Elle’s apartment was clear on the other side of town, a little place that overlooked the whole Bay Area given its spot up in the hills. I didn’t want to follow Dave there, but I followed him anyway. I had to know what was happening over there and why Elle would want anything to do with him of all people, especially when she made no mention of him before. I recognized Dave’s car even from well down the block and I was more than willing to follow him all the way down to Los Angeles if that was what it took for me. I needed to find the truth, and I needed to find it soon enough as well.
He turned the corner, and I swore that the shadows had caught up to him, even though it was broad daylight. But I kept my eye on him whilst keeping an eye on the road before me: it felt as though I was driving along with the wind at my back and the sun on my head, like I was seeking out a hit on someone.
Even though I was following him, I couldn’t help but think about what I wanted to make for Alex later on.
Oh, to whip up some sufganiyot for that boy on the Festival of Lights. There had to be a recipe or two laying around because there was no way I could just make the donut holes without knowing how to do it right.
Dave turned up into the eastern hills, and I knew it was about to get juicy soon enough. I remained a few car lengths back away from him because, given it was late in the morning, I knew that he could spot me in his mirrors. I took my glimpse out my window to the street before me and something told me that I had come to a different neighborhood and a different city altogether: all the houses were quite elaborate and ornate, surrounded by tall spindly trees and pale brick walls lined with lush ivy. If I didn’t know better, I swore that I had made my way to the historic districts in either Sacramento or all the way over in Carson City. It made me wonder as to where Elle was moving if she lived in such a fancy neighborhood.
Dave turned another corner and I had a feeling that we were upon her place.
Indeed, when I eventually turned that corner as well, I spotted the apartment complex nestled back in the trees, and I knew that I had to plan this out. No one was coming from behind so I backed up around the corner to remain out of sight, behind the bushes and the tall spruces that blocked my car out of sight.
I made a mental note to get started on the sufganiyot as soon as possible as I lingered back to the corner.
Though unfamiliar, this was the quieter part of town, where the city began to fade out to the outskirts and the hills, and thus, I could stay down there at the bushes on the corner for as long as I could barring that there was no fire there in the complex. I peeked through the bushes, which was a pain in the butt given I stayed in the car, but I could see the crown of Dave’s head in the parking lot, however.
I lowered my sunglasses down to the bridge of my nose. I wished that Alex was there with me because despite the few extra pounds on his little body, I knew that he would think of something to get us up there to her front step without making much of a ruckus.
She never told me which apartment she lived in, and Dave certainly never made note of it to either me or Alex, but it was a nice enough day that I could listen and zero in on whatever piqued my interest anywhere in there from the corners of the building. Once I saw him go into the complex, I knew that was my cue.
The omelette that I had made earlier was going to stick to my ribs with no problem, but I worried about feeling hungry again at any given point during my sneaking and snooping around there at the complex. I climbed out and gently closed the car door to keep the noise at bay: I ducked over to the driveway and I kept my head down. It was a two-story complex of white stucco and brick, such that it wouldn’t look out of place over in New York; but nevertheless, I had to make sure that no one was looking out of the windows up above. As far as I knew, she lived upstairs and I felt as though I was breaking a code of some sort by sneaking onto the property. A code of conduct, one that told me to feed my little Guinea pig all that he so desired without question. I may have desired it myself but I wasn’t going to be blindly following it, especially not with Dave here and especially not with John having given us what for, either.
Add to this, I had to keep things on the down low lest he catch me there. I remained on my toes even though the heavy full feeling in my stomach began to weigh me down as I moved along the parking lot to the front step of the apartment complex.
The heavy door remained slightly ajar with the draft from within the building, but it was ajar enough to where I could hear their voices from within there. I held still by the door frame so they wouldn’t see me: it sounded as though they were downstairs, which would make it a hell of a lot easier on me. I recognized Elle’s laughter at the far end of the main hallway there.
What would Alex do.
I couldn’t stop thinking about his little potbelly and the way it rested on his belt. So chubby and handsome, and he was so soft and yet I could tell he was still very strong and powerful up in that brain of his. I thought of holding him down to the chair and hand feeding him some sufganiyot for Hanukkah until he popped the button on his pants and his belly was very full and quite round. Beautiful slender body made even more lush and gorgeous by the kiss of his heritage.
But I had to focus.
He would probably sneak around the side of the building and listen in to where she lived and where her window looked out to the courtyard.
I took a peek through the opening between the door and the threshold, and indeed, there was Dave at the far end of the hallway. If there was no window, I had to switch to plan B.
I kept up on the toes of my white sneakers all the way over to the edge of the building, and I ducked around the side. It was a nice day, a nice day despite the fact that winter was upon us and a last gasp of the fall before the throes of the cold pelted us; and as a result, people had their windows open to let in the cool breeze. I kept my head down and an ear open for their voices, that it until I finally caught Dave’s big jovial laughter right near the back of the building.
I crouched down, and I thought of the times that we were asked to do just that for a photoshoot all together: Lou and I would have the worst time trying to do it for a great length of time but Alex always stayed down as if he was born to squat like that. I knew that, even though I had made him a little bit chubby, he could still do that if he wanted to.
“Shall I give you some icing for your cake?” I heard Dave say.
“Please.” Elle sounded as though she had a mouthful of mashed potatoes right then.
The sound of that made me raise my eyebrows. As far as I knew, they were either genuinely making a cake or she had put a mouth guard inside of her teeth all because she and him had been talking for some time prior to then. She chuckled at something, and then he whispered something to her.
“Dave, you know that we’re alone, you don’t have to whisper anything to me,” she assured him.
“Well, I just think that because the window is open, the whole complex can hear us,” he told her.
“Believe me, you should hear some of the things that people in here do,” she said. “It’s actually one of the reasons why I’m moving: to get away from the complete and utter noise level over here.”
“And what’s the other reason?”
“Be closer to work, and also because I’m thinking of opening a bakery at some point in the future with my girlfriend.”
“You have a girlfriend?”
“Yeah. And she and I have things arranged to where we can allow another person in if they so wish.” The way she said that made me curious about what was about to take place in there.
“You know that I would enjoy that very much,” he assured her. “But I’m kind of with someone already.”
“Really? It’s a shame because… you would look so great with us. Two girls hanging off either one of your arms. I mean, you’re almost there, you have your finger on the button already all because of me.”
“She’s got Dave under her wing as well!” I whispered to myself. “I wonder who he’s fattening up now, too.”
“Well, I wouldn’t necessarily say that,” he pointed out. “But there is something, though. I do enjoy the thought of eating to my heart’s desire and I know that he enjoys it, too.”
“He?” I echoed him in a voice so low that I almost breathed it.
“What’s his name again?”
“John. He’s funny, too, because he’s the kind of guy that you wouldn’t think of him as being a little bit perverted but he is, though. And like me, he’s a drummer, too.”
I gaped at that. Of course!
“So, I guess I served you well,” Elle replied in a singsong voice. “And you were telling me about those two boys, too. That boy Eric who always comes to me for advice.”
“Oh, yeah, Eric and Alex? Yeah, they’re cool boys and… I don’t know, they seem ready to relish in it all.”
“Relish in what exactly?” I whispered to myself.
“They’re both… throwing themselves into it, aren’t they?” Elle chuckled at that.
“I guess you could say that because Alex has a nice porky potbelly going that sits right over his belt and Eric seems more than happy to contribute to it. It’s fun to watch them but it’s also kind of hilarious because they’re so clueless.”
I gaped at that.
“You also mentioned that Eric plans on serving him some things for Hanukkah?” Dave continued.
“Yeah, those donut holes,” Elle replied. “Hopefully, that’s all he’ll be making.” She laughed at that.
All the while, I thought I was doing us both some justice because it was what we both wanted, and it was what I wanted and I knew that I had opened up something in Alex with my giving him what he wanted to eat. But now I knew what was happening. It would also explain John’s behavior towards me and him as well. I wanted to tell Lou because he was my best friend and I could confide him no matter what, but I also wanted to know what exactly was going to happen from here on out.
Elle also told me about the sufganiyot and yet she only called them donut holes, which struck me as odd.
“So, you think they’re going to walk out of this with nothing else?” Dave asked her.
“Eric might,” she replied with glee. “Don’t know about Alex, though. He’ll be a nice fat pig before either of us are done.” She laughed again and I wondered what exactly she did to me to do this to him.
“And Eric doesn’t know?”
“Eric doesn’t know!” She kept on laughing, but then her laughter was muffled by something.
“I’ve heard enough,” I muttered under my breath, and I backed out of the bushes towards the wall on the other side of the courtyard. I needed to get back to Alex and tell him what was going on there. He and I needed to have a plan from thence forth.
Most of all, I had to think about what exactly it was that I had been doing. I liked Alex with a few pounds but I didn’t want him to lose the beautiful shape of his spindly little body, however.
