AN: I flipped a coin to decide about Hayley and Mige, lol. THIS IS THE LAST CHAPTER! THE END!
The weeks seemed to slip by, water between their fingers. They rehearsed every Saturday and Sunday in the empty skating rink. They worked hard. Ville pushed Bam to his very limit.
The last weekend before the competition, Bam slumped against his boyfriend on the benches. Ville smoothed his rumpled hair back from his forehead as Bam snuggled deeper under his arm.
“I’m tired,” he whined.
“You’ve been working hard.” Ville said approvingly. “You’ve gotten so much better.” Bam beamed. It wasn’t often the older boy gave praise, and so when he did, he new he’d really earned it.
“So next week, huh?”
“Yeah,” Ville kissed his cheek softly.
“You scared?”
“Not really. Are you?” he looked down at the blue eyed boy who shrugged.
“I’m scared like I was before a hockey game. It’s less about being really scared, I guess, and more just about being nervous. Because I really wanted to win those games, and I really want to do the best in this competition.” There was a pause.
“But I wanted to win those because I wanted the glory of it. I want to do well in this for you.” He added thoughtfully.
Ville stood up. He reached out both of his hands. He pulled the exhausted Bam up and pulled him tightly against his chest. He kissed him once, twice, three times on the mouth.
“You’re amazing.” He finally murmured,
resting his forehead against Bam’s, who smirked wickedly.
“About time you started to realize that.”
**
“So you’re coming then?” Hayley was cradling the phone between her ear and shoulder as she stirred her dinner on the stove.
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world!” she chirped.
“I’m asking Rake. And Mige,” there was the silence then. He could hear her moving on the other end, could hear her running water, putting another pot or pan on the stove.
“I don’t see why you wouldn’t.” her voice was measured, falsely calm. “They’re both your friends, aren’t they? Well, Mige is. But Rake is Bam’s friend, so there isn’t any reason for you not to invite them.”
“I wouldn’t if you said it made you uncomfortable.”
“I wouldn’t go if it did.” He heard her sigh.
“You’re still not any closer to making a choice in this, are you?”
“No, I’m not.” She told her best friend. He could almost feel her frustration and misery.
“Maybe you should make the choice not to make a choice.”
“What, string them along forever?” she snorted. “I’m not that time of girl.”
“No, no, not that.” Ville laughed. “I mean…
Don’t be with either one of them.”
“Not a bad idea.” She sounded grateful. “Listen, I have to get this. I’ll see you in school tomorrow, okay?”
“Love you,”
“Love you too, gay boy.”

She met Mige in the parking lot before the competition. She was leaning against her car, her coat pulled tightly around her. Mige saw once again what a beautiful girl she was. Hayley was wearing high heeled shoes, stocking, and a modest knee length skirt. She was shivering a little bit in the cool evening air.
“Hayley,” he sounded so happy to see her. Her heart twisted in her chest. Mige beamed as he walked over to her.
“God, you look so pretty tonight.”
“Thanks,” she felt herself blushing.
“I’m so happy you asked me to see you! There’s something I have to tell you.”
“There’s something I need to say, too.” Her voice wasn’t nearly as happy as his, and he seemed to notice. The smile melted off his face.
“What is it?”
“I’m not going to ask you back, Mige.” The words fell through the air like rocks.
“Why?”
“Because I’m not going to change. You don’t like a lot of the things that I do. That’s going to happen in any relationship. What can’t happen is the lack of trust.”
“I do trust you! I do!” he protested.
“You must not.” She disagreed. “Because you freaked out when you saw me sitting with Rake.”
“I thought---.” He knew then how lame it sounded. He tried to come up with something to say. Of course, there was nothing really to say in response. She was right.
“But you went behind my back.”
“Yeah, I did. And that was wrong of me. I lost your trust.”
“Don’t you want to earn it back?”
“No. I don’t want trust the way you have it. Mige, I’m going to be who I am, and I’m going to do what I do. And I need someone who can take me as I am. I’m not saying I’m perfect, because I’m not. Not at all. But I can’t… I just can’t be with someone who can’t take it.” He saw the tears in her eyes, heard the sincerity in her voice.
“I won’t anymore, Hayley. I swear I won’t.”
“Yes you will. You need another sort of girl. You know that.” She was right. He hated it, but oh God, was she right. He looked at her face.
“I love you.”
“I love you, too.” She opened her arms and he stepped into them, kissing her on the cheek. They held one another for a few minutes.
“You’ll always be one of my best friends.”

Bam tried to catch his breath, to still his heart. This was the last chance for him to back out. Last chance for him to say he was sorry to Ville and run like hell. He looked over to his side, saw Ville there.
The older boy reached out and took his hand. Bam knew at that moment there was no way he could turn away from this. He knew everyone was going to see him out on the ice, and he didn’t care. He could do it, as long as Ville was there with him.
The couple ahead of them finished their routine. He noted with jealousy how easily they moved. He was still having a hard time getting his movements to sync up with the music right.
“Are you ready?” his boyfriend whispered. Bam nodded.
“I’m ready.”
They skated out, hand in hand. He heard the gasps, heard the whispers about two boys. The nervousness bloomed again, and Bam squinted as he looked into the crowd.
Ape and Phil, sitting right in front, watching them with glowing eyes. Dunn and the boys, smiling and horsing around with one another. Hayley and Rake, sitting next to one another, leaning into each other.
And then his eyes locked with Ville’s. A smile lifted the corners of his mouth. Yes, he was going to be just fine. Their music started, drifting down over them from the speakers suspended from the ceiling.
If I don’t say this now,
I will surely break.
As I’m leaving,
The one I want to take.
Forget the urgency,
But hurry up and wait.
My heart has started to separate.
They skated around the rink, still holding hands. They wove in and out and around each other, never out of arms reach.
Ville spun around and around in a fast twirl as Bam skated a circle around him.
Oh, oh, oh,
Oh, oh, oh.
Be my baby.
Oh, oh, oh,
I’ll look after you.
Then they were holding hands, going in a circle. Bam lifted Ville in the air and then set him carefully back down. Lucky for him the Finn was so skinny; otherwise this would be really hard.
Ville skated backwards as Bam then twirled.
There now, steady love,
So few come and don’t go.
Will you won’t you be the one I always know?
When I’m losing my control the city spins around,
You’re the only one who knows,
The one who slows it down.
They were moving, gliding, flying across the rink. Bam’s muscles had taken control of him, were moving without him having to think about it. The only things that mattered were Ville and the music pouring down.
He’d even forgotten about the crowds. It was just like their early morning practice sessions, when they were all that existed in the whole world. Bam was smiling for no reason he could logically explain.
Oh, oh, oh.
Oh, oh, oh.
Be my baby.
Oh, oh, oh.
I’ll look after you.
They were clasped together in an embrace now as they went through the choreographed movements. The thin skirt left Ville shivering just a little bit, but once he was against Bam, it melted just a little bit.
He didn’t ever want this to stop. He wanted to be here, on the ice forever and ever, if it meant that Bam would always be looking at him with that glow in his eyes.
If there ever was a doubt,
My love she leans into me.
This most assuredly counts.
She says most assuredly.
They were nearing now the end of the routine. Bam dropped down on one knee, as they planned. Ville smiled. He wanted him to go down on one knee like that with a ring.
Oh God. The world was moving too fast, but he didn’t think he cared at all. He thought he could just speed up and go along with it.
Oh, oh, oh,
Be my baby.
I’ll look after you.
And then Ville was helping him up, so they stood side by side, equals. Forever. Together.
It was the most beautiful thing that Bam thought he had ever seen. Already he could not imagine his life without Ville in it.
It’s always have and never hold,
You’ve begun to feel like home.
What’s mine is yours,
To leave or take,
What’s mine is yours,
To make your own.
They finished then, and took a bow, hands clasped. And then Ville turned to Bam, whose blue eyes seemed to be peering deep into his soul.
The two did not hear April and Phil cheering, did not hear their friends applause and hoots and hollers. They could only hear the thump of one another’s hearts. They could only see one another.
The world ended and began in that moment as Bam leaned forward to kiss Ville.
Oh, oh, oh,
Oh, oh, oh.
Be my baby.
Oh, oh, oh.
