I've been caught up with March Madness, but I managed another chapter :)
No one knows for sure about Kelly and Carrie except for Jason and Jeanne. Obviously quite a few people think something is going on between them lol.
Ch 23
Carrie really wished that she would have taken Matt up on his offer to come with her and her mother to pick Kelly up at the airport. She had turned him down because she thought it was going to be just Kelly and Jason, so she had been slightly shocked when she had seen Ashley waiting at the baggage claim with the others. Carrie glanced in the rearview mirror to see how everyone was doing. “How’s everyone feel about going out to eat once you guys are settled?”
Kelly knew no one in the car wanted her to cook. “That would be nice. Jase?” She looked at her brother for some help with the conversation. He had really kept it from getting awkward when Carrie’s mother, Carole, had asked about their shows.
Jason could always eat so he didn’t see anything wrong with the proposition. “Yeah, so how we gonna do this? You guys going to drop us of and then come back in a couple hours? You know these two will need the time.” Jason flinched when Kelly hit his arm. “What?”
Ashley remained quiet, although she had spoken when Carrie or the girl’s mom had asked her a question. She just hoped that Carole hadn’t seen Kelly hit Jason. They really didn’t need to try to explain why Kelly was hitting Jason for suggesting that they separate.
Carole turned around in her seat, even though she thought Carrie shouldn’t have asked the Texans to go out after they had just gotten in. “Ashley, what about you? Would you like to get some dinner once y’all have had time to get your things put away?”
Ashley looked at Kelly and Jason in the seat in front of her, but of the two, only Jason was looking at her. “Dinner sounds good, Mrs. Underwood. Just need to get the luggage put away first.” She rolled her eyes when Jason let out a happy shout
Carrie was pleased that the conversation had managed to last all the way back to Kelly’s house. She glanced over to see that her mom was shaking her head. She didn’t know what to think since her mother had seemed genuinely happy to meet Kelly, Jason and Ashley. “Mom? You okay with waiting a couple hours?”
Carole didn’t have a problem with waiting. She wondered though if they were going to stay at Kelly’s for those two hours. “I’m fine with waiting, dear. I just wonder if maybe we shouldn’t go home and let them have a chance to be on their own for a little while?”
Kelly looked at the front of the Explorer, worried that Carrie might go home. “We don’t mind. We’re always over at each other’s places. It’s not problem.” Kelly happened to glance up and noticed Carrie smiling at her through the rearview mirror.
“As long as that’s okay with Jason and Ashley.” Carole looked at Carrie; she knew her daughter would understand her hesitation, even though Carrie’s eyes were on the road.
Jason piped up because he wanted the mother and daughter to hang around. He didn’t plan on unpacking, just tossing his clothes in the dirty laundry. “It’s more than okay, Mrs. Underwood.”
Ashley decided to make it unanimous, and said that she didn’t mind either. She didn’t want to cause any more problems between Kelly and herself; and it didn’t matter to her one way or another if Carrie and Carole stayed since she planned to wait for everyone in her room.
Carrie pulled up into the drive of Kelly’s house; grateful that they had all decided what to do before they got to the house. Her mother so would have taken her aside and tried to talk her out of staying. She turned the car off, and then hurried to get out before the others. She was still sure that her mom would try to corner her alone.
Kelly hopped down out of the car and followed Carrie to the back of the vehicle as the others got out of the car. “I missed you.” She grinned and ducked out of the way while Carrie opened the back of the car and grabbed her biggest bag.
“I missed you too.” Carrie shot a smile at Kelly as she pulled the bag out and set it on the ground. “Don’t you touch that bag. You’re supposed to be resting.”
“My voice, not my arms, Care.” Kelly leaned against the bag because she wanted to be closer to Carrie. “You’re mom’s nice.” She had been a little scared of meeting Carole, but the older woman had been nothing but nice and seemed genuinely interested in her music.
Jason squeezed past the two and lifted both of his suitcases out. “She’s awesome.” He carefully walked backwards so that he didn’t hit either girl with his luggage. “But maybe save the goo goo looks until you’re alone.” Jason laughed at the questioning look on Kelly’s face. “Much better.”
It didn’t take very long to sort the remaining bags out and get them into the house between the four younger people. Although, Kelly had tried to make Carrie give her big bag to Jason. Kelly shut the front door and leaned against as Jason ran up the stairs with his cases. “Mrs. Underwood, do you want something to drink?”
“Don’t worry, Kel, I’ve got it. Just get your bags upstairs.” Carrie smiled at her girlfriend for a second before she looked to see where her mother had gotten off to; it wasn’t normal for her mom not to answer when someone asked a question. Carrie frowned when she saw that her mom was talking to Ashley. She didn’t know if she could trust Ashley with her mom.
Kelly saw why Carrie was frowning and she wasn’t very pleased either. “Sure, Care, take the easy job. I’ll just carry all these bags.” She grinned and started to grab all three of her bags because she knew Carrie would stop her, and that would make Carrie forget about Ashley and Carole.
“No you don’t.” Carrie quickly crossed the room and took the biggest bag from Kelly. “Baby, you would never make it up the stairs with all of these.” Carrie shook her head and shouldered the heavy bag. She wouldn’t admit it, but she always wondered what Kelly packed that weighed so much. The brunette didn’t have all the outfit changes and shoes that she wore on stage…
Ashley couldn’t help but stare at Carrie. She didn’t know if Carrie was kidding or what, so she looked at Kelly. Of course, her best friend was rolling her eyes and mumbling about not being a baby.
“Ashley, dear?” Carole lightly touched the young woman’s arm to get her attention. Since she had arrived in town, all Carrie had done was talk about Kelly and Jason, and by extension, she had heard that Kelly and Ashley were fighting.
“Yes?” Ashley got over her shock because if Mrs. Underwood hadn’t thought that it was strange for Carrie to use that nickname with Kelly, then she really shouldn’t either. “I’m sorry, it’s just-”
Carole patted Ashley’s hand, and then she led the girl to a nearby chair. “Take a seat. There’s no need to be sorry. You’ve had a long flight after a busy weekend. I swear, I don’t know what gets into Carrie sometimes. Just because she can run around for so long without getting tired, she thinks everyone else can too.”
Ashley laughed at Mrs. Underwood’s response; it was such a mom thing to say. The answer made her miss Jeanne a little though, and Ashley quieted down because she would have liked to have seen Jeanne when Kelly went home. “Actually, it’s not new. Kelly does the same. If anything, I think Carrie’s gotten Kelly to slow down a little.”
Carole couldn’t imagine Kelly running herself ragged like Carrie did so often; however, she didn’t contradict the younger woman. “So tell me about yourself, Ashley. I’ve heard a lot about Kelly, and just a little about you and Jason.” Carole had loved spending the past couple of days with Carrie, but she wanted to learn more about her daughter’s new friends.

Carrie dropped the bag off to the side of Kelly’s doorway before she quickly turned around and kissed her girlfriend. She liked to pick Kelly up at the airport, but ever since they had begun to date, she had started to dislike airports because she couldn’t kiss Kelly when she first saw her. “I’ve so missed you.”
Kelly laughed quietly and let her bags fall to the ground so that she could hold Carrie. “I’ve missed you too, baby.” The entire weekend had been difficult after spending five solid days with Carrie, and there had been the added annoyance of not talking to Ashley but having to see the girl.
Carrie held Kelly around the hips as she let her forehead rest against Kelly’s. “I really wish we were by ourselves, or that we could at least go out to dinner on our own. I guess I didn’t think everything through when I decided to bring my mom out.”
“I’m glad you didn’t. I know how much you were missing her.” Kelly moved her head to Carrie’s shoulder and held the blonde closer. She did like Carole, however, the visit made her a little nervous. “Besides, it’s not like she’s moving here. It’s just for a few days, right?”
Carrie nodded her head, although she stopped when she felt the slight brush of Kelly’s hair against her cheek. She did not want to get caught making out with Kelly. Carrie sighed and held Kelly tighter; needing the proximity since she didn’t want to end up in a compromising position. “I’m so not loving that she’s here right now. I just want to hold you and sleep. When did I get so attached to holding you at night?” Carrie had always prided herself on being independent.
“Probably around the same time as me?” Kelly laughed and tilted her head back so that she could look at Carrie’s face. “I know you’re complaining, but you should see how you’re smiling. I know that it’s your mom.”
“I have to disagree, Kel. It’s all you.” Carrie grinned at Kelly before she snuck a quick kiss. “I have loved her being here. I got some good quality shopping in. Hey!”
Kelly rubbed Carrie’s butt where she had slapped it. “You’re such a dork. Are we being serious or not? Because I was being serious.”
Carrie pouted for a second until Kelly smiled. “We’re being serious, I guess.” She didn’t want to be serious. Things had finally started to feel right again, and she just wanted to relax in the awareness that everything was working out.
“Good. Because I want to tell you how glad I am that you’re working things out with your mom. Even though it means we can’t go to your place to be alone because of her.” Kelly had to stop and kiss Carrie. The blonde was just too cute. “When’s she leaving again?”
Carrie groaned at the reminder of how long she had to wait to get some alone time with her girlfriend. “A couple days. Don’t worry though, we’re going out tomorrow night, just you and me. I want to take you out and just let you have a nice evening away from everything.” Of course, she was hoping that she could also convince Kelly to make out with her in the car after said date.
Kelly didn’t want to say no, although she thought that she probably should. “Are you sure that’s a good idea with your mom in town? I don’t want to take you away from her. I don’t want to get her pissed off at me because she thought she was going to get you all to herself.” Kelly looked off to the side so that Carrie didn’t see how worried she was. “I want her to like me, Care.”
“Baby, she loves you. Did you not hear her asking about your shows? I think she talked to you more in the car than she did to me the first day she was here.” Carrie had to laugh at Kelly’s shy act. She didn’t want Kelly to be nervous about her mother’s visit at all. When Kelly barely chuckled at her joke, Carrie kissed softly along Kelly’s cheek and jaw. “Don’t worry, Kel. I swear to you that she already likes you. You should have seen how excited she was when we drove to the airport.”
“Yeah?” Kelly wasn’t sure that she believed Carrie. Sure, Carole liked her now, but if the older woman found out about them, or if the woman just decided she didn’t like her… Kelly seriously wondered who Carrie would choose.
Carrie eyes Kelly’s lips when the shorter girl finally turned enough to look at her. “Yeah. Apparently, I just can’t stop myself from talking about you. She was all like: “So what’s Kelly been up to. Have her shows been going as planned?” It was so cute.” Carrie grinned when she finally got a smile from Kelly. “Then I told her about our vacation, and she couldn’t stop asking me questions about you.”
Kelly didn’t know what to say to Carrie. She didn’t want to make Carrie second guess the decision to bring Carole out, but it seemed a little strange that Carrie’s mom was so interested in her. “So she thinks we’re good friends?” She stared into Carrie’s eyes, some twisted part of her mind wanted Carrie to say no. The smart part of her brain hoped Carrie said yes.
“Very good friends.” It didn’t hit Carrie until Kelly looked away, that Kelly might have expected her to say something else to her mother. The lack of eye contact just reminded her of how she had chickened out when she had tried to tell Matt. “I’m going to tell her, baby, just not now. I want to get everything straightened out with my family. I know it doesn’t seem fair since everyone you love knows, or most everyone anyway, but-”
Kelly interrupted Carrie with a kiss. She didn’t want to hear Carrie’s reasons for not telling Carole, or Matt, of even Tommy. “Don’t get upset about it, Care. I don’t want to push you. If you had told her, I’d probably be hiding under the bed, so don’t even worry about telling anyone. Just…” Kelly lifted one of her hands up and pushed back some of Carrie’s hair because she wanted the contact. “Just promise me that we are really going to go out on that date tomorrow.”
Carrie wanted to kiss Kelly, but she held back. She knew she had been extremely affection since they had gotten to the room, and she didn’t want Kelly to think that she wasn’t taking the conversation, or them, seriously. “We will. Believe me, the only way I’m gonna get through dinner is because I plan on sitting right next to you. I don’t know what I’m gonna do tonight.”
Kelly laughed that Carrie was back to thinking about sleep. “Why are we still talking? I think we have like an hour left before we have to get ready to go to dinner. You. Bed. I’m gonna lock the door.” She lightly pushed Carrie in the direction of her bed, and then she jogged to the door and locked it. Kelly refused to get stuck in a dark place because of her fight with Ashley. She knew what Carrie was going through to be with her, and she wasn’t going to mess anything up.
Carrie bounced onto the bed, and then crawled up it until she could lay her head on the pillows. “Hurry or I might decide that I’d rather catch a nap with you than make out!” She was lying. Carrie just loved to see Kelly’s silly smile and hear the other girl joke back.
“Whatever, Underwood.” Kelly took a running leap at the bed and laughed when she landed on Carrie’s legs. “You know you can’t resist a make out session with me. Hell, I’m surprised you didn’t toss my ass on the bed when we first came in. You’re always tossing me-” Kelly smiled into their kiss, not at all surprised with the way Carrie had chosen to end their kidding.
