Chapter Twenty-Five ~ Heart of Gold
~*~*~*~
We drove into this 50’s style drive-in diner that was in the heart of the ghetto of Dublin. Our car was the nicest one in the lot. One of the waitresses came up to our car and gave us paper menus. I already knew what I wanted. They served a lot of American food, and I wanted a Cheeseburger Deluxe with fries and a tall fountain pop. My mind started to replay the scenes that I saw on our way here. There were whole families on the street. I felt horrible for being in my position. I used to be in their place at one time.
“Michael?” “Hm?” Michael asked, not looking up from his menu. “I want to do something.” I stated knowing Michael would get curious. “What do you want to do?” Michael asked, licking his lips. I rolled my eyes. “I’m not thinking about sex.” “Oh.” Michael said, a small frown coming on his face. “I wanted to feed those people we saw.” “Oh the homeless? I was thinking about that too.” Michael said, his eyes meeting mine. “I mean why should it be fair when we get fed all the time and they sometimes get one hot meal a day. I want to give back to them.” I said, looking into my purse and grabbing a hundred. Michael put his hand upon mine. “It’s a great idea Crys. You have a big heart.” “Well, I know what its like, to be in that position. It’s not fun at all. Having to rely on someone else’s generosity because you have no money, no way out.” I said, tears coming to my eyes as my early life with Jason came back to my mind. “Those days are behind you.” Michael said, his fingers coming up to wipe away my tears. His eyes met mine. The waitress came back and asked us if we had decided what we wanted. “I’ll have a cheeseburger deluxe with fries and a tall Pepsi.” “Will Coke be okay miss?” The waitress said, she was American. I nodded. She looked at Michael. “I’ll have the same, and can I get fifty roast beef sandwiches made up with fries and cokes to go with them all?” Michael asked taking my menu and his and giving them back to the waitress. I noticed the waitress’s wandering eyes and I became wrought with anger. My mind formulating a bunch of different ways to slap the bitch. “Yes sir. I’ll come back with your orders in a bit,” The waitress said, flashing Michael a smile. I scowled at the waitress. Michael looked at me and laughed. “Jealous?” “Hell yes.” I said looking back at Michael. He laughed even harder. “Come here.” Michael said, opening his arms up. I cuddled into him as much as I could from my seat. “Honey, you aren’t going to be mad at me if I kiss other fans are you?” “No. Just don’t fall for them…” “Crys, you are the lady in my life. No one will come between us.” “You say that now, but further down the road…” “Crystal, I love you. This is a bond that no one can break…” “If you say so.” “Why don’t you believe me?” “Because I know how I am. I guess. I get jealous easily, but yet I’m so passive you could use me as a welcome mat…” “Don’t say that. I haven’t seen that side of you yet. Perhaps you are changing…” “Love does funny things to people.” I said looking at Michael, who was giggling. Moments later the waitress sashayed back with our food. Michael shook his head is disbelief then looked at me. My anger started to spark into dangerous flames. She gave me my food first, basically dropping it on my lap, then gave Michael his food, not before she slipped Michael a napkin and looked at me and scowled. “Call me Mr. Jackson. I‘d love to hear from you.” The waitress whispered in Michael’s ear. “Oh no, Look here missy, I‘m---!” Michael grabbed my hand as I was about ready to jump out of the car and pommel the slut. “Crystal, honey. She doesn‘t know.” Michael said, in a calm voice that extinguished the fiery flames of anger that radiated off of me. I let out a heavy sigh. Sort of confused at the same time. Michael turned back to the waitress. “Sorry, I’m taken. I’ll gladly autograph it for you though?” Michael said, taking the pen out of the waitresses hand and signing his name unto the napkin. “Ooh. Yay. Thank you Mr. Jackson.” The waitress said, giving Michael a kiss on the cheek. I rolled my eyes as I shoved a bunch of fries in my mouth to keep from saying anything I would regret. The waitress skipped away as Michael turned to look at me. “You should really control your anger…it’s not healthy…” “I know, I know. I can’t stand women like that. They irritate me the way they throw themselves at men like you.” I said, unwrapping my burger and taking a hearty bite of the juicy burger. Michael looked at me listening but didn’t say anything, he just unwrapped his burger and took a bite. “Why are you eating meat? I thought you were a vegan…” “I’m a vegetarian, not a vegan. Vegans are hard core no meat, eggs, or milk. They will not touch anything that has to do with an animal. Vegetarians however, we eat eggs drink milk, and I do occasionally eat chicken…” “What’s up with the burger then Mr. Vegetarian.” “I haven’t had one in forever. It sounded good.” “Right.” I said, taking another bite of my burger, I quickly chewed and swallowed. “How long has it been exactly?” Michael was in mid-bite when I asked this so I waited for him to finish his bite. “Probably since I was 19. It’s been a really long time.” “Why did you break it now?” Michael looked at his burger then at me then at his burger again and cocked his head at one side. “I’m not really sure why to be honest.” Michael said putting his burger down. I grabbed his hand and brought the burger back to his mouth. “I’m not getting after you Michael. I just thought it was a curious choice is all. I’m not being judgmental by any means. I just want to know what going on up here.” I said pointing to my head. He took another bite of his burger and shoved a couple of fries in his mouth. “Ever since you came in my life, you have my mind so jumbled girl, I don’t even know if I’m coming or going anymore.” Michael teased, winking at me. I rolled my eyes and playfully smacked him on the arm. He let out a laugh, nearly choking on his food. We finished our food and patiently waited for our sandwiches to be done. The same waitress came back holding a large flat full of sandwiches while another waitress had two more flats with fries and sodas in them. The waitresses put the food in the backseat of the car as Michael paid the bill. We took off, slowly cruising around the ghetto to see if we could see whole families on the street. Michael stopped on the corner of the 1800 block as I got out with five sandwiches for a family of four that I had spotted. I handed them the sandwiches as a sign that they could trust me. They cautiously came to the car and got fries and drinks. “We’ve been homeless for three months, we couldn’t afford our house anymore…” I noticed the little baby that woman had bundled close to her. “Boy or girl?” “Girl, Claudia Renee, after my grandmother…” “Oi, thank you for your generosity. We can’t trust hardly anyone anymore. They want to get rid of us…” “Who does?” I asked my eyes meeting the man that I had come to know as Jace. “The government. The lower class is the fastest growing class group in Ireland.” “I’m so sorry…” “Well America aren’t too far behind us.” “Unfortunately.” Michael said, uneasily. “Do you know of any other families that are in your position.” “Oh plenty…” The woman I knew as Rosie, said. “You have the O’Makafy’s. They reside in an alley a couple of blocks down this street, and the George’s live in a friend’s backyard the next block over. I’m sure they would know of more.” I nodded. “Do you have a warm place to stay?” I asked, looking at the two month old baby that Rosie held bundled against her body. “Well…we have firewood and a barrel. We’ve been staying warm by alternating…” “Oh God.” I cried out, my eyes met Michael’s. Michael then took out his wallet and took out a large wad of bills and placed them in Jace’s hand. “Get your children out of this cold. Find someplace nice.” Michael then turned to me. “We have more families to find.” Michael said, as he took me and headed down the street. “Oi! Thank you!!! You are a God-Send! God bless you!” Jace yelled. “Thank you! Thank you so so much!” Rosie yelled, choking on her tears. A small smile curled my lips. “God, I haven’t done this in…ages. I used to have such a heart for the homeless children…” Michael said, as we stopped at a light. Waiting for the ‘walk’ signal. He was carrying the pop. I was carrying the sandwiches and fries in bags. “What happened?” “Fame, managers, publicists, and all the like.” Michael said, as we began to walk across the street “When the whole world knows you it’s not easy to do what you want. It’s nearly impossible. But now, nobody takes a second glance. It’s nice.” Michael said, as we arrived at the alleyway. Sure enough there was a family of six who had set up a makeshift tent out of a torn-up tarp. I frowned as three kids from the ages of 3-8 ran out into the alley. The oldest came up to me. “Miss, you wouldn’t happen to have some spare food or money on you would you?” The little boy asked, his brown eyes pleading with the saddest expression I had ever seen on a child. All the children looked malnourished. It was enough to make me cry. “I do actually,” I said giving them two sandwiches each fries and pop. “Ooh! I’m gonna go tell ma and pa.” The little boy said as he hurried off to tell his father. A woman carrying a 6 month old and a 18 month old came out as well as the father. Both had on tattered clothes. “We have some food for you.” “You didn’t poison it…” “No, no, I’ve been in your position once. Here.” I said as I gave the lady about 10 sandwiches and fries and pop. The man kept glancing at Michael who was talking to the children. “Is that Michael Jackson?” I nodded, and held my finger to my lips. “Ah.” The man said a small smile coming to his face as his children ran up to him. “Look papa…that man gave us all the money in his wallet!!!!” The man took the money that the children had given to him. He counted it. “Oi! 600...700...1000.…2500! Mary belle!” The man said, looking at his wife. “Oh Heaven!!!! Thank you! Thank you!!!!” “Not a problem. Get these children out of the cold.” Michael said as his fingers intertwined with mine and we walked back up the street, where the car was. “Man I feel so awesome, like I’m making a difference.” I said, squeezing Michael’s hand. He smiled. “Me too, it’s the most amazing feeling in the world. Isn’t it?” I nodded. Suddenly Michael frowned. “Shit! Dude get in!” We heard a male voice shout. “No! No, no, no, no, no! MY CAR!!!” Michael said running toward the car was. The two men hopped in the car and started it up. “HEY!!! I said, taking off in a sprint and making it just in time to stand in front of the way of the car. Michael’s car spun out and I had no choice but to dive quickly out of the way of the speeding vehicle. Michael began to run after it but the car sped away quickly. “HEY! COME BACK HERE!!! Shit!” Michael said, stopping in his tracks, knowing that the chase was futile. He turned around and looked at me as I got up off the ground. “Crystal! Are you all right?” Michael yelled at me. He was a half of block up on the empty street. “Yeah I’m fine, that pisses me the fuck off!” I said, getting up off the ground. Watching the speeding car disappear into the distance. Michael ran back over to me and dug out his cell phone. “I thought I locked the car too. This is just wonderful!” Michael said, punching some numbers into his cell phone as he came by my side. I walked down the street a little ways as leaned against a brick wall to give Michael some privacy. My mind drifted and pondered different thoughts. When Michael was done on the phone Michael joined me, leaning against the wall as well. “Sorry your car got stolen…” “Why are you apologizing? They found it. They didn’t get too far. A cop is returning the car…” Just then Michael’s car rolled up. I let out a laugh. “There it is.” “Wow…that was really fast.” I commented to the officer. “Not a problem lassie. We got the two loons who lifted the car at the station being processed. They slim-jimmed the car, so no damage was done. Who do I give the keys to?” I pointed at Michael. Michael held his hand out. “Well here you go Mr. Jackson. Have a good rest of the day.” The officer said, tipping his hat to me then turning and getting into the squad car that was behind Michael’s car. “Wait!” Michael yelled out, causing the squad car to stop in the street. They rolled their window down and Michael went up to them. He motioned me to follow him, and I did. Butterflies swarmed my stomach because I was not comfortable with cops. “Hey, have you guys had lunch yet?” “Nah, we were just about to go on break why?” “Well, I have these sandwiches, you could take them back to the other officers. She’s got fries and drinks too.” Michael said, motioning to me. The man looked over Michael’s shoulder at me and nodded. “Sure, put ’em in back.” The guy said. Michael opened the back door of the squad car and placed the sandwiches in the back then he grabbed the bag of fries and box of drinks and placed them in back. He closed the door and patted the hood. “Oi! Thanks.” The man said as they finally took off. I didn’t realize that I was holding my breath until my diaphragm began to ache. I let out a breath. I then got into Michael’s car. Michael got in the other side and shut the door then turned the car on. Everything looked like it had when we left the car. All except my CD’s were all over the floorboard, broken. My eyes widened and I gave a sorrowful cry. “Fucking disrespectful pricks! I’m glad they’re in jail now. That’s where they deserve to be. Look what they did to my CDs! God, if they weren’t in jail I’d fucking kill them myself, you know that?” I said, picking up my CDs. I threw them back on the floor and ran my fingers through my hair angrily. I saw my CD that had my music was broken too. “They even broke the CD with my music on it! The shit I created! Ooh!” I said my hands clenching tightly in to fists. I wanted to hit something, anything but I abstained. “Oh baby, I’m so sorry. Look I’ll buy you your own CD collection, if Kylie accepts your song…” “She won’t Michael. Let’s just face it. I’ll just find those songs again…” “You aren’t stealing them…” Michael said gently, cupping my face in his hand. “We’ll buy them off the internet. Okay?” “Okay, but at the cheapest sites. I ain’t having you pay five bucks for a freaking song…forget that shit.” I said, relaxing into my seat as I heard Michael laugh. I gave a small smile. “Deal.” Michael said through his laughter as he put the car in gear and we headed back toward his house. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
