build-A-Bear,” Blake explained.
“Since his nickname is moose, and the fans call me turtle… We got each other the animal we did so that he would be reminded of me, and I’d be reminded of him.” I shut up then. Blake and I were both babbling, and I knew it. I guess that’s what happens when you’re as nervous as we were. I don’t know why we were nervous. Our parents would be happy.
They were all quiet for a moment.
“You’re not going to wish us congratulations?” Blake finally asked.
“I’m sorry, it’s just… How much of this did you think through?” Phyllis asked.
Okay, so maybe I was wrong. Maybe our parents weren’t happy after all…
B∞C
“What do you mean, mom? It’s been three years since Chris and I met each other, and he and I started dating shortly after that. We’re sure about this.”
Chris nodded his agreement. He took my hand in his own and kissed it. “I’ve never been more sure about anything.”
I smiled at him, and kissed his lips.
“Where are you two going to live? There aren’t a heck of a lot of states that allow gay marriage,” my father commented.
“We haven’t thought about it yet, but we’ll figure out something,” I said.
“If you don’t live in a state that legalizes gay marriage, you won’t have visitation access if, God forbid, one of you gets sick,” Phyllis said.
“Well, there are states that allow domestic partnerships, including your state. That works as a marriage as far as the medical part goes,” Chris said.
“Still, It will be harder to adopt children. If you guys aren’t recognized as being married, you’ll have to figure out a way to both have custody of your children,” Danny said.
“I think there’s such thing as a second parent adoption. We’re just talking about getting married now anyway. Kids aren’t on the agenda for a while,” I assured him.
Chris shook his head. “Not for a year or so after we’re married at least.”
“What about coming out to your fans? You haven’t even told the media about your relationship,” my mom chimed in.
“Why are you all so against Chris and I getting married? We love each other! Why is it so wrong for us to want to spend the rest of our lives together and make it official?” I asked, annoyed now that everyone was ganging up on us.
“We’re not against it, honey. We just think you guys need to be realistic about this, is all. You need to think of the consequences that you two getting married will have,” my mom said.
“We’re willing to work for this, Dinah. We know it won’t be easy, but we love each other. We’re going to make it work,” Chris assured my mother.
“I hope you guys will, I really do. I just want you guys to be realistic about this is all,” my mom told him.
I had heard enough. I stood up. “I can’t believe you guys are being like this! I thought you’d be happy for us.”
“We are, sweetie. We just want to make sure you two know all there is to know about going into a same-sex marriage or domestic partnership. It’s more involved for two men to marry than it is for a man and a woman.”
“Well you guys sure don’t act happy for us,” I snapped. I felt bad snapping at Chris’ mother, but frankly, I wasn’t too happy with any of our parents right then. I headed out of the room and up the steps to Chris’ bedroom. I couldn’t stay down there for a moment longer.
B∞C
I stood up. “I should go talk to him.”
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have come across like that. I really am happy for you two. No mother wants her son to be gay, but if you have to marry a man, I’m glad it’s Blake. If you’re sure this is what you want despite the hardships you’re going to have to go through, then you have my full blessing on this,” my mother said.
My dad nodded. “I’ve always stood by you, and this time is no different. If you really love Blake, then I say you two marry and don’t let anything stop you.”
I smiled. “So you’re not mad I’m marrying a man even after what the Bible says?”
My parents both shook their heads.
“If you truly love him, I’m sure God would want you two to be happy together,” my father said.
My mother nodded. “He must have brought you to together for some reason, right?”
I was so happy. I went over to my parents, hugging first my dad, and then my mother. “Thank you. That means so much to me. I do love Blake. I love him more than I’ve ever loved anyone. I don’t care what we have to go through. As long as I get to marry him, I’m willing to do whatever it takes to do so.”
“Well, at least I couldn’t ask for a better son-in-law. Come here and give your future father-in-law a hug!” Dallas said to me.
I grinned, and did as told. “So, you’re all right with this?”
He nodded. “If you two are, then I am. I already love you like a son. Why not make it official, right?”
I grinned. “Right!”
“Give me one of those,” Dinah said, extending her arms to me.
I grinned, and walked over to her and hugged her. “My son really loves you. You better take care of him.”
“I will. I promise you that,” I said, still smiling.
“I’m glad to hear it,” she said with a wink.
“I’m going to go tell Blake the good news,” I said to our parents.
They all nodded.
I then rushed up the stairs. I could hardly wait to tell him we had their blessings!
B∞C
When Chris came into the room and shut the door behind him, I looked up from where I was sitting on the bed. “So do they still hate the idea of us getting married?” I asked. I still couldn’t believe our own families were acting this way.
He sat down next to me, and took me into his arms. He was grinning. I guessed that was a good sign.
“They said if it’s what we really want, and we truly love each other, then they are behind us one hundred percent and we have their blessing. My mom even apologized.”
I smiled. “Really? My parents are okay with it too?”
“Well, your father said that I am already like a son to him, so we might as make it official. He gave me a hug, and then your mother wanted one. She told me I better make you happy, and I promised her I would.”
I grinned even more. “Your parents are okay with it too, despite being Christians?”
He grinned and nodded. “Yep! I asked, and they said God must have brought us together for a reason, and would want us to be happy.”
I squealed, not caring how girly it made me sound.
Chris grinned, and we kissed for a moment.
When we broke the kiss, he spoke. “So, what do we do about the media? Should we hold a press conference or something?”
I grinned and shrugged. “How about we just stop trying to hide it? Let everyone figure it out on their own. They basically all suspect it anyway. We can let them see without us having to say anything unless asked about it.”
He laughed. “That’s crazy.” He paused, and then grinned at me. “Let’s do it!”
I raised my eyebrows. “Right here and now? All right.” I started pushing him backwards on the bed, trying to hide my smile as I waited for him to stop me.
It didn’t take long. “You know what I mean!” He laughed, and gently pushed me back up. “Let’s come out by not hiding it anymore. Like you said, they’ll figure it out.”
I nodded. “Now we have that taken care of. Next topic. Where should we live? You know where I’d choose. We could live in Seattle and get a domestic partnership.”
“You know me. I love the East coast. Massachusetts allows gay marriage. If we do a domestic partnership, we have the choices of Washington, like you said, California, Connecticut, DC, Hawaii, Maine, New Jersey, Vermont, Hew Hampshire, or Oregon. So, if I wanted the East cost, we’d have DC, Connecticut, Maine, New Jersey, New Hampshire, or Vermont. This is if we don’t want to live in another country, which I’m really not digging.”
I smirked. “You did research, didn’t you?”
He grinned. “Yes, I did.”
I laughed at his southern accent. I had come out, “Yes ah did.”
“What?”
I kissed him. “Your accent is so irresistible.”
“Yeah? Mm… Show me how irresistible.”
“After we decide where to live. Washington, yes?”
I thought he’d protest, but to my surprise, he nodded. “I suppose so, since it is your hometown. I still want a summer home in Virginia Beach though. I know our marriage won’ be recognized there, but…” He trailed off.
I took his hand in my own and kissed it. “It will me legalized to us, and that is all that matters. We’ll only live in it for four months or so a year anyway. Chances are, we won’t get seriously ill when living there, so it won’t matter. If we do, well. We can transfer to a hospital in DC. It’s close by to Virginia, right?”
He grinned. “Close enough. I love you.”
“I love you too. Now kiss me.”
He rested his arms over my shoulders. He was still smiling. “With pleasure!”
He kissed me.
I moaned into the kiss, and pushed us so that I was lying on top of him on the bed. Yes, this was the life, and it was only just beginning.
B∞C
“You know,” I said to Blake with a grin as we lie in bed later that night. “We didn’t discuss kids. You do want them, don’t you?”
He nodded. “Of course!” he grinned up at me. “I’m looking forward to having them with you. I know we can’t conceive them, but that doesn’t mean we can’t try.” He raised his eyebrows up and down suggestively.
I playfully swatted him, and laughed. “I’m serious!”
“So am I!”
I rolled my eyes. “I mean, do you want a family with me one day?”
He gently stroked my cheek. “You know I do.”
I smiled. “How many do you want?”
He thought about it for a moment. “I’d say two at the most.”
I nodded. “I want one boy and one girl. How about you?”
“That sounds good. Which do you want first?”
I thought about it for a moment. “I want a girl first.”
He smiled. “Really? I want a boy. I thought you’d want a boy too so you could teach him to play football, and get him working out at a young age so he’s trim and fit like you.”
I smiled too. “A boy would be nice. I don’t know. After being around Phil’s daughter on the tour, it made me want a little girl. I think it would be fun to buy her dresses and be protective of her when she starts dating. I thought you’d want the girl so that you could share eyeliner and mascara with her.”
He gasped. “What are you insinuating? Are you still insisting that I’m the girl in our relationship?”
I laughed. “You said it; not me!”
“You’re going to pay for that,” he said, his eyes suddenly darkening.
I moaned. I knew that look all too well. “With our parents right down stairs?”
He shrugged. “Like I’ve said before, that’s never stopped us.”
“Well, we did already say our goodnights. We shouldn’t be bothered by my mom this time at least.”
“So, are you going to let me show you who the man in this relationship is?” He began nipping below my ear.
I closed my eyes. I knew I should say something about me always being the man, but right then, I really didn’t mind him being the man. “Show me,” I said instead.
Show me, he did. Married life was going to rock. I could tell already.
