Jessica laughed as she watched Kelly spinning around the lobby with a broom, urging the patrons that were exiting the late night feature to sing with her. Luckily, the short Texan had been working there long enough that she no longer scared people when she did this.
"Kelly," Jessica called.
"Yea?" she asked, stopping right in front of her.
"You realize you're not cleaning the floor at all when you do that, right?"
"I'm supposed to be cleaning?"
Jessica shook her head, throwing a piece of popcorn at her.
"You're so picking that up," Kelly grinned, going back to her cover of "You Shook Me All Night Long".
Jessica laughed again as she closed down the registers, locking the money for the day manager to count the next morning as the final usher came out of the theaters.
"That's the last of them," he waved, before clocking out.
"Come on kid," Jessica smiled, wrapping an arm around Kelly's shoulders.
"But I'm not done yet."
"At this rate we'll be here till three in the morning. Just leave it."
"No, I meant, I still have another chorus to go."
"Come on," Jessica rolled her eyes.
"You're bringing me home, right?"
"No, Kelly, I'm gonna make you walk."
"Well, I didn't want to be presumptuous."
"I've taken you home nearly every night you've worked here since you started. We're past presumptuous."
"True," Kelly nodded as they got in the car. "I've told you thanks before, right?"
"Every time, Kell."
"Just making sure."
"It's nothing. Especially lately, that new girl has been doing my job for me."
"Carrie?"
"Yea, she's always dropping you off and picking you up."
"Jealous?" Kelly laughed.
"No, I'm just glad you made a new friend."
"Thanks, mom."
"Shut up," Jessica pushed her playfully.
"Speaking of Carrie, though, I asked her to come to Chili's with us tomorrow night. That's ok, right?"
"You tease me for looking out for you, but you ask my permission?"
"You know what I mean," she rolled her eyes.
"Of course it's fine, Kelly. She's gonna be bringing you, I'm guessing?"
"Yea."
"Well, good thing about her is, I'm saving a butt load on gas not having to drag you around everywhere," Jessica teased.
"Hey, I help out with gas money when I can."
"I know," she assured her, giving her shoulder a gentle squeeze. "So you think the new girl's ready for ranch and salsa?"
"Probably not," Kelly laughed, opening the car door as Jessica pulled up to a stop in front of her apartment complex. "Thanks Jebbie."
"Anytime. Now get some sleep, you have school tomorrow."
"Yes mom."
++++++++++++++++
"Hey, so guess what today is," Kelly beamed as the final school bell rang, and she walked with Carrie to her car.
"Friday?"
"Yea, but that's not it."
"The end of the week?" Carrie offered with a smile.
"Yea, but that's not it either."
"The beginning of the weekend?"
"Carrie, it's Chili's!"
"Oh, right, we're going to Chili's tonight. How could I have forgotten? I mean, you've only reminded me three times a day every day this week," she teased as they got into her car.
"Go on, laugh it up. You just don't know what you're missing yet."
"So, that means you don't have work today. What do you want to do till then?"
"You don't have anything?"
"Nope. Hey, my mom totally has a meeting this afternoon and won't be back until later. Want to go to my place?"
"You sure?"
"She made brownies yesterday."
"Then why are we still here?" Kelly grinned. "Let's go."
++++++++++
Carrie giggled as Kelly caught the small piece of brownie she tossed to her in her mouth.
"So, how's things with your mom?" Kelly asked after swallowing.
"Better. I mean, you haven't been here all week, so there's nothing for her to fuss about."
Kelly gave a forced laugh.
"Sorry," Carrie apologized.
"It's fine," Kelly replied. "So, rehearsals for the play starts up next week. You excited?"
"I'm looking forward to having something to do besides driving you around," she teased.
Kelly sighed, "Why do y'all insist on giving me a hard time about that? I'm saving up for my own car."
"I know...I know. I was just joking. Sore subject?"
"Money," she waved her hand, dismissing the topic.
"So, since I keep putting my foot in my mouth, how about you come up with something to talk about?"
"How's school going?" Kelly asked curiously. "I mean, I know you're doing well in all of your classes, but what about the people. Met anybody interesting?"
"Well, there is this one person."
"Hmm?"
"Yea, she's kinda short, and has this really thick accent, and is the most amazing singer I have ever heard, and she's kinda sitting right in front of me."
"Care," Kelly rolled her eyes. "I meant guys."
"I know," she laughed. "But, I mean, you know how high school guys are...they're so immature."
"True," Kelly nodded. "What about Stacey? Heard from her lately?"
"Um, not really. She's stopped me in the hall a couple times, but I just lied about having to go somewhere. I have to admit though, I am kinda curious."
"About what?"
"Her parties. I mean, I'm always hearing people talk about how amazing they are."
"You should go to one."
"Really? You don't think I'm stupid for wanting to?"
"Care," Kelly smiled. "I'm not like Stacey. I'm not gonna make your mind up for you about where you should go and who you should hang out with. If you want to see what they're like, you should go--make up your own mind whether they're awesome or not."
"Would you come with me? I mean, I now that's a lot to ask, but I'd be lost without you there," Carrie admitted. "I still don't know too many people here besides y'all."
Kelly sighed, eyeing her carefully, "Alright...I'll go. Next Saturday, I'm getting off of work early anyway. We can go after."
"Alright," Carrie nodded. "Thanks."
"Ah, I figure I owe you since you drag me around everywhere," she grinned, causing the taller blonde to laugh.
+++++++++
"Carrie Page Underwood, you drive way too slow sometimes," Kelly shook her head as they got out of the car in the Chili's parking lot.
"What do you mean? We're here early. And why did you just call me Carrie Page?"
"CPU, like a computer," Kelly grinned.
"And do I remind you of a computer or something?" Carrie asked curiously.
"No, not really," Kelly held the door open for her.
Carrie looked at her confusedly, "You're strange, you know that?"
"I could be called worse things I guess," she shrugged.
"You couldn't at least come up with something better than Page?"
"Prudence?" Kelly offered with a smirk.
"Says the virgin," Carrie teased.
"Whatever," she laughed, pushing her playfully as she led the way to their usual table. "So what is your middle name?"
"Marie."
"Should've known."
"Should've known what?" Jessica asked, smiling as the two girls slid into the booth facing her.
"That Carrie's middle name is Marie, I mean, it's so her."
"Should I be offended by that?" Carrie asked.
"Yea, I see what you mean," Jessica nodded, studying the Oklahoma native. "Clean cut. Simple. Nice."
"I am not simple," Carrie argued, making the two other girls laugh.
"We're just joking," Kelly assured her as she stood.
"Where are you going?"
"Wash my hands. I'll be right back. Don't worry. Jebbie won't hurt you," Kelly turned to her other friend. "Jebbie, don't hurt her."
"You never let me have any fun," Jessica smirked as the shorter girl walked away.
Carrie stared down at her hands that were folded at the table.
"You know, Kelly was telling the truth. I'm not gonna hurt you."
"I know," Carrie offered a small smile. "So...Jebbie, huh?"
"Yea," she laughed. "Don't ask, because I have no clue how they came up with that one."
"You've known Kelly for a while?"
"Since she started working at the movie theater a couple years ago," she shrugged. "I think Lyndsey's the one that's known her the longest. They've been friends since Kelly moved here. Then she met Ashley and Mary in about the seventh grade. And now you."
Carrie nodded, looking over her shoulder to where Kelly had stopped to talk to an elderly couple a few tables down.
"She's something else, huh?" Jessica asked, following her gaze.
"Some of the things that come out of her mouth sometimes," Carrie couldn't help but laugh.
"She's definitely one of those people that say whatever is on their mind, no matter what it sounds like, which is made so much more entertaining due to how ADD she is, because you never know what to expect."
"Y'all are so talking about me," Kelly grinned, sliding in next to Carrie again.
"Yea," Jessica nodded.
"You knew those people," Carrie asked, nodding to the couple she had been talking to.
"Um, no, I thought the lady was someone from church, but she's not. She's real sweet though. They have two kids and five grandkids. One of them is on this total firefighter kick."
Carrie and Jessica looked at each other and started laughing.
"What?" Kelly asked.
"Do random people always give you their life stories?" Carrie asked curiously.
"I don't know."
"Yes," Jessica replied. "I swear, she could get a tree to talk if given enough time."
++++++++++
"Ok," Kelly smiled. "First, you dip the chip into the salsa, then into the ranch."
"Why not the other way around?"
"Don't try to get fancy on your first time."
"But wouldn't it just be easier to mix the salsa and ranch together?"
"Whoa, whoa," Kelly put her hands up. "Now you're just talking crazy."
Carrie laughed, along with the rest of the girls that had finally arrived.
"Go slow," Kelly warned as Carrie reached forward with her chip. "Nice and easy."
"Would you quit? You're making me nervous."
Kelly laughed as Carrie took a bite.
"So...?"
"That's really, really good," Carrie nodded.
"You doubted me?"
"You know, for a second there, I did."
"Lesson learned?"
"Never doubt you."
"Amen," Kelly grinned as the waiter stopped at the table.
"So, what will y'all ladies be having today?" he smiled.
"Um, I'll have the chicken alfredo," Carrie replied. "It's grilled, right?"
"Yes, it is," he nodded.
"Please," Ashley rolled her eyes. "Fried chicken for her. She could use a little meat on her bones."
"Ash," Kelly fussed, noting the pink tinge to Carrie's cheeks. "Don't listen to her," she mumbled to Carrie under her breath.
"And you?" the waiter turned to her.
"Oh, I'm fine with just the chips and salsa, but can you bring me some more water?"
"Sure thing."
"Chips and salsa?" Carrie questioned.
"Care..." Kelly warned softly.
"But you've been going on and on all week about how much you couldn't wait to come here, and all you're gonna get is chips and salsa?"
Kelly sighed, staring down at the table.
Carrie turned to the other girl's confusedly. Both Mary and Lyndsey were shaking their heads as they looked at their menus.
"Kelly," Jessica said carefully. "Just order."
"I'm not hungry," Kelly replied.
Carrie heard Ashley mutter the word, "Stubborn."
"Kelly," Jessica said more firmly, causing the short blonde to look at her. "Just order whatever you want. I mean it."
"Fine, I'll have a hamburger...well done," she told the waiter tersely before closing her menu and resting her chin in her hand as she picked at the edge of the table.
Carrie nudged her leg with her knee beneath the table, "Hey you, you ok?"
"Not now, Care."
Carrie frowned as the waiter took their menus, walking away.
"So, this is fun," Mary remarked, looking around the booth.
+++++++++
Carrie looked to where Kelly had eaten her entire hamburger and nearly all her fries. "Not hungry, huh?"
Kelly pushed the plate away, "I'm gonna go wash my hands."
"Yea, me too," Ashley nodded, placing a twenty down on the table. "Pay for mine if the ticket comes."
"So, why do I have the feeling that I said something I shouldn't have?" Carrie asked, looking at the three remaining girls as Kelly and Ashley walked to the bathroom.
"You're fine," Lyndsey assured her as the waiter stopped in front of them.
"Are y'all ready for your tickets?" he asked.
"Yea," Jessica nodded.
"And will they all be separate?"
"Yea, except for hers," she replied, pointing to where Kelly had been sitting. "Put hers on mine."
"Sure thing," he smiled.
Carrie sighed, sinking in the booth some as she realized why Kelly hadn't wanted to order. She must've embarrassed the hell out of her.
"I screwed up, huh?" she asked as the waiter brought the tickets. She placed her money on hers and handed it back to him.
"Seriously, don't worry about it," Jessica replied, handing him the others'. "One of us would've said something if you hadn't. She feels bad about having us pay for a lot of stuff, but I mean, none of us mind. She'd do anything for us at the drop of a hat, so of course we have no problem helping her out."
Carrie frowned, still feeling guilty.
"Y'all ready?" Ashley asked as she and Kelly returned to the booth.
"Yep," Mary nodded, handing her, her change as they slid out.
"KC, you got a ride?"
"Yea, I'm with Carrie," she replied softly, allowing the taller blonde to lead the way out of the restaurant as they all said their good-byes.
"Kell," Carrie began as they got into the car.
"Yea?" she asked, shortly.
"Nothing."
++++++++++++
Kelly stopped as she opened the car door to get out in front of the apartment complex, "You coming?"
"Um, no, I think I'm just gonna head on home," Carrie replied, not meeting her eye.
"Don't be silly," Kelly sighed. "Come on."
Carrie looked at her apologetically.
"Come on," she nodded.
Carrie got out of the car, following her up to their apartment and inside.
"Hey Carrie," Jeanne smiled warmly from where she sat next to Jimmy on the sofa, watching television.
"Hi Mr. and Mrs. Taylor, thanks for letting me stay here tonight."
"You're welcome here, anytime," Jimmy replied.
She nodded before following Kelly into her room.
"I'm gonna go take a shower in my mom's bathroom," Kelly said, gathering clothes to sleep in. "You can use mine."
+++++++++
Carrie lay on her back on the bed after having taken a shower, waiting for Kelly to return from hers, trying to figure out how to fix things between them. The shorter girl didn't seem angry with her, just a bit hurt, which had never been her intention.
Carrie was cut off guard by the lights switching off, and the door closing. She hadn't noticed Kelly walking in, but she felt her climbing up from the foot of the bed, taking her normal place between Carrie and the wall.
"It's not that late," Carrie remarked, wondering why they were going to bed. She heard Kelly take a shaky breath beside her, and she understood the need for darkness.
"I...I hate the fact that we're poor," Kelly confided in a whisper. Her voice was thin as she tried to keep it from showing any emotion.
"I'm sorry for pushing you earlier," Carrie replied.
"Don't be. I shouldn't be ashamed of who I am. My parents work hard to give me what I have."
"There's nothing wrong with wanting more out of life," she assured her softly.
"Sometimes I just feel as if I'm selfish. I mean, I know there are so many people so much worse off than me."
Carrie slid their hands together, not a hundred percent sure, but pretty certain that she had started to cry, "You are anything but selfish. Trust me on that one."
"One day I'm gonna be a hugely successful singer."
"I know."
"The first thing I'm gonna do is buy my mom a house and get her out of this dump."
Carrie nodded, "In Texas?"
"Um, no, in North Carolina. That's where all her family is."
Carrie shifted nervously for a second, "Kell?"
"Yea?"
"You know I don't give a hoot whether you have a million dollars or just one, right?"
Kelly gave her hand a gentle squeeze, "I know...so I guess now all I need now is a dollar, and I'll be good."
Carrie laughed softly with her.
Kelly sniffed as Carrie's thumb ran over hand comfortingly.
"Come here a sec," Carrie said, tugging on her hand.
Kelly scooted closer, turning on her side to face her.
Carrie brought a gentle hand up to the back of her head, pulling her down to kiss her forehead. She could see the curiosity in her eyes as she let her go, even in the dark.
"What was that for?"
"You seemed like you needed it," Carrie shrugged.
"Thanks," Kelly smiled, laying back on her back, closer than before.
