Chapter 26
David’s apartment - late the following morning
**************
“Is that all you’re gonna have?” David asked as James drank the last of his protein shake.
He turned around to see David taking a large bite out of a bacon bap.
“At least one of us has to eat healthily,” James replied.
David swallowed and smiled at him.
“Oh, I don’t have this every morning… not for breakfast… but this is more like brunch. Breakfast is usually just the muesli… and fruit of some kind… but this morning I woke up ravenous.”
“Me too,” James said, advancing on him. “Gimme a bite?”
*****************
They were just about to set off for the studio when the phone rang.
“You’ve got time to answer it,” James said checking his watch. “We’re not due on set until after lunch.”
David grabbed the phone on the hall table.
“It’s my folks,” he said, looking at the dis. “. “This won’t take long, Baby…”
James put his jacket on. Realising he’d left his scriptthe the kitchen he went to find it.
“You’re up early, Mom…”
*****************
“… I haven’t asked yet,” David was saying as James returned.
David mouthed, “Be with you in a minute,” as he listened.
“Okay, Mom. Love you too. Gotta go now or I’e lae late for work. Love to Dad and see you on Wednesday.”
David put the phone down and picked up his keys.
Wednesday? What was happening on Wednesday? David hadn’t mentioned anyns tns to see his mother. Shit! In all the excitement of moving in with David he’d completely forgotten…
“Thanksgiving?” James said.
“Yeah,” David replied grabbing his jacket and following James out the front door.
As James headed toward his own car he felt a hand on his shoulder.
“Don’t you wanna come with me?” David asked.
James did but he hadn’t liked to presume.
“You sure you don’t mind people seeing us?” he asked.
“Of course not, Baby. Not now we’re living together. If anyone can’t deal with it that’s their problem not ours.”
David unlocked his car and James got in “Yo “You’re going home for Thanksgiving?” James asked.
Silly question really. Who didn’t go home for Thanksgiving not that he relished the prospect himself. His mother still hadn’t forgiven him the shame of the divorce. He hated to think how she’d react to his present living arrangements.
“That’s up to you, Baby,” David replied. “You’re invited too. Mom and Dad are looking forward to meeting you…”
“You told them about us?” James asked in astonishment.
“Of course,” David said. “Why wouldn’t I?”
“I dunno… I just thought…”
James wasn’t really sure what he thought but he hadn’t expected David to mention their relationship to anyone let alone his parents. Not this soon. Of course, he realised he should be pleased. It must mean David was serious about them if he wanted him to meet his folks.
“I think Mom’s become quite a fan…” David said.
James frowned.
“Of Spike,” David added. “And I know she’ll like you too. They both will. I can’t wait for you to meet them and you’ll love the house. It’s out in the country… they have dogs and horses… Since Dad retired, they’ve been…”
“David,” James interrupted. “I’m sorry, I can’t come. Mother’s expecting me…”
“Oh.”
“… and I have to go alone… I’m sorry, Davy, but I can’t tell her about us. She wouldn’t understand…”
“You mean she wouldn’t approve?”
“That too,” James said, “But she wouldn’t understand either. She lives her life strictly in accordance with religious doctrine and she expects everyone else to. She regards my divorce as a sin against God…”
“We could stay home,” David said. “Spend the holiday together.”
“It’s the only time we get together as a family,” James said. “I have to go. My brother and sister and their families will all be there…”
“I’m sorry,” David said. “Of course, you must be looking forward to seeing your mother…”
“Not particularly. We haven’t really seen eye to eye in recent years… She disapproves of my lifestyle…”
James laughed.
“And that’s just the acting,” he added. “I don’t really wanna go but I have to. I’m expected and I do miss my sister.”
***************
David’s heart sank. He didn’t know what to say. He’d been so looking forward to taking James home and showing him off to the family he hadn’t stopped to think he might not want to come.
“It’s not that I don’t appreciate the invitation, David,” James said. “I really do… It must be great to have a family you actually enjoy spending time with. You’re so lucky…”
David hadn’t ever thought of it that way before. Perhaps he was lucky. He’d always taken it for granted his family would be there when he needed them. They’d always been very close. He couldn’t imagine only seeing his mother once a year especially when even that one visit was made with considerable reluctance… Poor James…
“What about your father? I know your parents are divorced but will you see him over the holiday?”
“I certainly hope not,” James said. “Haven’t seen him since he abandoned us when I was just a kid… Don’t expect to hear from him again. Not sure what I’d do if I did, after what he put my mother through…”
David wondered what the story behind that remark was but decided now was probably not the best time to ask.
