Getting out of the car, Rob hurried into the house and left Gemma by the car with tears in her eyes.
“Rob?” She called out his name, but he didn’t turn around, he didn’t even take any notice. “Rob!!” She raised her voice but stood still by the car. Again, he kept going and unlocked the door to her place. He went inside let let the door stay open. She watched his figure disappear in the dark hall and banged her hands on the car. “Damn it, Rob.” Surprised by the volume of her own voice, she jumped slightly and started crying all over again.
Gemma could feel the knot in her stomach grow as she stumbled her way inside the house. She didn’t bother to turn on the light, as she knew where he was. Closing the front door behind her, she made her way into the dark and quiet bedroom. The room was bathed in the dim light coming from the moon and she could just see the sheets clinging to his body, they seemed restricting as he was trembling with quiet sobs. The silence in the room made her hold back her crying, she didn’t want to disturb him.
Grabbing an extra blanket from a chair, she walked over to his side of the bed. Crouching down, she pulled the blanket over his crying body and watched him blankly as she tried to hold back the new tears. He was squeezing his eyes shut too hard and he was breathing too fast for him to be sleeping. Her hand reached out to touch his, which was firmly clinched together in a fist. But ashe che could sense her touch getting close, he moved his hand away and grabbed a tight hold on to the blanket she just placed over him. His knuckles almost turned white from holding on to it.
Instead of removing her hand, she refused to give up and reached forward again. Taking a hold of his hand, she bent in towards him and placed her lips on his forehead.
“Sshh…” She tried to calm him down as she felt his hot skin against her lips. Sleepy moans escaped his lips as he started to cry again. Silently and gently, Gemma made her way over his legs and sank down onto the bed, feeling confused and sad from seeing her love like this. She nuzzled her head against his back and felt his arm move around and cover her with the blanket, sharing it with her. Sharing both the blanket and the warmth of his body. Creeping up even closer to his body, she slid a leg over his waist and kissed the back of his neck. He was still crying and she was still fighting with everything she had within her to prevent the tears from falling.
“Please Rob…” Her whispering voice was soothing and her fingers moving around under his shirt, made him feel safe. “Please tell me… what’s wrong?” Rob leaned in against her touch and sighed.
“I wish there was an easy way to tell you…” Rob muttered reluctantly and his hand found hers under the fabric of his shirt.
“You make it sound like it’s the end of the world… what is it? What could be so bad? Tell me.” Gemma sniffed a couple of times but realized that she couldn’t hold back the tears as she felt the moist sensation on her cheeks.
“I don’t think I can right now.” Rob felt like he was falling apart under her loving touch and calming voice. “I love you too much. It scares me to think that…”
“To think what, Rob?” Gemma breathed out the words against his neck. “You wont lose me.”
Sighing a final time, Rob started to babble incoherently about the previous events that had happened between him and Mike. As the truth filled the room, Gemma’s embrace tightened around Rob’s body.
“It mak makes sense to me now…”She whispered mostly to herself.
“What makes sense?” Rob squeezed her hand that was still under his shirt.
“Nothing… I just…” Gemma placed a single kiss on his neck and her hand slipped out of his, only to rest her palm on his lower stomach and smoothing it up to his chest.
“What? Tell me.” Rob put his hand on top of hers as if to reassure her that whatever she wanted to tell him, it would be all right.
“It felt different … being with you. Your eyes were like nothing I had ever seen. I didn’t recognize them. I’ve been able to tell your lust for me before, but this time it scared me at times. They were so full of lust. I almost couldn’t find the love in your eyes. I don’t know… I just … it wasn’t like it used to be.” Rob turned around under the covers with Gemma’s leg still securely placed over his waist. Facing her, he could just make out her eyes in the darkness. They were glazed over with moist, even though she wasn’t crying. They were searching his face with great curiosity.
“Really?” His voice wavered slightly but he had stopped crying.
“Yeah… it reminded me of…” Sighing, she looked him in the eyes, showing him that she wouldn’t be able to finish the sentence.
“Mike.” Rob brought a hand to her face and brushed away a couple of lose hair that was falling down in front of her eyes. She could tell that the name of his friend was spoken softly and that Rob understood.
“Mike… yeah.” Gemma closed her eyes and felt his thumb brush over her lips gently. “He has eyes like that.”
Leaning in carefully, Rob brushed his lips against hers. Slowly and softly they kissed and massaged each other’s lips.
“I’ve never wanted you as much as I did tonight. Never.” Rob whispered against her lips. His hot breath made her lips ache for his touch.
“Hmm…?” She didn’t know how to utter a single word from the feeling that was growing in her stomach. She loved this man, and there was no longer a single doubt in her mind. Mike would simply have to understand.
“It’s true, Gemz.” He pulled her close and nibbled on her skin around the collarbone knowing that it caused her immense pleasure. Her arms held tighter around his back as if her life depended on it and she moaned quietly. The feeling of safety and love was overwhelming both of them as they found each other’s lips again and within the kiss, they knew. They wouldn’t make it without each other.
After a few hours, Gemma woke up and she could feel Rob’s body relaxed against hers and his breathing were finally even. He had fallen asleep. She kissed his forehead and crawled away from his warm embrace. She still had one missing link in all of this. Mike. And she had to talk with him.
---
Driving by Brad’s house, she noticed that Mike’s car was still there. Pulling up to the house, she saw him sitting on the step in front of the house. As the engine stopped running, he looked up and their eyes met through the car window. She stepped out of the car and walked up the driveway to him. Sitting down next to him, they both sat there staring out into space, saying nothing. She moved a hand over to his knee where she rested it.
“So… I guess you talked with Rob?” Mike looked over at Gemma and half-smiled.
“Yeah. He told me everything.” a tra tried to figure out if she felt different about Mike now after the revelation was out.
“Oh I see.” Mike nodded and kept his gaze locked with Gemma’s.
“How are you, Mike? Are you okay?” Her smile was soothing to him and Mike immediately felt comfortable sitting there with her – with her being a friend. A friend?
“To be honest, I’m feeling rather confused… and I wish I could change my thoughts and feel different about everything… everyone.” She rested her head on his shoulder and sighed, placing her hands in her lap.
“I would say it’s only normal to feel that way when you think about what you are going through. But tell me…” She paused and left the sentence hanging in the air not knowing how to ask.
“Yeah?” Mike put his head on hers.
“Are you in love with Rob?” Mike sighed as he knew their conversation would lead to that question sooner or later. Personally, he had hoped for later. A silence filled up the space around them as he thought about how to answer her very direct question. He moved his head away from hers and took her hand. For a little while he sat with her hand and caressed it with his thumb. Not saying a word. For all she cared, he could take as long as he wanted to. She knew for sure that when the answer saw the light of day, it would be the truth no matter if it was what she wanted to hear or not. After nearly a half an hour Mike cleared his throat quietly and Gemma closed her eyes trying to prepare herself for what was about to enter her truth-seeking mind.
“Uhm… a part of me, maybe. You know? I don’t think I can be more precise than that. Not right now, anyway. But one thing I’ve found out is that there’s one thing missing in my life. And that’s Anna. I feel like I’m missing something inside. And it’s constantly hurting. But… a part of me was probably in love with Rob -and maybe still is. I don’t know. I’ve also been thinking that missing him as a friend made me confused as to how I felt about him. But… I’m almost sure that… that a certain unknown part of me was, is, in love with him. But I love Anna.” She looked up at him and their eyes met. “I’m sorry if that’s too imprecise for you.” His eyes were apologetic, but she slowly shook her head.
“I think I understand you more than you know…” Gemma looked down and saw their hands holding on to each other.
“What do you mean?” Mike brought his free hand to her chin and lifted her head a bit to get the eye contact, he so desperately needed.
“I mean… a part of me was, is, in love with you. But I love Rob.” Mike nodded and chuckled slightly.
“What?” She couldn’t help but to smile when hearing his laugh.
“It’s just… look at the two of us… sitting here feeling sorry for ourselves when we in fact are the ones to blame for the whole mess.” He smiled and squeezed her hand, his voice changed a little and his smile became a little nervous. “I’m sorry I don’t feel the same way about you.”
“Don’t be.” The smile remained on her lips.
“But I am. I would have loved to be in love with you.” He cleared his throat. “But… why didn’t you ever tell me? That you were having these feelings for me?” His eyes were warm and she felt strangely okay with having this conversation. With having to tell him all about it.
“It never really came up. You know? And I didn’t know how you felt. Even though I had an idea.” The last words came out more as a question, even though she knew he didn’t have feelings for her. She needed to know what he felt. If anything.
“I care about you, a lot. And there was no doubt I had, have, lust for you. As much as you had for me. But I don’t think that I ever came close to being in love with you.” He tried to search her eyes to see if there was a hint of hurt. “Sorry.” She just smiled and nodded.
“I had a feeling that it was the case.” He leaned in giving her a kiss on the cheek and embraced her.
“I don’t want to lose you though. You mean a lot to me.” With his arms still wrapped safely around her, she smiled and ran a hand over his hair.
“You wont. We’ve been through too much.” She moved slightly away from his embrace and looked at him. “But what about Anna?”
“We haven’t even talked since the day she found out about you and I.” Gemma nodded and looked down for a short moment, only to return her eyes back up at him.
“Are you going to do something about it?” He suddenly had a determined look in his eyes.
“I’m going to fight for her.” The words made Gemma smile and she hugged him again.
“Good luck. You both deserve it.”
