"You awake?" Kelly asked softly.
"Yea," Carrie whispered.
"What time is it?"
"Around three."
"Couldn't sleep either?"
"No."
"What are you thinking about?"
Carrie let out a quiet laugh as she reached out, placing an arm around Kelly's back, pulling her closer, "Come on."
Kelly placed her head on the taller girl's shoulder, strangely aware of her arm that was around her and the fact that her hand was resting high on the side of her body.
"What's up?" Carrie asked curiously.
"Nothing. I'm just not a big sleeper."
"So I've noticed."
"I don't know, I guess I'm always afraid I'm gonna miss something, you know?"
"So, you hardly sleep at night, and completely pass out in class where you actually are missing something?"
"It made sense in my head," Kelly grumbled.
"I'm just teasing," Carrie smiled, patting her side.
Kelly felt her heart speed up nervously at the feeling of Carrie's fingers against her ribs. She bit her bottom lip, "So, um, why are you awake?"
"Just thinking."
"About what?"
"A lot of things."
"Like what?"
"My mom."
Kelly smiled, scooting even closer to her to where they were flush against one another, "What do you think she'd say if she saw us right now?"
Carrie laughed, tightening her arm around her, keeping her there, "I can about imagine."
Kelly turned over onto her side, propping her head up on her hand so she could look at the other girl, "Why do you think she doesn't like me?"
"Kell, I honestly have no clue how somebody could not like you."
"You think I came off too forward with the whole brownie thing?"
"No, you were nothing but sweet and polite. Don't let her bother you."
"You're letting her bother you," Kelly pointed out.
"Yea, well..."
"So what else were you thinking about?" she asked, realizing she didn't want to talk about it anymore.
"Busy week coming up."
"Yea, rehearsals start up, and then we got Stacey's party next weekend."
"Softball tryouts are Tuesday."
"You decided to try out?" Kelly smiled.
"Well, technically they already had try outs, but the coach agreed to let me go practice with them and maybe I'll be able to join," Carrie explained.
"I'm sure you'll do great."
"You've never seen me play."
Kelly laughed, "True. When you said they were?"
"Tuesday."
"I have work," she frowned slightly.
"That's ok," Carrie assured her. "In case I do suck, I don't want any witnesses."
"So what else is on your mind?"
"Nothing really. Just a bit nervous, I guess."
Kelly nodded.
"What about you?" Carrie asked, touching the Texan's stomach briefly. "What's going on in that crazy mind of yours?"
"How many licks do you think it really takes to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop?"
Carrie laughed loudly, and Kelly quickly covered her mouth with her hand.
"Shh," Kelly whispered through a giggle, keeping her hand there. "These walls are thin, you'll wake my parents."
"Sorry," she mumbled.
Kelly smiled, removing her hand, "Nerd."

"So today's Tuesday," Kelly noted as they sat in the cafeteria for lunch.
"Yep," Carrie nodded.
"What's Tuesday?" Lyndsey asked.
"The day before hump day," Mary replied.
"So does that make it hump day eve?" Ashley asked.
"Oh, Tuesday is a happy day."
"Y'all are sad," Kelly laughed shaking her head as she spun several spaghetti noodles around her fork. "But no, today Carrie's gonna try out for the softball team."
"Kell..." Carrie fussed.
"What? You are, aren't you?"
"I don't know anymore."
"Why not?"
"Yea, why not?" Lyndsey questioned. "I bet you'd make it. The team sucks."
"I don't know," Carrie shrugged. "I just don't think I want to do it anymore."
"Why not?" Kelly asked again.
Carrie looked her in the eyes before glancing at the door that was behind the short Texan. Kelly gave a slight nod as Carrie stood, "I'm not hungry y'all. I'll see y'all later."
The girls said a quick bye to her as she walked away.
"Hey Lyndz," Kelly began, watching as Carrie walked out the cafeteria.
"Yea?"
"What's your schedule at the theater today?"
"I have the late shift with Jebbie, why?"
"You wanna switch with me? I go right after school."
"Yea, sure," Lyndsey nodded.
"Thanks," Kelly smiled as she stood. "Later."

"So, what's up?" Kelly asked as she joined Carrie who was waiting outside of the cafeteria.
Carrie shrugged as she walked outside, following the shorter girl.
"So why don't you want to try out," Kelly questioned, motioning towards the field before them.
Carrie looked up at the softball field. She should've known this was where Kelly was leading them. "I don't know."
"Liar," Kelly smiled, following her into the dugout.
"You ever played?" Carrie asked, picking up a softball off the ground and tossing it to her softly.
"Nah," Kelly shook her head, catching it. "I'm more of a soccer girl. I also did basketball for a little bit, but I sucked, and then volleyball."
"You played volleyball?" she eyed her skeptically.
"It was middle school, before everybody had their growth spurts," Kelly rolled her eyes. "It didn't matter that I was short."
Carrie laughed, catching the ball as she tossed it back to her.
"You love it, huh?"
"Love what?"
"The game," Kelly nodded towards the field.
"What makes you say that?"
"The way your eyes lit up when you saw the ball on the ground. Kinda like they did when you learned that new song on the piano the other day."
"I do love it," Carrie agreed.
"Then why don't you want to play it?"
"My mom."
"Ahh," Kelly frowned. "She thinks it's gonna steal from you too?"
"Kell..."
"Just a joke," she shrugged. "Why doesn't she want you to play?"
"I don't know," Carrie replied, tossing the ball to her.
"Yea you do."
"She doesn't think it's the kind of people I should be hanging out with."
"Yea, because softball players tend to be a rough and rowdy crowd."
"She says it's because the girls who play softball are all gay."
"I'm gay."
Carrie dropped the ball as Kelly tossed it to her, "Huh? Y-you're what? I mean, you're...?"
Kelly laughed loudly, holding her side, "Oh my God, you should see your face."
Carrie forced a laughed, "Funny."
"It was just a joke, relax," Kelly grinned. "I'm not gay. But damn, could you imagine? I bet your mom would really hate me then."
"Probably," Carrie agreed.
"But Care, your mom...I'm sorry, but that's probably one of the dumbest things I've heard. That's like saying all male cheerleaders are gay."
"They're not?"
"No, one of my good guy friends is a male cheerleader. He loves it because he gets to grab girl's asses all day, and look up their skirts while holding them in the air."
"Hm," Carrie nodded. "You learn something new everyday."
"Care, don't listen to your mom. If you want to try out, you should totally try out."
"I'm kinda nervous," she admitted.
"Don't be. Lyndsey was telling the truth: the team sucks; trust me, I've seen them play."
Carrie bit her lip thoughtfully as she bent down to pick up the ball again.
"So...?" Kelly urged as Carrie tossed the ball to her.
"I'm gonna try out," Carrie smiled, catching it as Kelly tossed it back.
"Cool beans."
"Cool what?"
"Cool beans?"
"You're such a dork," Carrie shook her head, laughing.

Kelly smiled at a couple that joined her on the bleachers as the practice neared its end, "Hey y'all."
"Hey Kelly," the girl smiled as the guy nodded.
Kelly glanced back down at her math homework that she was working on. She put the numbers into her calculator, pressing enter. She scribbled down the answer onto her paper before looking back up. The coach had put Carrie at short stop while he hit around to everybody on the field. She watched as Carrie easily caught the ground ball he hit to her before throwing it to first base.
Kelly grinned before going back to her homework. About ten minutes later she heard the coach blow his whistle to signal the end of practice. She bit her lip, watching curiously as he waved Carrie over to talk to her privately. It was hard to tell what was going on, since Carrie's back was to her. She put her books back in her booksack, waiting anxiously.
The coach walked away from Carrie, and the Oklahoma native turned to catch Kelly's eye with a huge grin, giving her a thumbs up sign. Kelly smiled back, grabbing her stuff, and walking down the bleachers to meet her.
"Congratulations," Kelly said, wrapping her arms around her in a warm embrace as Carrie walked out of the dugout.
"Thanks," Carrie replied hugging her back before pulling away. "What happened to you having work?"
"I switched shifts with Lyndsey. That's ok, right? I figured you could use a little cheering section since you were nervous."
"Of course it's ok," Carrie smiled, wrapping an arm around her shoulder as she grabbed her own bags before walking to her car. "It meant a lot when I looked up and noticed you the first time."
"Good. I'm glad I could help. And I have to say, it was definitely worth it."
"How so?"
"You looked so cute out there," Kelly teased.
"Shut up," Carrie rolled her eyes, pushing her away playfully.
"No, I'm serious," Kelly laughed. "With your little short shorts, and your sleeves rolled up--total all-star."
Carrie watched her nervously as the Texan's eyes lit up, "What?"
"That's totally what I'm calling you now...All-star."
"Kell..."
"Nope, that's it...that's your nickname from now on."
"Then I get to call you baby," Carrie countered.
"I'm only a month younger than you," Kelly reminded.
"So? If I have to have a nickname, so do you."
Kelly scoffed.
"Come here, Baby," Carrie drew out the nickname as she wrapped her arm around Kelly's shoulders once more.
"You totally suck," Kelly mumbled.
+++++++
"You sure?" Carrie asked, eyeing Kelly carefully as they sat in her car in the driveway, Carrie's mom's car visible in the garage.
"It's no big deal," Kelly replied. "We're gonna be in your room the whole time right?"
"Yea," Carrie assured her.
"And I mean, it's not like we're gonna be here that long. I'm just gonna change, and finish up some homework before you bring me to work."
"Yea."
"Then it's no big deal," Kelly nodded, getting out of the car.
"I really didn't think she was gonna be here," Carrie repeated for the hundredth time, getting out as well and meeting her in front of the car.
"Care, it's fine. I mean, like you said the first time, since when do I care about what other people think? Your mom's entitled to her opinion of me...it's wrong, but she's still entitled to it."
"You are seriously the coolest person I know."
"I know," Kelly grinned, making her laugh as they walked to the front door and into the house.
"Mom! I'm home!" Carrie called out.
"In the kitchen!" was the reply as always.
"You ever watched that old movie The Stepford Wives?" Kelly asked.
"Never even heard of it," Carrie shook her head.
"It's from like the 70's. You should totally rent it. I think it'll explain a lot about your mom."
Carrie eyed her carefully before walking into the kitchen with the shorter girl right next to her, "Hey Mom."
"Hey...hunny," Kelly could hear the smile in Carole's voice faded as she turned around. "Hello, Kelly."
"Hey, Mrs. Underwood," she smiled.
"So, you're home later than normal, Carrie, what took you so long?" Carole asked, turning to her daughter.
"I had softball tryouts today, remember? We talked about it this morning," Carrie reminded.
"I thought we had agreed that it was best if you didn't play this year?"
"Not exactly."
"She's really good," Kelly cut in.
"I know she is," Carole nodded with a frown. "Kelly, I'm sorry, but this is a family matter, do you mind waiting in the living room?"
Kelly looked at her confusedly, "Why shouldn't she play? She's easily gonna be the best on the team...she obviously loves the game...she's definitely the best looking one out there, which not that that really matters, but it sure makes it a hell of a lot more interesting to watch."
Carrie's jaw dropped as she turned to the Texan who was smirking, gazing at her boldly. She had to fight back a smile, knowing that Kelly knew exactly what she was doing.
Carole's face was a deep shade of red as the two girls turned back to her, "I don't think it is any of your business how good looking my daughter is."
Kelly shrugged, "You'd have to be blind not to see that she's gorgeous. I mean, it's just an observation. There's nothing wrong with that."
Carrie could feel her cheeks burning as she blushed. "Kell..." she warned, not wanting her to push her luck too far.
"Yes, there is something wrong with that," Carole replied sternly.
"So, are you saying that you don't think she's gorgeous?" Kelly asked.
"No, of course not."
"Then why can you say it, but I can't?"
"Because I'm her mother."
"And I'm her friend," Kelly countered, her eyes narrowing. "And I think maybe, if she would hear the truth every now and then, she wouldn't be so dang shy and self-conscious."
"Kell, let's go," Carrie took her arm, pulling her out the kitchen, sensing that she was no longer just pushing her mom, but was really starting to grow upset.
Kelly turned around, leading the way up the stairs to Carrie's loft. She opened the door, allowing Carrie to walk in first before closing it behind them.
"Kelly?" Carrie tried to be stern, but couldn't hide the fact that the corners of her mouth were turning upwards as she turned to face her.
"Yea?" she asked, leaning against the door.
"Was that really necessary? After I told you how my mom felt about me joining the team, and why she felt that way, did you really have to go and make a comment like that?"
"Everything I said was the truth," Kelly replied nonchalantly. "Like I said before, I don't care what she thinks. Let her have the wrong opinion of me, so what?"
Carrie shook her head, "I know that, but you do realize that it's not going to make things easier for me, right?"
Kelly frowned, "Sorry."
"It's ok," Carrie laughed softly. "It was pretty funny to see her face when you made that comment about me being the best looking one."
Kelly studied her curiously, "Care, you do know that you're gorgeous, right?"
"Yea, yea," she rolled her eyes as she turned to walk to the sofa.
"No," Kelly took her arm, halting her as she stepped right in front of her, so she could look her straight in the eye. "I'm being dead honest right now. You are absolutely stunning, and I seriously don't think that you hear that nearly enough."
Carrie turned bright red as she smiled nervously.
Kelly giggled, reaching up, cradling her face in one hand while she kissed her cheek, "There. Now if you really want to piss your mom off one day, you can totally say I kissed you."
Carrie laughed, shaking her head, "You're such a dork."
"Takes one to know one," Kelly grinned before nodding towards the bathroom door. "I'm gonna go change."
