"You're nuts," Ashley nodded as they sat on the floor in her bedroom. "You know that?"
"I'm not nuts," Kelly rolled her eyes.
"It's like you're a leach, sucking the life from me," Ashley quoted the lyrics that Kelly had typed up.
"Ok, so maybe it's a little twisted," Kelly shrugged. "But you can't say that you don't like it."
"No, I do," Ashley replied. "I don't know, it's just always funny to me how in the world these lyrics can come from such a happy, spastic, dork of a kid."
"I'm not a kid."
Ashley eyed her hair that was pulled up into messy pig-tails.
"Shut up," Kelly mumbled.
"It's like I can't breathe, without you inside of me," Ashley continued to read. She gazed up at her, studying her carefully. "Is there something you want to tell me?"
"What? That's a hot line."
"I know," Ashley nodded. "So who have you felt inside of you?"
Kelly turned bright red, pulling the piece of paper away from her, "It's not like that."
"Ok, then who have you imagined inside of you?" Ashley sat up straight.
"Ash, it's just a song."
"Bull," she frowned.
"I don't see what the big deal is. Y'all are always talking about sex."
"Yea, but coming from you..."
"You know what? Just forget it," Kelly shook her head, pushing the tape recorder out of the way as she stood.
"No, Kelly, I'm sorry," Ashley stood up with her.
"I'm not some innocent kid, you know?"
"Kelly..." she sighed.
"No, I'm serious. I'm tired of y'all treating me like I'm still twelve. Just because I don't find the need to sleep with whatever hot guy I see, doesn't mean..."
"Doesn't mean what?"
"Nothing," Kelly shook her head, shoving the lyrics into her back pack.
"What about the song?"
"I'll just get Carrie to help me."
"Carrie?"
"Yea, she loves the song."
"You let her hear it?" Ashley questioned, not caring how petty she sounded.
"Yea."
"But she doesn't know how--"
"It's not that hard to press record," Kelly pointed out. "Look, I'm just gonna walk. I'll see you at school."
"Fine, later."
Kelly nodded, walking down the hall and out of the house.

Kelly sighed as she walked down her best friend's driveway to the sidewalk. She looked up as she felt something hit the top of her head.
"Oh, come on," she grumbled as it started to rain. "You've gotta be shitting me."
The rain started to pour harder, and Kelly wrapped her arms tightly around herself, trying to stay as warm and as dry as possible--it was a good twenty minute walk to her apartment. For a moment, she contemplated going to Ashley's, but she shut down that idea pretty quick, not wanting to have to continue the argument.
She heard a car coming up from behind, and she tensed, waiting for the splash of water that would probably come, but instead she realized that the car was slowing down.
"Hey you...you running away?" a voice called out.
Kelly turned to find Carrie driving along side her with the passenger window down. "What are you doing all the way over here?"
"You told me to come pick you up at five, remember?" Carrie said, pulling the car to a stop. "Isn't Ashley's car in the shop or something?"
"Yea," Kelly nodded, remembering asking the Oklahoma native for a ride during school.
"So...you gonna get in, or are you just gonna stand out there and get soaked all day?"
Kelly gave a short laugh as she got in the car, rolling the window back up.
Carrie turned the heater up and reached in the back seat for a towel that she gave to the Texan, "There you go."
"Thanks."
"So, want to tell me why you decided to go for a walk on this lovely day?" Carrie smiled as she started to drive.
"I forgot you were coming pick me up."
"Ah," Carrie nodded. "And that tone in your voice--just because you're upset about the rain, or what?"
"I love the rain," Kelly shook her head.
"So...?"
"I got in a fight with Ashley."
"About what?"
"Some lyrics to a song I wrote...the fact that they treat me like a child sometimes...you."
"Me?"
"Yea," Kelly nodded thoughtfully. "I didn't really think about it at first, but she seemed to be upset when I mentioned you."
"In what context?"
"Um, well, ok, so when I write a song, Ashley's like my producer."
"She knows a lot about music?"
"No, but she has a tape recorder. Anyway, we were going to record a song today, but she was totally giving me shit for it."
"Why?"
"She had a problem with the lyrics."
"What was wrong with them?"
"Nothing, other than the fact that I wrote them," Kelly replied. "That's when we got into the discussion of her treating me like a kid."
"And I entered this conversation, how?" Carrie asked curiously.
"I told her just to forget it, that I'd just get you to help me because you loved the song."
"Have I heard the song?"
"Part of it...it's the one you heard me singing in the choir room."
"Oh, I do love that song."
"Yea, well, she wasn't too thrilled about the fact that you had heard it before she did apparently."
"Well, it's not like you willingly let me listen to it," Carrie pointed out.
"You don't have to justify me," Kelly shook her head. "I don't feel guilty."
"I'm not justifiying you, baby," she laughed as she pulled to a stop in front of the apartment complex. "I'm telling you that I understand."
"Whatever. The point is that you did love the song, and you didn't give me hell because of the lyrics. And I thought we discussed this nickname thing, already."
"Did I hear the part that she was talking about?"
"I don't know."
"Either way, I'm sure it's great."
Kelly looked at her, almost shyly, "You wanna come inside and see?"
"Yea," Carrie nodded. "Sure."

Kelly bit her bottom lip nervously as she sat indian style on the bed, facing Carrie after having changed into dry clothes. She watched as Carrie's eyes slowly moved back and forth as she read the lyrics to the song.
"So?" Kelly asked when she noticed Carrie's eyes had stopped moving. She could feel her stomach turning as it always did when she showed someone one of her songs for the first time.
"Kell, I think it's brilliant," Carrie said honestly as she looked up at her. "What part did Ashley have a problem with?"
"After the leech part," she said softly.
"It's like I can't breathe, without you inside of me," Carrie quoted. "That's hot."
"I know, that's what I said."
"And what did she say?"
"Something about how it was weird coming from me. I told you how they're always giving me a hard time about the whole sex thing."
"You never told me that," Carrie frowned.
"Really? I must've just thought it then."
Carrie nodded, looking down at the lyrics again.
"What's wrong?"
"I'm really not too fond of your friends right now."
"Join the club," Kelly mumbled.
"Hey, come here a sec," Carrie reached out, pulling her closer before resting her hands on the Texan's knees. "You're not ok right now, are you?"
"It's just that she knows how hard it is for me to show someone the stuff I write," Kelly explained, looking down at her hands that were fold in her lap.
"So, the fact that she was giving you a hard time about it probably sucks, huh?"
"And it's like she didn't even stop to think about it...she just laughed."
Carrie sighed, "I'm sorry."
"You aren't the one that laughed."
"Kell, the song is brilliant. Don't think otherwise."
"Do you think it's weird?" she asked, looking up at her.
"You're almost eighteen...I'd think it was weird if sex wasn't on your mind."
Kelly laughed softly.
"Besides, it's one line, right? It's not like the whole song is about sex. It's just about this strange attraction that you have to someone that you can't seem to understand or get over, right?"
"Yea," Kelly smiled, happy that at least one person in the world would understand the song.
"So..."
"So?"
"Who's the lucky guy?"
Kelly rolled her eyes.
"Aw, come on, you can tell me."
"I don't know," she replied truthfully. "I honestly have no clue what inspired me to write that song."
"Oh, it's a mystery," Carrie's eyes lit up.
Kelly gave another soft laugh.
"Kelly..." Carrie squeezed her knee gently to get her to look up at her. "I think it's crappy that your friends give you a hard time about it. And, I mean, I'm no expert or anything, but if you ever have questions or just want to talk about it...I won't laugh."
"Thanks," Kelly smiled.

"Carrie," Stacey smiled, walking up to her in the auditorium. "I didn't know you were going to be in the play."
"Well, I don't know if I'm actually gonna be in it or not," Carrie replied, nodding over to where Kelly was talking to the play's director. "Kelly's trying to pull a couple strings."
Stacey nodded, "Well, this is going to be fun, then."
"Looks like it."
"So, I have a party tomorrow, at my parent's house...they're always going away for the weekend."
"Rea--" Carrie was cut short as someone jumped onto her, kissing her cheek with a loud smack. "Shoot," she laughed, hugging the short Texan back. "Baby, you scared me."
"You got a part," Kelly grinned, bouncing on her toes as she let her go, too excited to correct her about the nickname.
"Really?"
"Yea, it's nothing major, just kinda an extra, I guess, but you totally got a part."
"Aw, thanks, Kell," Carrie pulled her into another hug.
"Congrats," Stacey smiled, causing the two singers to turn back to her. "Kelly, I'm glad you're here too. I was just telling Carrie about this party I'm having tomorrow, and I was wondering if the two of you would like to go."
"We'd love to," Kelly replied.
"Now, I know you're always busy, but...you what?"
"We'd love to," Kelly repeated. "We'll see you there."
"Right, yea, ok then," Stacey nodded with a wide smile. "See you there."
Carrie laughed as they watched her walk away, "Think you shocked her?"
"Not as much as I shocked you...you should've seen your face," Kelly laughed.
"Well, I'm not used to mauling people in public."
"Well, get used to it All-star," her eyes lit up. "And don't think I didn't catch what you called me, either."
++++++++++
"You've talked to Ashley lately?" Carrie asked as she got ready for the party while Kelly lay on her bed.
"Yea."
"How'd it go?"
"Ok--a little awkward, but it's good."
"Good," Carrie nodded, turning to her. "You're really not much of one for these parties, huh?"
"Not my thing," she shrugged, tossing a stuffed softball into the air and catching it.
"Why not?"
"Too much trouble to get ready for it."
"Well," Carrie smiled, joining her on the bed with a bounce, causing her to giggle. "I really appreciate you going with me."
"It's fine," Kelly assured her.
"You think it's going to be fun?"
"I think it all depends on your definition of fun."
Carrie laughed, squeezing her arm gently before standing again. "I look ok, right?"
"Of course you look ok."
"You didn't even look."
"I don't have to look to know that you look good."
"Kell..." Carrie fussed.
Kelly sat up to be able to fully look at her, "Yep, I was right. You're stunning. See? Told you I didn't need to look."
Carrie rolled her eyes, "What time do you want to go?"
"I don't know. Aren't you supposed to be like fashionably late to these things?" she asked, feeling the bed sink as Carrie sat down next to her.
"You know, you're going to have to work on this party thing if you plan on being a rock star."
"Says who?"
"Says everybody," Carrie laughed. "It comes with the whole famous thing."
"Who says I'm in it for the fame? Besides, I'm totally going to make being a dork, cool."
"If anyone could do it, it's definitely you," Carrie nodded in agreement, running a hand through her hair.
Kelly smiled lazily at the feeling of her fingernails against her scalp as she continued to toss the stuffed toy into the air while laying on her back.
"This could be fun, you never know."
"Walking on hot coals could be fun too," Kelly smirked.
Carrie ruffled her hair, laughing.
"But I mean, you're going to be there, so it won't be a total waste."
"True," Carrie nodded. "Plus, if it really sucks, when can just sit there, making fun of everybody."
"Or, we can go get ice cream."
"Oh, ice cream. I know I picked you for a good reason."
"Picked me?" Kelly raised an eyebrow, tilting her head back on the bed to be able to look up at her. "You were given to me. You didn't have a choice."
"Given? What am I? Your slave or something?"
"Dude, you're totally my mistress," she laughed.
"Oh, whatever."
"You know it's true, All-star. Heck, even your nickname sounds kinky."
"Shut up," Carrie laughed, poking her side, making her giggle.
Kelly squirmed, taking Carrie's hand into her own, and holding it tightly as she rested it on the taller girl's lap, making sure she couldn't tickle her again.
"So, honestly, how much do you really not want to go tonight?"
"Don't worry about it. I was just teasing you. These things aren't always that bad. It just really depends on who shows up, I guess."
"You sure?"
"Positive," she smiled, giving her hand a gentle squeeze.

"Kelly! Carrie!" Stacey greeted cheerfully, pulling the two girls into her house. "I'm so glad you made it. I've been telling everybody you were coming Kelly, and nobody believed me."
"I wouldn't have bet on it either," she smiled, taking the drink that Stacey had handed Carrie away from her. "She's driving," she explained at the look of disappointment on Stacey's face.
"And you?"
"No thanks," Kelly shook her head, handing her back the drink as she placed a hand on Carrie's back. "Come on, I'm sure there's some people I can introduce you to."
Carrie flashed Stacey a quick smile as Kelly guided them away.
"Don't drink anything, especially not something she gives you. She doesn't seem to understand that not everybody can hold their liquor like she can...freaking camel."
Carrie laughed as they walked up to a small group of people.
"Hey y'all."
"Kelly," one of the guys smiled, hugging her. "I heard you were coming, but I didn't believe it."
"Yea, well, I'm supposed to be the good Student Council member, and show the new girl around, and what says Burleson more than one of Stacey's parties, right?"
"Right," he nodded, turning to Carrie. "Is this her?"
"Yea, y'all, this is Carrie."
Kelly smiled as Carrie greeted the group of people politely, trying to remember each of their names.
"Hey, I'm gonna go check out what they have to eat, ok?" Kelly asked.
"Can I come with you?" Carrie looked at her nervously.
"Yea, sure, come on," she nodded, taking her hand and guiding her through the living room that was starting to become increasingly crowded. "Too many people at once?" she asked as they stepped into the kitchen.
"Yea."
"Sorry," Kelly smiled, opening the fridge and pulling out two waters.
"It's ok. I mean, it's not too bad so far."
"Wait," Kelly replied, knowingly.
"For what?"
"Keg!" several voices cheered from the room next to the kitchen.
"That."
