Everlasting Love(Pt25)
Two Months Later…
Evelyn slowly opened her eyes, stretching lazily and turning on her side to find Joe’s side of the bed empty. She glanced at the open balcony doors, to see the vestiges of early morning sun dancing across the sky.
Sitting up Evelyn grabbed her robe from the foot of the bed and slipped in on, pulling it tight around her from the chill in the room. The sore muscles in her legs a reminder of last night. ‘I’m not that young anymore, my body can’t take the aggressiveness Joe showed last night.’
Evelyn stood in the doorway, staring at Joe’s profile as he leaned against the railing. So much had happened in the past few months, letting her mind wonder over those months. Evelyn had noticed, along with everyone, that Joe was slowly, but surely slipping into depression, as was always the case when Sav was away for this long. Nick would goad him into shouting matches, Joe doing most of the yelling, while Nick arrogantly pushed him to the breaking point several times. Nick wound up with many a bloodied lip, but never struck back at him. A few times Joe and Nick would leave the house and not return until close to daylight.
The last time it happened over two weeks ago, Evelyn confronted him as he slipped in bed beside her. Almost demanding where he had been, something she had rarely done in their long relationship. Evelyn was shocked and speechless when Joe told her in a calm, tired voice. ‘Fucking Nick.’ No explanation as to why he was all of a sudden, after 40 or so years sleeping with Nick. And she didn’t push the subject with him.
Other times Joe would tell her that he was going for a walk with Amber, spending many hours away from the house and its memories of Sav. They worked on their tense and broken, father, daughter relationship. From everyone’s stand point, it seemed they were getting along better these days, much to everyone’s relief.
An urgent call from Kels one evening, confirmed what Joe and Phil had been feeling from Rick the past few days. Rick had had a stroke and was in the hospital. Phil and Joe rushed to his side and were soon followed by the rest of the family. Nick sent his regards with them and had stayed behind in case Rachel showed up with any news on Sav.
The doctors had told them, given his age and the damage to his heart from the stroke, if he had another while in the hospital, he wouldn’t survive it. All they could do now was make Rick as comfortable as possible. Once Joe and Phil filed into his room, after speaking with the doctors, tears pricked at their eyes. Both of them immediately thought back to the past to the young strapping drummer of 15.
Sitting by his bed for hours, Rick regained consciences, a weak smile appeared on his lips upn seeing his long time brothers. He knew they would come, but missed seeing Sav there with them. A whispered ‘How is Sav?’ was the first thing he asked. Joe reassured him that he is fine, glancing at Phil when he told him. The next thing out of Rick’s mouth shocked them both.
Against his better judgment and medical practice, the doctor agreed to let Rick leave the hospital, under the care of Phil and Joe. They took him home and Nick joined them there for a little while, staying long enough to make sure there were no complications after Joe and Phil brought him across. Nick chuckled to himself on the way back to Joe’s house about how against Rick was to come across.
Phil and Gail would take over the task of helping Rick settle into his new life, leaving Joe with no other worries, other than Sav. The next time Joe saw Rick, he was young and once again the youngest of them. Joe explained to Rick that he couldn’t, at the moment share a blood kiss with him, there for strengthening their bond. He didn’t want to trouble Rick with the turmoil and fear over Sav.
Evelyn smiled to herself thinking of Rick, he was a young man again, with a whole new outlook on life, he was settling into the life of a vampire quiet well, by all accounts she had heard over the years that he didn’t want that kind of life. But the shadow of Sav remained hanging over the house.
Evelyn stepped forward and lightly touched Joe’s arm. He turned and looked at her, she could see the red puffiness in his eyes. Evelyn reached up and gently caressed his cheek. He had been crying for the way he treated her last night and like so many times before, for Sav.
“I’m sorry.” Joe whispered. “I didn’t mean too be so rou…”
Evelyn wrapped her arms around his neck, Joe's went around her waist.
“Come to back to bed Joe, you need to rest.”
Taking his hand Evelyn pulled him inside, securely closing the door behind them. Joe pulled her against his chest when she snuggled next to him. Evelyn rubbed his chest with her fingers, loving the way the soft hairs felt under them.
Joe kissed the top of her head. “Let’s get married.”
“You already asked me that.”
“I know, but I want to do it today, right now.”
Evelyn sat up and looked at him. “Today?”
“Yes.” Joe searched her eyes. “What….you don’t want to?”
“Yes, but I thought you wanted…”
Joe sprang from the bed, pulling on more clothes. “Alright then, let’s do it. You gather everybody and I’ll call Charles, he’ll do the ceremony for us. Good thing everyone is staying here.”
“What about Thomas, he’s not here?”
“Oh.” Joe stopped in mid stride. “I’ll tell him about it.” he rushed out of the room and downstairs. Going into the kitchen to get the phonebook, he barreled right into Nick.
“You asshole.” Joe huffed. “Watch where you’re going.”
“I’m not the one running in the house.” Nick retorted. “Where is the fire?”
“The one I want to throw you in? I haven’t built it yet.”
“Evening Joe.” Phil said coming up behind Nick. “Something wrong?”
”No, I need to make a phone call. Need to call someone to marry Evelyn and I.” He roughly pushed Nick aside and went for the phonebook.
“You’re getting married today?” Rick asked joining in the conversation.
“Isn’t that a little sudden?” Phil asked.
“No, I asked her months ago to marry me, we’ve put it off long enough.” Joe thumbed through the book, he stopped and looked up. “Hey Nick, you wouldn’t happen to have been a priest in your lustrous career?”
“Don’t be absurd.” Nick scoffed.
“Wouldn’t want you to marry us anyway.” Joe turned back to looking through the book.
Phil and Rick looked at each other.
“Guess we have a last minute wedding to plan.” Phil said and raced from the room, Rick fast on his heels.
Nick rolled his eyes, when Joe started talking to a Charles, almost pleading with him to do the ceremony within two hours.
Joe hung up the phone, after Charles agreed to perform the ceremony, to see Nick moving chairs. “What are you doing?”
“Preparing the room for you to get married.”
”We’re not getting married in my kitchen Nick. Are you nuts?”
“Very well then.” Nick started and put the chairs back in place. “Where would you like to do it then? In the garden, in full daylight?”
“Ha ha, very funny. You can stand out there and watch. You can be the huge burning candle that we light ours from.”
Nick smirked and followed him to the studio. Joe started moving things around, making a bigger space.
“You couldn’t possible think of having it in here?”
“Sure why not.”
”It’s less romantic than the kitchen.”
“You wouldn’t know ditty squat about romance Nick. Your idea of romance is demand, threaten, force and…” Joe stopped what he was doing. “What was it again…beatings?”
Nick ignored his ramblings. “I think the living room would work best.”
”You think so?”
”Yes Joseph, I do.”
Joe glanced around the room at all the equipment. “Yeah I guess your right. Help me in the living room then.” Joe grabbed his arm and dragged Nick with him. “And stop calling me Joseph.”
“As you wish Joseph.” Nick chuckled.
Amber met up with them in the living room.
“Daddy are you serious about marrying Evelyn today? She hasn’t even bought a wedding gown yet.”
“I didn’t think about that.” Joe glanced at her.
“It’s alright Joe.” Evelyn said from the stairs. “I’m sure Amber can help me pick something out that I already have.”
Joe reached for her. “Are you sure? I mean, we can wait until later today, that will give you the chance to find one.”
“I’m sure.” Evelyn kissed him. “The living room is fine too and I’ll go out into the garden and cut some flowers.”
Joe kissed her this time and watched her walk into the kitchen. Nick gave him a little jolt.
“You shouldn’t have to move that much stuff in here. It’s plenty big for everyone. I think you two should stand in front of the fireplace.”
”Are you a wedding coordinated now?”
“Sure why not. I’ve never done that one before. Also it will give you time to pick something out to wear too.”
“Ok.” Joe started to leave then turned back to Nick. “I wish Sav could be here for this.”
Nick moved closer to him and lightly touched his face. “So do I Joseph.”
Joe didn’t jerk away from his touch.
“In time he will be. Now go get ready.”
“Ok.” Joe mumbled and bounded up the stairs a few seconds later.
Less than 2 hours later, Evelyn was on Phil’s arm, being lead down the stairs and brought forward to join Joe, who was standing in front of Charles.
Joe shifted a bit nervously on his feet watching Evelyn come toward him. She may not be dressed in the wedding gown that she dreamed of wearing one day, even in her simple creamed colored dress that hung just below her knees, a few little white flowers adorned her hair, piled on top her head, soft curls dangling down. Joe’s eyes raked her still slim figure and the dress hugged her soft curves, just the site of her still took Joe’s breath away.
Phil kissed her cheek and slipped her hand in Joe’s. Taking his place beside Gail, they listened to Charles as he recited the marriage vows.
Joe eyes never wavered from Evelyn’s as he held tight to her hand.
Nick stood behind Joe, just off to the side. His eyes darted to the door leading to the kitchen as Rachel came into view. He gave her a warning glare not to interrupt, but she was also in Joe’s line of vision.
Evelyn’s smile faded a bit when he looked away from her, his smile dropped. Evelyn gripped his hand tighter to get his attention when he continued to stare behind her.
Joe tore his eyes from Rachel, then back to Evelyn. “I…I do.” And he slipped the ring on her finger.
Evelyn repeated the same motions as Joe, getting a feeling she knew who he was looking at behind her.
Joe leaned down to kiss her, sealing their vows. Evelyn broke away first, she reached up and caressed his cheek. Knowing how much Sav meant to him and what Rachel’s appearance would cause.
“Go to her Joe, find out how he is.”
Joe held her head gently between his hands, kissing her harder. “I love you.”
“Love you back.” Evelyn smiled.
