When Night Falls(Pt25)
A week later, Joe was sitting in the gazebo, staring blankly at the guards as the made their way around the grounds. Blinking his eyes several times to clear away the dryness from staring, he leaned forward, propping his elbows on his knees and rubbed the weariness from his face.
Joe willed his mind to find happier times whenever he started feeling lonely, depressed inside. He sought out a very recent memory from earlier in the evening. Everyone was gathered around the gazebo or laying a short distance away, as Amber and Scott were. Drawing comfort from each other as yet another day passed with no contact from the mad man. Laughter flowed easily, even under the circumstance they were facing, they had to go on living, until such a time the whole family was together again. The corner’s of Joe mouth jutted upward, remembering the cheeky grin Phil had on his face when he came back from the house laden down with guitars. A jam session or writing music always lifted their spirits. Kyle joined in, despite hitting many wrong cords, getting boo’s and jeers from everyone, it was all in fun though, they knew if he kept practicing he would get better.
It was when he started singing, Joe stopped playing to stare at him.
Kyle caught him staring. “What...why did you stop playing?”
Joe found his own voice. “Y..you sound exactly like Sav.”
Kyle glanced around at everyone. “No I don’t.”
“You do. I can dig out some old demo’s he did, just his voice, you can listen to those...hear it for your self.”
“We learn something else about you Kyle,” Phil began. “You can sing.”
“Only in the shower, never in front of anyone.”
Rick laughed at his sudden shyness, “Well you just sang in front of us. Keep going, its great to hear some one else sing.”
“Oh, I…” Kyle shot his gaze to Joe, who tried to cover up the sudden tears. “Don’t think that is a good idea.”
Joe smiled at him. “It’s OK, I’m fine. Just took me by surprise because I didn’t know you could sing or...or...”
Tiny also noticed his sudden change and set out to bring the laughter and fun back. “Now my life is even more torturous.
“Oh, why is that Tiny?”
Tiny suggestively wiggle his eyebrows, “I have a mini Savage to lust after.”
“Uh...I..I’m not...into that...into men. Sorry.”
Tiny faked fainting. “I’m doomed.”
Laughter floated around the gathering. Phil started strumming his guitar again as Joe sat his down and stood up.
“I’m going for a walk.” he informed them.
“Stay for a little longer,” Rick began. “The sun will be up all to soon.”
Joe looked around at everyone, knowing they were trying to ease his anguish, his apologetic gaze landed on Kyle. “I’m fine, going for that walk will help clear my mind some.”
No one tried to stop him this time, but Tiny noticed the falter as he approached the steps, then stumbled down them, losing his balance to land heavily on the ground. His body curled into a ball, cradling his head in agony, as a gut wrenching wail escaped his lungs. Tiny was close to him and sprang to his feet, quickly gathering Joe against his massive chest. He saw Nick coming toward them, stumbling forward as he landed close by.
Tiny shot him a questioning look.
“It...it’s Rick...” Nick tried to shake the images and pain coming from him. “His mind, thoughts are...are unguarded.”
Tiny heard the muffled sounds coming from all around him of others that shared a bond with Sav. “What did you see...feel?”
Nick crawled to them, pressing himself to Joe’s back. Tiny could hear him softly talk to Joe, then a louder whisper that was directed to him. “Thomas.”
Tiny drew in a deep breath, pulling the men closer to him as he tried to comfort them. Given the sounds and reactions he saw and felt around him, he knew the images coming through were of Thomas’ death.
Once everyone recovered from that emotional, taxing ordeal, they all agreed to not talk about it, it would only make those painful images return. One by one or two, they ambled off to other places, some went to their rooms to turn in early. Joe elected to stay in the gazebo to collect his strength and thoughts, but he knew a few of them were not far away if he should need them.
Joe quickly stood up, taking a deep breath to help rid his memory of the painful end to the evening.
‘How did it all get out of hand?’ He wondered for the hundredth time. As the weeks dragged on and no word from the mad man, his glimmer of hope in finding Sav, slowly began to fade. For the second time, Joe thought about ending it. Sitting there, waiting for the sun to take away all the pain and emptiness he felt. But the few times that he had felt Sav touch his mind, like tonight, however debilitating it was, kept him from doing that. It was always brief, always filled with pain, but yet a longing to be with him at home.
Standing at the rail, he stared off into the darkness, moments later, he swiped fingers across his face, then through his hair. He forced that memory from his mind, wanted to burn it out. Instead he brought forth happier times, one that could bury the horrible image of Thomas. “Rick is still out there…alive. I’m not going to let him win Thomas.” Joe mumbled to himself.
“Let who win?”
Joe spun around at the familiar voice.
Dylan was slowly coming up the stairs to the gazebo, a smirk of a smile played on his mouth. Joe gathered himself to move toward him, intent on killing him, but Dylan’s raised hand stopped him.
“Not a wise thing to do Joe.”
“You have a lot of nerve showing your face here.”
“I though a meeting in person was more appropriate at this time.” Dylan stopped in front of him.
“Do you honestly think showing your inner self is going to intimidate me?”
“No.” Dylan dropped his eyes to his throat, boldly running his finger along the vein.
Joe slapped his hand away. “Where is Rick?”
“Tied up…” Dylan smiled. “…in my bedroom.”
“What have you done to him?”
“Nothing that he hasn’t enjoyed.”
”I find that highly doubtful.” Joe countered.
Dylan chuckled softly. “You still have a sore spot because he chose me over you all those years ago.
“No…” Joe started with a chuckle of his own, narrowing of his eyes, “…you were just a diversion a…fling that meant nothing to him, like so many before you. Who did he return too after he was bored with you?”
“Who has him now?” Dylan smirked.
“Who would Rick run to if he wasn’t being held against his will?”
Dylan smiled again and turned around, taking a few steps before he came face to face with Nick. “Ah Mr. de Brabant, how nice to see you again.”
Nick’s hand shot out, grabbing Dylan by the throat, lifting him off the weather boards. “Where is he?”
“I…I…ca…” Dylan struggled to reply.
Joe moved to stand beside Nick, staring up at Dylan. “How can he tell us anything, with your hand crushing his throat?”
Nick released him, Dylan crashed to the deck, coughing and rubbing his neck.
“Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t kill him?”
“He knows where Rick is.” Joe replied reaching for Dylan, yanking him to his feet. “You better start talking or I will forcefully take the information I need to find Rick.”
Dylan tried to disengage Joe’s fists from his shirt. “That is an empty threat.”
Joe let the vampire within him loose. “Its hardly an empty threat.”
“If you kill me…”
He was easily flung around when Joe slammed him into the post of the gazebo. “I don’t need to kill you to get what I need.”
Dylan kept his wits about him, fully expecting Joe or Nick would do him bodily harm when he showed up. “Rick will be dead if you harm me in any way.
With a deep, rumbling growl that was released in a yell, Joe let him go and moved to the other side, to grip the railing.
Dylan straightened his clothes as he chanced a look to Nick stand there staring him down.
“I would have killed you.”
“No you wouldn’t, it would put Rick’s life in danger.”
Nick smiled coyly at him. “I would find him before your blood soaks into these boards and your...cohort knew you are dead.”
Dylan fought with his weakness of intimidation against Nick’s powerful presents. “Are you willing to test your theory on that?”
In a blur, Nick was within inches of his face, vampire in full view. “Boo.”
Dylan quickly jumped back from him, fear clearly on his face.
Nick cackled with laughter. “Scared little mouse are you. Joseph, I told you he wasn’t the master mind behind this plan.”
“Don’t toy with the boy Nick, he might leave and not give us anything.”
“That was funny.” Nick replied. “If you leave, I’ll just follow you.”
Dylan cleared his throat. “Are sure about that? I do have a bond with...”
“Who.”
“Tsk, tsk...I see what you tried to do there Joe. Sorry,” Dylan shrugged his shoulder. “It didn’t work.”
“We can keep you captive here, until Rick is released.”
“If I don’t return at the appointed time, Rick is dead.”
“So why are you here? If not to gloat that you and this fucking crazy man have the upper hand.”
“To take one of you back with me.”
Joe grabbed his arm, dragging him to the steps. “We’re leaving right now.”
“Not so fast.” Dylan jerked his arm away. “It’s not you.”
“Then who is it?” Nick finally asked when Dylan stalled.
He turned to watch Joe’s reaction, “Your beautiful daughter Amber.” Dylan smiled brightly.
