Chapter 27

“This traffic is fucking insane.” Rob said to Brody and Renee as they made their way through the streets of London. Rob had finally conceded to his management to come in for a meeting, even though North America was gone it was business as usual in the rest of the world. Rob had even morbidly joked that at least the pressure of cracking North America was gone now. “What is the hold up?”

Instantly a sense of deja vu came over Rob and Brody and they remembered the day several months ago on the highway in Los Angeles. They exchanged looks in the mirror, moments later Brody was reaching into his glove box for his gun and Rob was pulling one out from under the seat where they always stored a few of them.

“What is it?” Renee asked calmly reaching under the seat for a handgun.

“Something just feels wrong.” Rob answered, craning his neck and looking out the window.

“Can you get us out of here?” Renee asked Brody, who just shook his head.

“Too late.” He said pointing toward the surge of people running toward them. About 30 people running and screaming, behind them there were about 15 zombies. Both groups ran past them, the zombies intent on their easy prey.

“Oh God...they're here. How did they get here?” Renee asked, fighting back tears or frustration and horror....there would be no place to escape to now. But before they could answer the window beside Renee was broken and a large hand was grabbing her hair and dragging her out through the window.

“Renee!” Rob grabbed her arm and tried to pull her back in, she was screaming and trying to fight off the zombie that had her, suddenly Rob felt Renee stop struggling and he looked into her eyes, they were filled with tears.

“I loved you.” She said as she was finally pulled out.

“No!” Rob shouted and moved to open the door.

“It's too late. Look she's been bitten, that's why she stopped fighting.” Brody told Rob. Rob nodded and looked out the window, saw that Renee was on the ground crying, several chunks of flesh had been ripped off of her arm and the monster was pulling her clothes aside to go for her stomach. Rob aimed and shot the thing through it's head and then locked eyes with Renee.

“Remember your promise.” She said weakly, tears streaming down her face. “Don't let me be like that.” She begged.

“I loved you too Renee and I remember.” He aimed then and shot her. The noise of the gunshots got the attention of some other zombies and they turned back toward the car.

“We can't get out of this one Rob.” Brody said solemnly.

“No.” Rob was silent for a moment as he watched, Renee's blood pool around her. “But lets get as many as we can.”

“Let's do it.”

They got about 25 before they were overwhelmed, Rob watched Brody put his own gun into his mouth just as a zombie reached in and tried to pull him out. There were at least 50 surrounding the car now and with a prayer that it would be fast and painless for his family Rob pulled his own trigger and joined Renee in a place where the zombies could never follow them.

The End!!

Not a happy ending I know but really could there ever be after for this story?
