Everlasting Love(Pt26)
Joe silently followed Rachel through the winding tunnels, taking in everything that he past. He quickly learned that the Underground was a massive cave system that went deep in the Andes Mountains in Bolivia, several hundred miles from the city of Santa Cruz .
Joe was amazed at the sites, the place could pass as an underground city, with all the modern technology, right down to running water. While the beauty of the cave stayed for the most part, intact. They past large crates he guessed and smelled that were full of blood wine. Elaborate lighting fixtures hung from the rock walls, more were scattered about in the small ‘rooms’. Lights shone on the more colorful rock walls, casting dim reds, orange into the largest of the cavern room. It didn’t have the damp, earthen smell like most caves, Joe noted and asked Rachel about it.
Rachel told them about the ventilation system that pulled the damp air out, while another filtered fresh air in and controlled the moisture inside the cavern. The machinery itself was housed in a ‘room’ about mid-way to the back of the cavern and was as big as a mid-sized house. Joe raised his brows from what Rachel told him. Curious stares from hundreds of people milling about as they went by, the ones they past in the passage way greeting them warmly. Most of whom where vampires, but yet he heard the heart beat of mortals. The amount of people that lived here surprised him too.
Joe turned to make sure that Nick was still behind him, then slammed into something solid. Fingers gripped Joe’s up arms to keep him from falling backwards.
“What the hell…” Joe quickly angered, jerking his arms free. “..get your fucking hands off me.”
The man smiled and released him. “Ah, I know who you are young Joseph. Nice to finally meet you, after all that I’ve heard.” He stuck his hand out to Joe, who just stared at it. “I’m Gabriel, a very close friend of Rick’s, when he was here the last time.”
“How close?” Joe glared at him.
“Close, but not that close. We spent many hours talking. I learned a lot about him and his life. He talked about you mostly.”
“I’m not in the mood to hear your history with Sav. I just want to see him.”
“Yes of course you do. Rachel, I’ll take them from here.” Gabriel took her hand and brushed his lips across the back. “Welcome back.”
Joe felt uncertain about following this man that he just met.
“Trust him Joe.” Rachel brushed his cheek with her lips. “No one will harm you here, they have been warned against such a foolish act. If they so much as talk crossly about you or to you, they will be banned from here. Gabriel has given us his word on that.”
“Where are you going?” Joe asked, the uncertainty still touching his voice.
“I will not be far. I have allies here also, that will be watching.”
“If this place is that bad, why bring Sav here at all? I don’t want to be constantly looking over my shoulder waiting on someone to…”
“Rest assured Joe, that will not happen.” Gabriel cut him off.
“The first time it does, we are out of here and I will find another way or someone else to get the help Sav needs.”
“Come…” Gabriel lightly grabbed his elbow and pulled him forward. “…you have waited long enough to see him.”
Following Gabriel another five minutes or so, the passage way took a sharp turn to the left and down 20 steep steps. The appearance seemed to change, it looked like this was drilled out.
“How fucking far back does this place go?” Joe asked, narrowly missing smacking his head on low hanging rock.
“We did this addition about a 100 years ago. We out grew some parts of the carven or some ‘rooms’ were just too dangerous to use or too small. No telling how long the cavern itself has been here.”
”How long has the Community lived here?” Joe wanted to know.
“Many of us around a 400 years. It has came a long way just in the last 30 years. All the new technology allows us to run the place like a small underground city.”
“I heard someone say that these places are horrible. The outcasts of the vampire community come here to escape being destroyed for whatever crimes they commented against The Code. Then it’s not much better here for them.”
“Well that doesn’t happen here, perhaps in another one it does. Everyone who comes to us are welcome. If they start any trouble, they are banned from here. Where did you hear such none sense?” Gabriel half turned to glance back at Joe.
“The asshole behind me.” Joe smirked.
Gabriel stopped in front of a heavy oak door and turned to face the two men that had followed him. Meeting Nick’s steady gaze. “I must warn you Nick, not to try any thing against Rick while you are here. Many of us would not take kindly to your behavior toward him.”
“And I don’t take kindly to threats.” Nick glared back at him.
“It wasn’t a threat Nick, just a warning.” Gabriel corrected him. “We have an understanding of why you treated him so badly, when it was never necessary.”
“I will not get into my relationship with Richard or the others that are under my protection.” Nick retorted.
“You don’t have too, we already know.” Gabriel smiled at him, he wasn’t going to let Nick’s arrogant nature get to him. “Rick is in here.” He gestured to the door. “Let Joe have some time alone with him first.”
“He can come if….” Joe started.
“I insist.” Gabriel returned his gaze back to Nick.
“I can wait Joseph. Rick would be much happier to have you there first anyway.”
“He won’t even know I’m here.” Joe said softly.
Nick gave him a gentle push when Gabriel opened the door and stepped aside to let Joe pass. He stopped and turned back around. “Where will you be if I need you?” he asked Nick.
“In my study with me...” Gabriel started. “…just a few doors down.”
Nick smiled just a bit and tapped his temple, indicating to Joe that they were already together in their minds.
Joe returned his smile, taking a deep breath to get control over his emotions that had already been in over drive since Rachel showed up at the house. The only thing that she had told them about Sav was, that he was doing better, nothing else. Joe had bombarded her with questions that she had danced around, causing him to get angry and frustrated.
The door closed softly behind him. Joe’s eyes adjusted to the dimmer light in the room. His gaze was quickly drawn to the bed, where a figure was propped up on several pillows. His head was turned away and Joe couldn’t see is face, but knew that it was Sav.
Forcing his legs to move, he slowly approached him. Scanning what he could see of Sav above the black sheet that covered him from the waist down. His long fingers still thinner than what they were supposed be. Joe’s eyes traveled upward to notice the shirt looked two sizes too big and hung from his thin frame. Finally his eyes landed on Sav’s profile. Reaching toward him to gently push the hair away so he could see him better. His cheek bones jutted out sharply against the lower part of his face. Dark circles rimmed his slightly sunken eyes.
Catching his breath at the silky softness of his hair, when he ran his fingers through Sav’s hair. The coolness of his face, as Joe rubbed the back of his fingers over the skin.
Joe suddenly snatched his hand away. He stood straighter and stared down at Sav. Shock registered in his mind first, relief quickly washed over him. A strangled cry rushed from Joe’s mouth as he slumped to the floor on his knees. The carefully controlled emotions came to the surface as he laid his head gently on Sav’s thigh. Closing his eyes, Joe let the tears fall unchecked to soak into the sheet.
After nearly four months, he felt Sav in his mind again. Joe detected the pain, sorrow and guilt, but most importantly, his love for Joe. Reaching out harder to him, Joe just as quickly backed off, when Sav recoiled from the strength of his probing.
For what seemed like eternity to Joe, he lay there, not moving, softly crying as their minds melted together again. Joe was unaware of the hand that softly ran over his head.
“Joe.” The stillness of the room was broken from that single word.
Joe snapped his eyes open and looked up to meet blue eyes, fingers brushed away the tears that rolled down freely. Joe briefly leaned into his hand, then reached up to hold it between his, brushing the back with his lips before placing his cheek there.
“Come here.” Sav’s soft voice rang out again and a gently tug on Joe to pull him up.
Joe pulled himself up and went to lye on the bed, then stopped, he quickly kicked off his shoes. Climbing over Sav, he slipped under the sheet and scooted closer. Sav pulled him into his arms, while Joe draped his arm over Sav’s lower chest.
Joe sat up again and peered at Sav again, searching his eyes.
“What?” Sav questioned.
“I…I…” Joe choked out. “… I’m sor…”
Sav placed his fingers over Joe’s lips. ”I know.”
Joe stretched up and hesitated, waiting for Sav’s reaction before he closed the distance between their lips. Closing his eyes tightly at the feel of Sav’s fingers tangling in his hair, those soft lips that had so entranced him years ago. Joe reluctantly pulled back, Sav traced his fingertips over his lips.
“I’ve missed that, missed you.” Sav whispered. His hand fell away slowly and rested on his chest, his eyes started closing.
”So have I. ” Joe returned, watching his face drift into sleep.
Joe settled back down beside him, taking a deep breath to push the stinging tears away. Their time together was brief, but no less rewarding, both of them forgiving each other for their past mistakes over the proceeding months. Even though Joe forgave him, he still wanted to broach the subject of one person or problem that still lay between them, when Sav was ready to talk about it. For now, he would enjoy being in Sav’s arms again, hearing his voice and the slight tingle in his mind.
