“Hey,” Ashley greeted her as she closed the door to the suite.
“Hi,” Kelly spoke quietly as she sat on the couch, the pink bunny sitting right next to her.
“So, we didn’t really get a chance to talk today. How are you holding up,” the stylist asked as she sat across her best friend.
Kelly sighed. “I’m alright,” she shrugged as she absentmindedly touched the bunny.
“Aren’t you a little old for that,” Ashley pointed, trying to lighten the mood.
The Texan chuckled lightly as she held it up to Ashley. “No, see. It’s a gift from Carrie,” she beamed. “Look,” she said squeezing it and making it go off. She’d resisted the urge of squeezing it until then, fearing she would cry at hearing Carrie’s voice.
Ashley smiled. “Aw. Young love…sickening.” Kelly frowned as she apologized. “Ok, you know I’m kidding. That’s actually pretty sweet.”
Kelly’s face softened as she started remembering the time she’d gotten to spend with Carrie away from everyone. “She got it because she figured I’d like to hear that whenever I wanted to. I get to see so much more of her that everyone else.”
Ashley laughed, before Kelly could finish. “Not like that, you nerd. I just can’t describe how she makes me feel. It’s like I feel whole, like I’m home, you know?”
The stylist smiled as she stood and came to sit next to Kelly. She knew her friend and expected what came next.
As soon as she sat, Kelly clung to her and finally cried before she quickly pulled back. “I’m sorry,” she apologized, wiping her cheeks.
“Hey,” Ashley soothed. “What’s going on, Kel? I mean, I get that you miss her, but you’ll see her in a couple of weeks.”
Kelly’s gaze lowered. “I know that, but…I just…I don’t know. I mean, I’ve tried the long distance thing before. You know how that turned out.”
Ashley sighed at the admission. Kelly was finally addressing her issue. “Honey, she’s not Graham, ok?”
“I know that. I’m just really afraid it’s gonna happen again.”
“Kel,” Ashley faced her. “Listen, you know what happened with him so just don’t make the same mistakes again…”
The Texan chuckled. “I know. I’m just kinda scared.”
“Sweetie, that’s love. It’s the risk you have to take. I mean, you love her and you want to be with her, right?”
Kelly smiled sadly. “Of course.”
“Well, trust that. You need to give her a chance, Kel, or you could lose a great thing. She doesn’t deserve the blame of the past.”
Kelly nodded. “Yeah.”
“Have you talked to her today?”
Kelly’s eyes lit up. “Only twice, when she got to the airport and during her layover, but she did send me about 15 texts from the plane.”
Ashley laughed. “Oh, honey, she’s got it bad.”
“You think?”
“From what you just said, I don’t think, I know. My advice,” she smiled. “Talk to her about it. I guarantee you that she’s probably got the same fears you do.”
Kelly sighed. “I just don’t want to seem so insecure…”
“Well, it’s your call. But don’t let the little things fester. They end up becoming bigger things. Make communication a priority.”
“Thanks, Ash,” she closed the gap and hugged her.
“Don’t mention it,” she pulled back. “And not to sound all mom or anything, but get some sleep. You look tired.”
Kelly laughed. “Yes, ma’am.”

Carrie sat in her bed on the back of the tour bus as she wrote Kelly an email before heading to sound check. It had been their little ritual for the past week: emails, calls, texts. It was like they were teenagers again, but she loved every second of it. She smiled as she added the last few words before sending it. As she was closing her laptop, she heard a knock on her door.
“Hey, Carrie,” she could hear Matt’s voice.
“I’m coming,” she answered as she stood and opened the door. “Hey, sorry,” she apologized. “I was just sending an email.”
He smiled. “No problems. I got a surprise for you.”
Her eyes light up. “She’s here,” she asked excitedly, making him laugh.
“Um, no. But there’s someone here…” he turned as Carrie’s sister came from behind him.
“Steph,” she greeted her with a huge hug. “What are you doing here?”
“What kind of greeting is that for your big sis,” she frowned.
“No, no. You have no idea how great it is to see you,” Carrie smiled.
“You too. I had a few days and figured I’d surprise you. Hope that’s alright.”
Carrie rolled her eyes playfully. “Duh. Family’s always welcomed, you know that.”
“Good, good.”
“Matt,” Carrie turned to her sister. “Can you have them push sound check back an hour?”
Matt shrugged. “Alright, but you owe me.”
Carrie laughed. “I know. Thanks.”
“Yeah, yeah,” he called over his shoulder as he stepped out of the bus, going towards the arena.
“So, tell me,” the blonde guided her sister to the couch at the front of the bus. “What have you been up to?”
Stephanie smiled. “You know, the usual. Kids, work. But anyway, you’re the one with the globetrotting lifestyle. Mom said you were in Australia for two weeks. How was that?”
Carrie smiled, recalling her time with Kelly instead of her work. “Oh, it was great!”
Stephanie nodded. “Meet any hotties?”
Carrie laughed. “Not really,” she covered. She started debating whether that was the opening to tell her sister about Kelly, but decided not to. She figured that would be a later conversation. “But it was gorgeous. I’m thinking of taking y’all.”
“Seriously,” her sister asked, her eyes widened. “But Care, that would be insanely expensive.”
The blonde smiled. “Hey, I’m doing alright. Don’t worry. I think mom and dad would love it down there.”
She suddenly felt her pocket vibrating and took her phone to check who it was. She smiled as she saw the name flash on the screen. “Do you mind,” she motioned to her phone.
Stephanie shook her head. “Go ahead.” She could tell from the way her sister’s eyes twinkled that this was a phone call she needed to get.
“Hi,” Carrie answered, trying her best not to sound as giddy as she felt, knowing her sister was sitting next to her.
“Hey, gorgeous,” Kelly answered and Carrie could hear her smiling. “How’s my girl?”
“Um, I’m good,” Carrie stood. “Steph surprised me and is here. We’re catching up before sound check.”
“Aw, Care, that’s great. I love when family shows up…”
“I know. Me too,” she smiled at her sister.
“So, I’m not going to keep you…”
“It’s ok, babe,” she quickly answered. “You know I missed hearing from you,” she blurted.
“I know,” Kelly’s smiled widened. “But we can talk later. Spend some time with your sister. I hope to meet her someday.”
“Oh, you will. I promise.”
“I love you, Care. And I get to see you in about a week! I’m so excited,” she practically shrieked.
Carrie laughed. “I know. Me too. Talk more later,” she asked.
“Yes. So bye for now.”
“Bye,” Carrie sighed. She hung up and placed the phone back in her pocket before she turned back to her sister. “Sorry.”
Stephanie nodded. “So…” She stared right at Carrie. “Who is he?”
Carrie’s jaw dropped. “What,” she practically choked.
“I know you, Care. The quiet tones, googly eyes. Someone has you like this. Come on, share,” her sister smiled. “I wanna know who it is.”
Carrie laughed nervously. “No one. Really.” She glanced at the clock above her sister. “Um, actually, I think I need to head to sound check. I don’t wanna make them wait.”
“Care…” her sister’s smiled faded. “Are you sure?”
She felt guilty as she looked at her sister. “Um, ok, there is someone,” she began hesitantly. “But I just, I don’t know how you’re gonna feel about this.”
“What,” her sister asked. Carrie was acting strange and she was starting to get worried. “He’s not married, is he?”
“What,” Carrie laughed. “No.”
“Ok, good,” Stephanie sighed. “Oh, please don’t tell me you got back together with Tony?”
Carrie sat back down in a fit of giggles. “No. Definitely not. We are way over and done with. Trust me.”
“Well, then,” her sister shrugged. “I really can’t think of anything else. Would you just tell me who was on the phone?”
Carrie took a deep breath as a weird sense of calmness came over her. She knew her sister would continue to ask her and she didn’t know how long she could actually keep avoiding telling her the truth.
“Are you sure,” she asked one last time.
“Yes,” her sister nodded.
“It was Kelly,” she answered, waiting for her sister.
“Who’s Kelly,” Stephanie asked confused. “Is he with the band, a songwriter?”
Carrie laughed at how close her sister was. “Well, Kelly does write her own songs…”
Stephanie froze as she heard the word. “Her?”
Carrie’s face paled. “Yes.”
“Wait a minute,” her sister stood. “What do you mean, ‘her’ as in a she?”
Carrie stood walking up to her sister who was already pacing. “Do you remember the night we went down to the Wild Horse?”
“Yeah,” she nodded slowly.
“Well, remember that Kelly Clarkson was singing there…”
The look of recognition flashed over Stephanie’s face. “You mean to tell me…”
Carrie just could not help the smile that came over her as she remembered those gorgeous hazel eyes and the Texan’s arms wrapped around her. “Yes. That Kelly.”
As the shock subsided, her sister’s face fell. “But Care. You’re not, you know…” she gestured with her hand, not wanting to say the word. “You only date guys. Wait, had you ever…”
Carrie chuckled in spite of herself. “No. Kelly’s the first.”
Stephanie sighed as she grew quiet. Carrie just stood there eyeing her sister and feeling more awkward as each second passed.
“Please say something,” she whispered, pleadingly.
“I, uh,” Stephanie stopped right in front of her. “Care, I don’t know what to say.”
Carrie closed her eyes, willing the tears she could feel forming from coming out. “Look,” she exhaled. “I know. This isn’t what I wanted or expected. I know it’s not what anyone would want for me, but…”
“Do they know,” Shanna interrupted, raising her hand.
“No.”
“Then who knows?”
“The only people who know are Matt and Kelly’s brother,” she omitted Kelly’s friends hoping it would make the situation better. “And they only know because we need them to help us with our schedules.”
“Care, do you realize what you’re doing,” her sister asked, the concern evident in her eyes. “This could kill your career, not to mention break mom and dad’s hearts.”
Carrie’s tears finally fell. “I know that. I think about that every single day. I don’t like lying to anyone, you know that,” her voice sounded raspy as she cried.
“Then why?”
“Because,” she found her voice again. “I love her, Steph. It’s that simple. She makes everything worth it. The way I feel when I’m with her…I can’t even explain it. I feel so loved that I could burst.”
“Care…”
“No,” she stood firm. “I know this is hard to process. Trust me. It was hard for me to deal with at first, but if you met her…”
Stephanie shook her head. “I don’t think that would change anything, Care. It’s still wrong.”
Carrie sighed. “You’re entitled to your opinion. But you’re my sister and I love you. All I’m asking is for you to give her a chance. Get to know her before you judge her. She loves me, Steph. And for once in my life, I can honestly say I’m genuinely happy. Do you not know how hard it is to find that?”
Stephanie’s face softened. “Yeah,” she barely answered. “Ok, sis. I’m gonna trust your judgment for now.”
“Thanks,” she replied as she wiped her cheek.
“Come here,” Stephanie gave her a hug. “I’m sorry. I don’t mean to make this harder on you. It’s just kind of a lot to deal with.”
Carrie smiled. “I know. Um, you know,” she hesitated. “She’s coming out to see me next week.”
“She is?”
“Yeah…That’s what she does,” Carrie’s eyes twinkled. “She knows how much I miss her, so she’s instructed Jason to make sure we can see each other while I’m on tour.”
“Huh. Isn’t she touring too,” Stephanie asked.
“Yeah. She’s with Reba and she’s gearing up for her new single and album, which she has to promote and stuff. But she told me last night that I’m more important. She’s cramming a whole week of promo into three days her next break just so she can be with me next week.”
“Well, good to know that she realizes how lucky she is,” Stephanie smiled fondly at her sister.
“I’m the lucky one,” Carrie beamed.
Stephanie was slowly starting to come around, not that she would ever get used to the idea of her sister being in a relationship with Kelly of all people. She still remembered coming over to watch Idol with Carrie and both of them voting for the girl. But she had to admit, she’d never seen her sister seem that happy with everything. Maybe this wouldn’t be such a bad thing after all.
