"I’ve been here and back again;
It never answers anything .
Where was I when they handed out
The knowing you are loved?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Carrie lazily ran her hand up and down Kelly's arm as they lay there, both of them drifting back and forth between the dream world and the real one rather freely. She rested her chin on the top of Kelly's head as she curled up tighter. She felt Kelly jump, startled, in her arms as the Texan's cell phone rang. She must have been in the dream world, Carrie thought with a smile.
Kelly twitched her nose cutely as she pulled her phone out. She glanced at the text, sitting up quickly.
"I'm bored. Let's go do something."
"Kell?" Carrie asked, sitting up as well.
"You know, I've been thinking, and I'm still not sure about that song," she said, her eyes moving back and forth nervously.
"What's going on?" Carrie asked, worriedly.
"Or, maybe we should just ask Michael if he still feels like meeting up today. I mean, I know it's later than it was supposed to be, but you never know, right?"
"Kelly, please tell me what's wrong."
"I--I don't want to just lay here, doing nothing. We're wasting time," she said, going to stand, but Carrie grabbed her arm, tugging her back down to her knees.
"What are you talking about?" she questioned, trying to decipher the dozen or so emotions running through the hazel eyes that were looking at her pleadingly. "We're not wasting time. You need time to relax. I thought we were doing ok."
"Or maybe that meeting with Narvel?"
"Plea--" Carrie began, but stopped as the shine of the sun reflecting off of Kelly's phone that was still in the Texan's hand caught her eye. "Is that what this is about?" she asked. "Who just texted you?"
"What?" Kelly asked, feigning innocence.
"Kelly," Carrie frowned. "Who texted you?"
"It's nobody you know," she replied.
"Let me see," Carrie held out her hand.
Kelly tightened her grip on the phone.
"Kell," Carrie looked at her gently. "Please."
Kelly gave her the phone, looking away as Carrie read the message.
"Miss you baby. Hook up this weekend? Graham," Carrie read the text out loud. "Who's Graham?"
"My ex," Kelly admitted.
"The Never Again guy?" Carrie asked, immediately feeling protective of the girl kneeling before her.
"No, the one after that."
"He wants to get back together with you?" Carrie questioned, not entirely sure she wanted to know the answer.
Kelly shook her head, not able to meet Carrie's gaze.
"You sure? Cause this really sounds like a booty call, or booty text, or whatever."
"He's engaged," Kelly replied guiltily.
Carrie felt her stomach drop. She had a feeling this wasn't going to be a happy conversation, "Kell?"
She let out a disgusted laugh, "I always said I wouldn't be one of those girls."
Carrie closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. She opened them to find tears falling down Kelly's face. She reached out, pulling her onto her lap, wiping the tears away. "Please, tell me what's going on."
"I didn't know he was seeing someone else when he first called," she explained, looking down at where her hands were nervously fidgeting with the hem of Carrie's shirt. "I thought he wanted to get back together with me."
"And when was this?"
"A few months back," she sniffed.
"When did you find out that he was with somebody?" Carrie asked, pushing a curl behind Kelly's ear.
"About a month or so into it."
"And what did he say when you found out?" she asked patiently.
"That she, uh, that she didn't mean anything," Kelly replied, allowing Carrie to brush a tear off her cheek. "That he was just using her to get over me. That when he could trust me not to leave again, he'd dump her."
"But he's engaged Kell. That sounds like it means something," Carrie said gently.
"I know," she replied quickly. "And as soon as I found that out, I ended it. I mean, I've been through that, and I wouldn't wish it on any other girl."
"And he's still calling you?"
"He says he's not ready to let go, that he still loves me."
"And did...do you love him?"
Kelly shook her head, "No...to both."
Carrie let out a slight sigh of relief.
"I mean, there was a point that I really thought I did."
"But?"
"But I realized that it wasn't him, so much as the thought of having a him that I was in love with. You know, just the thought of always having someone there for me. Of having someone want me. Of just having someone to go home to and lay in their arms after a long day," she bit down hard on her bottom lip, fighting back more tears. "That was when we were dating though."
"Then what about these past few months?"
"I was just trying to find that feeling again."
"Even if you knew you weren't really feeling it, just an illusion of it?"
"Sometimes pretend is easier than reality," Kelly said softly.
Carrie swallowed the lump that was rising in her throat at that confession. "So, that's why you've been working yourself so hard?"
"I just figured that if I could keep my mind occupied with something else, anything else, then I wouldn't sink back into that."
Carrie nodded as she leaned back, laying down.
"What are you doing?" Kelly asked, still sitting on her lap.
Carrie hooked Kelly's elbows with her hands, pulling the Texan down on top of her. She wrapped her arms around her when she felt Kelly starting to shake as she looked into her eyes. "I'm laying with you."
Kelly felt the warm tears immediately forming in the corners of her eyes.
"If you ever," Carrie began, looking her dead in the eye, "ever need someone to be there for you and to hold you or whatever you need, you come to me, you here? Not him. You don't ever have to do that again. I promise you."
Kelly fell into the body beneath her as she buried her face in Carrie's neck. Carrie held her as close as possible, their legs tangling as Kelly gripped her tightly, unable to stop the tears that were burning a trail down Carrie's skin.
