Life Goes On(Pt25)
The bright lights of the long funeral procession of cars cut through the still of the night. Sweeping across the dark landscape as they moved over the wet curvy Irish roads, the hearse with Vivian’s casket leading the way to the cemetery.
The family piled out of the limos and followed the casket up the hill to its final resting place. The smell of freshly overturned soil assaulted Kelsey’s scenes, sending a new wave of tears. Rick held her close around the shoulders. Perhaps a hundred people gathered around the grave to pay their last respects to a friend.
Joe looked out into the darkness. Hidden in the shadows from the eyes of mortals were the ‘other’ friends that knew Vivian. Members of the Community wanted to pay their respects to a friend they held in high regards.
“I never realized I had so many friends.” Vivian said.
Rebecca told him as she linked her arm through his, “On both sides.”
“I think there was this many at ours.” Brenda looked over at her.
“I don’t remember. I was to busy watching Joe.”
“He was devastated by your untimely passing.” Steve put his arm around her and kissed her temple. “Sav and Evelyn have eased some of that pain.”
”He is happy isn’t he?”
“Yes he is.” Steve told her.
“I’m happy too know that Evelyn is with him.”
“Why is Sav standing over there?” Vivian pointed him out. He was standing far back out of site from the family.
“I sense his guilt.” Brenda said.
“So do I.” Steve added sadly.
“But…I told him it wasn’t his fault.”
“Give him some time.” Steve said.
“Can’t you do something….like…maybe give Kelsey a nudge to go get him and bring him closer.”
“I can try, but I can’t make her do it.” Rebecca said and moved in her direction. Rebecca stood beside her, leaning down she whispered in her ear, hoping that Kelsey would hear her. Kelsey raised her head and looked around the crowd. She spotted Sav standing off by himself. His posture was ridged, hands clasped behind his back and showing no emotion at all. Kelsey stood and walked over to him, mindless of the questions from Gail about where she was going.
Phil tapped Joe on the shoulder, then had to force his head sideways to where he could see Sav. Joe averted his eyes and looked down at his lap.
“Richard, why are you standing over here?” Kelsey said in a much firmer voice than she meant to use.
“I…um…wouldn’t feel comfortable over there.”
“Nonsense.” Kelsey grabbed his arm and started dragging him closer. Sav protested the whole way and clamed up when they joined the group in the front row.
“He is so stubborn sometimes. I just want to choke him.” Vivian mused.
Steve giggled. “You should have done that when you were still alive Viv. I wanted too so many times over the years I lost count.”
Brenda smacked his arm. “Don’t give him any ideas Steve. He just might try it.”
Rebecca rejoined them, proud of herself for getting through to Kelsey.
“Hey no gloating.” Steve said.
“I wasn’t gloating. Besides it worked didn’t it.”
“I can’t believe I’m watching my own funeral.” Viv mumbled. “It all seems so surreal.”
“They’re real, we are not.” Brenda pointed out.
The large crowd grew quiet as the priest began the ceremony. Vivian giggled at the end when the priest made the sign of the cross over the casket. He had noticed Nick flinch at the gesture. Kelsey rose and stepped up to the casket kissing her hand, she placed it on the smooth surface.
“I just want to hold her one more time.” Vivian said.
“That’s not possible Vivian.” Steve replied.
“I know, but still…”
Rebecca, Steve and Brenda exchanged a knowing glance.
“Will she…she be alright….I mean…you all told me you can see the future…Kelsey, will she be happy….she’s still young and…and beautiful. I just want her to be happy…maybe fall in love again.” He glanced at the three people beside him.
“Yes.” They all said together.
“Good.” He smiled, knowing that she will be.
The crowd began to thin out. Many of them expressing their condolences to Kelsey and Vivian’s two daughter’s Lillian and Tamara.
Kelsey made her way slowly to the waiting limo, holding tight to Sav’s hand. She had leaned on him heavily through out the ceremony, wanting to make him feel needed. Even in a time like this she though of others.
Standing by the limo, a noise filtered across the land. Kelsey turned to Sav, then looked around. “What’s that noise?”
“The vampire community paying their respects to a friend.” Sav told her.
The noise grew louder and she could make it out better now. A form of chanting, the harmony flowed together beautifully.
“How many are out there?” Kelsey asked a little worried.
“You don’t want to know.”
Kelsey suddenly felt frightened and overwhelmed at the same time. She had no idea that so many of them even existed and knew Vivian. She was startled by the dark clad figure that came up next to her.
“Mrs. Campbell. I want to extend my deepest sympathies on your loss. Vivian was well like among us and will be missed.”
”Kelsey this is Ethan, one of The Elders.” Sav introduced her.
Ethan took her hand, squeezing gently. “The Elders also send their condolences to you and your family. And if there is anything you are ever in need of, just ask.”
“But…but who do I ask?”
“We’re never very far away.” Ethan took a step back and looked at Sav. “Rick, nice to see you and your family again. Take care and don’t let silly things get in the way.” With that Ethan took his leave.
“What did he mean by that?”
”I don’t know.” Sav replied watching him leave. He helped Kelsey into the car, then stood back.
“Your not coming?” she asked.
“No. I have other matters to attend too.” he lied.
“Ok. Come visit anytime.”
”I will. Take care of yourself Kelsey.” Sav turned around and saw Joe standing by the other limo. There eyes meet briefly before he turned and looked back up the hill. Joe, Rick, Mal and Phil did the same. A strong presents drawing their attention to the same place.
Steve, Rebecca, and Brenda scrambled behind a tree, dragging Vivian with them.
“You don’t suppose they saw us do you?” Steve asked peering around the tree. Rebecca smacked his arm.
“They can’t see us.”
The remaining members of the band and Mal shook the feeling away and climbed into the cars. Before Joe ducked inside, he glanced to were Sav was, only to see him walking into the shadows and out of sight, not once did he look back. He stepped away from the car, taking a step in his direction.
“Rick wait!” Joe yelled out into the darkness. He waited….when Sav didn’t come back into view, Joe’s feature’s dropped in disappointment that he didn’t come to him. He stared at the ground a few minutes and slowly turned and climbed in the car.
Out in the deepest shadows, Sav watched the limo’s pull away. He heard Joe call him but didn’t turn back.
“Are you sure you’re doing the right thing?”
”No.”
“Then why do it?”
Sav glanced at Tiny, then back to where the limos were disappearing into the night. “It’s better this way.”
“Better for who? Joe…you seem to have forgotten what happened last time you did this.”
”I didn’t forget. He’ll be ok this time.”
”How can you be so sure?”
”A… feeling.”
“You know Sav, I’ve watched the two of you over the years. I never would have guessed that you would let a woman come between you.”
“Not just any woman Tiny. Joe’s daughter. It would be wrong of me to have them both.”
“Then get over Amber and go back to Joe. Cause you know you won’t be happy without him.”
”It’s not that easy.” Sav whispered, sadly looking at the ground.
“Not that easy.” Vivian huffed. “Let me go over there and give him a swift kick. Those two belong together.”
“I’ll help you.” Rebecca echoed.
“No.” Steve stopped them. “He has to work this out by himself.”
“I think your making a mistake.” Tiny voiced.
Sav dragged his eyes from the ground to look at him. “Then it’s mine to make. See you around.” he leaped into the air and was gone.
Vivian growled. “Even dead I can be angry at him.”
Steve laughed at him and draped his arm around his shoulders. “I know what you mean mate. Come on, time to go. We have all eternity to watch them.” The four of them faded away in the dark, laughing and talking amongst them.
