‘JAMIE KAY!’ shouted Sid as he saw Jade and ‘the baby’ as she would be forever known walking into the enclosed backstage area of the Download festival, Donnington.
‘SIDNEEEEEEEEEEEEEY!’ Jamie squeaked in reply, letting go of Jade’s hand and running hell for leather across the grass and leaping into his arms, immediately being tossed right up in the air and onto his shoulders and he did funny voices at her to make her laugh. Another two years had passed and Hellbound and Slipknot were once again reunited as co headliners of the Download festival, something Jade and the rest of her band had been looking forward to immensely. They hadn’t played live save a string of small acoustic shows in a small stripped down tour of the UK for over two years, and each member couldn’t wait to get back out there and play the new material that would make up the forthcoming album ‘Beyond the Edge’. Pretty much as soon as Jade had entered the back stage area that morning she had got the measure of the day to come.
‘My dude, come here! Show me love! And damn girl gimmie a twirl! You look good bitch! Oh here drink this’ exclaimed Corey as he came ambling over and gave Jade a hug and a kiss, noticing how amazing she had looked since the last time he had seen her. Jade hugged and kissed him, accepting the large glass of vodka and red bull and then did a little spin around as she held his hand, Corey doing a long low wolf whistle. Gone was the thin, pale little frame replaced by a tanned body with the kind of curves you could ski off. A couple of months in Jamaica spending time with family from her father’s side had done Jade the power of good, and it had also meant her uber active 72 year old grandfather Julius hadn’t let her sit on her butt all day long but dragged her along for beach runs and work outs. It had pad off very nicely.
‘Wow look you’ve even got an actual round ass now too, meow’ said Corey, giving her cheek a nibble as he pinched her butt, making her giggle and blush. She was used to the fact he was a shameless flirt after being friends for seven years but he still made her go red.
‘You’re looking good yourself mate, shit you’ve lost the beer belly!’ said Jade, stroking his now more flattened stomach.
‘I know, I’m young free and single and I ain’t fat no more either! WOOOO!’ he shouted just as the rest of Hellbound finally caught up after a Jen vs security argument at the gate. Since she had re grown all her hair and stopped dressing quite so much like Tank Girl some people had a hard time believing she was who she said she was. Corey said hello to the rest of the girls while Jade excused herself to go and locate her daughter. She found her sat atop a big refrigerated rider drinking a coke and telling Mick about the songs she had learned on her guitar.
‘Mom taught me a load of Coal Chamber stuff because it’s simple, and when we went to see Manson a few months back John 5 taught me how to play Irresponsible Hate Anthem too’ said Jamie as Mick smiled down at her.
‘So you’re just collecting guitar lessons from rock stars huh small dude?’ said Mick as Jamie sipped her coke.
‘Yeah dude! I’m taking advantage of who my mom is to further my talent, do you blame me?’ said Jamie, eyes wide with a shrug. Sid and Mick looked at each other and then said ‘Lisa Simpson’ at the same time then started laughing. It had been Slipknot’s collective pet name for the impressively bright and articulate six year old (who had the mental age and capacity of a ten year old) since she had been about three.
‘Anyway, can someone take me to find my Jimbo? I’ve missed him’ then said Jamie, finishing her coke and tossing the can into a big black refuse sack.
‘Erm, here’s the thing tiny girl. Sam’s out here with him and things are a bit hmmmmm right about now’ said Sid, pulling a strained face and waving his hand in a so so gesture.
‘You mean they’re having a big fat row yeah?’ said Jamie, pulling a face Sid recognised to be directly inherited from her mother.
‘Exactly buddy, so how about you and me head out front and go mooch around all those stalls before this place fills with a few thousand people and gets all muddy and crowed and shit?’ said Sid.
‘Yeah okay, let me just go tell my mom’ said Jamie, scrambling down off the rider and running off in the direction of her mother. She told her where she was going, and was hugged and kissed and told to be good and with that Jamie was hoisted back up onto Sid’s shoulders and taken off in search of ‘stuff and cool things, and cool things and stuff’ as he had put it.
‘Hey cowgirl’ said Mick as Jade reached his side, reaching out and taking off her black cowboy hat and putting it on his own head, giving her a wink.
‘I look stupid don’t I?’ he then said.
‘Oh yeah’ replied Jade, taking her hat back and laughing as a noise of a door being flung open in the not so far off distance made her jump.
‘And here we have it ladies and gentlemen, hurricane Samantha’ said Mick with scorn as he watched Jim’s girlfriend stomping out of their bus and walking off in a huff.
‘You really don’t like her do you?’ said Jade, taking a cigarette he offered and swigging her drink.
‘What’s to like?’ he snorted as he lit his cigarette and offered the flame to the end of hers too. Just then Jim walked off the bus and headed in their direction, looking a touch pissed off. And so hot Jade suddenly felt Mick’s fingers under her chin closing her mouth.
‘Dude, you’re married, stop’ he said, laughing through his nose.
‘Yeah I can look’ said Jade, making Mick laugh loudly.
‘SOMEONE! BEER ME!’ Shouted Jim as he neared them. Mick opened the lid of the rider and unscrewed a beer, throwing it out to Jim who neatly caught it and then disappeared it in three gulps.
‘Thanks man, I need that and WOAH!’ Jim suddenly said as Jade approached.
‘Hey you’ she said, giving him a little wave.
‘Hey you too, and that top you’re almost wearing’ said Jim, moving around Mick to give her a hug. She looked stunning. Dressed in a pair of dark brown tight leather jeans and matching colour New Rock boots, and a white top with a baggy low cut front and no back. ‘Well look at you, don’t you just have everything sticking out in all the right places’ he continued, his hand briefly touching her hip as they hugged. Feeling it touch her for just that brief second Jade’s breath caught in her throat and she looked at her left hand and shook herself from her momentary daze as her wedding ring sparkled in the sun, reminding her to behave.
‘Hell at least I’m wearing one’ she said, slapping his bare chest and laughing, trying to subside how seeing him, looking more sculpted with definition than just lean, was making her feel inside. She cursed the fact that Stefan wasn’t there, and after excusing herself she chose to stay away from Jim for a while until her husband did get by her side later that day after having a lie in at the hotel. Jim looked disturbingly good, and as she walked away one word quietly left Jim’s mouth, making Mick almost spray a mouthful of beer everywhere as he laughed.
‘Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn’ he said, watching the way she swung her hips as she walked away, his thoughts becoming way dirtier than they should have considering their relationship statuses.
‘So, what’s your woman complaining about now then? Said Mick in reference to Sam.
‘One word- them’ said Jim, pointing over to where Hellbound were stood talking to various people from the few bands who had already arrived.
‘Any female friends I have she automatically feels threatened by, especially them though’ Jim continued as he frowned. He really didn’t know why he was putting up with Sam and her drama anymore; in the beginning her neuroses about other women in Jim’s life had been tolerable, but now her insecurities only irritated him to the point of him telling her to pack up her belongings and fly home, which was the reason for her tantrum only a few minutes ago when she stormed off the tour bus.
‘I think you gotta remember that line your mama told you right now about a pretty face, and how it’s charms will only last so long’ said Mick, sipping his beer and reaching for two more.
‘I think you’re right man, but if it isn’t over already it’s sure as fuck going to be soon. I’ve had enough’ said Jim, who then looked even more moody as he saw Sam walking back over to him; where she unleashed verbal tirade number two of that morning. He grabbed her by the wrist and hauled her back to the tour bus, beyond embarrassed that she chose to air her dirty laundry in front of so many people. By the time he left the bus again he was a single man, and got as far away from her and her screaming at him at what an asshole he was as he could; and then proceeded to get hammered while two security guards showed his ex to the front gate.
Because of the aforementioned getting hammered, most people who encountered Jim that day found him to be extremely lucid, mostly in a very humorous or crude way, but also some in a bluntly honest way. Two fans in their late thirties with VIP privileges who were talking to him and Corey at that moment got a mix of all three as they asked him questions.
‘So is it true you were humping Jade Barry for a while back in the day?’ said one guy, making Corey snort with laughter into his vodka redbull while Jim just raised his eyebrows and looked away for a few moments. He then looked back at the guy and answered without saying a word. He just smiled at the many memories, licked his top lip and nodded a couple of times before shuddering in a pleasant way.
‘Oh damn that answers it! Look at his face Dean!’ the guy roared laughing, nudging his friend.
‘Lucky bastard’ said Dean, offering his hand for Jim to shake, who did at the four men laughed.
‘Nah, it’s your man over there that’s the luckiest now’ said Jim, pointing with the neck of the bottle of beer he was near to finishing over to where Jade stood wrapped in Stefan’s arms posing for a picture to be taken of them by Kerrang! Magazine.
‘Now is it just me, or do I get the impression that guy thinks he’s badass just because of who he’s married to?’ said the guy quietly as he leaned closer to Jim and Corey, who both nodded.
‘And do I also take it from those faces you two aren’t all that keen on him either?’ he then continued, seeing a firm no head shake from both of them.
‘Shhhhhh’ said Corey, ‘We keep that bit quiet because we love her though, so keep it to yourselves fellas’ said Corey, to which the two fans assured him they would. There were certain fans it was possible to talk on a deeper level to without the fear of them blabbing, mostly those over thirty just waned to talk to them like they were someone they had just randomly met in a bar or club and got on with, forgetting what they did for a living entirely and just focusing on the people they were. And a little later that evening just half an hour before going on stage Jade was focusing on one thing- where the hell Stefan had gone.
‘Look leave Jamie with me I’ll stand with her while you’re on, c’mon kiddo let’s go stake out a spot stage side huh?’ said Joey, extending his hand which she held. Sid and Joey reminded her of what it might be like if she had big brothers, Jamie loved them.
‘Thanks Joey Jo, I’ll go take another lap out back and then come back if he’s a no show’ said Jade. Turns out that after walking around the backstage area, Kerrang! Tent and Metal Hammer tent also he really was nowhere to be seen, and by then knew loud and clear he was making a point. He had complained earlier in the day about her spending too much time with her friends and leaving him, and now since he and his old bass player from the now defunct Abyss had met up he was off with her, and a few of their mutual friends from Norway. It pissed her off that when she was up on stage playing he was still nowhere to be seen, but what pissed her off most was that he wasn’t there to fulfil his fatherly duties and look after their daughter while Hellbound were on.
Especially now poor Joey was lumbered with a sleeping child clung on around him, her head lolled back over his shoulder as he held her tightly. He was a drummer, strong arms were his speciality and he really didn’t mind either but Jade still kept looking over and mouthing ‘I’m sorry’ throughout the set. ‘It’s fine’ he’d mouth back, knowing Jamie was tired anyway as she was yawning so much, one of the reasons he’d picked her up in the first place since she had a habit of falling asleep standing up. It also meant he had just about the best seats in the house too. After Hellbound had finished Jade came straight off and retrieved her daughter from Joey, and a bottle of water from Remi. After all these years, come rain or shine they still had their beloved ‘turbonater’ working for them. He was like one of the family now.
‘Jade, Scuzz TV said they want to move your interview forward to now if that’d be possible?’ said Remi as they walked from the stage and the deafening roars demanding another encore. Jamie slept on, a child of rock and roll never lets a little thing like a few thousand decibels get in their way of a nap.
‘Fuck, no I have to look after Jamie; I suppose Stefan hasn’t reappeared yet? Said Jade, giving the finger to several photographers taking her picture; she hated it when they snapped Jamie too without asking her first.
‘I haven’t seen him since before Throwdown went on the second stage earlier, and then briefly when Drowning Pool were on just after’ said Joey, with Remi nodding.
‘I went to get whisky with Jim and I saw him watching Drowning Pool and I haven’t seen him since either. Look you go; it’s Tairrie B from My Ruin interviewing you over in the Kerrang! Tent, I’ll look after Jamie until Stefan shows up’ said Remi, taking Jamie from Jade before she could argue.
‘Thanks Remi’ she said as he made his way off to the big marquee that had been set up in the back stage area while Joey walked with Jade over to the Kerrang! tent for her interview with the other Miss B of metal. She looked back and saw Jamie stir and then hug Remi a little tighter as she walked, and felt bad. It wasn’t Remi’s or Joey’s job to babysit; they were her friends and that wasn’t their purpose. It was one of Stefan’s as a father, but he was nowhere to be found, and since cell reception was non existent inside Donnington race track grounds unreachable too. She was becoming a little pissed off with her husband to say the very least.
