Two days had passed since the benefactor stopped by. Candice told Captain that the benefactor was a Dungeons and Dragons fan, which is why he had stuff like a handbook, a set of dice, a pencil, and a spiral notebook packed in his briefcase. He showed her how to play, and she enjoyed it so much that he let her borrow his stuff. She asked Captain if she could start a D&D club. Captain didn't have more than a basic understanding of the game. He knew there had to be a Dungeon Master, and upon realizing they had the perfect candidate for Dungeon Master, he told Candice she could have a D&D club.
Ashley Johnson is an actress you probably recognize more for her voice, as she is the voice actress of Ellie from The Last of Us and Terra from the non-chibi Teen Titans cartoon. She was in a series of videos where a bunch of actors play Dungeons and Dragons in a comic book shop, so Captain figured she would make a perfect Dungeon Master. And sure enough, upon being told about the planned D&D club, Ashley responded "Took long enough."
That was on the day after the benefactor's visit. The next day, the club had its inaugural game in Ashley's room. Ashley moderated the game from the armchair by the window. The players were Candice, Emilia, Meg, and Jessica Nigri. They all sat on the floor and filled out their character sheets, which Ashley then took back.
"Before we start," Ashley spoke, "since Candice is new to this, let's cut her some slack if she asks a lot of questions."
"You know, I could probably just pick up on things," remarked Candice.
"The benefactor showed you the handbook?" asked Ashley.
"Yes."
"And the rules?"
Candice nodded.
Meg chimed in and asked, "Were you paying attention?"
Candice's expression turned to one of what looked like guilt, ". . . not for all of it."
"Don't worry," assured Jessica. "The experts are here to help."
"Speak for yourself," muttered Emilia.
Ashley took a peek at one of the character sheets before handing them out. She gave the whole stack to the woman sitting to her immediate left (Candice), who took one and handed the rest to the woman on her immediate left and so on. Then they went around the circle introducing their characters. Emilia went first. Ashley could see from where she was sitting that Emilia had Jessica's character sheet, as she recognized Jessica's handwriting. Jessica probably gave it to her by mistake, but Ashley opted to say nothing and roll with it.
Emilia cleared her throat and began, "My character is named . . ."
It took her a moment to try pronouncing it as it was probably intended before she could continue reading the character description.
" . . . Meyga Mampygos. She is a half-elf bard. She likes to follow people across the mountains, sometimes even joining them for the sake of having company on which to practice her craft as a singer and a storyteller. She is also a . . ."
Ashley realized from Meg and Jessica's expressions that this was no accident. Meg had Emilia's sheet while Jessica had Meg's sheet. They managed to keep their poker faces on despite the amusement they got out of seeing Emilia's baffled reaction to what she read next.
" . . . naturist?"
Meg snickered, "I like her already."
"Hey," Jessica addressed Emilia, "do you need a moment to get into character?"
The two women had a good-natured laugh about that. When they composed themselves, Emilia gave her response.
"You really want me to get naked for this?"
She was met with a collective "Do what you want." Emilia said that if she had to do it for her D&D character from then on, all of the other players had to sing for her on her birthday. They agreed. She then turned to Candice and said "You're gonna hold them to that, right?" Upon getting an affirmative nod from Candice, Emilia completely disrobed herself before starting the game.
