The rink was deserted again. Bam shivered a little bit as he stood on the ice in his unfamiliar figure skates. They were lighter than his hockey ones. It was like wearing slippers compared to steel toed boots.
“Ville, I’m not too sure about this.” Bam tried to skate to where his friend was standing. He slipped, not used the light touch these things required. Ville reached out and caught him around the waist.
“You trust me, don’t you?”
“With my life.”
“Then don’t worry. You know what it is to skate. It’s like flying. And sometimes when you fly, you do fall. But I’ll be there to catch you.” Ville was moving, skating backwards, pulling Bam along with him.
“Promise?”
“I swear to God,” Ville smiled. And then he began to get down to business. It was time to show Bam the routine he had worked out.
**
When they were done, they walked hand and out of the rink. Ville kissed Bam sweetly on the forehead.
“Call you tonight?”
“Sounds great,” they began to walk their separate ways, not letting go of one another until the last possible second, their fingertips still reaching for one another as the distance between them stretched.
Bam went home to watch some cartoons and play video games. Saturdays were the best times to blank out his mind. Ville, on the other hand, went where he always went when he had something to talk about.
Hayley answered her door, hair wet from the shower.
“Ville!” she beamed and pounced on him with a huge hug.
“Hey, sweetheart, you’re looking pretty good.” He said with approval. Hayley just smiled and pulled him to the couch.
“So are you going to tell me what happened?” she demanded before they’d even sat down.
“A gentleman never kisses and tells.”
“Right, so you should be able to tell me.” He walloped his friend with the pillow as she giggled.
“It was really great.” He told her once she’d settled down. Hayley looked at Ville with loving, understanding eyes.
“It was his first time he’d done anything with another boy, but I made sure he liked it.”
“Good. You really deserve to be with someone who loves you, Ville.”
“He never said he loved me, Hayley Jillian.” He gave her a look. He hated it when she jumped to conclusions.
“Did he ever say he didn’t?” she gave him a wicked smile. Ville just shook his head at her. He was used to this.
“How about you, Hayley?” the smile dropped off her face and she looked away. She began to comb her hair nervously with her fingers.
“Have you heard from Mige?”
“No. I haven’t heard from him at all.” The girl allowed herself to look into the deep jade oceans that were her best friend’s eyes. “I think I really screwed up this time, Ville.”
“Oh, sweetheart.” He sighed. “I don’t think this can all be blamed on you. I don’t think this is all on him, either.”
“Then who?” she sounded so lost, it almost broke Ville’s heart. “Who takes the blame for this?”
“It takes two people to make a relationship.” He said softly, reaching out to comb her hair with his own fingers.
“But I screwed up. I shouldn’t have been dishonest.”
“No, you shouldn’t have.” He agreed. “But Mige shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions. And he shouldn’t try to change you. He needs to take you as you are, or not at all. Just like you shouldn’t go out of your way doing things that you know are going to bother him.”
“What am I going to do?”
“I don’t know.” He bent forward and kissed her forehead. “I wish I did know. I hate seeing you so upset.”
“I know,” she smiled at him then. “But I am so happy for you! Darling, you finally found him. You’ve finally found that boy you’ve always been looking for.”
“I suppose.” He smiled too, in spite of himself. “How’s Rake?”
“Rake?” she sighed. “Rake’s part of the problem.”
“Or is he the solution?”
“Oh, Ville, don’t say things like that.” She wrinkled her nose.
“You like him, don’t you?”
“Of course I like him. He’s kind, and funny, and smart, and sweet.” She ticked off his virtues on her fingers.
“But he’s not Mige,” Ville supplied.
“He’ll never be Mige. No one can but Mige.” She pulled her knees up to her chest and rested her chin on them.
“He was the first boy I ever slept with. He was the first boy I ever loved… Except for you, and that doesn’t count because you’re gay, and I always knew that. I love you so much differently than I ever loved him.”
“I know that.”
“I just don’t want to throw all of that away.”
“I’m not sure if it’s about throwing things away or moving on. There is a difference, you know.”
“I know,” she stood up then. “I need to get ready to go down to the hospital for volunteer.” She bent and kissed her friend on the cheek.
“I love you very much, Ville.”
“I love you, too. Hayley.” He saw himself out and jammed his hands into his pockets on the walk home.
