Life Goes On(pt24)
Sav stretched his arm out across the bed and quickly snatched it back. The new growth of skin pulling tight, causing a burning sensation. He rose up and looked in the bed beside him. Half expecting Joe to still be there, but he wasn’t. Sav looked down at his ring. ‘Maybe it did make a gape between us after all. More times than not he has stayed with me when I was hurt until I woke.’ Sav dropped his head down, then rolled over. Raising his head again he realized he was on a plane. The hum of the engines told him they were in the air and it was dark outside. He saw the bottle in the holder on the table and slid across the bed for it. After drinking some of it down. He got up and found some clothes lying over the chair. He dressed and left the room.
Phil looked up from his reading when he came out. “Hey Sav. How do you feel?”
“I’m ok, skin is a little tight, not to much pain.”
“That’s good. Did you eat?”
“Yeah.” His voice low. Gail, Rick, and Mal were asleep as he past them. He stopped and looked down at Kelsey, softly touching her cheek. “How is she?”
“She’s doing good. Nick gave her some more sedatives, so she could rest.”
Sav sat across from him in the tiny booth. “We’re on the way to Ireland ?”
”Yes. You didn’t even wake up when Nick carried you to the car, then the plane.”
“I was wondering how I got here.”
Phil stood up and retrieved a bottle and glass for him, poured some and pushed the glass toward him. “Did you and Joe have a fight?”
“No. Why do you ask?”
“He’s on the other plane. The two of you always travel together, no matter what. Even when you’ve had a fight or argued.”
“Not this time.”
Phil regarded him a few minutes before asking his next question. “You told him didn’t you?”
“Told him what?”
”About Amber.”
“How did you know about that?”
“Thomas has a big mouth like his dad. Everyone saw you together at the Ball, even Joe. His action weren’t because you were kissing Amber, he was going after Nick. Then the rest of us reacted and went after Nick.
“Yeah and all of that is why Vivian is dead now. You want to know something else? I told Joe last week that I was leaving. He begged me to stay until after the Ball.”
”Because of your feelings for Amber?”
”Yes. I knew if I stayed. I would take….Joe was going to be hurt either way. I know he offered his blood for me to heal, but he’s still mad.”
“Why did you stay on the beach anyway when you knew the sun would be up soon?”
Sav shrugged his shoulders. “Maybe to burn the thoughts of Amber from my mind, Vivian’s death.”
“That was the wrong way to go about it. You’re lucky that I woke up when I did and found you. So you weren’t trying to kill yourself again.”
“No.” Sav shook his head.
“Not a ploy to get everyone’s attention?”
“No.” Sav almost shouted. He glanced around to make sure he hadn’t woken the others. Leaning over the table closer to Phil, his arms folded over the top. “I fell asleep. The past few days have been really rough…no make that weeks. Nick has been hounding me, taunting me like he did 30 years ago. Wanting me to make a mistake, just one little mistake where Amber is concerned. And I did, he knew I would.”
”I didn’t notice Nick doing that. None of us did.”
“He didn’t want you to see.” Sav looking down at his ring and began to twist it around his finger. “And now that Joe knows the truth…of all the things I’ve done to him in the past. I don’t think he’ll forgive me for this one. And to top all of that off, I’m still struggling with the guilt about Vivian.”
Phil reached across the table, placing his hand over Sav’s. “He didn’t blame you, it’s wasn’t your fault. Kelsey told Gail and I what Vivian said. I have to agree with him.”
”I know. I tell myself that, but it’s still hard. You have no idea how much my mind is in turmoil over all of this.”
”Well, you could bring me across, then I could taste it in your blood.”
Sav looked up at him. Phil was smiling about what he said. “It would probably send you reeling from its intensity.”
“So you will still do it for me?”
“Whenever you’re ready I will.”
Phil squeezed his hand and leaned back.
Sav was still fiddling with the ring. “Phil could you do me a favor?”
“Sure, if I can.”
“Joe will probably never speak to me again…” he slipped the ring from his finger. “…I gave him the other one to match this one….” He slid it across the table. “…could you give this to him for me. And tell him…tell him I will always love him…forever.” Sav quickly rose from the table and disappeared back into the room.
Phil stared down at the ring. He didn’t get the chance to protest what Sav had asked him to because he left so fast. Sav would ignore him if he went to the door and tried to give it back. Then tell him to give it to Joe himself, since he gave it to him in the first place. ‘I’ll do it once we land. Phil stuck it on his finger. I should try and get some sleep myself.’ He got up and stretched out behind Gail on the little bed that would fold out of one of the couches on the plane. Taking a deep breath he tried not to think of the coming days.

The planes landed in Northern Ireland later in the day. It’s exhausted passengers disembarking to head for the hotel that had been reserved for them. Everyone agreed to meet up for dinner and go over last minute details for the funeral. Phil tried to talk Sav into taking the ring back and giving it to Joe, but he wouldn’t. Once they reached the hotel he locked himself in his room and stayed there. He didn’t show up for dinner and Joe didn’t ask where he was. Phil decided to wait until after the funeral to talk to Joe and give him the ring.
Half way through dinner, Nick excused himself and went up to Sav’s room. He stood there knocking for 10 minutes and Sav never came to the door. He went back downstairs and asked if he could have a key to the room. Swiping the keycard Nick opened the door and went in. He searched the room and Sav wasn’t there. Swearing under his breath he rejoined them at dinner.
“Mr. Elliott do you know of Rick’s where about’s?”
“No.” Joe replied.
Nick didn’t like the tone in his voice. He sat up straighter and glared at Joe. “So he’s blocking you too?”
”Has been for a few days now.”
“Is there a problem between the two of you?” Nick asked.
“Yeah Nick there is. Her name is Amber.”
“So he has told you then?”
“He was man enough to tell me. That’s more than I can say for you Nick because you already knew.”
Everyone turned their eyes to Nick waiting for his response.
“Did you know he was leaving too?” Joe asked.
“Why is he still leaving Daddy?” Amber shot a worried look at him.
“Ask your boyfriend.” Joe smirked.
“We will talk about it later…in private.” Nick told her.
“Why not now? Everybody already knows.”
Nick stared down his nose in his arrogant way at Joe, daring him to say it, tell her why.
Joe glared back at him with defiance. “Because of you.”
Nick stood up slowly, his eyes never leaving Joe’s. “Well Mr. Elliott you have given me no choice but to speak with Amber…alone.”
“Just like you didn’t give us any choice years ago.”
“If everyone will excuse us….Amber.” Nick broke the heated gaze from Joe and held his hand out to Amber.
Joe dropped his head as Amber glanced at him. She tossed her napkin on the table. Taking Nick’s hand she told everyone good night and followed him out.
“I know everyone is tense and upset…” Mal started. “Joe, lets not add to the situation. Being angry at everyone is not going to change anything.”
”I’m not angry. Upset, hurt, close to tears yes…but not angry.”
“We can be there for each other, just like we always have been.” Rick added and clasped Kelsey hand.
“Through thick and thin, after all we are the Lep family.” Thomas said.
Everyone agreed to that.
Phil had been watching Joe all evening, something was different about him. It wasn’t about Amber, but something else. Maybe it was because of Sav leaving again. He dug in his pocket, then glanced at him.
“Joe…um…I talked to Sav on the plane. He filled me in on what the two of you talked about on the beach and….um….” he leaned across the table and placed the ring in front of him. “…Sav…he uh….wanted me to give to you.”
Joe was taken back as he stared at the ring. A symbol of their love for each other. One that Sav swore he would never take off and Joe told him the same.
“Why?” was all he could manage to say.
“He thinks you hate him now that you know about how he feels for Amber. And….and you don’t want to be with him like before.”
Joe kept staring at the ring, not able to give voice to his words running through his mind. Underneath the table his fingers played with his ring. Slipping it off, it took every ounce of strength he had to lay his beside it.
Everyone stared at him in shock, not believing what they were seeing.
Joe rose from the table. “Well I guess it’s over between us then.” He started to leave and was a few feet away when Phil called out to him.
“Joe…he did have one more thing to say.”
Joe stopped and slightly turned his head back.
“He told me to tell you that he will always love you….forever.”
Joe acknowledged his words with a small nod. He continued out the door, hiding the tears that trickled down his face from the other patrons in the restaurant. He heard Thomas calling out to him not to leave.
