Chapter 26
The gang had been looking all over Kevin’s apartment for clues as to what might have happened, and where Angel might have been taken, but they came up empty. They were pretty sure that Joseph was behind it, but they had no idea whatsoever where he was holed up. Looking back at the few times they had met Joseph, they found nothing that gave any indication of his whereabouts. They all knew what they had to do, but none of them were particularly keen on doing it. They had to get Nick. He knew Joseph better than anyone else. He was their last option. Finally AJ volunteered after having spent the last ten minutes trying to come up with another solution.
He walked down the street toward Nick’s mansion, trying to come up with a good excuse to be let inside to see Nick. He knew that it was highly unlikely that they would just let some strange human inside to see their Master, and his chances of survival, if he didn’t have a good reason for them to let him live, was close to nil. He approached the big wooden door with hesitating steps and finally reached it. He took a couple of deep breaths before gathering enough courage to knock.
He waited a couple of minutes, and when no one answered, he knocked again. This time, it only took a couple of seconds before he heard the lock turn, and the door was opened. His heart caught in his throat as he waited to see who, or rather; what had opened the door. It was a vampire, and he was in game face, but he didn’t seem to be threatening him as he looked at AJ with a somewhat stunned expression. AJ cleared his throat, preparing to say why he was there, when the vampire interrupted him.
“You’re one of the Slayer’s friends.” It was more a statement than a question, but AJ answered him anyway,
“Um...yeah.” Maybe they wouldn’t hurt him, if they knew about Angel’s relationship with Nick, he thought, but then, maybe they didn’t know about that, and then he’d most likely be in deep shit. He shifted from one leg to the other and waited to see what the vampire would do. A grin spread across the vampire’s lips, and AJ had a hard time figuring out whether it was a pleasant grin or an evil one, due to the game face. His question was answered when he was suddenly grabbed by his throat and pulled into the hall. He tried prying the fingers of, but to no avail, his strength was nothing compared to the supernatural one of the vampire.
“Hey fellas! Look what I found outside our door!” The vampire hollered as he dragged AJ into what would have been the living-room, had this been a normal house. A group of vampires lounging in front of the small TV turned their heads and began growling, when they saw the catch.
AJ was thrown to the floor and the vampires began circling him, growling and poking him as they went. He figured they were trying to rile him up, and he thought, even if he did try to escape, he would make it very far. He resolved to just staying on the ground, hoping that someone who knew about Angel and Nick would interrupt them before they started sucking him dry.
I didn’t know how long I had been chained the damn wall, when someone finally entered the dungeon. I had given up on trying to get out of the chains, no matter what I did, it resulted in excruciating pain.
At first I couldn’t make out the face of whoever had entered the room, the shadows of the torches hid any features that might indicate who was coming to visit. As the figure moved forward, the shadows slid away from the face, and I saw that it was Joseph. It didn’t surprise me, not at all, that he had taken me away. What baffled me was why he hadn’t killed me yet.
He stopped a couple of feet away from me, and he just stood there, staring at me for long moments. His lingering gaze made me uncomfortable. I felt like he was looking for any show of weakness, so I did everything in my power to keep my face free of any sign of emotions. He took a step forward, looking straight into my eyes, before smiling the most malicious smile I’ve ever seen.
His hand came up and he stroked his thumb across my cheek. I tried desperately to not flinch away from his touch. I didn’t want him to know that his mysterious silence was actually quite unnerving. His thumb trailed down my face, and as his hand reached my chin, he grabbed it firmly, rendering me unable to turn my head.
I stared directly into his eyes, wanting to show him, that even if he had me bound, I was in no way controlled by him. I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction, even if the situation seemed hopeless.
“Such a fragile looking human” he murmured, evil smile still gracing his lips, “and yet so strong.”
I felt a retort just begging to leave my mouth and fought desperately not say something stupid, but in the end, I lost.
“Yeah? You wanna find out how strong I am?”
Joseph, at first looked startled, that I had opened my mouth, but he just laughed a dark, disturbing laugh and turned his back to me.
“I don’t wanna fight you little one.” He said, “If I did, I might end up killing you, and then a new slayer would be called.” After having walked a few steps away from me, he turned back around to face me, “And that would just not be very good. Besides, this way, I know where I’ve got you, and I have something Nickolas wants. Basically it’s a win/win situation…for me of course.” He left the room, leaving me to contemplate what he had just told me.
Just as the vampires were about to attack, someone entered the room. AJ only heard the footsteps he couldn’t see who it was. The vampires above him stilled, and he heard voices underneath the rushing of his blood. He didn’t move a muscle as he waited for whatever would happen next. He knew that if he tried to run, he would be caught before he even reached the door to the hall. He closed his eyes and breathed deeply. If they were gonna kill him, he didn’t want to see it.
Suddenly the vampires surrounding him started moving away and he carefully opened his eyes. What he saw surprised him. He was staring up into Brian’s clear blue eyes, and they had something resembling an apology in them. Brian reached his hand out, and AJ took it. He was hauled to his feet and led out of the room and up the stairs without a word leaving either of their mouths.
