Does have some information that has taken me almost 10 years to work into this saga. Could be a better explanation…
Enjoy!
Joe stumbled into the kitchen, rubbing the blurriness of sleep from his eyes. The low murmur of voices drew his attention to the table. Rick, Gail, Lily and Phil glanced at him as he pulled a bottle toward him, taking large swallows before he grumbled an acknowledgment to them.
“I take it by your appearance that you didn’t sleep at all.” Phil commented as he raked his eyes over Joe.
“Why are you still here?” Joe asked.
Phil glanced at everyone before he answered. “We can’t leave yet. Not until this is all blows over.”
”It is over!” Joe shot back. “Get out of my house.” he grabbed another bottle and was about to leave when he stopped, turning back to them. “I want everybody out of here by sunrise.”
“Joe…” Rick called after him.
“By sunrise!”
Rick rose from the table and followed him down to the studio. He stopped the door just as Joe went to slam it shut. Leaving the door open, Rick stepped inside the room. Joe was punching buttons on the control board, stopping every few minutes to take long pulls from the bottle in his hand.
“You’ve been hitting that stuff pretty hard lately.” Rick commented.
“Shouldn’t you be upstairs packing?”
“Where should we go?”
“Home, back to California.”
“I haven’t lived there in 15 years.” Rick started. “We have to stay here…safety in numbers.”
”I told you it was over….go home Rick.”
“It’s not safe for us to lea….”
Joe slammed the bottle down and spun around. “What is it going to take for you to leave?”
”And what is it going to take for you to understand that he is still out there?” Rick’s voice steadily grew louder.
“Oh, I know he’s still out there…I’m reminded of it everyday.”
“Getting angry and shutting everyone out is not the…”
”What else would you have me do Rick…pretend nothing happened? Forget about it all and get on with my life?”
”You could stop being an ass and talk to some of us, we could help you.”
”I don’t want to talk about it! I’m sick of talking about it. It doesn’t go anywhere and doesn’t change anything. Thomas, Tracy and the others are still dead. Rick still isn’t here.”
Rick held his arm out, knowing his response was not the right one. “I’m right here.”
“You know who I’m fucking talking about!” Joe screamed at him and threw the bottle across the room.
Rick watched the blood drizzle down the wall, “That was brilliant, fine mess you made.” Keeping his voice low and even he continued. “Why don’t you smash the studio, tear it all up, get all the anger out. It might help you deal with the grief, help get you back in focus.” He swung his gaze back to Joe to see the last of amber eyes fading.
Rick plowed ahead, “Tell us what to do Joe, to help you, because frankly we’re all ready to lock you in a padded cell.”
“You won’t have to…” Joe laughed, spreading his arms out. “…I’m gone…already there. There…you happy. Now get out of my house...all of you.” He stabbed a button on the console. Music blared from the multiple speakers around the room, there for putting and end to their conversation.
Rick got the hint and left the room, closing the door behind him. Going back upstairs, he found everyone had moved to the living room. Falling heavily into the empty chair across from Phil with a deep sigh.
“I can guess that it didn’t go well?”
“Nope. He wants us to leave.”
”He has been saying that for weeks.” Gail held out a glass for Rick.
“I think Joe has finally cracked from the stress.” Rick said after taking a drink.
“Joseph has not cracked.” Nick told them from his place by the fire.
Phil stood up and approached him.“Then what would you call it?”
“Dealing with his anger, frustration...emptiness.”
“By taking it out on us, drinking him self into oblivion every night.”
“Each and every one of us is dealing with it in different ways.”
“Is anybody dealing it with like Joe?” Phil glanced around the room, then back at Nick. “How many bodies have you disposed of 10…12…? I have done 2. Did you know that he attacked Gail last week? If Scott and I hadn’t of reached them in time, he may have killed her. How many times has he done that to you?”
Nick quickly stood, coming within inches of Phil,“That is none of your business Philip.”
“I’m making it my business! Joe is out of control and needs help. If it keeps up the way it has, everybody arguing, it will tear this family apart.”
Nick had made his way to stand in front of the fireplace. He softly sat his stemmed glass on the mantel, grabbing the poker to stoke the fire, sending blazing embers upward. “Are you finished?”
“No!” Phil yelled. “I want to know what happened to the arrogant sonofabitch that we first met. The one that let nothing get in his way of what he wants, would kill anybody to get it. But instead, he’s in here, cowering in some corner, like a scared little bug. While that man is out there cutting us down one by one.”
Nick stared at him for a moment. “Which one do you want?”
“The arrogant sonaofbitch.” Everyone in the room said together.
Nick smiled in his arrogant way, then his eyes darted away from Phil toward the door to see Joe walk by. Brushing past him, he hurried out of the room.
“Joseph.” Nick called out just as he reached the front door.
Stilling his hand on the knob, Joe rolled his eyes and turned around.
“Maybe you should stay home tonight.”
“Why.”
“He might call. Its not safe out there for you either.”
“Yeah right.” Joe snorted.
“When he calls, if your not here…”
“Oh come on Nick. You really think he’s going to call after 54 days? What makes tonight any different?”
“There is a possibility that he will.”
“Oh right…just like the possibility the Elders will help us? It’s pointless to wait for that now.”
Stepping close to him, Nick glared hard. “Don’t make it necessary for me to use force to keep you here.”
Joe leaned forward, closing the gape even more, eyes glowing soft amber. “Don’t make me shove you through the wall with your empty threats.” With that, Joe spun on his heel and proceeded out the door. Nick quickly followed him, seeing him take to the air.
Glancing toward the shadows, Nick gave a slight wave of his hand, a guard stepped from the shadows. He took to the air in pursuit of Joe.
Phil was blocking his way as he turned to go back inside.
“You’re just going to let him go?”
”A guard is following him.” Nick replied pushing him out of the way, then disappeared down the hall.
Phil stood there staring out into the darkness, torn about following Joe or staying inside with the others. Sighing heavily he slowly closed the door and rejoined everyone.

The following week once again found them sitting around in the living room. Scott and Tiny were off to the side playing a lively game of chess. Phil, Rick and Gail were talking quietly among themselves as they played Scrabble. Every ones else was scattered around the house in small groups or sleeping. Nick was sitting by the fire, scanning an endless pile of documents that recently arrived about the rebuilding of the Foundation building. He didn’t give it a second thought as to the mounting cost of repairs and scribbled his signature on the latest totals. Setting the paper aside he rubbed the weariness from his eyes. Glancing around the room his eyes fell on the small group, listening to them talk.
“I don’t know Phil, he seems to be slipping further. He doesn’t respond to my advances or Evelyn’s anymore.”
Rick placed a few letters on the board, “I tried to engage him in a new bands music, he wanted nothing to do with it.”
“I found Amber crying last night, she just told me that Joe wouldn’t even speak to her, then shut her out.”
Phil played with a letter tile, “I think we are at a loss, we’ve tried every thing to keep him from slipping further.”
“I’ve only seen what Joe is going through once in my long life.” Nick interjected onto their conversation. Rubbing his hands on his thighs he continued, “A bond so strong between two vampires...if...if one dies, the other struggles to fill the soul shattering emptiness. Anthony couldn’t do that after Marissa died.”
“Who are Anthony and Marissa?”
Nick glanced at Gail, “I met them in 1418, in San Marino, Italy...” a slight smile spread across his lips at the fond memories. “Older vampires, they had a strong bond...we spent the better part of a hundred years together, traveling around Italy.”
“Did you have a sexual relationship with them?” Gail elbowed Phil.
“No, Mr. Collen, I did not.” Nick stared into his blood wine, memories flooding his mind of a time so long ago. “We were leaving a tavern...pub in the early morning hours, rode out to the cliffs, some...something spooked the horses, Marissa was thrown off, tumbled down the cliff to land in a thicket of brush. Even her vampire abilities couldn’t help her. By the time Anthony and I reached her, she was already dead from the many branches she landed on.”
“Where are you going with this story.” Rick asked what everyone was thinking.
“The bond we share. It was shattered between them. In the end, the emptiness, it drove Anthony mad, he ended his life one crisp spring morning.”
Phil turned more in his chair to face him, “I don’t understand. We all felt our bond with Thomas break, knew what it meant. Are you saying that Joe is slowing going mad from that.”
Nick slowly shook his head, “It’s the bond that he shares with Rick, it is unlike any you will ever come across. Many of us in the Community, older ones, The Elders, felt it, sensed it. Something that many of us haven’t felt in centuries.”
Tiny was nodding his head in agreement, “First time I met Savage, that infant vibration was there. When he brought Joe across…” Tiny whistled under his breath, “...it exploded into something incredible.”
“Indeed it did.” Nick frowned at the memory.
Phil narrowed his eyes when he saw his expression, “You knew about it?”
Nick was pouring him self more blood wine, “I was very aware of it.”
“But, I...I don’t feel that.” Phil remarked, confusion clearly in his words.
“You are young, so is everyone else, in time you will.” Tiny informed them.
“How is their bond different from the rest of us?”
Nick looked thoughtful a moment. “It...there isn’t...a bond like that...it is not just one, consists of many elements, factors...love, trust, chemical make-up in the brain, in DNA, its all there, twisting, turning, spiraling around like a faraway galaxy. It’s mind boggling, frustrating, exhilarating trying to figure it out over the centuries.” Nick’s breath caught in his throat.
“Sounds like your in love with this..this bond thingy.”
Nick smiled wanly at Phil, “I’m in love with the men only, that posse that ability between them.”
Rick scratched his chin in thought, “How do you know that ‘element’ is in Sav and Joe’s DNA?”
“I am a police detective, I investigated Sav’s disappearance the first time remember. I had access to both of their blood samples, had them analyzed.”
“Oh right, I remember now. But how do you know...how do you distinguish that element from all the other humans and vampires? DNA wasn’t even thought of in the 15th century.”
“Studies Mr. Collen, deep within the vampire Community, ones you only hear whispers about. With today’s technology, they were able to isolate those elements that haven’t shown up any where, in any human or vampire in many decades, until Sav and Joe.”
Phil leaned back on the couch trying to process what Nick was telling them, “Well, it definitely is hard to wrap your brain around something like that.”
“It also explains their deep connection going way back to when they first met.” Rick added.
“And why Joe is acting the way he is now. But, Sav isn’t dead, we all know that.”
“The emptiness is there, it may not be a final emptiness as with Thomas. The few times that Sav made his present known, its torture for Joe and his fragile mind.”
“Why bring up a story like this now and what you know about their bond?” Rick wanted to know.”What does any of that have to do with what is happening now?”
“The bond they share is very rare among vampires. Some of our kind spend their entire existence searching for it.”
“I mentioned that to Sav not to long ago, when we were on the beach at Phil’s house.” Tiny put in.
“And you think that is why this man has plotted such an elaborate plan to get this type of bond with Sav.”
Nick was slowly shaking his head, “No, he wants.…”
“Is that why you took him all those years ago?”
No one knew how long Joe had been standing just outside the door until he spoke. Heads snapped around to stare at him, his disheveled appearance belayed a tormented soul.
“Is it?” Joe repeated.
“No, it is not,” Nick looked down at his glass again. “I learned of that bond and where it was going shortly after I imprisoned Rick. I’m also confident that is not the reason he was taken this time.”
Joe learned on the door frame, “How can you be so sure?”
“His age. You told me you felt he was older then I. Wisdom comes with age, surely he knows he can not obtain a bond such as that from one that is already strongly established.
”But he can take it Nick,” Joe pushed away from the door frame.“He can kill Rick and send me spiraling into madness for which there will no returning from this time.” With that, Joe walked out. Every one heard him bumping around in the kitchen to retrieve a fresh bottle, then the back door close.
Nick stopped Phil from following him, “Give him some time alone. Well, alone as he can be outside with the guards close by.”
“What more can we do to help him?” Gail asked as she stood.
“Continuing what we are doing, closely watching him, distract him from thinking to hard about Sav, staying calm when he blows up in anger.”
Phil rubbed his chest, “Yeah, yeah we can do that, we have to, for how ever long it takes to bring Sav home.”
Nick stood up from his chair, “We can continue this discussion at a later time. I’m going to make my rounds with the guards before sunrise is upon us.”
