Chapter 27
Wil was a bit nervous. He could hear her humming to herself as she got their drinks and he felt ridiculous. Was he really going to tell her about his drug addiction over a cup of coffee? That would be something nice to just drop into the conversation. He hadn’t thought about it on this walk over here – he’d just focused on what he was going to say to her about his feelings and all that other bullshit that he couldn’t handle, he didn’t know how to deal with. He wanted her to know, but he was weak, he didn’t know how his emotions worked and why they did this to him. Why they made him latch on to the one good thing in his life this way when all he’d wanted to do was stop himself falling in love with her. He didn’t want to drag her down.
Maybe he could get clean. Maybe he would, and maybe they would be happy. Maybe.
She came back into the room, a blanket under her arm and two mugs in her hands. She passed one to him, and put hers on the coffee table. She sat next to him, passed him the blanket, and then picked her drink up again.
He watched as she laced her fingers around the handle of the mug, and then he watched as she blew on the liquid slightly before she sipped it. Everything about her was so defined, so beautiful. Her defined cheek bones, her small nose, her perfectly pouted lips. The way she cared for him from day one, when she didn’t even know him. He was truly lucky to know her. He just felt terrible for wanting her more than anything when he knows he is nothing but trouble.
“So,” she lent back on the sofa, bring her legs up underneath her. “Are you ready to tell me now?”
He took a big gulp of his coffee, trying to prolong the awkwardness that was about to come spewing out of his mouth. He was aware she was watching him as he put his coffee down, and pulled the blanket up under his armpits.
“You just … you have to understand that I want to tell you what’s going on, why … why everything is so strange, but I can’t, not now. Soon, so, so soon, just not now. I don’t want to drag you into this, to this mess.”
“Listen, Wil. I’m never going to ask you about what you do when you’re not with me. If you want to tell me, I’ll always listen, but I’m not going to force you to tell me. I’ve always got your back, though, regardless. I’ll always stick up for you and trust you to tell me if I’m doing the wrong thing. I don’t mind what you do when you’re not with me, as long as you’re always honest about how you feel about me and our situation.”
“I will always be honest with you about how I feel about you,” he put a hand on her cheek, and then kissed her. He put his hand on hers. “Alyn, I’ve never had a real relationship, not with anyone. Not even with a brother or sister, not even with my parents. I don’t know what love is, but I know what I feel for you is the closest I’ve ever had to a real relationship. To love.”
“Love?”
He nodded, fiddling with the blanket.
“Are you saying-?”
“If it’s totally not the wrong thing to say, then yeah, I am.”
She sprung up from the sofa, and turned away from him, her arms crossed over her chest.
Oh shit. It was the wrong thing, totally the wrong thing. She doesn’t feel the same, does she? Shit.
He stood too, slowly, and approached her.
“Alyn?”
He put a hand on her shoulder, and he felt her body shake. She turned, tears rolling down her eyes, and kissed him. He was shocked by her sudden passion, but he couldn’t say he minded. God, she really was stunning.
He held her close, feeling her body tremble and tasting her tears. He knew this wasn’t about sex for her, this was about intimacy, being close to someone who cared for you, who had love for you. He knew because he felt it too.
She broke the kiss, but kept their foreheads touching. Her eyes were cast downwards, but he looked at her closed eye lids, willing her to look up, to share this moment with him. A tear dripped from her nose, and then she looked up, before smiling slightly.
“I bet I look like a mess.”
He smiled, still holding her gaze. “I’ve never seen anyone more beautiful.”
“You’re freezing, Wil.”
“Warm me up?”
She kissed him again, and turned around. He wondered what she was doing until she started walking backwards, towards her bedroom.
“Alyn-“
“I want you, Wil,” she whispered. “I need you.”
His lips found hers again. He didn’t need anymore encouragement.
