“Who wants another beer?” Joe called out as he made his way into the kitchen. No one paid any attention to him, but kept to whatever they were doing.
“99 bottle of beers on the wall, 99 bottles of beer…” Mumbling to himself, he opened the fridge and reached for some beers. Placing them on the counter next to him, he looked back into the living room as to see how many were in there. Grabbing for some more beers, he joggled to carry them all into the living room. Throwing a beer to each of his friends, he plopped himself down on the couch next to Phoenix.
Sat in a chair, Brad was deep in his own thoughts and the happy chattering around the room didn’t seem to distract him one bit. He was still thinking about what Mike had told him, and he still found it hard to believe. He couldn’t help but to worry since Mike and Rob had been gone for a few hours now and as much as he wanted to think that they were clearing the air – he had a funny feeling inside that something was off. Looking around the room, he saw people laughing and drinking. Except one. Chester. Brad stared at him and saw the blank worried look in his eyes. Getting up from his seat, he walked over to Chester and placed a hand on his shoulder.
Jumping slightly from having been in another world completely, Chester looked at his friend who was smiling softly.
“I know too.” Brad whispered and kneeled down by Chester’s chair. He nodded as if counting on Mike needing Brad’s advice.
“Do you think that they are okay?” He looked Brad dead in the eye and it was obvious to them both that this could get serious if Rob knew.
“I hope so.” Chester shot a glance around the room and sighed. “This could get complicated…”
“Tell me about it.” Brad shifted slightly and sat down on the floor next to Chester’s chair, and shook his head.
“Anyone know where Rob and Gemma dpearpeared to?” Phoenix interrupted the secret silence shared between the Brad and Chester.
Looking at Brad, Chester mouthed the word: “Gemma?” Brad looked just as confused and turned to Phoenix.
“Gemma’s here?” He looked around the room hoping that someone had some answers in store for him. Gemma wasn’t supposed to be there now. Mike and Rob needed the time alone to sort things out. Brad got up from his spot on the floor and went over to the couch.
“Yeah. She and Rob came inside about an hour ago.” Phoenix looked up at Brad, frowning slightly from the tone in Brad’s voice. Joe nudged Phoenix’s shoulder, grinning.
“I bet I know where they are… or what they’ve been doing.” Phoenix started laughing with Joe and they both missed the look exchanged between Chester and Brad.
“Did you see Mike come in as well?” A concerned voice reached them and prevented them from taking the joke further. Chester was looking at them like he was in a hurry. He couldn’t get the answer fast enough.
“What?” Joe looked back and forth from Brad and Chester and sensed that something was wrong.
“Mike!?! Did you see him with them?” Chester was getting aggravated and Brad moved his hand up to his shoulder and rested it there as to calm him down.
“I didn’t see him. Chill, man.” Joe’s eyes screamed out the confusion.
“Me neither.” Phoenix looked down into his lap feeling the intensity around them. “What’s going on?”
Without a word spoken, Chester looked at the front door and at at Brad. With a simple nod, he left the others behind and went outside to look for Mike.
“Brad? Mind telling us what Chester’s problem is?” Joe got up from the couch and went to the window to look what Chester was up to. w isw isn’t really the best time…” Brad left the sentence hanging in the air and instead of finishing it; he decided to take a look in the house in case Mike had slipped past them unnoticed.
Phoenix wanted to call out for him and demand an explanation, but the look in Brad’s eyes held him back – he could tell how worried Brad was. And Chester had seemed distraught, which wasn’t like him. Phoenix got up and tugged at Joe’s shirt to get him away from the window.
“Let’s just forget about it now… “ He tried to remove the tense feeling by chuckling lightly. “Besides… we have a couple of new beers opened… we wouldn’t want to waste them, now would we?!” Joe looked over at the two beers and then at Phoenix. Shaking his head with a grin on his face, he walked over to the table and swallowed the beer.
“Now… let’s party, Dave. I think we need it.”
Brad made his way down the hall and saw that the bathroom door was closed. He got a feeling in the pit of his stomach and grabbed the doorknob, but then he paused for a second as he looked in the direction of his bedroom door. Closed? He knew for a fact that it wasn’t closed earlier. Wondering for a moment if he should take a look, he heard muffled sobmingming from the bathroom.
“Mike?” He softly called out the name and awaited a response. Yet another sob came from behind the closed door and he pulled lightly at the doorknob. It was locked. “Mike? Are you in there?” He could hear someone move around against the door and louder sobs exited from the bathroom, and now it became clear to him that it was Mike. “Are you alright, Mike?” Brad’s concerned voice obviously interrupted the sobbing as it abruptly came to a stop. “Mike? Let m ple please.” He heard the lock click and went inside. Seeing Mike sit up against the wall with tears running down his cheeks made his heart break. “Mike…” Gently sitting down next to him, he put his arms around him and felt Mike’s body tremble as he started crying harder.
---
“Rob? What’s wrong?” Gemma embraced him from behind as he was sat on the bed putting on his sneakers.
“What?” Rob got up from the bed, leaving Gemma’s arms empty.
“You seem like you’rles les away all of a sudden… something wrong?” Gemma got up from the bed as well and straightened out her top.
“No…uhm…no. Nothing’s wrong.” He looked down and ran his hands through his hair. “Wanna get out of here?” Looking over his shoulder and meeting her eyes, he felt like he could crumble before her eyes. He loved her too much and the situation seemed too complicated.
“Yeah… sure.” Gemma sent him a questioning look and walked to the door. “Your place or mine?” Rob looked away for a moment and sighed as he had been presented with the biggest dilemma. “Or maybe you want to be alone?” Her voice reached him, and the thought alone scared the hell out of him.
“NO!” He looked her dead in the eye and smiled weakly. “No… sorry. I want to be with you… I just don’t care where we go.”
“My place it is, then.” Gemma smiled as he approached her and they kissed softly and quickly on the lips.
Moving through the house, Gemma noticed the half opened door to bathbathroom and she caught a glimpse of Mike on the floor in deep conversation with Brad. It didn’t seem right. She couldn’t see his face, but something told her that he was crying. The shoulders were slightly bobbing. Rob must have seen them too, and took a hold of her hand, gently pulling her closer to his body. Slipping past the living room they both saw the empty beer cans on the table. They heard Joe and Phoenix having a discussion about something stupid. Chester came out from the kitcand and his eyes met with Rob’s for a short moment, but no one said anything.
Getting into the car, Gemma sat in the driver’s seat and looked over at Rob who looked worried and yet concerned.
“What’s wrong?” Gemma turned her whole body towards him and placed a hand on his knee.
“Just drive.” Rob’s eyes filled up with tears but he never once looked at her. The hand on his knee was burning through the fabric of his pants. He wanted to embrace her and confess to everythingt hat had been said between Mike and him earlier. But he couldn’t.
“Rob! Don’t do this to me.” Gemma’s hand squeezed his knee gently and she moved closer to him.
“Just drive. Please.” Rob looked at her and grabbed her hand, removing it from his knee and held on to it tight. “Please.” Tears were now slowly making their way down his cheeks. Sighing, she turned away from him, facing the road in front of them.
“What is this?” She said more to herself than him. “What’s going on?” Letting go of her hand, he turned away from her, looking up at the house where he knew Mike was in just as much pain.
Pulling away from the sidewalk and driving down the road, the two lovers sat in silence and felt the tension embrace them both as tears ran down their cheeks.
---
“Brad…” Mike sobbed, hardly being able to get the word pass his lips. “It’s so screwed up.”
“What happened?” Brad was still sitting next to Mike on the cold bathroom floor with his arms securely around his friend’s sobbing frame.
“We talked… he … I think he… “ Mike lowered his head and felt Brad’s chest against his forehead. Breathing heavily from the crying, he could hardly get the words out. “He… he…”
“He what, Mike?” Brad pulled him a little from his body and wiped the tears away from his chin.
“He kissed me. The bastard kissed me. “ Mike suddenly stopped crying as the previous anger returned ad made him feel cold.
“Rob kissed you?” Brad’s eyes were widened with shock. “Why… I mean… why?”
“Wanted to prove me wrong about how I felt…” Mike looked at the tiled wall in front of him and sighed.
“So… did he?” Brad noticed the quick change in Mike’s mood and wondered what was going on in his friend’s mind.
“I don’t know shit anymore.” Mike’s eyes showed honesty and frustration. “All I know is that I might have thrown something good away and I don’t know if I can get it back.”
“I’m so confused, man.” Brad shook his head and moved away from his position on the floor. Placing himself on the toilet seat, he sighed. “First of all… Rob kissed you? As in lips on lips?” Mike didn’t say anything, but nodded, his eyes locked with Brad’s. “And second of all… what did you lose? Rob? Or Gemz? What happened when she came?”
“I don’t know if I’ve lost Rob… or should I say I don’t know if Rob lost me tonight. He left without a word when Gemma came.” Mike was getting himself more and more riled up thinking about the coward way Rob got out of the whole conversation.
“Again I have to say… huh?” Brad rested his head in his hands and smoothed them over his newly shaved head. With a sigh, he looked back at Mike, who hadn’t made any sign to start talking. “Rob lost you? How?”
“As I said before… I don’t know shit right now. I’m just so angry with him right now. And if it’s something I’ll get over in no time, I don’t know. But the way I see it, he toyed with my emotions by kissing me. He must have seen how vulnerable I was.”
“So you told him everything, right?” Mike nodded once and Brad looked down for a second. “So… you’re afraid that you’ve lost his friendship now? And that you can’t get it back?” Mike pulled his legs up to meet his cheat and shook his head ‘no’.
“Anna…” Mike closed his eyes and suddenly flashing images of her came rushing over him.
“Anna? Anna!??” Brad’s eyes widened again and he barely knew what to say.
“Anna...” The minute Mike opened his eyes and they met with Brad’s, Brad knew that he didn’t need to hear more, he could tell from looking at Mike how great the need was.
“What about Rob?” The question was very carefully asked and Brad searched for the answer in Mike’s eyes, just in case he wasn’t ready to give it to him yet.
“Rob…” Mike blinked a couple of times and rested his chin on his knees. “Maybe I missed him too much as a friend that it confused me… or maybe there really is something. I’m not sure right I’m I’m too angry to think straight when it comes to Rob.” Brad chuckled quietly at the word ‘straight’ and looked at Mike’s serious eyes.
With a simple nod, Brad extended a hand to his friend and pulled him to his feet. Standing up as well, he placed his arms back around him and whispered.
“It’s going to be fine either way…” Padding him reassuringly on the back, the words brought comfort to Mike.
“Thanks, Brad. Thanks.”
