Lenny was sitting in her study, typing furiously away at her lap top. Bam wandered in, looking bored.
“Hi, baby.” he waved.
“Hi, Bam.” Lenny cringed on the inside. It was awful when he was bored. And she was right in the middle of something important in the story. If she lost her train of though now, she could ruin the whole story.
Bam quietly walked around the room for a few minutes while Lenny picked up the pace. Maybe she could get all of this out of her head before he really started to pester her.
There was a lot to look at in the room. The writer had taken a magic marker to the wall and written down quotes from her favorite books, movies, lyrics from songs, and other random bits of goodness. She also had pictures from her childhood taped to the walls, and a collage made from things she had torn from magazines. The pattern and reasoning only made sense to her, but if you stood far back enough from it, and let the lines blur, Bam thought it almost told a story.
When he got tired of staring at everything and trying to make things fit together, he meandered over to Lenny who was still typing as fast as her fingers would allow her.
“What are you doing?”
“Working,” she said, sounding shorter than she intended. Bam watched for a moment.
“What's the story about?”
“People doing stuff. It's another Day Walker book.”
“Ooh, tell me!” Bam demanded, clapping his hands like a child.
“You'll have to wait and buy the book like everybody else.” Lenny made a face and clicked the save button. Happily, she had gotten past the hardest part of the story, and could now focus on Bam.
“Why should I do that? Why do you think I'm dating you, your cooking skills?”
Lenny made a face and scooted over on her chair for Bam to come and sit next to her. He sat on her chair and was quiet. This worried the writer girl for a minute. Usually he came in full of things to talk about, but when he was quiet, he was really thinking about something that bothered him.
“I wish I was talented like you.”
“What do you mean?” Lenny crawled into his lap and wound her arms around his neck. He buried his face in her hair, feeling his “prickles” as Lenny called them, catching on the strands.
“I wish I could sit down and write a story. I wish I could think of interesting things to say.”
“But Bam--,” Lenny began.
“You AND Ville are so talented. He writes the most beautiful songs. I wish I could be like the two of you.” he bit his lower lip. Lenny didn't speak, waiting to see if there was anything else he wanted to say.
“Did you know, Bam, that I wish I could be like you?”
“How do you want to be like me?”
“I want to be brave, and strong. I want to be funny, I want to be so confident in myself that I don't care what anyone else things. I want to live my life like every day is a party.” Lenny's fingers twisted into his curls.
“You don't think you're any of those things?”
“I'm none of those things.” she whispered.
“Lenny, you're the strongest person I know. You came back to me, you gave me a second chance when you didn't have to. I can't think of one other person who could do that. Look at the things you write! They make me laugh out loud, babe.” he rubbed her back.
“And every day is a celebration as long as I have you in it with me.”
“Oh, Bam!” Lenny felt her face turning red. “You are creative,” she told him. “Look at the movie scripts. Look at Viva la Bam. Look at your pranks. You've just been using your genius for the slightly more evil.”
Bam laughed and stood up, still holding Helena.
“Let's go find Ville. I'm hungry and he's leaving the day after tomorrow.”
**
Lenny went to bed early that night, sensing that maybe Bam and Ville would like some time alone together. She never felt slighted when he came, knowing that she craved time alone with Holden when he came around.
Bam and Ville curled up on the couch to watch The Nightmare Before Christmas. Ville's long, delicate fingers were stroking the brown hair he had come to love so well. The skater found himself relaxing.
“So do you want to tell me just what you were thinking by giving Lenny that ring?”
Bam sighed. He knew this conversation was going to come up at one point or another. He turned his head on the Finn's chest, making sure his ear was directly over his heartbeat.
“I want to marry her, Willa. I want to keep her with me forever and ever, because I love her so very much. I have never loved anyone the way I love her. Every time I think about life without her, I get sad. So I thought if we got married...” he trailed off.
“But BamBam, why didn't you just ask her if she wanted to get married?”
“I wanted it to be a surprise.”
“Helena isn't the sort of girl to take that kind of surprise well. I think she really would have valued putting in her opinion. And how do you know what kind of ring she would have liked?”
“Lucky guess?” Bam said sheepishly.
Ville just shook his head.
“She loves you, Bam. She will marry you. It's just going to be on her
terms and not yours. I thought you knew that about her.”
“I do know that about her. Sometimes I just try to rush ahead of her. I'm willing to wait for her though. For as long as it takes.”
