Chapter 26: It’s Love That’s Bigger than Us
∞♥♥∞
It was the evening of Valentine’s Day, and our friends were throwing us an engagement party. I was surprised that no one had anything already planned for that day. Especially Jordin. She was always busy with her career lately. A lot of us were actually. Though I didn’t think an engagement party was necessary—sweet, but not necessary—it was nice that we were all free and able to have this party. Furthermore, if we were going to have an engagement party, Valentine’s Day was the perfect day to have one.
Anyway, the gang was all there, including Shyamali and her new boyfriend, Jake. We were having it in the ball room of an LA hotel. Our friends had all pitched in and rented it out for the night. They had even hired a caterer and a DJ. It was nice.
“I can’t believe this is all for us,” I said, my arm around Chris as we watched our friends in various groups, laughing and having a good time.
He smiled, and placed his arm around me as well. “We’ve always been the most popular of the top ten. It’s because were cool,” he joked.
“And incredibly sexy,” I said, not joking at all.
“Speak for yourselves. I don’t see any sexy here—at least not when I look at you,” Sanjaya said, suddenly appearing seemingly out of nowhere. He was eating a banana, and hadn't bothered to swallow what was in his mouth when he talked.
I made a face and rolled my eyes. “And here I thought you were nice for helping to throw this engagement party for Chris and I.”
He shrugged. “I did it for Chris.” It came out, “I dif it for chrith,” since he had yet to swallow what was in his mouth.
“Gross! Will you please swallow that already? Man! How much do you have in your mouth?” I asked.
He swallowed it, and grinned at me. “Happy Engagement,” he said, extending his hand to me.
I smiled, and went to shake it. He could be a little less than a pain sometimes I guessed.
Before my hand could touch his, he brought it back and shook Chris’ hand instead.
I rolled my eyes. So much for him being a little less than a pain…

“Sanjaya! Stop picking at the food table! We’re supposed to wait until the caterers are ready,” Jordin said, coming over. She tried to take the remainder of Sanjaya’s banana from him, but Sanjaya pulled it out of her grasp.
“No use throwing it out,” he said. “You can’t give it to anyone else. You might as well let me finish. I was just having something to hold me off. Besides, Sligh is taking a whole lot more than I am.”
Jordin looked over to the buffet table, where Sligh was already picking things off it, and stuffing it into his mouth.
“Sligh! Stop that! What part of ‘wait until the caterers are ready for us to eat’ didn’t you understand?” Jordin rolled her eyes and let out an exasperated sigh. She turned her attention to Blake and I. “Sorry. You guys having fun?”
Blake and I both grinned and nodded.
“Of course, sweetie, thank you.” Blake kissed her cheek.
I hugged her. “Yeah, thank you for organizing all this for us.”
“The other’s helped a lot. Gina was a really big help.” She cast another glance at Sigh, who had run a finger through something. She let out another frustrated cry. “Excuse me,” she said to us before taking off to stop him.
Sanjaya had already taken off to who knew where in the ball room—probably to get another banana.
“Some people never change,” I said, as I watched Jordin pry Sigh away from the buffet table.
“Yeah, but we love them for it, so help us,” Blake said, also watching them.
I nodded. “Very true.”
“All right, we’re ready to serve dinner now. You may all take a seat, please.”
“Finally!” Sligh said from the buffet table as one of the caterers made the dinner announcement.
We all headed to the long table by the wall.
“You two get to sit right it the middle,” Gina said. She took Blake’s arm and led him to a chair on the side that had the backs facing the wall, and Haley took my arm, leading me to the chair right beside Blake’s.
Once we were all seated, the caterers told us to go up to the buffet one side at a time. Our side went first, and of course, everyone insisted on Blake and I being first in line.
We all got our food, and about ten minutes later we were all sitting down with our salads, soups, and main courses.
“I’m so happy you guys are getting married! I knew from the moment I started getting to know you two that you two were in love. You guys were so obvious. You all try to denied it. Thank God for that sex tape that forced you guys to tell the truth!” Gina said to us as we ate.
I blushed. “Please don’t remind me of that.”
“Or me. I have that thing locked up good in a safe box now,” Blake told her.
“Can you imagine if your mom found the tape?” Melinda asked.
“Oh my gosh, I would die,” I said, shuttering at the thought.
“Did you guys ever make another one per chance?” Haley spoke up.
“No. Why? Would you like us to?” Blake asked, getting that sly look on his face that always meant trouble.
“I’ll pay you fifty bucks for one,” she said. “Just stay out of my makeup bag this time.”
“I’ll give you a hundred,” Gina added. She turned to Haley. “And will you get off that already? They used my eyeliner, and you don’t see me complaining still. It was for a good cause, not to mention it was over two years ago!”
“I’m just saying,” Haley said, looking away. “My lipstick was more expensive than your eyeliner was anyway.”
“It’s not like we didn’t buy you a new one,” I said.
“I know. Forget I said anything,” Haley held up her hands. “But I’m serious about that fifty bucks thing.”
“And I’m serious about the hundred bucks,” Gina added.
Melinda made a face. “They are our friends. That doesn’t gross you out to see a sex tape of them?”
Gina and Haley looked at each other, and then at her before answering in unison. “Nope!”
“You already saw us live in the kitchen at that party we had anyway, so what are you complaining about?” I asked Gina and Haley.
“We didn’t get it on tape,” Gina said.
Haley nodded. “Yeah. We want something to watch over and over again.”
Melinda rolled her eyes, but smiled. “You guys should make a sex tape and sell it to the fans. You’d make even more than you’re making now, I bet ya.”
“And we’ll be first in line to buy it,” Gina said.
Haley nodded.
Melinda made a face. “You two will. Not me. I don’t watch porno—especially not porno staring my friends.”
“Well, if we do make another sex tape, it will be private. I’m sorry,” I said. I couldn’t take the embarrassment of anyone seeing another sex tape of us.
“Don’t be so hasty. Melinda’s right. We could make some big bucks off one of those,” Blake said.
I shot him a look. “This coming from someone who got to angry when everyone saw our first sex tape.”
“That was before everyone knew about us. Now that they all know about us, or will soon, we might as well make some money off of it.”
I continued to give him a look.
He laughed, and held his hands up in surrender. “What? I’m kidding, baby. Don’t worry. I like our privacy as much as you do.”
Gina and Haley both pouted.
“You’re no fun,” Haley said.
I grinned at her. “Oh yes, he is. It’s just that you’re not going to be able to see it again.”
Haley’s mouth dropped open, and Blake nearly choked on his drink.
Gina laughed, and high-fived me.
I grinned. I could be cunning when I wanted to be.

There was a break for dancing before dessert. The caterers wanted time to clear off the tables and put away the buffet.
The DJ was playing all of mine and Chris’ favorite music, and I was enjoying dancing with everyone. I was determined to dance with all the girls. There were thirty of us there. It was the top ten, Brandon, Ace, Shyamali, Shyamali’s boyfriend, Sanjaya’s boyfriend, Sligh’s wife, Phil’s wife, Haley’s husband, Gina’s husband, and LaKisha’s fiance. Finally, there was five of my friends: Cisco, Ethan, Andrea, Kristi, and Ginger, and five of Chris’ friends: Blue, MaDookie, Jorge, Antonetta, and Lauren. That left me fourteen girls to dance with. I was so ready for it!
Maroon 5’s “This Love” was playing, and I started off dancing with Kristi, who was a really good dancer. I knew her even back in my school days, so of course she was my first choice. I finished off the song by dancing with Andrea, who was another good friend. She was a good dancer too; just not as good as Kristi.
I danced with two women per song, and tried to pair the girls up according to what they could dance best to. I found out that MaDookie was good at dancing hip-hop. She had some moves. It was fun dancing with her. Although Chris and I had been together so long, I hadn’t ever really gotten a chance to know her. Of course she and I had talked before, but it was nothing like tonight. Now we were able to chill with each other and have fun. We got to know each other better, and I was glad. Since I was going to be marrying Chris, I wanted to know his friends. I wanted his friends to be mine, and my friends to be his.
When I got to Shyamali, we ground against each other just for the fun of it. It was just our way of dancing together. We always danced together like that. Everyone has their own style of dancing together, and that was ours.
I glanced over at Chris, who was dancing with Lauren. They were dancing a little too close for my taste. She was grinding her backside up against his front, and his hands were on her hips. I bit my bottom lip. I knew he had no feelings for her in the way that the media liked to say he did. Even so, it was making my blood boil watching them together like that.
I turned my attention back to Shyamali, trying my best not to think about it. However, my eyes kept wandering back to the way Chris was dancing with Lauren. She had turned around now, and their arms were resting over the other’s shoulders. They were staring into each other’s eyes, and they had the slightest smirks on their lips. He whispered something in her ear, and she laughed. That did it for me. I couldn’t stand by and watch them flirt any longer. I gently took Shyamali’s wrist in my hand, and dragged her over to Chris and Lauren. “Switch partners!” I said.
Lauren looked like she was about to dance with me, but I shook my head. “No, I mean you with Shyamali and me with Chris.” I kissed Shyamali’s hand, and then shoved it into Lauren’s hand. Finally, I grabbed Chris’ hand and dragged him away from the girls.
“What was that all about?” Chris asked, looking amused.
“I couldn’t stand by and watch you continue to flirt with Lauren,” I confessed.
He smirked. “I was flirting with her? What about the way you were grinding up against Shyamali? You know I hate when you do that.”
I thought about it for a moment. He had a point, but only sort of. “That’s different. She has a boyfriend.”
“Lauren has one too. He just couldn’t make it tonight.”
I looked up at him. “She does?”
Chris nodded, still smiling, and looking amused. “You were jealous, weren’t you?”
I looked down at the floor. “I trust you. I just don’t like seeing your hands all over someone else, or theirs all over you for that matter.”
He moved my chin up with his index finger so that I was forced to look in his eyes. “We weren’t doing anything more than you and Shyamali were.”
It dawned on me then. “Were you jealous too? Were you dancing that way with Lauren to make me jealous?”
He was smiling so big, I was sure he was on the verge of laughing now. “I might have been.”
I laughed then, as did he.
“I have an idea. How about, from now on, we only dance like that with each other?” I suggested.
He nodded. “I know you. You’re just being you dancing that way. You can still dance with girls, just...try to tone it down a little—at least in front of me. “I’ll do the same for you.”
I nodded too. “Deal. Now dance with me, fool.”
He laughed, and took my hand. “You got it!”
We then went further out onto the dance floor and danced to Jamiroquai’s “Virtual Insanity”.

“All right, attention everybody! It’s time for a video while you eat your dessert,” Jordin said, standing up in front of a blank screen that had been set up. It was like the screens they have for slideshows at home.
“It’s not another Chris and Blake sex tape is it? If it is, I am so out of here,” Sligh called out.
Everyone but Blake and I laughed. He and I were both too busy blushing to laugh.
Jordin shook her head. “No, it is not, silly! This is something you all contributed to. I’d like to give a special thanks to Cisco for making this DVD for us all to watch.
Cisco stood up and took a bow, moving his hand forward in a circular motion to encourage more cheers. We had all started cheering when he stood up, but he wanted more cheers. He got them, because well, he was Cisco, and Cisco gets what he wants.
When Cisco had sat back down, and everyone was calm again, Jordin spoke again. “This is a collection of pictures starting from the day you two met. I’d like to thank every one of you guys for contributing the pictures, or in Blake and Chris’ case, being the subject of the photos. Now let’s all sit back and enjoy the show of three years of love.” She pressed play on the video box, and then sat back down in her chair.
One of the caterers must have tuned the lights off for her, for everything suddenly went dark. Finally, a song began to play. The opening credits said the song was “One in a Million” by Hannah Montana. Then, pictures of Blake and I on the day we met showed up, followed by many more pictures of us in chronological order.
How did I get here? I turned around and there you were. I didn’t think twice or rationalize, but somehow I knew that there was more than just chemistry. I mean I know you were kinda of in to me, but I figured its just too good to be true.
“You guys took a picture? I didn’t even notice!” Blake said as a picture of him and I kissing our first kiss—the one we had been dared to do—flashed on the screen.
“That one was mine. I thought I’d use it for blackmail later, but you were nice to me back then, so I decided against it,” Sanjaya said.
Blake and I both smiled.
“I didn’t even notice you taking it either. I want a copy of that,” I said.
Blake nodded in agreement.
I said pinch me. Where’s the catch this time? Can’t find a single cloud in the sky. Help me before I get used to this guy. They say that good things take time, but really great things happen in the blink of an eye. I thought the chances to meet somebody like you were a million to one. I cannot believe it. Oh, oh… You’re one in a million.
I smiled when I saw pictures of me onstage singing, and Blake watching me from the sidelines, appearing to only be seeing me. I thought of what my mom had said about me being the only one Blake sees. Maybe she was right. I kind of liked that thought. There were also pictures of me watching Blake perform. I was smiling so brightly. I really looked happy. I was, I realized. Being with Blake always made me happy.
All this time a was looking for love, trying to make things work. They weren’t good enough till I thought I'm through, said I'm done, then stumbled into the arms of the one.
Next, there were pictures of Blake and I with our arms around each other. There were ones of us writing songs together, and even one of Katharine McPhee in the room with Blake and I in the background. We were paying no attention to her, but rather each other. We didn’t care about the pretty girl—we only had eyes for each other even back then.
Blake and I both laughed when we saw a picture that looked like she was trying to get our attention in it. Of course, he and I were totally oblivious of it in the picture.
I reached over and took Blake’s hand in mine. He gently squeezed it, and we smiled at each other before going back to looking at the pictures.

Your making me laugh about the silliest stuff. Said that I'm your diamond in the rough. When I’m mad at you, you come with your velvet touch. Can't believe that I'm so lucky. I have never felt so happy every time I see that sparkle in your eyes.
The song was a little cheesy, but at the same time, it was sweet. Even I had to admit that the lyrics seemed to fit Chris and I. I had no doubt in my mind that Jordin had picked the song out.
The pictures were making me feel good inside.
I squeezed Chris hand again as pictures of us kissing in our room came on the screen. It appeared that Chris and I had some paparazzi in the midst of our friends. I figured it was either Phil or his wife. In the apartment we had stayed in while on the show, Phil had had the room right next to ours and could get to our room by simply going through the main room to ours. Well, that was only if our room door was open, which it sometimes was. His wife stayed with him in his room a lot.
“All right, who took that one?” I asked.
Sure enough, Phil’s wife held up her hand. “That would be me. Sorry. Phil and I were about to go out. I realized once we were leaving the building that I had forgotten my purse. I came back in to get it. You two were kissing in your room, and didn’t even notice me. You looked so sweet and in love. I couldn’t resist snapping a picture. I never said anything because I figured it wasn’t my place.”
Chris smiled. “It’s all right,” her told her, his eyes still on the screen.
“Yeah, I’m glad you didn’t tell anyone, and I’m glad you took the picture. It made for a nice part of the video,” I said, my eyes never leaving the screen either.
They say that good things take time, but really great things happen in the blink of an eye. Thought the chances to meet somebody like you were a million to one. I can't believe it. Oh woah. Your one in a million. Yeah, yeah. All this time a was looking for love, trying to make things work. They weren’t good enough till I thought I'm through, said I'm done, then stumbled into the arms of the one.
There were pictures of Chris smiling so brightly as he watched me perform on the finale. He was cheering, and looking so proud. It made my heart swell. I loved him so much, and seeing how much he loved me… It almost brought me to tears. However, I was not about to cry and embarrass myself in front of all my friends. No thank you. Even so, it felt good to see how much he loved me. I knew he did, but to see it was the greatest feeling in the world. I knew I would never forget it.

I said pinch me. Where’s the catch this time? I can’t find a single cloud in the sky. Help me before I get used to this guy.
They had moved on to pictures of me in the car, headed to the after party with Blake and his friends. I grinned as I saw us sitting close together in the back of the car. I had insisted on sitting next to him that night. I was so proud of him. Please excuse the cliche, but even though he technically hadn’t won that night, he was still a winner to me. He had won my heart. I had fallen head over heels for that boy, and there had been no way to stop me.
They say that good things take time. But really great things happen in the blink of an eye. Thought the chances to meet somebody like you were a million to one. I can't believe it. Oh woah. Yeah, yeah.
There were pictures of us dancing at the after party. We were trying to make it look like we weren’t dancing together, but it was so obvious that we were.
There were tour pictures next. They were innocent enough. There were ones of us skateboarding and hanging out together, giving each other loving smiles. The more I watched, the more surprised I became that our friends hadn’t found out about us before they did.
There was even a picture of us making out on my bunk.
“Another blackmail picture,” Sanjaya said before Blake or I had a chance to ask who took it.
“We should have closed the curtain. No wonder we always got caught,” Blake muttered.
I shook my head and laughed, amused. That tour was the best. Blake and I couldn’t keep our hands of each other during it. Heck, we still couldn’t; we had just gotten better at waiting until no one was there to catch us.
Watching the video was making me fall in love with Blake all over again, and I knew that this love was never going to end—not that there had ever been any question.
B∞C
The video was so great. I hoped that Jordin had a copy for Chris and I. It was definitely something to cherish forever, I knew.
They say that good things take time. But really great things happen in a blink of an eye. Thought the chances to meet somebody like you were a million to one. I cannot believe it. Oh woah. Your one in a million. Yeah. One in a million. Yeah. You’re one in a million…
The video ended with a picture of Chris and I kissing on the lips. We had actually been posing for that one, and our lips were puckered way out to kiss the other. That picture was directly followed by one of us with our arms around each other, smiling brightly at the camera.
Everyone—Chris and I included—clapped when the video ended.
Chris and I both got up and walked over to Jordin. She stood up and I kissed one cheek, while Chris kissed the other. Then we took turns hugging her.
“Thank you all so much. That video was great. I loved it!” Chris said.
I nodded. “Yes, thank you. Do we get a copy?”
Jordin nodded. “Yep!” She took the DVD out of the player, and put it in a case. Its cover was the last picture of Chris and I kissing. It had green text with a brown background behind the text. The text read: Celebrating three years of love. Congratulations Cake on your engagement.
Chris and I both smiled. Cake had been the couple name given to us way back when we were still on the show.
We took turns hugging each and one of our friends. We really did have the best friends in the world, and for that, I was forever grateful.
B∞C
“Thank you for the engagement gift, guys. This party was the best, as is the video,” I said. Of course, the party itself was the engagement gift since everything added up to be a lot of money.
“Don’t mention it! You’re our friends. We wanted to do this for you,” Phil said, placing an arm around Blake and I.
Our friends all nodded.
“I still can’t believe you didn’t tell me they were a couple. So you were the first to know?” Phil asked his wife.
“I’m sorry, but Sligh is your bet friend, and you tell him everything. Sligh blabs. I didn’t want to risk you telling Sligh, and him accidently blabbing.”
“Hey! I’m good at keeping secrets,” Sligh said.
“Then how did Stephanie find out I said her hair was too short for her?” Brandon asked him. “You were the only one around when I made that comment.”
Sligh blushed. “It was an accident!”
Brandon gave him look.
Sligh blushed again. “Point taken.”
Phil, his wife, Blake, and I all laughed.
“Well, thank you.” Blake said to our friends. “For everything.”
Blake and I then took turns hugging our friends, and kissing the girls’ cheeks. We exchanged goodbyes with everyone, and then we headed back to the house.
That morning, Blake and I had given each other Valentine’s Day cards and presents, and we were now eager to use the presents. He had given me see-thru boxer briefs, which he was eager to see me model for him, and I had given him some more edible massage oils, which I was eager to use on him. We had also stocked up on bubble bath too, and were planning on lighting some candles, turning off the lights, and putting on some soft music while we made the best of our bubble bath.
“You know, that video really made me love you even more than I already do, if that’s possible.” Blake said to me.
I grinned. “Same here. It was good to see we had chemistry from day one. Though I kind of already knew that.”
He leaned over and kissed me. “I really do love you.”
I looked over at him just for a second, then back to the road. “I love you too, baby. I’m going to show you how much as soon as we get home.”
He sat back in his chair.
I looked in the review mirror, and smiled when I saw that he was looking out the window and smiling. I silently thanked God, for at that moment, I honestly felt like the luckiest man in the world. To me, I was.
