Chapter 26
After a ten hour flight, Ann was glad to be settled in the car. She was thankful that Gerry was admit about flying first class because she was comfortable for the whole flight, well almost all of it. “Gerry,” she said as they were leaving the airport, “remind me never to play mile high club with you again.”
“It couldn’t have been that bad,” Gerry said with a smile. “Actually, I remember it being on of the best.”
“Don’t get me wrong, it was one of the best. I didn’t know I could bend that way. The only problem is that I think these bruises will be with me for a while.”
“Then aren’t you glad we didn’t attempt it in the economy stall?”
“Yes but I think even the business class was a bit small.”
“True, but it was fun.”
“Yes, yes it was.”
An hour later, they were only a few miles away from Gerry’s childhood home and Ann was freaking out. “Are you sure they’re going to like me?”
“Yes, now calm down. My niece already loves you as does my sister in law, Nancy. I sent them your CD and Nancy said that little Emma listened to it until it wore out. Plus, as far as I can remember, you are the first girl I have brought home since I was 16, so they all know it is serious.”
“Nancy is whose wife again?”
“She is Douglas’ wife.”
“And Adrian isn’t married?”
“That is correct.”
They pulled into the driveway and Ann took a deep breath. “Do I look okay?”
“Beautiful as always.”
Just when they were getting out of the car, the front door opened and out stepped a petite woman in her early 60’s. She had salt and pepper curly hair and was wearing an apron. “Gerard James Butler,” she said sternly, “you had better have a good excuse for not coming home in almost a year.”
“Sorry mum,” he said hanging his head in shame. Ann giggled quietly to herself.
There was a silence for a moment or two. “Well, are you at least going to give me a hug?” his mother asked. When she had embarrassed her son enough with all her kisses, she asked, “And who is this little filly?”
Gerry turned to Ann and, taking her hand, said, “Mum this is Ann. Ann this is my mum.”
“It is very nice to meet you Mrs. Butler.” Ann went to shake hands with her, but was surprised when she was pulled into a hug.
“Oh please child, call me Margaret. I haven't been Mrs. Butler since Gerard was a baby. And what a cute baby he was. I should show you pictures later.”
“Muuuum, stop it.”
“Oh hush. I swear, he just won't let me gloat about having the best son in the world,” Margaret said hugging her son once more. “Ger, take these bags up to your room. I need to get to know this girl who has stolen your heart.” She took Ann’s hand and led her into the house. “I have you know how you got him to settle down.”
“To be honest I don’t really know,” Ann said feeling a bit nervous.
“Well you certainly did do a number on him. I have never heard him talk about anyone the way he does of you.”
“I guess that is a good thing.” Ann watched as Margaret flew around the kitchen fixing dinner. “Do you need any help with anything?”
“Nope, I have everything under control. You just go upstairs and get cleaned up. You must have had a long flight. I will let you know when dinner is ready.”
Ann went upstairs and immediately found Gerry's room. He was the youngest so his mum had left it the way he had, Ann guessed so she didn’t feel so alone. When she walked in there were football posters all over the walls as well as posters of bands that were popular around the time she was born. She walked over to the bed, and found Gerry half asleep. Ann crawled up under his arms. “I am so glad mum put a bigger bed in here,” Gerry said. “There used to be only a twin, and there is no way we could have fit on there.”
“Oh you would be surprised how comfortable it would have been.”
“Well yeah, but you would have to sleep on top of me.”
“And what is wrong with that?”
“Well nothing.” Gerry began to stroke Ann’s arm and kiss her neck.
“We should really get in the shower.”
“I like this we thing.”
“Gerry stop it! We should at least wait until everyone is asleep.”
“Good point. But I still need you to wash my back,” he said with a sexy wink.
“I think you are old enough to do that yourself.”
“But Annnnnn,” he whined.
“Hey you two,” Margaret yelled from the kitchen, “no funny business in my house. At least wait till I am asleep and sneak out.”
“See Gerry,” Ann giggled. “No funny business, just like mum said. You get in the shower and wake me when you get out.”
He pulled a face, but did as he was told. Ann fell right asleep into a flashback of their night before the fire. All of a sudden, she felt something wet on her face and opened her eyes to see Gerry mopping her face with his hair. “Just for that, you can put on your own lotion,” Ann said as she shut the bathroom door.
When Ann was out of the shower and dressed, she walked down the stairs and was hit by the smell of a mother’s cooking. The second thing she noticed was a lot of noise. “Ann,” Gerry shouted over all of the talking, you're out. This is my oldest brother Douglas.”
“Nice to meet you,” Ann said as she shook hands with what looked like an older version of Gerry.
“And I am the much cuter middle brother,” Gerry’s other brother said as he grabbed Ann’s hand and kissed it.
“You must be Adrian,” Ann giggled.
“He’s quote unquote the ladies man,” Gerry said with a smirk.
“But you have to admit Ad,” Douglas said, “our little Ger gave you quite a run for your money.”
“Shut up,” Gerry said punching Doug’s arm. He hit back and then Adrian joined in. Ann laughed as Gerry was tackled to the ground. They continued to wrestle for a few more minuets until they were interrupted by the smallest, sweetest voice Ann had ever heard. “Dada,” Emma said, “stop picking on people smaller than you.”
“But they started it,” Doug said as the small girl with a head full of bright red ringlets ran to him.
“That isn’t true, is it Uncle Gerwe?” she asked.
“Absolutly not, Adrian started it. Emma gave both her uncles big hugs. “Emma, do you see who that is?” Gerry asked pointing in Ann’s direction.
“It’s Ann!” Emma exclaimed after he mouth dropped wide open.
“A little birdie told me that you are my biggest fan,” Ann said with a smile.
“Yes I am,” Emma said shyly.
“Well you know what all my biggest fans get?”
“What?”
“A big hug.” Ann opened her arms. Emma looked to her father for permission and when he gave the go ahead, she lept into Ann’s arms with all her 4 year old body had.
“Will you sing me a song?”
“Maybe after dinner.”
Dinner was great. Margaret cooked a huge pot roast that was better than Ann had had in years. A few times during dinner she caught Gerry stuffing his mouth. “Ger,” his mum said, “you’re going to get a tummy ache if you keep eating like that.”
“Ohhhh, baby Gerard is gonna get a tummy ache,” his brothers teased in unison.
Without a wasted second, Margaret reached across the table and smacked them. “Don’t you be making fun of my baby,” Margaret said as she held Gerry to her. Ann and Nancy laughed as Emma kissed her father’s forehead.
After dinner was over, most everyone stayed in the dinning room drinking tea and eating dessert. Emma was getting wrestles, and Ann offered to watch her while Nancy took a break. “Really Ann,” Nancy said, “you don’t have to do this.”
“It’s okay. I did promise her a song after dinner. Besides, you play mom everyday, it is time you had a break, if only for a short time.”
“Thanks.”
“No problem.” Ann walked over to where Emma was sitting on the floor. Spread out before her was a mass of dolls and doll clothes. “Can I play?”
“You like playing with dolls?” Emma asked with amazment.
“Of course I do,” Ann replied with a giggle. “I had all kinds of dolls as a child. I used to make them little houses out of shoe boxes.”
“I never thought of that.”
Ann and Emma played with the dolls for almost an hour. Before walking into the living room to relax, Gerry stood in the door way, out of sight from the girls on the floor. He watched as Ann helped Emma make up stories about he dolls and pack little bags so they could go on vacation. He had a strange thought standing there. He, for the first time thought of having kids of his own. There was something about how Ann related to kids they met in the park and how much they loved her, regardless of her fame, that made him long to be a father.
His thoughts were interrupted when the rest of the family walked into the living room. “So when are you gonna sing us that song?” Adrian asked.
“Well I guess I could do it now.”
“Could you play my favorite song?” Emma asked as Ann got her guitar out of it’s case.
“Which one is it?” Ann asked.
“Wreck of the Day.”
“I will sing that one then I will sing a new one.” Ann began to sing and Emma joined in with her. Even though the song was a sad one, that had sad memories, singing it this time, in front of Gerry's family and with his niece singing with her, made her smile. It was almost cleansing to get it out of her system.
When she finished, everyone clapped. “That song never ceases to make me cry,” Nancy said wiping her eyes.
“To be honest,” Ann replied, “that is the first time I’ve sung that song and not cried.”
“So what is this new one?” Margaret asked.
“Well actually, it is really new. I just wrote it a few weeks ago. There is only one other person that has ever heard it, so just be warned it isn’t perfect yet.” As Ann began to sing “Winners”, the room when silent. Gerry stared at her with all the intensity he had, and everyone saw it.
When she finished, everyone just sat there. If they didn’t know what the song was about before she sang it, they knew now. It was obvious the way that Gerry and Ann never took their eyes off each other. Finally, Margaret began to applaud and everyone else followed suit. “That was beautiful Ann,” she said giving her a hug. “I am so glad that he has you.”
Emma began to yawn. Doug and Nancy took that as their cue to get on home. It was a short trip because they lived only a few streets over. Adrian was going to stay with them for a few days, so he was getting ready to leave as well. When everyone walked outside to say goodbye for the evening, Adrian pulled Ann aside. “I don’t know if you know this, but you are the best thing that ever happened to him,” he said. Ann looked confused. “No I mean it. He has been through some hard times in his life. He took it the worst when our dad left. But from what I know, you seemed to have tamed the beast.” Ann chuckled at that and gave Adrian a hug before he got in the car.
As they pulled out of the driveway, Margaret snuck a look at her son and Ann stealing a kiss. “Well, I am just so tired,” she said as she yawned quite loudly. “I think I am going to go to bed.” Ann looked over as Margaret winked at her.
When the door was shut, Ann turned to Gerry. “Take me on a walk.”
**** “Yes mam,” he said with a smirk. He opened the door, grabbed a blanket, and told his mum not to wait up for them.
As they began to walk in the moonlight, Ann looked up at him. They hadn’t really said anything since they had left the house, but he the way he held her arm as the walked along the road said a thousand words. “God I love you,” Ann whispered as she snuggled up against him.
“I love you too,” he replied kissing her forehead.
A few more minuets of silence later, they came to the beach. “I didn’t know there was beach here,” Ann said with shock.
“This is Scotland, love. We have everything. Plus, its an island.”
“Stop making fun of me.”
“But I brought a blanket.”
“Oh well that certainly makes up for you all but saying I was an idiot,” Ann said sarcastically.
“How can I make it up to you?”
“Tell me about the stars.”
“Glad to.” As Gerry laid the blanket on the sand, he silently thanked himself for taking an astronomy class while in collage. At the time it seemed stupid, but now it was paying off. While he told her about all the constellations and the stories behind a few of them, Ann laid in the crook of his arm.
It was a beautiful August night and there was a slight breeze coming off the ocean. When Gerry was done with his little star lesson, he looked over at Ann. She had a look on her face that made Gerry love her even more. She laid there staring at the stars as though she had never seen them before. She had the biggest smile on her face, as if she was about to giggle. “Gerry just look at them,” Ann said referring to the stars. “It is like someone took a whole bunch of glitter and threw it at the sky and it stuck.”
As Gerry turned his face towards the sky, he saw a shooting star. “Did you see that?” he asked.
“I was just about to ask you that. Did you make a wish?”
“Yes.”
“What was it?”
“I can't tell you that. I can give you a hint thought,” he said with a sexy smirk. He reached over and grabbed Ann’s face with his hand and pulled her into a kiss. As he tasted her with his tongue, he cupped her breast with his other hand. By the time the kiss was broken, they were both breathing heavily.
“Funny you should wish that because I was thinking the same thing,” Ann said as she climbed on top of him. Luckily she had worn a skirt and Gerry mad little work of ripping her panties off. With a giggle, Ann freed Gerry from his pants and got to work.

The next morning, Margaret let the two of them sleep a while longer. Around 10, she decided it was time for them to get up. As they showered, Margaret began to gather up their laundry. When she found the pile of what they had worn the night before, As she walked back down the hallway, carrying their clothes as sand fell out of the pockets, she heard Gerry in the bathroom say “I think I am gonna have sand in my arse for a while. She laughed and shook her head as she continued walking. ‘Well at least they are having fun here,’ she thought.****
