Chapter 26
Rob breathed in the fresh country air and grinned. It was a great thing, waking up and stepping outside your door without having to take a gun or worry about being eaten by zombies. Renee was sitting at the table eating some toast. Rob had insisted she and Grace would come stay with him. They spent the first night with his family, they had thought him dead, lost to the monsters that now inhabited the Western half of the hemisphere, the second night they stayed alone at Rob's apartment and became lovers. The Earth didn't move and neither heard Angels singing, it was frantic and desperate, both of them needing to feel alive and connected to someone. The next time was slower and sweeter and Renee cried in his arms after, overcome with emotion. She had made it out with her Grandmother and Rob...
“Morning Renee.” He said giving her a kiss.
“Hey Babe.” She answered, brushing her hand across his shoulder.
“What's the latest?” He asked pointing to the newspaper on the table in front of her.
“Well NORAD, what's left of it, wants to send troops out and see if they can reclaim one or two key cities in America...they want to capture some specimens to study.” She told him, a look of disgust on her face.
“Oh God, no. They need to kill them all before it spreads over here.” He was terrified that somehow despite all the precautions they were taking to prevent it, that somehow it would still happen. The night before he'd had a nightmare about having to shoot his little nephew Freddie because he was a zombie. It wasn't unusual, since getting back to Britain he had them almost every night and about the people he loved the most. He knew he should seek help but what could a psychiatrist really do for him? He had survived through it and he was thankful for it. He wanted to put it all behind him but the nightmares wouldn't let him, the memories that surfaced at odd moments and caused what should have been embarrassing reactions, taking communion at church and looking into the Priest's eyes and remembering the zombie priest from the airport in Maine. Suddenly Rob was crying and clutching at the Priest's robes.
But the paranoia Rob always had in the past about people out to get him or use him was still around however now it had a real tangible fear to worry about. He had purchased more guns, ammo and weapons then any normal person would ever need but he now knew better. His country home was a fortress now, always tight with security, he had bulked up his security, hiring Brad and Brody to aide Pompey. The fence that had surrounded the estate was taller and stronger now and had the capability of becoming electrified with the flick of a switch. They kept a huge bunker in the basement filled with supplies of food, clothes and medical supplies, a couple of generators sat waiting in case they needed power and there were drums of oil and gas stored safely in a separate shed near the garage.
No one voiced it but they all knew they were preparing...just in case.
