Chapter 24
I woke up the next morning, not feeling less empty inside.eareeared that a relationship between Nick and I would be doomed from the very beginning. Our lives were just too different but I had decided to at least give it a shot. I loved Nick too much to not try at least. I got up, got dressed and headed back to Kevin’s place. I was hoping they had found something on Joseph and I of course had some things to tell them as well.
Arriving back at Kevin’s place I was greeted with the smell of breakfast. I walked into the kitchen and found the gang sitting there, talking like everything was the way it had always been, not including the whole slayer deal. Laughter filled the room as AJ said something funny. I hadn’t heard what it was, but just the fact that everything seemed so normal made me smile from ear to ear. They still hadn’t noticed me standing in the doorway, so I decided to let them know I was there.
“ So…did you cook something for me Kev?” I asked smiling. They turned and greeted me and Kevin smiled at me, pulling out a chair for me to sit in,
“ Nope…but I can fix you something in a flash!” Finally I realized Kevin was wearing an apron and with the way he was talking he sorta reminded of a housewife from and old 1950’s sitcom. I started laughing uncontrollably. He looked at me, confusion crossing his features, and then he turned to the others,
“ What did I say?” he asked them, but no one could give him an answer. He turned back toward me and looked at me, waiting for an explanation. I pulled myself together and with tears still streaming down my face from laughing so hard I said between gasps,
“ It’s…It’s just…all you need it some curlers in your hair and your Lucy!” I said starting to laugh again. The others joined me in my laughing frenzy a except for Kevin who pretended to be hurt,
“ Well then…that’s it! No breakfast for you little missy!” He said. That made us all laugh even more and finally Kevin couldn’t keep a straight face longlonger either.
It felt great to be laughing like that again, but I knew there was still the issue of the vampire Joseph to be taken care of. I decided to wait till everyone was done eating his or her breakfast before mentioning it.
“ So…Not to spoil the mood or anything, but we have to talk about Joseph.” I said warily. I wasn’t exactly looking forward to it.
“ Yeah.” Kevin said sitting down next to me. “ Did you talk to Nick about it?”
Everyone looked at me as I nodded.
“ Joseph is his sire.” I said, “ Nick thought he was dead too, but we all know that isn’t the case.” They all looked at me in shock and waited for me to continue, “ He must have survived walking into the sun, ‘cause he’s over a thousand years old.” Kevin looked surprised to say the least. For a while no one said anything. None of us really knew what to say.
“ If he’s over a thousand years old he’s pretty strong right?” AJ asked looking between Kevin and I. We both nodded. “So he’s practically unbeatable.” He said solemnly. Again we nodded. All of a sudden Dani spoke up.
“ But you beat him Angel! You kicked his behind when you saved Nick!” They all looked at me, and I looked right back at them with nothing but determination on my face. It was true that I did beat Joseph, but it was highly unlikely that it was because of my strength, it was more likely that it was either dumb luck or because Joseph let me beat him. I leaned toward the ladder.
“ I did, but that doesn’t make him any less powerful!” I told them, “He probably let me win; he probably did it to test me or something.” They looked at me understandingly, “I doubt I could beat him again if I faced him alone, and Nick wont be able to fight Joseph and certainly not beat him. The blood they share prevents Nick from harming him.” Howie looked disgusted,
“ But it doesn’t prevent Joseph from hurting Nick right?” he asked. Suddenly a feeling of grief crept over me. I looked Howie in the eye,
“ No…No it doesn’t!” I let out a shaky breath as I closed my eyes, trying to push the feelings away. I had to stay focused.
“ Well, I say we help Angel and Nick kick the crap outta this guy!” AJ said.
“ No!” I sighed and spoke in a quieter voice, “ No, it’s too dangerous. You have no idea what this guy is capable of!”
“Angel you don’t seriously expect us to just sit around and wait for you to be killed by this guy do you?” Jess asked.
“ No, but I can’t let you guys get involved in this.”
“ Honey, we’re already involved!” Dani said, “ You’re our friend, that makes us involved.”
“ Great! Then it’s settled!” AJ said, staring at me, daring me to object. I knew it would be useless. If I refused to let them help, they’d just find some way to try and help me anyway. At least if I know where they are, I can protect them. I nodded, but I let my eyes show them that I wasn’t at all happy about it.
“ Okay!” Kevin said, trying to break the tension in the room a little, “All of you, go home. Go to sleep. You need the rest. We’ll meet baere ere at 7.” They all nodded in agreement and Kevin shooed them out of his apartment. When he returned to the kitchen he looked at me, “ It goes for you too. You need the rest more than any of us, this is gonna take all of your strength and energy.” I sighed and nodded. I got up from my chair and made my way back to my room. I was exhausted so as soon as my head hit the pillow I fell asleep.
