Chapter 25
I woke up thirty minutes before the others were supposed to meet us. I groaned as I stretched, trying to wake up my soar body. I rubbed my eyes, trying to remove the last traces of sleep, before getting out of bed.
I walked quietly to the bathroom to take a quick shower. I was still exhausted, but no matter what, I wasn’t about to wait any longer before I could take Joseph down. He was a threat to me, to my lover and to my friends. I wanted to crush him. But it all required a few preparations. We needed to come up with a plan, that was the first step and I knew, but that didn’t keep me from wishing I could just stake him now and get it over with. I hated the fact that there was actually someone or something I couldn’t handle by myself. I had been used to taking everything into my own hands, but with Joseph that was impossible. I needed all the help I could get, but I didn’t have to admit that to anyone, now did I?
I was finished getting ready just as someone knocked on the door. I waited a couple of seconds to see if Kevin was going answer it. When he didn’t I went to do it myself. It didn’t put much thought into the fact that Kevin didn’t even make a sound, figuring that he was probably busy doing some research. Sometimes he could get so lost in some of his old dusty books that the world outside of them seized to exist. It was actually quite funny. Sometimes, he would act his age, being funny, social, all the things any normal 31 year old would do, and other times you’d think he was in his early sixties with the way he could act around his precious book collection. I guess that watcher-training he got in England really affected him in that perspective. Or maybe he’s always been weird that way?
I swung the door open, expecting to find the gang standing outside, and just as I realized that the gang would have just walked in if it had been them, and that Kevin never would have ignored someone knocking on the door, when we were a fight as important and dangerous as this one, I felt some one pushing a piece of cloth over my mouth and nose, as I was grabbed and pulled outside. I knew that the cloth had probably been soaked in chloroform, so I did everything in my power to not inhale, but since I also had to struggle against whoever was holding my arms, trying to tie them together, I knew this was a battle I wouldn’t win. My opponent had caught me by surprise and therefore succeeded in kidnapping a Slayer. As unconsciousness drifted over me, I was still mentally kicking myself for letting my guard down.
AJ arrived at Kevin’s apartment at 7 on the dot. Something quite unusual for him, but the seriousness of the situation did strange things to people. He decided to let himself in, and was surprised by the silence that reigned over the place. He had expected both Angel and Kevin to be shuffling around trying to come up with some sort of plan, but the place seemed almost deserted. He had a bad feeling about it. The only thing that indicated that someone was home was the fact that the door was unlocked and the lights were on all over the place. He walked through the apartment searching for Kevin and Angel. He could feel the blood pumping through his veins. Fear gripped him as he realized that no one was present. He hoped against hope that the only reason the place was void of any activity was that they had just gone out to get some snacks for the night, but he knew in his heart that that wasn’t the case. He decided that he had to go outside to see if there were any clues anywhere as to what had happened. The first thing he checked was if Kevin’s car was still in its usual spot. It was. He was starting to tremble. The graveness of the situation finally hitting him, he frantically searched everywhere he could think of.
Panting, he reached the garbage cans at the back of the large building. He heard a whimper from behind one of the cans. He stopped, listening, but all he seemed to hear was his own heartbeat. Finally a groan broke through the deafening silence. He rushed over to were the sound came from and found Kevin lying on the ground, fighting to find some balance that would enable him to sit up. AJ fell to his knees beside Kevin and reached out to help him.
“What happened?” he asked, panic clear in his voice. Kevin looked at him, but som, he, he didn’t seem to see him. AJ felt something tighten around his heart. Angel! Something has happened to Angel. He wanted to ask Kevin a million questions, but somehow he knew that if he tried, he wouldn’t be able to make a sound. His throat was suddenly very dry. He waited for Kevin to answer his question.
“I…I don’t know.” Kevin said, barely above whisper. “I came out here to throw out some trash and the next thing I know, I waking up on the ground with the mother of all headaches…” Kevin suddenly fell quiet. AJ watched as realization dawned on him and finally Kevin continued,
“They’ve got Angel!” Panicked, Kevin tried to stand up, but found it to be difficult when the world was spinning out of control. AJ grabbed his arms and helped him to stand. He guided them both inside, where he placed Kevin on the couch and then he went into the kitchen to get some water and some painkillers. When he returned he sat across from Kevin and looked at him as he downed the pills and water. He desperately wanted to know who was responsible for this, but he knew he had to let Kevin calm down first. He had never seen Kevin so shaken up before. He looked truly afraid, and that frightened AJ.
“Did you see who it was?” He asked, when the waiting became too much. Kevin shook his head and looked apologetically at him,
“No…but I have a pretty good idea.”
“Joseph!” AJ hissed, venom dripping from his voice, “I swear to god, if he hurts her he’ll wish he was dead!”
“Um…” Kevin said, but AJ interrupted him,
“Okay…deader!”
Silence fell over them again, and AJ imagined all the different ways he wanted to kill Joseph if he ever got his hands on him. However, he knew that if he ever came even remotely cloo Joo Joseph it much more likely that he would be the one who would end up dead, and he knew it. But he couldn’t find anything wrong with fantasizing about it. Finally he stood up and walked over to the phone. Kevin didn’t say anything. He knew AJ was calling to hear were everyone else was. It was 7.15 pm; everybody should have been there by now.
It turned out that the rest of the gang had been just down the street, when AJ had called Howie’s cell phone. Thirty seconds after they hung up, they all burst through the door. They ran into the living-room where AJ and Kevin waited for them.
“What happened?” Dani asked.
“Joseph’s minions paid us a little visit.” Kevin said, sounding tired. He knew he should probably try to be more aware of what was going on around him, but the pain in his skull was just a tiny bit distracting. He really wanted to do everything in his power to help figure out what to do next, but he also knew that as long as his brain felt like it was throbbing, that wasn’t possible.
“They took Angel.” AJ said, “We gotta get her back! We probably don’t have much time!” He was panting, from the anger holed up inside him. He wanted some heads to roll, and he wanted them to start rolling as quickly as possible. Nobody got away with hurting the people he loved most.
“It’s always nice to know that we can count on you stating the obvious, even in situations like this!” Howie said sarcastically. AJ glared at him,
“Well I don’t see you doing anything to help!” AJ said menacingly. They both stood up and looked like they were about to jump each other. Kevin groaned and Dani finally had enough. She stood up and got between the two guys. She looked pointedly at both of them and said,
“You two fighting is not gonna help this situation!” She turned toward AJ, “I know you are scared AJ, but you gotta calm down…we all have to be able to think clear, if we’re gonna help Angel.” Then she looked at Howie, “And you, quit with the smart remarks! That’s the last thing we need right now! Now sit!” AJ and Howie both plopped down in their chair, completely stunned by Dani’s outburst. Usually she was the last person to open her mouth, and here she was, telling them both to shut up and concentrate. They almost felt proud of her, and they would have, if it hadn’t been such a dire situation.
When I woke up, I found myself chained to a wall in a dark room, only illuminated by torches scattered around the room. After taking in my surroundings I came to the conclusion that I was trapped in a dungeon. But I couldn’t think of any place that I knew of, that would be big and old enough to have a dungeon. I couldn’t see anyone in the room with me, so I decided to try and see if she would be able to break free of the chains that were holding me to the wall. I tried kicking my legs forward, but that only resulted in a stabbing pain shooting through my body. Then I tried pulling the chains holding my arms, out of the wall, but the same pain shot through me.
“They’re electrified.” I murmured. I assumed that the chains were rigged in a way that made them shoot an electrical current through my body, whenever the chains were pulled. It basically secured me in place, since, if I kept trying to pull on them, I would end up being too exhausted to do anything, when I finally got free. All I could do was wait…
