Few month later…
Darren dropped to his knees. Sweat pouring down his forehead. Thousands of people screaming his name. Some people shouted Daniel’s name, too. Daniel looked at the crowd and saw the same faces he saw the night before. Some faces he saw every day no matter where he went. Some faces were annoying him. Some were making him smile. He looked back at Darren and saw him getting up and leaving, ready for his curtain call. What a show! Daniel was ready to kill Darren. He saw the band shooting Darren dirty looks and even backing singers were slightly annoyed.
“Darreeennnn!!!” Daniel run after him calling his name but Darren didn’t turn around. “Darren, for God’s sake!”
Darren walked into the dressing room and slammed the door behind him.
Daniel opened the door and walked in, Darren standing by the wall and looking at him, his face void of any emotions. He didn’t seem to realise where and who he is.
Daniel locked the door behind him.
“What’s the fuck, Darren? What?” Daniel yelled, looking at motionless figure in front of him.
“Don’t yell at me, Jones!” Darren whispered back to him.
Daniel realised the whole arena must have heard him scream at Darren. He lowered his voice. “Tell me what the fuck happened?”
“Give me some space to breathe, Jones! Does everything always must have an explanation?”
“Changing the set in the middle of the show must have an explanation, Darren.”
“I didn’t feel like singing it,” Darren lowered his eyes. He was looking at Daniel’s shoes now.
“Whatever!” Daniel realised he’ll make Darren cry if he goes on. He sat down on a sofa and watched Darren standing by the wall. He still wasn’t moving.
“Let me be, Danny, let me be, just give me some space, I can’t do everythierfeerfect, I can’t do everything by the book. I’m just … I’m just different!”
“I know how different you are…”
“Then give me a fucking break!!!!” Darren screamed, suddenly his voice and his emotions were back.
Daniel looked at him and raised his eyebrows in surprise, “A break?”
A knock on the door.
“What?” they both yelled at the same time.
“It’s me,” Elena’s voice answered.
Darren walked over to the door and let her in.
Then like she wasn’t even there, he turned back to Daniel.
“Yes, a break. It’s not always about YOU.”
Daniel felt a cold shiver through his body. Didn’t sound like their usual fights and didn’t sound like Darren normally does when he’s upset.
“What do I have to do with anything, we are not talking about me!” he answered in a lowered voice. He didn’t want this to be a screaming argument. He didn’t want any arguments at all. He started it cause he had to make Darren understand he is not the only person on stage.
“You don’t have to get into my head every time I do something YOU think is wrong, or YOU think is out of line, or YOU think should be done different. Some times I just need to be left fucking alone with it!”
Failed. Whatever Daniel wanted to get across to Darren failed miserably.
Daniel got up and started getting his things together. He was used to Darren’s outbursts but this seemed different. He actually hurt him this time.
“Where do you think you are going?” Elena asked him, reminding them both about her presence. “You are supposed to do a little favour to yourself and meet some fans, it will take 10 minutes, it’s official and they are waiting.”
“Yeah sure,” Darren said in annoyed voice but still turned to the mirror to see how he looks. He run his hands through his hair and with a deep sigh addressed Daniel, “shall we?”
Daniel didn’t feel like leaving Darren alone NOW, when he had to face the fans and sign autographs and smile for pictures when the only thing he wanted to do was to be left alone. At least there Daniel had to be near. Then when it’s over he’ll take him home and let him be, leave him ALL alone if that’s what he wants.
Daniel nodded silently and they headed towards the door. Daniel tried to take a hold of Darren’s hand before they opened the door but Darren in one cold defined movement pushed his hand away. And then it happened… something broke in Daniel. He knew it wasn’t all perfect. He knew he wasn’t always right. Some times no one is right. But it just felt that this time Darren really means it. He pushed him away for real.
They walked out of the dressing room and while Darren and Elena turn to the right to the press room where the fans were waiting, Daniel turned to the left, to the exit.
“Daniel?” Elena shouted after him.
“Let’s just fuck it, shall we?” was Daniel’s reply as he quickly left the building through another exit that fans hadn’t discovered yet.
A thousand thoughts run through Daniel’s head on the way home. It wasn’t the end, was it? Is this really it?
He got out of the car and nearly screamed in shock.
“Megan, for fuck’s sake!” he yelled at a girl sitting on his doorstep.
“I knew you won’t do meet & greet. And you always sneak out through the back door, where am I supposed to see you, Daniel?” a pretty young blond explained, getting up and adjusting her skirt.
“Well you’ve seen me now, ok?” Daniel screamed, all the day’s stress suddenly building up and all his anger pouring out of him. He knew it wasn’t her fault. But he couldn’t help himself, “does it make you feel better you’ve seen me now in a shitty mood under rain coming home on my own after a shitty show? For fuck’s sake get a life, what do you want from me?”
He snapped back seeing her lips tremble softly. It was too dark outside but Daniel though he saw a tear running down her cheek. She was a sweet girl, just over the top some times… Pretty young girl… what is she doing here… what does she really want?
“Oh come on!” Daniel said, slowly lowering his tone. He desperately needed a drink.
Megan smiled a fragile shy smile, “I’m sorry, I am really sorry, I didn’t want to make you mad… I just wanted to see you…”
“You just have to understand that this is my home, if I am in a bad mood, I just am in a bad mood, I’m not on stage, I am home, and I am whatever I am today.”
“I’m sorry…” she repeated with ttlettle sob.
She looked so weak and vulnerable. Some strange despair in her eyes. Where has he seen such despair before?
Oh god Daniel Jones, what now?
“Jesus Christ… what am I to do with you?” Daniel whispered, slowly realizing stupidity of the situation.
“Please go home,” Daniel continued, “I’m worried about you out here at night, on your own, for god’s sake, please go home, where do you live? I’ll get you a cab, ok? I’ll pay for it.”
She just stared at him anowlyowly stepped away. Step by step. She crossed the street. Daniel went inside and slammed the door behind him. He needed a drink. Desperately. She sat down on the pavement across the street and Daniel could see her lonely figure through his living room windows.
30 minutes later there his doorbell rang. He rolled his eyes and just sipped on his beer. It couldn’t be true. It couldn’t be happening to him. He had visions of this nightmare of a day in front of his eyes while the doorbell continued to ring annoyingly. He screamed at Darren. Darren screamed at him. He walked out on him before they were supposed to go to that stupid meet and greet with fans. And now there’s that little girl ringing his doorbell in the middle of the night.
Suddenly he looked out of the window in shock. The girl was sitting on the pavement. The doorbell just rang the last time but she was sitting there, it seemed like she hasn’t moved since he saw her there half an hour ago. Daniel run to the door and threw it open. Darren had left. Daniel could still see his figure walking down the street already in the next block.
“Darren!” Daniel shouted as he run back inside to get his keys. He didn’t see them. 5 seconds. There were no keys around. 10 seconds. Fuck it. Daniel left the door open and ran after Darren shouting his name. He knew Darren needs him tonight and he just pushed him away big time. “Darreeeeennn!” Daniel screamed. He caught up with him quickly but Darren kept walking like he didn’t see or hear him.
“Darren,” Daniel tried to catch his breath, now walking by Darren’s side, “Darren, I’m sorry, I didn’t know it’s you… there was someone else by the door, you know, did you see that chick?”
Daniel tried to look in Darren’s face but he was turning away.
Finally Daniel jumped in front of him and stopped him, grabbing him by the shoulders.
“Stop, you goddamned fool!” he shouted in Darren face and finally made Darren look at him. He’s been crying. He must have rubbed his eyeliner or his mascara into his eyes accidentally cause his eyes looked unusually red.
