‘Look this is it, there’s Jo and Dougal’ said Corey as he slowed the hired 2ltr Vauxhall Astra into a small off road track he saw Jo standing in with her comically named dog. How anyone who owned a 190lb Rottweiler could name if after the little dog that resembled a mop in the classic kids TV show was beyond both him and Jim.
Parking up by the side of the house Jim got out and walked over to Jo, pulling her into a bone crunching hug and fussing Dougal atop his head. She had been walking her dog in the late afternoon drizzle when Jim had called her, telling her they were pretty damn lost and after talking them back around from three miles in the wrong direction she had waited out front for them to arrive.
‘Hey gorgeous, how you been?’ he asked.
‘Alright considering, how’s you big fella? And fuck me you’ve got even bigger! Are those actual muscles I feel?’ said Jo, giving the top of his arm a squeeze.
‘I started boxing’ said Jim with a little smile.
‘I pity your opponents’ said Jo with a laugh.
‘Just the bag that gets the brunt of my aggression at the moment’ said Jim as Corey joined them in walking through the gate onto the stable yard at the back of Jade’s home.
‘So how’s our girl?’ asked Corey as they walked across the yard to the house, Jo waving at Bob and Jade’s Cousin Alicia who had come to work for her.
‘I have no idea, and the Scandinavian twat isn’t being a lot of use either’ said Jo, making both Jim and Corey laugh. To them she made no secret of the fact she didn’t like Stefan, but kept it to herself whenever he or Jade was around.
‘And why would that be’ asked Corey.
‘Because he won’t let anyone go and see her. Says she needs time on her own and that’s what he’s giving her when we all know that when Jade says she wants to be alone, she really doesn’t’ said Jo. Corey and Jim then both pulled the same stony face at the same time as they reached the back door, Corey rapping the glass pane sharply.
‘Oh, hey guys. What are you doing here?’ asked Stefan as he opened the door.
‘It’s called an intervention, move’ said Corey, passing him on his way into the house.
‘Erm, Corey you can’t just barge into my house!’ said Stefan, walking quickly to catch up with him.
‘Correction, Jade’s house. I know Hilde took you to the cleaners in your divorce and I know that because of that Jade owns this place outright. So yes I can just barge in because my friend is up there and she needs me. I don’t wanna argue with you Stefan, you just found out you’ve lost a kid and that must be hard enough, but if my friend needs me I’m there, deal with it’ said Corey as he pointed at Stefan. He didn’t have a comeback to Corey’s words, so simply let him, Jo, Jim and Dougal pass and went back to the kitchen muttering to himself as they ascended the stairs.
When they reached her bedroom door Jo tried the handle to find it locked, so saw if she could get any response by talking.
‘Jade honey, it’s me. Jim and Corey are with me too, we’re all worried about you sugar, open the door’ said Jo, listening carefully but not hearing a sound on the other side. Both Jim and Corey then tried to talk to her to no avail. No noise was made, and the door remained locked.
‘So help me god, if she’s done anything stupid I’ll fucking break Stefan’s face’ said Jo, fishing in her pocket for her pen knife and pulling it out to slide up a small thin knife. She then crouched down and slid it into the lock, working it this way and that to shift the levers into an opening position.
‘Mingling with the lock picking trash now are we?’ Joked Corey with a raised eyebrow.
‘From an old English padlock to a seven figure mortise lock, I can pick it. Let’s just say I wasn’t on the complete straight and narrow once upon a time’ said Jo, waggling the knife around to the left as the last lever sprang up and the door opened. They had to adjust their eyes to the dark as they made their way inside the dim room, at first not being able to see her. Jo pulled open the curtains on the far side of the room and the light from outside was shed onto a little waiflike figure in the corner, pale, thin and eyes completely glazed over as she sat with her knees hugged up to her chest.
‘Jade?’ Corey said, crouching at her side and waving his hand in front of her eyes. They didn’t even flicker, and Corey wasn’t sure she even knew he was there. Jo immediately began to search the room for drug paraphernalia and pill bottles with Dougal at her heels, feeling relieved when all she found was empty vodka bottles and half smoked joints in the overflowing ashtrays. Jim walked over to her and gently closed his hands around her wrists, pulling her up from the floor.
‘Come on you, time to stand up’ he said as he guided her towards the big bed, eventually picking her up and placing her down, and then lying next to her where she immediately curled into him and clung on like a little limpet; just like she had when Jamie had died. It was then that Corey and Jo said the exact same thing to each other without ever saying a word as they exchanged knowing glances.
‘He’s the one who knows how to look after her, not Stefan’.
Pleased that she had at least made some small response Jo had an idea on how to improve things more. Excusing herself she went downstairs and into the huge lounge, heading over to the shelf to retrieve the black DVD cases that held every single disc of VCR footage from every single tour she had ever been on. Taking the cases she needed Jo ran back upstairs and into the bedroom, turning on the TV and firing up the DVD player into life as Corey picked up bottles off the floor and emptied ashtrays into the bin, also flinging dirty clothes into a pile in the corner. Taking the remote with her Jo walked back over to the bed and sat down on the other side of Jade, putting a hand on her thigh as she pressed play.
‘I would say at this time all we need to do is think of happy memories of Dime, but instead let’s just watch some’ she said as the images began to flicker across the screen. Jade turned her head from Jim’s chest and watched as the memories of the man she adored flashed across the screen, and eventually along with the other three people in the room began to laugh as she viewed the disc, from her and Dime singing ‘Hotel California’ whilst pissed out of their heads on the back of the Pantera tour bus, to him pushing her down a flight of stairs on a skateboard to see how far she could make it (down the stairs, across the lobby and out the door for the record), to her, Dime and his brother Vinnie all playing GI Joe with greased up faces crawling across a patch of grass on their fronts armed with machine gun style water pistols full of hot pepper sauce to attack their unsuspecting victims, it was all there. Everything she remembered in her head that related to Dime.
She didn’t actually speak until an hour into the disc, when suddenly the images of her joining Pantera on stage at the monsters of rock festival in Moscow to play the solo of ‘Domination’ with Dime, after much persuasion from the latter to actually get her to do it.
‘I’d have never of been able to do that if he hadn’t have been standing by my side’ said Jade, smiling at the screen just as she finished to a deafening roar from the crowd, the audio just about picking up Dime tell her ‘I’m so fucking proud of you’. He had been the one to teach her how to play guitar as well as she could.
‘Hey she’s back, come here dude’ said Corey as he climbed across the bed from the foot and gave her a hug and kiss. ‘I love you, you know that right?’ he continued, rubbing her back with his hand and giving her cheek a few more kisses.
‘I love you too, thanks for coming to see me, and you, and you’ she said, then addressing Jo and Jim, hugging and kissing them both. They sat upstairs until the sun started to draw in, and after having a shower and a much needed change of clothes (with Jo’s kind help since she was still sore from the small procedure she had to have to remove her of the last of her pregnancy tissues after the miscarriage) Jade decided she couldn’t hide away anymore so showed Corey and Jim to the guest rooms so they could put their bags down, and then went downstairs. She found Stefan in the kitchen looking tense, and immediately went to him and gave him a huge hug.
‘You look a little better baby’ he said as he held his wife, stroking the back of her neck.
‘I feel it too, thanks to these guys’ said Jade, turning in his arms to flash her friends a little smile. Seeing her like that in his arms, Jim had to turn away so excused himself to go for a cigarette and headed out of the back door, followed by Jo who guessed there was another reason apart from nicotine that made him want to be absent from the kitchen at that moment. Since there was strictly no smoking on the stable yard because of the fire hazard it posed with all the hay and straw Jo guided Jim out of the gate and walked across the uneven off road driveway that divided her home from Jade’s and leant against an old stone wall as she lit up, Dougal lying down faithfully at her feet.
‘Admit it, you can’t stand to see her with him like that can you?’ said Jo, exhaling a thick plume of smoke into the near darkness of the cold December night.
‘No because I know he makes her happy and that’s all I want for her. But I just can’t help thinking....................... What if?’ replied Jim.
‘You wouldn’t be the only one to think that. I can see how much easier her life would have been over the last few years if she’d have been with you, and so did someone else. But if I tell you, you can’t breathe a word’ said Jo as Jim nodded.
‘Dime liked Stefan about as much as I do, and he always said if she’d have got with you then most of the shit that’s happened to her would have been avoided. But you see now he’s gone, it isn’t my place to tell her that, the only man who could have can’t for obvious reasons, but there is one lady whose place it is more than anyone’s to tell her’ said Jo, in reference to Dime’s partner and more or less common law wife Rita. And indeed Rita did voice her concerns to Jade after the funeral a few days later, which was attended by all bar Stefan, who said he would stay behind to look after Jamie. Even though Jules had offered.
Sitting alone together on the porch of Dime’s parent’s house long after the wake Rita finally let Jade know what Dime had kept to himself for so long, out of fear of upsetting her more than anything.
‘Jade darlin’, I know this might be hard to hear now that he’s gone and you can’t discuss it with him, but there’s something Dime kept from you over the last few years I think you should know. I think now is the time he’d want me to tell you too’ Rita began, taking a swig of her Miller.
‘Okay’ said Jade after swallowing a mouthful of her JD and coke. Rita took a deep breath and a long drag on her cigarette before continuing.
‘You see the thing is petal, Dime hated Stefan, and up until the day he died he always said it was Jim you should have been with, and who he wanted to see you with. And you know I agree with him hon, by no means am I trying to pick at your marriage but take a look at who came out here with you to support you, and then take a look at who let his wife travel thousands of miles to bury her friend without the support of her loving husband by her side. That’s all I’m saying’ said Rita, her thick Texan gravelly voice softening almost beyond recognition. She got up out of Dime’s father’s rocking chair and gave Jade a pat on the shoulder as she passed by and back into the house, leaving Jade just sitting there staring out into the dark Texan night.
She sank the rest of her drink in one gulp, hearing her dearly departed friends’ words being reiterated to her via his partner had hit her hard, and she thought to herself that this really was one time she could do with Dime being sat next to her too.
