To everyone's dismay, Ville left shortly after the New Year. The party had been a blast, starting at six o clock New Year's Eve and lasting until six o clock in the evening the day after.
Lenny drove with them to the airport, sitting in back with Ville, her arms wrapped around his waist. The mood was somber as they pulled up to the airport.
“I hate it when you leave.”
“I know,” Ville stroked Lenny's hair. “I'll be back before you know it.
Maybe you two can come to Helsinki and visit me, hmm?”
He kissed them both goodbye. Lenny climbed into the front seat and watched him walking into the terminal. Bam started the car and pulled away, his
girlfriend still pressing her face against the glass.
“It makes it hard.”
“I know,” he agreed softly.
They drove through the January slush. Lenny put her feet against the dashboard, hugging her knees to her chest. Bam didn't even bother to turn on the radio, knowing neither one of them would be listening to it.
“Hey, babe?”
“What?”
“When are you going to teach me to drive?” he turned from the road to stare at her for a second.
“When am I going to teach you to DRIVE?”
“Yeah. I'm almost twenty one. Isn't it time for me to get a license?”
“You know, there's a really nice driver's training program....” Bam trailed off, instantly feeling nervous. Driving in a car with Lenny? It just sounded like suicide.
“But I don't want one of them to teach me. I want you to do it!” she was whining a little bit.
“We'll talk about it when the snow melts, okay?” Bam told her. She shut up and sat back, seeming to be satisfied with that answer.
Thank God New England winters lasted such a long time, Bam thought to himself as he steered them towards the Castle. It would be weeks before it got warm enough, and by then she would have forgotten all about it.
**
Two weeks later, the snow was gone. It wasn't even particularly cold out. Blame global warming, Bam thought to himself as he stared out the window. It hadn't been long enough for Lenny to have forgotten what she said. She was going to ask for a lesson, and then he'd probably die.
Sure enough, Helena came skipping merrily down the stairs. She launched herself at him, and he caught her with a cringe. She was positively beaming. He couldn't even find it inside of him to fake a cold or something so he could just—not teach her until he felt better. Maybe by then it would be cold again.
“Bam, the snow's all gone!”
“Yippee,” he sighed.
“You said we could talk about driving when the snow was gone.”
“Yes, I did say that.” and I wish I could shove it back in my mouth, he didn't add.
“So can we? Can we, please? Hardly anyone every drives on this road. Can we please?” she begged. Bam hesitated and Lenny turned on her big sad eyes. He groaned and nodded. No way could he ever resist the sad eyes. Her gray eyes got wide and started to glimmer with tears.
And she knew that he could never say no when she turned them on. He was a sucker when it came to Helena.
“Sure. Go get dressed and I'll pull the car around.” he mumbled. Lenny squealed before heading up the stairs.
“Taking her driving?” Dico sipped his coffee. Bam didn't bother to answer, only slumped against the counter with his head resting on his arms. Dico giggled before scurrying off, only to return with a silver helmet that he settled on Bam's head.
“There! Now we at least won't have to scrape your brain off the road.”
Bam's girlfriend came back down the stairs. Bam grabbed the keys and went to get the car while she waiting impatiently by the road.
***
“Okay, just try to go straight. Do you think you can do that?” Bam asked, strapping himself into the passenger side. He wondered just how affective seat belts really were. Maybe if he duct taped himself in too, he'd feel better. Then again, the rescue team would have a harder time cutting him out if he did that.
“Yes, Bam, I can go straight.” Lenny muttered. She gripped the wheel, pressed on the gas and—nothing happened.
“What?” she asked, stomping the pedal several times. The car never moved. She looked at her boyfriend. “It won't go.”
“Take it out of park, hon.” Bam closed his eyes.
“Oh. Oh!” Lenny yanked on the gear shift and pressed the gas. They tooled along at about ten miles an hour. But the smile on her face could have lit up a room. Bam watched her concentrating on the road until they got to the corner. She carefully flicked on her turn signal and steered them into the turn.
“You're doing well.”
“You think so?” she giggled. Bam nodded. Apparently, this was the code for her to slam on the gas. They were speeding now and Lenny turned to look at him.
“What kind of car is this, anyway?”
“Eyes on the road, Lenny, eyes on the road!” he yelped, ready to grab the wheel at anytime. She was going to kill the both of them.
“You know, I never really understood why people said to do that. I know where the road is. I don't have to watch it every second.”
“That's it! Pull over, I'm driving!” Bam cried. Lenny pouted as she pulled the car over and put it into park. They swapped places by her sliding over his lap. She leaned against the door on the way home.
“Thanks for taking me. I can't wait for the next lesson.” she said, pecking him on the cheek when he pulled into the driveway.
“Me neither!” he sighed, trying to look cheerful. Secretly, he was wondering how much his insurance was worth.
