Chapter 26 - The Bloated Pig
"Orlando, no. I am not going to eat a restaurant named 'The Bloated Pig'. There is no way."
The man at my side chuckled and gently pushed me into the overhang, protecting us from the winter rain drenching the streets. It felt odd to celebrate my birthday when it wasn't 90 outside and the sun wasn't shining. It had rained on the day of my 21st birthday, of course.
"Come on. You'll be fine. It's a great place, and besides you said it was my choice for dinner, and this is what I chose." Orli smiled, trying to console me.
This was outrageous, to even consider a place like this. It even had a picture of a pig with an apple stuffed in it's poor mouth and a smile on his face. "You know, as a vegetarian, you should be concerned as well."
Rolling his eyes, he opened the door and pushed me through. "Can-it and get in there!"
I stumbled once before gasping as the lights went up in the bar and a big cheer came up from a crowd of thirty people. "SURPRISE LAURA!" The Hobbits were grinning and clapping wildly, giving me thumbs up when I caught their eyes.
My own eyes went wide as I surveyed the scene. The movie group must really be getting sick of having me around. This was the third or fourth party that I had been the guest of honor at and these people had all been there. They all looked genuinely pleased though, and it was a great surprise. I had been afraid that no one would remember. But, everyone had remembered.
Liv swept me into a hug as soon as the initial shock wore off. With a laugh and a cough, I hugged her back. "Happy birthday Laura!" Many cheers went up with this statement and I grinned back at Liv. Viggo was next, followed by Ian H., Sean and his wife (who was visiting for a month), Dom, Billy, Lij, Petah, and finally Ian M. The rest of the cast and crew were content with a slap on the back now and then and a random hug.
I was all smiles as I was lead to a long table and told to sit. Drinks were brought out and everyone seemed to settle down as dinner was started. Much of this passed in a dizzy blur for me. The sheer mass of humanity was startling. People were simply everywhere as rich slabs of meat and large quantities of fruit were laid upon the table in front of me. I was growing hungry just looking at all the food, and I was very grateful when Vigg called everyone to order, and gave us all leave to eat.
Orli was silent through most of the meal, eating little and talking less. He seemed worried, and my many attempts at cheering him up were merely met with a small smile and a kiss on the cheek. His hand was often straying to his pocket and I could only wonder what he had hidden in the folds of his clothing. I had a few ideas, but only time would tell what he had there.
"Laura, what are you going to so when school gets out for you? Do you have any other plans?"
I was distracted as I heard Ian H's voice to my right. I turned, and gave him a smile. "Um, I don't really know right now. All I know for sure is that I don't want to leave New Zealand right now. There are too many good things and good people here to just up and leave." The irony of the situation struck me as funny and I started to chuckle low in my throat.
"Well, that is good to hear." I nodded with the actor as Viggo stood and held up his hands for silence.
Everyone in attendance quieted almost immediately. Perhaps he had been a king in a former life. "I would like to take this chance to say thank you to everyone for coming. I know that it's been a long time since we've actually had a chance to kick back and relax, but it's wonderful to see all of you, my friends, able to relax." He cleared his throat for a second before taking a sip of his wine. "As you all know, it is my niece's 21st birthday today. That holds much significance on many levels. If we were in America, it would mean that she was finally a completely legal adult, able to drink. This, of course, would have been a bit odd because she has already started a fine drinking record!" There was much laughing to this. All had heard of my escapade breaking my nose, and even so far back as the time I sang bad karaokee a few weeks after I had first arrived.
I lowered my forehead to one hand as Orli laughed next to me. I felt his arm on my shoulder and smiled up at him while Vigg continued. "Also, as the middle daughter of the oldest son, you are to have an inheritance at this time. I know this all sounds terribly ringish to have a tradition like this in the family, but what can I say? My family loves to make things odd." He laughed as he circled around the table to come and stand next to me. I had no idea what this inheritance was. I heard mutterings about my present on my birthday before, but I still had no idea what it was.
"This is one of the hardest secrets to keep in the family, but we're bringing it into the open today." At my horrified glance he laughed harder. "It's nothing bad. It's not like I'm going to announce that you're going to die or anything. The gift is actually a ring." Many of the members of the group chuckled and laughed outright at this announcement. I merely watched my uncle intently, waiting for his next move.
He reached into his deep coat pocket and removed a fair-sized ring box. Creaking the top open he lowered the displayed jewelry to my eye-level. It was a beautiful pea-sized diamond/ruby combo set intricately in platinum and gold. I reached for the ring, but Vigg pulled the box back.
"This is a ring that can only be given on one circumstance. It has to be an wedding ring, and that is the only way I can give it to you."
My smile froze on my face as gasps and astonishment ran through the whole group. I could feel Orli tighten at my side as Vigg turned his gaze to my lover with expectancy. "So how about it Orlando? Are you going to go through with your plans?"
All eyes flew to Orlando, and mine were no exception. A thread of bliss and hope wound it's way around my heart as his gaze fell to mine. He nodds hes he looked down upon me. Before that day, I had never seen such contentment on the face of a man. "I do intend to, but," he turned to glance at my uncle, "Not here. I have somewhere else in mind."
Viggo nodded in understanding and motioned for us to rise. He lifted his glass high. "A toast! To my niece and to my friend. It has been a pleasure to watch your relationship grow and to see you both blossom under the soft light of love. I wish you the best of luck." He smiled softly before stepping aside so we could pass.
The strange urge to cry crept upon me and the only thing I could figure was that I was happy beyond all previous measure. Orli took my hand gently, leading me from the crowded bar as the crowd clapped us on. He turned to smile at me before he lead me out of 'The Bloated Pig' and to his car.
We drove less than two miles to a place that I was well familiarized with. We had come to the studio! Orlando bounced from the car and I wondered what was going on. He led me inside the main building and it was eerily quiet in the nighttime silence. Most of the equipment had been put away for the night, but there was a rack of clothing that was still out in the open. It was to these clothes that Orli lead me, telling me to pick a dress.
"Make sure it's something special. You're going to want something memorable." The excitement was building inside of me as I chose a dark blue, floor-length gown with an off-the-shoulder neckline. Orlando was all smiles as he let me change, he himself disappearing for a few minutes. When he came back, I was dressed and he has put on his elf wear, this time making it a bit more formal wear, I supposed. It seemed like he was wearing battle mail and a cloak, but that was just me. I giggled at the sight of him with out his blond hair and in all the elf stuff. He looked mismatched.
Seeing where my gaze was, he rubbed his head comically. "I know, it doesn't look quite right but no one from make-up would come down and help me out and I can't figure out how to put my hair on. It's just too bloody long!"
I giggled foolishly as he sobered and approached me. "I have something very important to ask you. Now, this is something that I've been thinking about for a very long time, and I think you've been thinking about it as well." He took my hands in his and slowly started to walk backwards, towards the set. I looked over his shoulder quickly to glimpse what lay ahead of me. The bridge that I had first seen 'Aragorn' and 'Arwen' on was still up, standing tall and proud. With a devilish grin, Orlando caught me around the waist and lifted me up onto the smooth arch. He hopped up onto the short 'bridge' and pulled me up with him.
He held my hands again, facing me and looking deep into my eyes. The simple romance of the situation was giving me goosebumps and I couldn't stop my grin from spreading and never stopping. I had been waiting for this for a long, long time.
"I've known you for about 4 months now Laura, and those 4 months have been the best of my entire life. And, truth be known, I don't want that time to end, ever. I want to spend my life with you. And you know how odd it is that I would want to devote my life to just one thing. I had a hard enough time with choosing a movie for 18ths.ths. Anyway, I'm getting off subject. What I'm trying to say is that I love you, unconditionally, and I want to spend my life as your husband."
My breath caught in my throat as he drew out another ring box and opened the lid. Bending down on one knee, he looked up at me over the ring. "Laura, will you do me the honor and give me the privilege of being my wife?"
My hand flew to my mouth. I wasn't so much surprised as I was happy and relieved that someone had finally asked the question. Joy was spilling from me as I grinned as a tear rolled down my cheek and I nodded, smiling. Orlando grinned in perhaps relief and slid the ring onto my finger. It was a perfect fit. I pulled him up and hugged him, kissing his deeply. I was getting married! I WAS GETTING MARRIED! I almost squealed in joy and resisted the urge to jump around happily. Orli was grinning into my mouth and I couldn't stop giggling.
There was a sudden crash out behind the director's chair and Orlando was instantly alert. "What is it? Is it one of the crew or cast?"
Orlando shook his head. "They all have the night off. And besides, they were all paid well not to disturb us tonight."
I smiled over at him, completely in love with just him. "Paid off huh?"
H turned to give me a quick smile before he hopped down. "Stay here. I'm going to investigate." I nodded my ascent and he slipped into the shadows.
I stayed put for a good five minutes until I head a shout then a crash coming from the direction Orlando had vacated. "ORLANDO!" I shouted as I jumped, and twisted an ankle on the landing. I muffled a curse before testing my weight on the joint. It was usable so I hobbled into the general direction of the crash. There were two men struggling in the dark. I could tell on was my fiancé, but I couldn't identify the other. Suddenly, the other man landed a good punch on Orli. I shrieked before dodging behind a box. Above me, props and junk swayed dangerously, but I didn't care. I watched as the pair struggled a few seconds longer.
Orlando was bested again by the sheer bulk of the other man and the intruder pushed Orli away. He headed straight for me. I eeped and flattened myself against the box I was hiding behind. The man passed me, and seemed to not see me. I let out my breath in a sigh of relief. The sound of my breathe leaving my body caught the man's ear and he turned. Fear and horror masked my face as he stopped and turned slowly, before heading back.
I couldn't think of what to do. Should I help Orlando? Should I run for my life? Should I go try to get help? I couldn't process any knowledgeable thought, so I stood there. He caught my neck with a beefy hand and I gasped as he pushed me against the boxes.
"Aren't you a pretty little elf?" I gasped as my air supply was further limited and my breathing became labored. He leaned in, smiling. "Tell me elf, will you live forever?" Tears started to run down my cheeks as he laughed in my face before slamming the back of my head against the rough wood.
I heard the equipment falling before I had a chance to say a word. There was the sound of metal scraping against metal as my gaze drifted upwards and in my slightly drowsy, definitely hazy state, I saw the s cor corner of the box headed straight for my temple.
There was a dull thunk as the hand fell from my neck and I looked to see Orlando's downward motion from a piece of wood. He had hit the man on his head, but nothing could save me from the heavy objects falling. I gave him a small pleading gasp as the pain from my sprained ankle threatened the loss of blood in seriousness. He glanced up and I saw horror wash his face pale, then the world went black.
